Hello Fellow Disc Golf Enthusiasts!
Operation "Make Willamette Open the Sickest Tournament of the Season" is officially up and running! As many of you know, the pro side of this year's WO is an A tier, making it the first pro A tier in Oregon not to be named the Beaver State Fling. The Am side of this event will remain a B tier, so that as many ams as possible (even those not signed up with the PDGA) can attend without having to be current members.
We will be using three of the finest courses in the Willamette Valley this year, with all divisions getting to play each course at least once! Those three courses are: Willamette Park in its standard layout, Bryant Park in its standard layout, and Adair Park in its PAR 60 layout (similar to that used at the Oregon Warm Up). Since we are using three courses, we will be able to accommodate a total of 216 players! Each player will get to play four rounds total, with travel between courses happening on Saturday, and sticking with the same course twice on Sunday.

Registration will be handled through NW Sign Up (http://store.northwestsignup.com/) this year, which will go live this Friday, on August 6th!
All Professional divisions: $100.00
All Advanced divisions: $50.00
All Intermediate divisions: $40.00
As apart of all amateur players packs, you will be receiving one custom stamped disc provided by Discraft (http://www.discraft.com/discgolf.html), and one custom dry fit tee, provided by Paragon Disc Golf Apparel (http://paragondiscgolf.com/). We are also working out a meal deal for Sunday's nights award ceremony, don't worry - we'll keep ya posted. Pro players packs will be the same, except with no disc, just a shirt and meal ticket.
Some exciting news for both players and citizens living in Corvallis! Fireworks Restaurant and Bar (http://www.fireworksvenue.com/index1.html) is throwing the Willamette Open players a PARTY! There will be live reggae bands and disc golf games for everyone, and a percentage of the proceeds from the night go directly to the tournament! No doubt to be an extraordinary time for all! This will be happening Saturday night after everyone's rounds. Fireworks offers delicious food and drink options that is well worth everyone's attention.

As usual, the award ceremony for this event is going to be held at Calapooia Brewing Co. (http://www.calapooiabrewing.com/) in Albany. We will also be handing out the prizes for the Oregon Tour at this time.
I am currently working on Camping options for those who need to camp. If things go according to plan, camping will be at Bryant Park and could potentially be free, we have our fingers crossed on that one.
This year's event promises to be one of the best Willamette Opens yet, and I can't wait to enjoy it with all of the best golfers in Oregon! Keep an eye on your email accounts, as I will be sending out a general letter soon, and continuous updates in the coming weeks.
Official flyer is on the way...

Awesome! Will there be any more fundraisers this year?
Its possible that I might throw something together on Sunday September 5th, there are a few other small C tiers that weekend, so impact would be minimal. It would really just be a chance for people to come play Adair and register with me in person.
Camping!
Camping will be held at Bryant Park this year. The park will be reserved for camping Friday night, Saturday night and Sunday night for those who want to stay an extra evening. The cost of camping will be $5.00 per person for the weekend. There will be a spot on the online registration to pay for this. Remember that Bryant Park is an Alcohol Free park.
Food options for both Saturday night and Sunday night are coming along, I will be posting after this weekend with all sorts of good news for everyone!
For all you facebookers out there, don't forget I am operating a Willamette Open A Tier page on facebook, with updates and photos being posted there intermittently. Found here FACEBOOK (http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000507960765&ref=ts)

Server seems plenty slammed to me, have tried all afternoon, still cannot get in and register.....
What's up with opening it earlier than announced? What if it filled before the announced open time? Wouldn't players who waited until the announced open time, only to find the event full, be bummed?
UPDATE: I got in! I'm registered!

There will not be any more fundraisers this year. On September 5th at Wortman in McMinville, I plan on supporting Terry's event and help raise money for the special olympics. I will have my WO Fundraisers available to anyone who wants them for purchase or scrip redemption. Hopefully we get a great turnout!

