Is there any better day than New Disc Day?
My birthday is tomorrow, but I have already received some cash money for the event and headed down to NA to blow it. I picked up a Champion Beast and Roadrunner and a DX Stingray. The Roadrunner and Stingray are new molds to my bag and I am excited to try them out. The Beast is my workhorse for Pier Park considering the DX one I have is getting pretty chewed up.
Anyway, what do you guys think is we make this thread the New Disc Day thread and we all post here our new purchases and how they turn out?

On Saturday I purchased a Halo by latitude 64 and it seems to throw just like my champion boss. The colors are unique but I'm a bit concerned about them hiding.

I took my new bag and discs out yesterday to hit Pier and Greenway and found the Champ Beast and Roadrunner weird out of the box. It is normal for Champion plastic to be a little overstable when it is brand new? I heard something like that before.

September 11th, 2010, 05:32 PM
I find Champion discs to feel the most overstable off the shelf.
Star isn't quite as bad... but still needs some love.
If you liked your DX Beast off the shelf, just break in the new one and enjoy.
Pier park should be a good place for that, decent number of trees. :biggrin2:
I find Roadrunners to be an awkwardly fast and understable disc to throw with consisitency... maybe just me though. Don't know the rays...

That is what I am hoping. I got the Champ plastic to take on the trees since they have been eating my DX discs.

Bought a Star Katana from Bob at a park in Orlando, Florida. Holy crap, that disc is stable compared to my champ Katanas. But since star breaks in pretty quickly, I hope it will be more katana-like after some North Park Time.

Brand new, 11X K.C. Pro Gazelle, solid black.
I have never seen any disc before in solid black Champion/C.E. plastic.
I have seen black Champion discs like the ones Mark has on DGV, but those are all kinda smokey.
This Gazelle is more like black Star plastic, completely opaque, no light goes through it. I tried a flashlight, but not even a glow comes through.
I know its Champ/C.E. because thats the only plastic that 11X's were made in.
Thing bombs really straight, just like the old one. Has white writing on it, so its pretty easy to spot, but I aint playin' any night golf with it any time soon. :whistler:

New 155 gram gummy CE/CFR Gazelle from 2002, domey with tremendous glide, its taking over the spot that the black 149 gram 2004 KC Pro Gazelle had.
The KC Pro has a flatter top and not as good glide, the new gummy CE flies a better thumber line for me, plus its easy to put on various backhand lines.

Shelled out for some new plastic...
...and it finally showed up.
163 Opto Halo
170 Star Warith (replaces a lost one)
178 FLX Buzzz (also replaces a lost one)
Already took 'em down to the park and chucked around a little.
The Wraith is going to be a welcome return to the bag. I hadn't replaced the last one, since my beat up DX Destroyer flies pretty much like a new Wraith, but that DX is seeing too much time off the bench and it's starting to get a little flippant.
I'm really liking the Halo, kind of reminds me of a Venom, but with a lot more glide. Nice disc that likes to GO:shocked:!
The Buzzz has definitely been missed the most. Even though I've got a Z Buzzz in the bag, the FLX always seemed the most trustworthy;).

I recently picked up a new Sidewinder and Valkyrie, both champion and 175g. I have thrown and loved both before.
The Valk had been my driver of choice for most of my career until about a year ago when I lost it and didn't replace it. I threw it out Vance this past weekend and instantly remembered why I loved it: the glide. It always seems to have just a little extra kick before it fades. I'm stoked to have this back in the bag, not to mention the awesome HUB stamp!
I have really come to depend on the Sidewinder. It was my ace run disc on #11 and 16 at Pier. I lost it about a month ago at HH. It needs some breaking in to do what I want it to, but it is a straight shooter out of the box.

I gotta new Z Nuke. Never had one before.
Best outta the box forehand driver I have thrown so far.
Lurvs it, made a spot in the bag for it.
Also a 159 gram X out R-Pro Boss that was calling my name at PIAS, only becuase it was cheap and new.
It's not like any of my other R-Pro Boss's, it has no dome, like a Star Boss, and its very stable, not at all flippy like the others.
This is the only R-Pro Boss I have been able to throw FH without the instyflip.
I hope it breaks in though, I bought it for BH hyzerflip duty, and it aint doin that now.

I recently bought a 168g Champion Rhyno in a wonderful day-glo green color. I picked it up in the store and thought to myself... I have to have this disc now, I was also supprised by how gummy it was for champ plastic. Well after playing a few rounds and having a couple of practice sessions, I am not disappointed with the purchase. I use it as a risky approach disc as it is very slow and sticks when it lands, which is great for those times where you don’t want to go past a basket and (for me anyway) is most always finishes left.

This is the first disc I have ordered on it's release date without thorough research. I am hoping its everything I want it to be. The only thing I am concerned about is the fact it’s r-pro and will not have the long-range durability to use it as my primary driver (if I like it). Hopefully they will make it in other more durable plastics down the road.
dcnewt2
December 7th, 2010, 11:22 AM
I think the choice of r-pro has more to do with making the disc a 169g floater than anything else. And yep, I hope it holds up well to, but for me it should be more of a specialty, keep my mind off the H2O disc. With those numbers though, It is right in the wheel house to be a primary driver for a lot of folks. And Actually, now that I think about it, maybe it is more of a cross between my beast, my wraith, and my rubber ducky! ;-)

December 10th, 2010, 10:52 PM
I'm pretty sure that the Hurricane was originally developed as a Force "SS." Whether or not that's accurate, it is a higher speed driver than the Rogue and will probably take a fair amount of power to throw properly.

