I had a hard time prying myself away from the computer today during the live coverage of the USDGC. One of the first things I saw was Big Mike Leslie, the WA state rep, throw a really nice forehand drive on #17 followed by a heartbreaker of a missed birdie putt. I saw Dion making some good shots as well. After the first round it looks like...
7th- Feldberg & Sexton
18th- Crabtree
20th- Dion
60th- Skelly
103rd- Big Mike
11th- Mittl and Munk
161st- Hagerty (not last place so far!) and Jordan Mardis from ID
164th- McAllister
Am I missing anyone? It's fun watching all these guys isn't it?
So with the stroke & distance rule this year how many players do you think are still in it to win it? I see a lot of names in the top thirty that look like they could really turn on the afterburners and make up some strokes in the next few rounds. How about Val and Nate Doss tied for 91st?

I love the stroke and distance rule. It makes it so that you dont have to decide where the lie is. Much more efficient rule in my opinion. It makes the numbers a lot higher. Josh Anthon's 53 or whatever it was will stand up as a course record I would think. It would be hard to shot that on this new layout.
Good work guys rep'ing the NW. Keep up the good work.

Personally I think the rule is dumb. While yes it is efficient in the fact you don't have to determine a lie. It takes the ability to run for a putt or push a drive to the limit away from the game. It feels like it takes the risk/reward away and FORCES you to play safe. From a spectator side it takes much of the appeal away, for me at least.

I like the rule. One of the first things we teach new players is control is more important than power. Kind of funny to watch so many big arms forget this. :)

Forgetting Mike Wills (Jon's older brother). He learned the game at White River and relocated to/representing the state of Utah. Looks like he had a rough round... hopefully he will be able to shake it off.

I also like the rule. i think it will make the players really think about the throw that they are going to committ to and hopefully make better decisions for their game.
It is so cool to see these NW guys out there and really doing very good overall! i also was excited when i saw Big Mike on hole 17 yesterday. cant wait for today!

I think it enhances risk/reward.
Without this rule, there's OB holes that a player can just rip one over the OB, if it lands OB, he's got a 3p putt. Not a big penalty.

I've heard about the stroke and distance rule a lot, but I still can't find what it means.
Is it a rule that states you must retrow from your previous lie (or re-tee for tee shots) when you go out of bounds?

yep. you are penalized one stroke plus the distance you just tossed.

That is exactly what it means. Instead of estimating where the disc was last in bounds you re-throw from the same lie, with a penalty stroke added for good luck.

BTW, it's actually "throw and distance" in disc golf but some of our sports leaders regularly miss that. The word "stroke" has never been in the DG rulebook.

That's why I prefer the generic terms "shots", which can be applied to either sport. They taste good, too!

I love the rule----- you may have a big arm but now you have to have control. Now the game is technical and I love to watch the true technicians:)

The rest of his card did pretty well, too. Dig Double G's tasty forehand deuce around the bamboo.