A: 21/72 (29.2%)
B: 21/72 (29.2%)
63/216 (29.2%)
All three pools are currently tied in the race to fill. Exciting stuff! Tournament is almost at 1/3 capacity. Players packs discs are to be handled by first come first serve basis, the sooner you arrive to check in, the sooner you can pick your disc!

A: 25/72 (34.7%)
B: 25/72 (34.7%)
72/216 (33.3%)
Wow! We are officially a third of the way full! While I expect the Am side to fill completely, I expect we'll only get about 50 Pro players, so the fact that we have 22 already (with no women signed up), means we're almost halfway there on the pro side! Pools A and B are neck and neck on the race to fill. I'll make things interesting: The first side to fill gets first dibs at the payout line at the awards, bwahahaha! Better head to Northwestsignup.com asap Ams!!!
As far as the pro side is concerned, we are looking at a gaurenteed $1,000.00 for first place this year. In fact, this is my goal for top three on the pro side:
$1,000
$700
$500
Not too bad!

Really? Hole 2 to hole 5 basket? That makes me want to cry just thinking about it....
2 to 5 is one of the best shots on the course! Soo much fun to throw, very exciting Par 4. The trick it to keep it in the fairway of five, there is great risk/reward on this shot. I've blasted full boar and made it to the curve in the road on fives fairway, but its very easy to go OB left, or into the rough on the right.
The Par 60 layout at Adair is really one of my favorite layouts to play of any course in the valley. Hopefully we get lots of sun and good conditions to play it in, otherwise its super challenging (mostly due to some temp teepads).
Look for the dreaded island hole to be situated differently this year!

I just started playing disc golf last October, so I don't know what the Willamette Open is like. In watching videos on the web, lots of tournaments allow spectators. Is it normal to have spectators at the Willamette Open? I would really like to watch at Adair on Sunday. My wife and I wandered around the road at a Adair during Festivus 2010 for about 15 minutes, but felt out of place and worried we were in the way.

Spectators are more than welcome! We aren't use to having very many in our sport, but it sure would be great to get some :)
It is also a good time to remind all the players to be courteous, as well as display the proper attitude on the course. Everyone has their bad moments, but if we could all be a bit more aware of our actions and "reactions" to unfortunate shots, then we would all be better off.
If you feel in the way of a player, they will kindly ask you to move, but more than likely you'll be fine!

Player's Pack Discs arrived yesterday! Holy Cow do these discs look and feel nice! I personally held each disc and said a short prayer of thanks to the gods at the Discraft factory for creating such beautiful plastic.
There will be a mix of each mold to choose from come Saturday morning, however, the ladies will find much more value out of a Challenger and an Avenger SS, so if the gentleman could stick to the Nukes, I think everyone would be happy.

Wow.. those are indeed beautiful! :whistler: I'd dearly love to get my hands on a 170-172g Nuke.. *drool* Out of curiosity, where will the players' packs be available (i.e. which course)? At the Eugene Celebration, it was a bit of a drag not being able to get a players' pack until pretty late into the tourney (I'm an Am.), and was hoping each pool would have equal access to players' packs somehow :P

Players Packs will be available at the first course you play for the event. The Pools assigments are each headed by a TD (C Pool, me - A pool, Mike Storrs - B Pool, Greg Johnson). The night before the event we will divide all the shirts, discs, wristbands and other items into each pool - those items then will be available at check in on the first morning.

Reply by noon this Saturday if interested.
Thanks

I printed out the flyer and looked at it. It was nicely organized in table format, color-coded, and EASY to understand. I think all schedules should use this type of template!
:chug::chug::chug:
Where did you find that color flyer? I can't seem to locate it... Please don't tell me it's on Facebook; if so, can someone please post it here for the rest of us?

Adair will be set up Friday for the doubles round.
The other two courses are in their configuration I belive.
Doubles start at 5 PM at Adair - myself or someone else should be ready to sign in and collect money at 4:30, with a shotgun start happening at or a bit after 5. Can't start too much later than that, since the course is long...and we have other things to do...

Aren't A tiers and above supposed to have courses set up one week prior to the event or am I mistaken? I know you've been busy, Dion, but a trip to Adair tomorrow to practice holes I have never played now seems kind of pointless...

