As a few of you know I've been working some angles to get a 9-holer here in Carneypatch. I'm dealing with a municipallity that has no money but a couple of promising parks. Yesterday, I strolled both parks with one of the city councilmen and he's putting me up first on the agenda at the next meeting on Tuesday. He's totally bought into the idea of disc golf in Carneypatch, but I still need to sell it to the rest of the council.
I'm working in tandem with a local Eagle Scout prospect to get this sucka into the ground. The kid has managed to schmooz a manufaturor-to-be-named- later out of 9 free baskets, organized a work party at whatever park I can get and is already talking to the area merchants about donating concrete for the sleeves. I'll worry about the tees and signage after we get the go-ahead.
The wheels of city government turn very slowly out here, but with some luck look for a 2-3 star beginner/intermediate course to go into Valley Memorial Park or Loutsis Park (my preference) by the end of the year!

Let me get this one in first. TM is a county park so I'd be dealing with the county instead of the city. I've been scouting around there quite a bit lately and see the potential for something similar to White River.

UPDATE:
I met with the parks committee last night at city hall and they absolutely love the idea of a disc golf course in Loutsis Park! It turns out the city manager was instrumental in getting a course into the ground back in Kansas, and the rest of the committee was excited about a very low-cost attraction one minute from downtown. I speak in front of the full city council Tuesday the 17th for what should be rubber-stamp approval to move forward. We plan on having it up and running in October.
Not one dime will come out of the city coffers for construction. There's a portalet and a mutha-flippin' kiosk already in place. There will be a mixture of tight throws throw a skinny-tree forest and some more open hucks. We're still working out the details for tees and signage.
PM me if you ever want to see the layout sometime.

It is with great joy that I'd like to announce the passage of a motion to the Carnation City Council to install a 9-hole disc golf course in Loutsis Park at approximately 7:20pm PDT August 17, 2010. I will announce details soon as to who our generous benefactor is, but I'd like to thank the city council for their far-sightedness in embracing the game and Eagle Scout candidate Joe Stoudt for doing the leg work to get the targets, sleeves and collars. He will start raising funds soon to get the concrete so we can plant the holes. I'll be working this weekend on the final design so we can draw up the signage. More disc golf on the Eastside...you gotta be happy with that!

October has come and gone but we still don't have the course in the ground. It appears things are pushed back until the spring when the eagle scout candidate is done with football and has time to seek funding for the signage and concrete.
PM me if you're interested in sponsoring a hole. We think it'll be about $125 when all is said and done. If you own a small business it's a cool write-off and you get a sponsorship sign!

Steve Werner, long time friend and charter member of Disc Golf Outlaws passed away on March 13, 2009. Spirit Ridge is the disc golf course designed in his honor by his brother Ron and sister-in-law Wendy. Located just outside Carnation Washington, Spirit Ridge boasts challenging terrain, beautiful scenery and abundant wildlife (other than Ron Werner).

Maybe you have no idea what you're talking about, Jub. I will tell y'all that fundraising has begun, but Joe wants to keep it in the local business community. This is his project, not mine and not anyone elses. This is a project that the eagle scout candidate must spearhead from beginning to end. I am simply the course architect and was also enlisted to help sell the idea to the city council by presenting useful facts and potential numbers.
The project was almost totally scrapped when the benefactor made a surprise visit to the park and decided the park wasn't worthy. I managed to save it by asking a few questions and sending him a detailed map...turns out he never got out of his car to walk around and thought the whole course was going to be in the trees by the parking lot.
Joe does have a deadline approaching. If he doesn't meet it he will not get his rank. I believe it's in July. He's a great kid and I believe we'll be playing golf by summer.

If there's any difficulty raising funds, perhaps you could suggest a fundraiser tourney with temporary baskets + raffle/basket toss. Maybe local businesses could be offered some sort of advertising with hole sponsorships(maybe their business name on the permanent tee signs)?
*After posting, it occurred to me that this is a 'rights of passage' sort of thing for the scout. I'd assume this means that he's supposed to work independently for the most part. Maybe you could inform him of this site/thread so that he could use it as a resource.*

Toby, I see no difficulty in raising funds. The baskets are donated, so Joe is soliciting for tee signs, collars and concrete. He felt $125/hole would cover it. I gave him some leads and will be buying a sign for my own business. They will be the DGA split-panels with ads on one side and the hole description on the other.
Joe's aware of the disc golf community and the resources we can provide, but when we talked about work parties he felt he wanted to lead his troop in what little has to be done. There're some blackberries that need wranglin' around hole 4-6, but that's about it. If he needs our help I'll make sure to post it here. I hope to be on hand to simply show what we need cleared and where the baskets and tees are going. The tees will be natural at first but I'll lay in stall mats later on most likely.
NBDG, this is the place to read any updates. I've been updating only when there is real news to report. Joe wants to wait until things dry up a bit out here, and I support that decision. If anyone would like to see the layout I will be available tomorrow (Sat the 16th). Send me a pm. I welcome any input you may have before installation.

