There are 5 Deaf Discers registered for this event including myself and the 2008 Deaf National champ, oh man am i so pumped for this one. Am sure you know how hard it is to just get Robinhood and myself to go to a Oregon series event as compared to a NT event! whoo whoo...
Who from oregon is going? I remember that Dion was trying to go to this one as a Discraft player??

This is a very fun tournament and a great way to start the season. I wish I were going; unfortunately, I will be in the middle of a big project at work and can't make it this year. *cry*

curious, for those who have played both trojan tournament format and the two courses for the memorial, which course are you most likely to lose the most discs?

smobro

It is the bomb event! I played it last year and had a blast. My wife and I rented a house in Fountain Hills and we are both playing it this year.
I never lost a disc at Vista, but you can. I lost a couple at Fountain, by making throwing errors. You don't have to lose discs. It is totally risk reward and I would say that OB is really more the concern. They tighten the fairways and pins are often protected by OB and difficult come backers.
It is truly a great event. I recommend that you play both courses ahead of time. I have never played Trojan, so I can't be helpful there.

Go Oregon!

well, what if he decides to snorkel for lost discs, he might leave with more discs than he arrived with.... by the way my gator on tournament 2 and viking on tournament 15 are still less than 5 feet from shore, look for me? :biggrin2:

Sean,

You registered as an Amateur, and I think you are the highest rated. I think with your game you would have much rather liked playing in Pro.

I would much rather take Vista twice instead of Fountains twice!!!

Good luck though and maybe you can do what Eric Wilson managed to do in 2004, and bring the trophy back to Oregon!

and what Jay almost did in 2005,

I have heard horror stories about Fountain hills... like don't get the spray from the fountain on you... oh yeah and avoid the LAKE... :(

Anyone else have any idea how the course plays?

Definitely Trojan. You might lose a disc or two at the fountain, but it's no where near as much of a disc eater as Trojan.

Oh, and sign a big "hello" to my buddy Tan Nguyen while you're down there, Nate. (I'm trying to convince him to come play the Beaver State, so push him about it a little for me :) )

February 5th, 2009, 12:02 PM
Yo you know Tan? that is so cool, yeah i talk with him often, I am defnitely trying to get them to come to both the Beaver State Fling and ODDGC. ODDGC happens the weekend after BSF. So its gonna be tough if they have to make a choice on one weekend only cuz ODDGC is gonna be hugee in terms of a regional Deaf tournament.
Anyways back on topic, so Trojan is tougher, I am gladdd to hear that. Latest I heard is that the Fountain is a par 54 and Vista a par 61 this year. I would rather lay up than risk losing a disc and get the penalty on top of it. We will see how it goes, am glad I'm going with 4 other Deaf guys who are more into the PDGA pro scene than I am.
See how we all do.

Yeah i did mention that about sean being the highest rated in ADV Ams somewhere on this website or on odsa... either way yeah, he looking to dominate the boys instead of playing with the men? Or he didnt have the extra cash to register for Open? Either way, just hopes he dominates anyways.

Wow I've never been this excited for anything! The weather is perfect here and it's great to neet all the pros I admire. I have an afternoon tee time at Fountain so I'll probably get up early and watch the pros start at Vista. I've spoken to many of the players I look up to and did some putting in the dark with Robbie Bratten. Keep an eye on the scores because there are some great cards out there in the pro field! They are both permanent courses. However, Shelly Sharpe is modified HEAVILY for the tournament. It's no where near as awesome in the normal config. The Fountain Hills tournament course is the normal course with a few longer tee pads mixed in, and some added artificial O.B..

The "Fountain", which the Ams play Today & Saturday, is being played in it's permanant 18 configuration WITH a "Few" minor tweeks (Tees) & OB Ropes throw in. ( http://2009memorial.com/images/fh-layout.jpg )

Vista Del Camino is normally a permanent 18 that gets "stretched" into a much LONGER course ( http://2009memorial.com/images/vdc-layout.jpg )

the permanent doesnt go into the area shown as "South".

Just heard from Tyler, he shot a 54, which is pretty darn good. Should be a 1010-1020 rated round or so I'm guessing.

Looks like Feldberg and Jenkins are going to be very near the top after the first round as well.

The memorial has the best starting holes on both courses of any tournament I have played at. The gut check potential is high and many many golfers start their rounds with a water hazard OB. I know, I know sick and twisted but the funny thing is you have safe areas to throw to, but everybody wants to be a hero!!!!

What is it 420' to the basket and 400' to the edge of land?

Thanks! I missed a ton of putts but I still played ok. I've never played advanced, or fountain hills, or a big tournament for that matter so I'm very excited to be in 13th of 116 people!

I saw a ton of Oregonians and it was great to see the top pros in the world. I've had good conversations with nearly everyone like Feldberg, Climo, Ellis, and others. I honestly feel like I'm in heaven. This has been the best experience ever and it's still day 1!

Ryan, I am not sure the AM's play from the 400 foot shot at fountains, but the distance for the AM's is still intimidating and last time we were both there, we saw at least one person from each group go splash!!!!

They shortened that hole down to 320' for us but half the people still threw one in the drink. I threw a huge hyzer and drilled the pole for a drop in 2. I then got a 6 on the next hole though.

I lost my first run star destroyer on hole two at fountain during wednesday practice and that totally threw me off my game. But found other discs to pick it up. Hole 2 seems to be worst of the bunch. 718 foot giant with OB left and right. The grass was super fast at Fountain, less fast at VDC. Lost 4 discs total in 4 days.... Brody certainly looked like he was having a ball with his video camera. The wind was a factor on the 3rd day for sure, lifting discs and carrying them off course big time. Made my teerex fly like a sidewinder, and my crystal buzz like a beat to death stingray. Westmoreland had this crazy drive on hole 14 3rd round...

I think the key was to play smart and not with your balls on some of the holes. SEANNNN??? :) Funny thing, was takling with Scott Mcmullen and sean before our first tee off. Scott and I were in the group in front of sean. We saw some guys throwing two or three times in the drink on their first hole. The fairway to the right is massive and only like 200-250 feet away, I told scott, anyone who throws ob first time, should just adjust, throw safe to the right, get a 5 and walk away, he agreed. We are on the 2nd hole, watching sean throw behind us. He throws one in the drink, 2nd throw, exactly the same into the drink, only this time, the stoned volunteer judge says his disc miracously crosses inbounds before going out *it was about 5-10 feet out of bounds*. I dont care about the thrower cuz he didnt mark it but i was shocked to see the judge mark it inbounds like 15 feet from the basket. Lucky sean walked away with a 5 which could easily have been a 7. It was super fun and tough, but i hope to get one or two of my discs back...

Wow those last 2 rounds were brutal. The wind picked up and I lost 8 discs in those 2 days and had about 15 OBs. It was rough. It was my first big tournament and my first time stepping up to advanced and I still finished 25th out of 116 even though I felt I could have played much better. I had the best experience ever though. It was like 10x the amount of fun that I expected. I'm still extremely tired. I definitely plan to return next year.