Sorry Sam: This is from the Tour Standards pdf:
Courses are required to be set up for the first round configuration a minimum of 48 hours prior to
the start of the event for National Tours and 24 hours prior to the start of the event for
SuperTours. In the case of temporary holes and/or courses where baskets are unavailable, the
temporary configuration must be clearly marked.

Dion, when you have a minute can you elaborate on the pin placement for tournament #'s 9,10, and the tee and pin on #11 in the par 60 Adair layout listed on the WO Master Layout document? I've played the Festivus and AFD layouts so you can use those to illustrate if appropriate.
Thanks! I don't think I'll have a chance to see Adair before Sunday morning.

Tournament 9 (Regular 10) is played towards the island next to the lower parking lot along the main entrance road. A good tee shot gets you to the gap or short pin of ten, and then an upshot onto the island gets you a look at birdie. Not long, but fairly technical
Tournament 10 (Regular 11) is played from 11's tee pad toward the basket at the end of the island which is often used in festivus (on the sewer grate, which will be blocked so we don't lose discs.)
Tournament 11 is a temporary hole that has been used before. It shoots from a corner of land behind the softball tee, over the parking lot and towards reguls 12's teepad. Pin will be on a slightly sloped green.

I appreciate all your extra effort, Dion. I have been reading the course layouts. Has anyone ever made a graphical map of the Adair Par 60 layout? There are some things I would probably understand better from a map view, likely due to my general lack of familiarity with the course. I am not asking you to create a map, in fact, I would be happy to make one if I understood the layout better. I am only asking if you know if one exists, and if so, if you could point me toward it. It's OK if your answer is "no, sorry, I know of no such graphical map." But I do hope one exists...

Just read over the master layout for Adair again and I could probably make a map if anyone needs one. The only hole I'm not 100% about is the island for hole 9 "Hole 10 to basket on island". I'm pretty sure it's just the island across the road, but I'm not sure.
So if anyone wants me to make a map, just let me know.

Hole #2 tee to #5 pin was the original hole #1 back in the late 90's when we first started planning the Adair Course. Pat Farrell first set that up with temp baskets. Only then the whole berm was covered in knarly blackberries!
Hole 9 (normal 10) coming out of the woods will play across the road to the Island. Not sure of the pin placement which should get marked with a flag before we get a temp basket on it Friday afternoon. In recent years Festivus has had a hole following 18 playing to that Island from the other direction.
The USDGC style "Island" hole will be played up hill from the #13 tee pad rather than the downhill Island we have used at Festivus, April Fools Doubles and the Warm up. I think that changes the hole the most for guys like me that throw a hyzer bomb.
Other differences from the map posted. Normal hole 8 is in play in the short position as hole #7. Normal hole 15 will be hole 16 but played to 16's short position. With OB line down the right side along the drainage trench.
Hole 1 will be played like this year's Festivus as a Par 4 without the short cut Ace basket in the normal position. The pin will be located on the West side of the entrance to the park. It will be harder as over the road will be OB and there will be a mando to prevent throwing over the tennis courts. The smart way to play this one is to throw to the normal deep position and give yourself a chance for an upshot to get the 3.
It would be nice if we could get more people registered to make it really worthwhile to have 3 flights. At least speed of play should be better than most tournaments with so many open holes.