There are trees...lots of trees. Elevation comes into play on two holes if you can call a 5-8 foot drop an elevation change. The park used to be the river bottom...found that out the hard way while augering the holes for the baskets.
Anyway, Loutsis Park is located at 32401 E. Entwistle St, Carnation, WA 98104. Adam got us on the map at DGCR and I've plugged in the hole info. Jub, I agree. The work party did an incredible job with blackberry clearance, and Eric detailed 4 and 5 yesterday. The cattle may now graze for their errant tosses, but it's gonna take a really bad shot to lose a disc.
The course record stands at -3 after 3 days of play. I hope to find some of you out there, and don't be afraid to call or email me before you head out. The back 9 is mostly visualized, and I welcome all suggestions before I put the stakes down. Have fun!

Played it yesterday and met Luke one of the local kids that help put it in. Fun course but wish I would have brought some loppers or a machete. Getty, I must say that #5 is my favorite hole. I love how you have to play the opening between the shrubs and the low tree boughs. I learned the hard way that #5 can play much tougher when you hold your RH forehand too long. I managed to bounce my drive off of the chain link only to have it rest inside the fence behind the last big tree prior to going past the basket.
Looking forward the the additional holes!

I've got a buncha blue bricks ready to install Wednesday. The back 9 will not be well-marked, but if you look for the blue-taped tine on the previous basket and start walking you will find the nest tee. Hole 10 tee is close to the portapotty/bike path. I still have to decide where to locate a couple of tees. There's way more challenge to the blues with only a couple holes being easier. Word on the street has it that Wes hit the first ace in Carnation on #9 with a skipper witnessed by Shooter.

WOW! On 9 huh. Thats a tough shot to get all the way to the basket. I bounced one off the front of #1 and bounced another off the front of #7. Will have to try and make it out next weekend to play the blues!

The back 9 is now marked and ready for play! Edge will be happy to know that the #18 we played yesterday is not the one we marked out today. Y'all come on out to Carneypatch and huck a few!

I decided to take a cruise out east on I-90 to check out the Carnation course yesterday afternoon and as I neared the Fall City exit I noticed Getty's SUV (with the LSU sticker on it) headed the same way. He dialed me up on the cell phone and I followed him to the park. Nothing like have the course designer there to show you around! We started out on the front nine and I shot a three down (w/ one bogey) to Getty's bogey free -4. I then had the privilege of seeing the as yet unmarked alternate back nine. Things were going along pretty well on the back too and I was sitting at one under (on the back) as we walked up to the amazing looking eighteenth hole. The 25' wide fairway is about 300'+ and is lined with a perfectly aligned row of tall pines on each side, each spaced about five feet apart. I'll just let you know that you don't want to end up on the wrong side of the pines on the left side! I ended up gasping for breath shooting a six on the hole and ended up at one under for the round. We decided to play the front again and I managed a bogey free four down (birdied 2, 5, 7 & 9) and then said goodbye to Getty who was headed home. I nearly aced hole 7 with a skip that slipped vertically through the cylinder of the basket, tickling the chains. I was going to leave too but Brett V. showed up with a couple of friends and wanted me to show him the layout for the back, how could I refuse? This time I managed to shoot a three on the final hole along with birdies on 12, 13, & 14 to give me a respectable six under for the round, much better!
Leaving the park I went north from Carnation and then west on Novelty Hill Rd. so I could play Juel park on my way home. I wasn't sure how much more I wanted to play but after birdying the first two holes I figured I might as well keep going. Toward the end of the front nine I met a local named John that was playing alone so I joined him and we ended up playing the full eighteen finishing just as the sun was setting. I kept the damage to one bogey (on 15) and shot a six under which is a good round for me there. I told John about the course in Carnation and he asked me if it's similar to the Juel course. Well, they're both flat! but other than that, no, they aren't much alike. Juel is reasonably long and wide open with nothing but sky above and Carnation has about a bazillion trees and lots of low ceiling shots. Combining these two courses for a little one day mini tourney would be a fun time!

I guess the "old" hole eighteen will have to be a bonus hole now! Definitely a classic with that long, narrow fairway.

Last time I was there, before the back nine was in, I was looking at that tunnel hoping that would be #18, but it looked like the neighbors would be getting a lot of deflections in their backyard. We should install a large net and bring the tunnel back!

That would be fun, and I'd gladly put time in to help run it.

There is also a private course called spirit Ridge that is super fun in Carnation. I put some info in my review on dgcr about getting in contact with Ron Werner.

Got a chance to go out and play the course as a full 18 yesterday. The blues overall are a little more difficult but very fun. Shot -5 through the round.
