View Full Version : STUMPTOWN SPONSORED WORK PARTY at Stub Stewart State Park - 10/17/2010 at 9am

October 1st, 2010, 09:35 AM
Come on out everyone! Our plan is to be working from 9:00am SHARP to 1:00pm at which point we will break for a BBQ lunch provided by Stumptown Disc Golf and grilled up by Master Chef Jordan Lewis... Ok, maybe he's not a "master" chef, but he is willing and that has to count for something.
This work party will be tackling the back nine holes. While they are pretty rough right now, we're confident we can whip these holes into playable shape. We will be prepping the greens for chips, clearing paths and fairways of debris and trimming branches to open up the fairways .
So if you can make it, please gather at Hill Top Day Use Area promptly at 9:00am on 10/17/10.

You guys and gals are awesome. Ever since I had to step away from leading this course install and hand it over to Coury Coates & Jeff Hagerty I knew it was going to be in good hands. With the help and support of Stumptown Disc Golf and its members this course will finally be installed. Now I only hope we can get a disc golf club installed at Vernonia High School and have this be their home course.
Now when you get to see the back 9 don't hate just enjoy the experience of playing in the forest. The back 9 is designed to provide more challenge for all skill levels. I did the rough layout of the back 9 but through the insightful experience of Coury Coates, Jeff Hagerty and John Ollis, the overall design has come together to provide a very challenging and rewarding disc golf experience. This is not designed to be a par 54 course!
I also want to let you know that Steve Kruger has put a lot of work into this course and has had many crews out there helping that are not even disc golf related. When you see him thank him and have a conversation with him. Steve is a cool guy and probably the most supportive of Disc Golf of all State Park employees that I have personally met.

That was an amazing work party. We had over 40 people show up to help clear the fairways and off fairway areas on the back 9. We managed to clear 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14 and drop in the baskets for those holes. The collars were already in the ground waiting for the fairways to be cleaned up. We still need to get another work party out there in early November to work on 15, 16, 17 and 18. But huge progress today and the best bunch of workers. People picked tasks that suited their strength and work level and we made massive strides on those first 5 holes in the back nine. Now you can play 1-9 hop across the road and play 10-14 and then walk left back out to the road by 9's basket area and 10's tee pad.
Special Thanks goes out to Stumptown Disc Golf for sponsoring the lunch and for Jordan Lewis, Chris Graham and Bob Cabal for cooking up the lunch for the masses. You guys rock and refueled the work crew to then go out and play the holes after they had lunch. Without your guys support clearly we would have a smaller turnout.
Special Thanks also to Disc Van Go for sponsoring the event by bringing people out from various areas of Portland to work at the work party. This definitely strengthened our number and gave people a chance to contribute that may have not had the opportunity, due to transportation.
Thanks to everyone that came out and donated your time and efforts. You all can consider this course one of your own and with out your sweat and effort it would not be what it is today. I hope you have been inspired to venture out again to another work party coming up real soon. We will also ask Stumptown to sponsor your efforts again with free lunch!

What Mike said........+ how about the State Parks people? I had no idea until today that ALL of the Tee Pads were already in, signage in, anchors in, benches in, stairs where needed in. Without the help and cooperation of the fine folks at Stubb we wouldn't be near this close to having a fantastic new 18 hole course in the area.
Now, the guy that designed hole 14 (Mike), should be kicked in the butt. :shooting:

... lunch was great! hats off to the cooks, and thanks to cindy and steve for the donuts in the morning... next time i'm going to see if i can borrow a party perc. from a friend so's we can have some fresh, hot coffee...
... the course is tricky, but reasonable (reasonable if you rock an eclipse, anyway ;) ) and so beautiful...

Thanks to Stumptown, The Jordan Lewis and associate Chefs, all the Ladies, Steve Kruger (the best State Park Ranger ever), Disc VanGo, Flash and all of the rest of you who made it happen! It was a great morning where all truly pitched in and flexed their muscles, picked up sticks, dragged piles, cut branches and basically hammered out a big part of what was a rough back 9. We got some major work done on holes 10-14 and those are now basically playable, and will be more playable as soon as some of the large piles get chipped up.
We plan on scheduling another big work party for early November in an attempt to get the remaining holes picked up and on our way to another great 18 hole course! Stay tuned....

Steve and I had a great time Sunday at the work party it was very rewarding to work our asses off all morning, and then get to play on the fairways we had worked so hard on that morning. A very nice reward for working so hard indeed. It was so awesome to have lunch ready for us after our hard work thanks to Sumptown, Jordan, and his crew. :yay: The course was awesome I loved it, and can't wait to go back to play it again. You can count on Steve and I for the next one for sure. Also thanks to all the Chick Flick ladies & thier men who came out we had a total of about 17 there from our gourp. :yay:
One thing did kinda bug me though there were a few people who showed up after the work part was done, and then proceeded to play the course we had all worked so hard on that morning. There were so many of us there that there were some long waits on tee pads, so at the very least they should have waited until all the people who participated in the work party had gone before their group, or maybe set off while we were eating lunch.

Eric and I had a great time at the work party (he had such a good time that he got carried away and aced hole 6 haha). Stub Stewart is gorgeous, and I look forward to seeing it fully develop. Thanks to everyone for the fun time, and the delicious food. :)
We had one minor issue, though, and it caused us to be almost 45 minutes late... Eric printed up directions from the wonderful Oregon Disc Golf Map (http://www.oregondiscgolf.com/), since we had never been there and are totally unfamiliar with the area. We followed the directions and they put us on some freaky logging road (we're guessing it was the far edge of the park's acreage). We were lost out there and very grateful for a 4 wheel drive truck, as the road was incredibly rocky and tight. We managed to find a house and ask someone out working in the yard how to get to the park entrance. He seemed amused and he was very helpful. A few more miles of freaky logging road, and we made it to our destination. Long story short, don't use the map for directions to that particular park. Goggle maps jacked us up on that one.

of course not everyone is there to participate in the work party. people hear of a course that is playable, or at least part way playable, they will come. Personally I think the best thing to do in that situation is talk to these folks, tell them that it is a course in work, and recommend them to come to the next work party. maybe they will come to help out, and maybe they wont, but if they know there is a group of people working their asses off to make this course possible will change their mindset? who knows?

While that's obviously Google's fault for not having all of the park roads in their system yet, I do have a place in my spreadsheet to put in alternate coordinates for driving directions on the map, so I've done that for Stub Stewart now.

When the course is ready and completely installed it will be up on DGCR and it will be either Jeff Hagerty, John Ollis, Coury Coates or Mike Phillips.
That is unless someone else wants to take the reigns on this and leave the course work and prep to us. At the next work party which is tentative for early November someone could come out and make a video or take pictures for such a review. We plan to install all remaining baskets at that work party with the possible exception of hole 17, which depends on John Ollis!

Hmmm...what could Ollis have up his sleeve? The construction of a big backhand hyzer hole, a super straight roc hole, a left to right hole that looks like a forehand?? This next work party is going to be sweet and may unlock the mystery of hole 17.

I called in sick Monday and had to head up and see the place. WOW, I felt guilty for being up there, that looks like a hell of alot of great work. I only walked the first nine, took it easy due to not having anyone else to spot me. Great benches, course looks great, very nice! Seems like it will be a nice course to hit when the rainy weather is here, not soggy and swampy like Trojan and the forest protected me well. I gotta make it to the next work party, I owe it!
I posted a few pics on DGCR