Emails have been sent with the following information.
Final course information and driving directions will be tomorrows project.
Here is a copy of the email sent:
Hello All!
The Willamette Open 2010 is merely days away, and I hope everyone is as excited as I am! The WDGC members have been putting in a tremendous amount of effort to ensure the success of this event. Many thanks are due to these outstanding volunteers!
First let me catch anyone up to date who may have not been checking the forum.
- As of Monday the 20th, all entries received are going to be charged a $10 late fee.
- Friday night doubles check in begins at 4:30 PM with a shotgun start at 5 PM at Adair. We will be playing the Adair Par 60 Layout.
- There is still plenty of room in each pool, please if you are interested in this event, come join us!
Besides the four rounds of golf, there are plenty of other activities to keep one’s self entertained for the weekend.
Putting competition – Saturday night at Fireworks Restaurant and Bar. Running all night there will be a Discraft sponsored putting competition. Cost of the competition is $1 per try with unlimited tries. The rules are as follows: Three stations will be marked at varying distances, the first station being worth one point, the next being worth two points, and the last worth three points. Each competitor will get three attempts from each station, highest score wins. Perfect would be 18 points. Players may bring their own putters, although Discraft Pro D Challengers will be supplied to all who need. First place receives a Discraft deluxe bag! Second place receives a Discraft tee shirt, and Third place receives a Discraft mini and towel.
Raffle! There are some amazing prizes going to be on hand for this years raffle, including: Keen shoe voucher ($100 value), Discraft and Gorilla Boy Bags ($40-$60 value), 2010 Memorial and Masters Cup players pack schwag (stool, shirt, waist pack, silver DGA Squall)! My personal favorite – Custom Full Color Buzzz with Touring pro signatures and BSF Champion Christian Dietrich signature!
Basket Toss – No one has hit the DGA Portable Mach Lite all year, and now it is up for grabs at the Willamette Open! Come Sunday night outside of Calapooia Brewery we will be tossing at that dang thing until some one makes it! Tosses will be $1 per try.
At this time I’d like acknowledge and appreciate the sponsors for this event!
Calapooia Brewing Co. – The largest contributor to the Willamette Open, and the producer of fine beers available in the Willamette Valley. Calapooia has a long time standing support of disc golf in Oregon, and as they continue to support out efforts, it only be fair that we drink their delicious brews! Now how come that doesn’t sound like such a bad deal for us golfers, mmm…
Fireworks Restaurant and Bar – Fireworks has stepped up as a new sponsor for the Willamette Open this year and is hosting the players party on Saturday night! They are located just blocks away from Willamette Park in south Corvallis, and have hired two outstanding Reggae bands to play for the enjoyment of us golfers! We will also be holding the putting competition and selling raffle tickets that night.
Discraft and Innova – Thanks for supplying us with fundraiser discs and tournament goodies! The two largest manufacturers of golf discs are always coming up with ways to support tournaments!
Adair Handicap League (Mike Storrs) – Mike has been tirelessly running AHL all season long to benefit both the Festivus and WO this year. Raising several hundred dollars, the WO is grateful for both Mike’s efforts and the players who attend league on a weekly basis!
WDGC – From club President Jay Sexton all the way down the line to average club-paying members like…wait a second, none of us are average! We are all amazing hard working golfers contributing to golf in both the valley and beyond! Without the WDGC in place, the WO would not be enjoying its twelfth year as a successful event!
Northwest Sign Ups – for hosting registration for this event online, as well as donating funds to the event itself! An amazing registration website that has proven to be reliable, punctual and generous! Northwestsignup.com!
Paragon Disc Golf Apparel – Thanks for providing beautiful custom dry-fits for all players and volunteers for this year’s event. There will be plenty of extra shirts available for purchase and redeemable with scrip.
Odwalla – Free bars for everyone! Thanks Odwalla for your continued support of the disc golf mind and body!
Albany Parks and Recreation – Hooking us up with camping at Bryant Park this year.
Willamette Open Qualifiers – providing free entry for the following players:
- Dion Arlyn, Andy Hock, Jeff Elliott, Zaq Jones, Roy Albert, Shavonne Schumacher, Jeff Hagerty (1/2 entry) and Matt Benotsch (1/2 entry).
Thank you to all the individual sponsors for contributing $25 and purchasing three tee signs each! Three Hole Sponsors: John Ollis, Gawain Stern, Virgil Ackerman, Greg Johnson.
Course information will be sent soon, including a rough map of Adair, and driving directions between the three venues!
Can’t wait to see you all there!

