Hey folks, I just wanted to shed some light on our L & F policy . It seems some people are getting the wrong information. So please feel free to check here:http://chainbangerz.com/news/chainbangerz-lost-found-policy
and please give feedback.
Thank you,
keep the chains ringing

I think it's a great policy. I would gladly pay $2 to get any of my discs back. I shudder to think about how much money I've lost over the years from losing plastic. Let's face it, the vast majority of disc golfers are not honest people when it comes to found plastic. Out of all the discs I've lost, I've been called back five times that I can remember. Of those five, two of them weren't even disc golfers. Maybe, with the incentive of getting $2 off their next purchase, people might be more willing to do the right thing. It gives me a little glimmer of hope at least.

This sounds like an excellent policy. I give kudos to Chainbangerz for taking on a large administrative task.

However, I challenge the notion that "we are NOT making money off of this".

I'll start with the premise that Chainbangerz is a for profit entity. It is reasonable to assume they buy product at a wholesale price and sell it at retail. For demonstration purposes, let's assume there is a 50% markup on product sold in their store. That means $2 of store credit actually cost the store $1.00. The store will return the disc to its rightful owner if a $2.00 fee is paid, meaning that they bring in an extra dollar for each disc. I understand that not all discs will be picked up, but as long as at least 50% are the store will make a profit.

Are they getting rich by providing this service? Almost certainly not. Are they making some sort of a profit? Probably.

Was that bin your L&F? Geezo, you have a bigger L&F than I do (by a little). One of these days I will have to post them all again. Do you ever post yours here? I'm terrible at organizing things, so I forget which ones are called on and when they were found. I post the ones I can't call when they turn up over in the Flightless In Skamokawa thread. I've had some of them for years because I didn't write any info on them. I hope I do better with that in the future. I'm going to assume that the ones I called on years ago are owned by people with as bad a memory as mine. Do I seem like someone with poor organizational skills?

Horning's Hideout puts a piece of tape with the date called on the disc.

What Keith meant was our lost and found policy isn't there just to charge $2 with intention of making money off of people. It's a place to make things easier for getting your disc back and we get lost discs that come in from as far North as Lake Stevens and as far south as Olympia and maybe farther.

Chainbangerz puts so much money (profit from sales) back into the disc golf community so when you buy from us essentially you are getting some of that money back towards the course(s) you play on a regular basis and involvement on opening and designing new courses as well as maintaining existing courses as well. Heck, in Chainbangerz events, the store even gives away a gift certificate to the person who finishes in last place! Not only that but Discovering Open Spaces (501c3) and the Chainbangers Disc Golf Club generate MORE funds that go directly towards surrounding area courses. So are we "making profit" from the $2 lost and found bin? No, not really and even if we did the money goes back to you, the disc golfers.

Would be a nice service for the golfers. I would come to the shop if I knew my lost disc was there because I saw it posted. I wouldn't go to the shop just because I lost a disc and wanted to search the lost and found bin. Additionally, I would tell a person if I saw that their name/unique marking was listed on the website.

Thanks for reading.

Every single disc that is in the bin I have called myself and either talked to and or left messages for with the address and phone number of the shop. If the discs in there aren't being picked up it's because they haven't came in to claim them yet.

Question: If a Person brings in a found disc and has a lost disc in the bin would that cancel out the $2 credit and fee?

I got back a couple I thought were lost to the white river!! Thanks Chainbangerz.. I actualy get alot of my plastic back due in part that I try to make friends with ALL of the players I meet. Just so they might remember me and feel more prompted to call me on a lost disc.. I got 1 disc back 6 times in 4 days, damn river hole!!

Horning's Hideout puts a piece of tape with the date called on the disc.

That's a good way. I hope I can remember to do that.

Assuming that said lost disc has contact information marked on the plastic, then you are able to contact.

How will you communicate that a disc that is identified as lost/found by using the unique identifier or marking? In other words, how can you contact someone about their lost disc if the disc is marked with something other than phone number, email address, or other contact information? Like if I lost my Valkyrie that had nothing other than "ACED HOLE 1 @ SeaTac on October 1, 2010" written on it?

Thanks for the responses.

I started a list with all the current and past found discs, but did not finish. Looks like you just help to create another task for Thomas, during down time. Once we are current we will post it on our site.
Thank you.

This is an impossible scenario.
You're stating that before the disc was thrown for an ace it had no marking on it.
It's not legal to throw an unmarked disc, the disc in the basket, after your throw, could have been anybodies, who knows. Someone could have walked up and just placed it in there when you werent looking.
So the ace wouldnt count, so there would be no need to write anything about it on it.
Name and # work better. :D

It doesn't have to be inked, just "uniquely marked with ink OR pigment based marking" so it could have a custom dye, but no ink.

Not if he was playing in a non-sanctioned round. Disc marking is only required in PDGA sanctioned rounds. However, it’s always a good idea to mark your disc with some sort of contact info (phone, email, etc...)