How does the Hurricane compare to the DGA Rogue?
definitely more stable. Think a mix of destroyer and rogue... It does flip and turn on big arms. It flies real nice on a soft hyzer. Maybe kind of a longer teebird? The one that got me hooked is a 169 which was just dyed and is on the way back to me. Picked up a 172 and 173 and will compare the 3. I don't like the SP rogues but the first flight rogues fly more consistent for me.

I know the Flick is 2.5 and the Force is 2.0, but it seems to me that I could put a little more hyzer on the Force than the Flick and it would level out. Maybe it's because the Force is a faster disc, or maybe it's the way I throw... Either way, the Force ended up being a better driver for me.

The R-Pro Wahoos (i received) are very sticky and are a firm r-pro blend but still feel very soft. The rim size and overall weight of the disc feel good in the hand, but I am not sure about the stickiness of the disc. I am hoping that some of the stickiness of this disc will go away once it’s been thrown a couple of times.

Conditions:
48 degrees
Mostly sunny
No precipitation
Wind: West at 21mph with Gusts 30mph
Humidity: 47%
Observations:
Throw 1: Downwind RHBH
Distance: 25’
I underestimated the stickiness of this disc the throw went straight into a cement curb bounced and skidded on asphalt for about 5 feet. Disc now has dings in flight plate and on edge where it hit the curb.
Throw 2: Upwind RHBH
Distance: 150’
Better but Once again the stickiness of this disc caused unwanted griplock which resulted in a less then favorable result.
Throw 3: Crosswind from right RHBH
Distance: 200’
Better distance by this time probably because by this time the disc had a light coat of dust. :)
Throw 4: Crosswind from right RHBH
Distance: 275’ with a 25' roll for 300'
Once I solved the sticky disc issue, this disc really flew.
Other observations:
The disc plastic is very soft be careful around trees and other hard surfaces (it’s R-Pro so chance are you already knew that).
You can tame the stickiness of this disc with a liberal coat of dust or chalk on either your hand or the disc.
I don’t know whether it was the weather conditions, the disc, the way I threw it, or a combination of those factors but this disc like to roll.
I can’t wait for this disc to come out in more durable plastic.

Don't count on it. The whole point is for it to be a floater, and I think they used R-Pro because it's the only plastic they have that would float with this mold.

I've been playing with a few new discs lately
The River - A latitude disc in their version of champ plastic... really straight out of the box... think Tee-bird... the disc is a wide mold (the same diameter as a roc) this gives it the feel of a sharp edge roc (it's a little doomy). I imagine this disc could really get a lot of work as a hyzer to straight woods disc. I would be curious to hear what a great roc thrower (Tim comes to mind) thinks of it.

I bought a New Innova Star 1st run Vulcan 171g from DG Depot. Holy Cow! This is the 1st time I have thrown 400' before. (Maybe I had an accidental roller, or tossed into the river and it floated 400' once). But I threw this thing twice at that distance. Released on slight hyzer, turns over slightly, then hyzer back. Prettiest S curve I have ever been able to achieve. I'm not a great arm by any stretch, so I am tickled how this thing flies. Thrown flat on release it has a great turnover for me. Nice big anhyzer shot, Like hole 3 at Lunchtime. Total game changer for my clear distance shots off the tee.

A recently traded a Roc for a viper (why would i trade a roc... well i wasn’t using it and i wanted to try the viper without investing in one). I am thinking that the viper may have a place in bag after a tragic loss of my panther. Granted it is on the opposite side of the panther as far as stability but I think it will be great for the same shots (distance wise) as the panther as it seems to be fairly controllable.

Two Discmania P Line DD2 Frenzy's 174 grams each. Both are to experiment with.
What was taken out since the last time I got new discs.
The Latitude 64 Halo's. I can't throw them worth a damn. I got a friend who can and who was glad to take both of them for trades to be named later (probably his 162 ESP Nuke...)

Picked up some new stuff.
Echo Katana- the Katana I've always wanted. Alot like a broke in echo Wraith right out of the box. Way more stable than any of the other 3 regular plastic katanas I've tried.
Pd2 chaos- p plastic, nice power driver. Even in pro. In fact it's the nicest pro plastic I've ever thrown. Grippy and the extream dome seems to feel good in my hand. Good for forearm drives too. Excited for this disc to break in a bit. Gonna give any destroyers and bosses a break for a bit and use this thing in.
Echo Valk- way stable for a Valk. Really don't wanna flip at all new. Great for forehands.

Just traded a DX Roc for a Z Breeze. I've never thrown a Breeze, but from all I've heard, it should be great!

That's a really good trade considering the Breeze is OOP and worth a little bit of money to some people. It's also a good disc. Let me know if you get tired of it. ;)