There are going to be lots of shirts left over this year (when I placed the order I was still under the delusion that the event might fill). After everyone has had their pick, we'll take stock of what is left and sell them to any interested party. Setting a price is probably the only thing that is undecided at this point. Players in the tournament are only being charged wholesale value of the tee (what we paid for them ourselves). Outside of that, we'll need to figure out the right cost.

Each player will get to play four rounds total, with travel between courses happening on Saturday, and sticking with the same course twice on Sunday.
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs207.snc4/38679_145306588829606_100000507960765_384404_22997 40_n.jpg
Fireworks offers delicious food and drink options that is well worth everyone's attention.
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs225.snc4/38572_145307118829553_100000507960765_384405_50938 66_n.jpg

JJ,
I sure do want to.
I met Glen in 1989 at Aquatic Park, Berkeley, Ca.
He was one of few pros that came up to us, the only am team, and offered advice. He shared some tricks that I still use today.
I followed him for years in the old disc golf rags, and IMO felt he was one of the 1st true career pro disc golfers.
My question to you Jimmy is, are you guy's going to stay in the PGM's or switch to PM's and then back to PGM's. :whistler:

We'll probably get together and decide to do whatever is the most confusing for Dion and the tournament staff.
Other than that, with three signed up my inclination is to stay in PGM. Someone else may show up last minute (are you listening Misters Sexton and/or Sisson?). If Mike or Glenn drop then I'd play Master.
Now get off that damn fence.

Yeah I'm on the list. Thanks Dion for letting me cash up day of. Hope to get a round in with you Mr. Treelove. Looks like we got some work to do this weekend. Thank you wife. Sorry you had to cover a few shifts this weekend at work. Thanks for thinking of me and getting me signed up through Dion.

Int. Treelove. Hard to say if we will play together. I invisioned us charging through the higher ups to the leader card. I understand. I played Int. last year. Some day MM2. My score would have placed me better in MM1. Go figure.

So I'm looking at results so far and I guess I guy can't win a tourney in advanced any longer unless he's shooting a 1000 rated tourney or better?

The results are skewed currently. The courses don't have the correct par entered (Willamette = 54, Bryant = 59, Adair = 60), and the round ratings aren't lined up properly either. Each pool is playing different courses each round (with different par counts) and yet each round is being rated as if each played the same course. Hopefully that'll be fixed once the last rounds are uploaded tomorrow. The only thing that's correct right now is the total stroke count for each player.

If the advanced group played Adair and then Willamette then leader is at 11 down...rating for the Willamette round should be correct, based on last years ratings for that park and I'd imagine that a 58 on a par 60 layout would be close to 1000. Any way you slice it or dice it the top couple players are averaging at or over 1000 for the tourney. I'm just saying that winning in advanced is starting to become quite the feat!

Bush has been shooting consistently, he'll be moving up soon I hope... Adair is a mental test and those who were patient got the better scores. I look forward to Bryant tomorrow. Wilamette played a lot easier than I thought it would but nice to have a not so mentally challenging round between adair and bryant... See y'all out there earllllyyy tmw, teeing off 1 hour earlier whew, hope the fog is not as bad heh...

The ratings are a still a little messed up. There is no way an advanced round should be rated 20 points or so below a pro round. I'm sure Dion will get it figured out though. Nate won pro and another Nate won Advanced.

I just want to say thanks again to all the people that helped put this on.
I had a great weekend and got to play with a lot of really cool people (Zaq and McGrew, you guys are awesome and it was fun shooting two rounds with you guys).
This tournament was awesome and hopefully next year more people will come out.

And Nate should be eithere 24 or 25 under par. This according to what I was told what par was for the 3 courses.
Runnaman. I believe you are Chase. I enjoyed playing a round with you. Definitaly had some fun this weekend. Really enjoy playing when my groups are fun.

Took some short footage in the first round with the new phone. Was also able to use the phone to post the rounds of the pro flight as cards came in. Technology is cool...
Thank You Everyone who came out and played this weekend. This tournament was an amazing amount of work to put on, but was well worth it.
The folks who are in need of some top level appreciation are:
Mike Storrs, Greg Johnson, and Dave Pittman
Other thanks goes to volunteers and WDGC club members who contributed in many ways this weekend:
Billy Gaskill, Jay Sexton, Scott Duvall, Eric Smith, Kim Halsey, Nate Sexton, Colin Sexton, Shane Waters, Brianna Anderson-Gregg, kelly Christiansen, Ted Harbaugh, Brandon Hill, Shavonne Schumacher, Jeromie Fields and Rebecca Duffy and more that I know I am forgetting!
Results are up and current and everything is set as far as ratings go. RESULTS (http://www.pdga.com/tournament-results?TournID=10503&year=2010&include_ratings=1#Open)
Biggest dissapointment of the weekend: only having 131 players. Where'd you all go?
Greatest achievement of the weekend: taking second while also acting as lead TD. Best WO finish for me to date.
Thank You All,
Dion Arlyn

I just wanted to give a shout out to Dion for running a great tourney this weekend. You might think that because the event didn't fill to capacity that it was not a success, but as a player I know I enjoyed the quicker rounds and somewhat more relaxed feel to the event. I had a great time watching Whitlock and Cox play real golf :)
My only complaint is one that plagues almost all multi-course events; the complete lack of community atmosphere. It wasn't until Calapooia on Sunday night that I saw who actually played in those other divisions.
Anyway, great job Dion & crew. (I know there were a lot of people involved.)

Thanks to the Willamette Club for stepping up and running the first A-tier in Oregon that wasn't the BSF. More proof our sport is alive, well, and growing.
And light turnout does create stress for the TD, but results in a great playing experience for the rest of us. I got to play three great courses over two days and the only time I had to wait on the tee was for other park users. Talk about DG heaven.
And you have to love those Paragon shirts. Light and comfy.
Looking ahead to next year, I think the Eugene Club, the Oregon Championships, and WO (which comprise our end of summer series) can sort of start thinking of ways of spreading the events out a bit more. Maybe even push the EC or ODDC into August if the Calapooia keeps it's approximate date. I'm sure having these events run on sequential weekends hurt the WO pro turnout. But I also think it was smart, from a player's perspective, to move the WO up a few weeks, given the weather possibilities.
Something to consider.
Thanks again to everyone who gave of themselves to make this happen. I really appreciate it.

Out of curiosity...
Brice Lang shot a 48 at Willamette in sunny weather and it rated him a 1006 rated round. I shot the same score in overcast, drizzly & wet weather and it is only a 998. I love the ratings system but this type of crap chaps my hide.

Which basically means if you had been playing Pro Masters you too would have had a 1000 rated round. Yep, there's one more reason sandbaggin sucks. ;p

I understand why it happens, but a 49 when the pros played Willamette was rated a 995, when I shot a 49 it was a 979. And I know they're still unofficial so maybe they'll even out a little once the official ratings come out.

It has to do with the people who play the course at the same time you do... but the weather was such that I would have thought my round was rated higher not the other way around. I would have much rather had the dry tee pads that Brice got to shoot from.

Sorry to disappoint you, but the teepads were slippery and wet all morning at Willamette. Typical Willamette slip-n-slide.

I think Kirk is getting robbed on his course record -11 at Bryant as Byrant is way harder to score that well than at Adair given the birdie opportunites at both courses. Yes the Adair OB's create more scoring havoc but Bryant is harder flat out. Thought that round would be like 1070 or better... anyways, awesome tournament, smooth sailing, good lunch breaks, good people running the event, good players to play with as I witnessed some of the most insane putting I have ever seen in a round...
I believe having too many big tournaments, and little ones in the month of September might have impacted the number of players to some degree but 130+ players is awesome nevertheless...
And whoever stole my sausages while Dion and Mike were handing out awards... hope we get those back into the right hands...
My dad wore his new next adventure shirt to work today and Tracey is wearing the paragon tournament shirt as well...

I just want to say that I thought that the collection of courses that we played in the pro field was a terrific test of golf. I used almost every shot in my bag and boy was it an endurance test.
Thanks Dion and crew. Willamette Open the A tier is a keeper.
