Spelling is a trivial matter; one that allows those who can spell to feel superior to those who can't. I was raised to think it is a big deal, but I am learning that it is not. I have found that I can usually decipher messages even when they are not correctly spelled. I did not mean to attack anyone, I just have a knee-jerk reaction to misspelled words that causes me to spout off. Back to the main point, good on you Josh for running what promises to be another great Whistler's Bend event!

Doesn't this conflict with Hab Rec? I thought that no one is history was going to repeat last years epic mistake of scheduling a sanctioned event (last years Willamette Open) over the Hab Rec.

Can this event be on Sunday, then we can play BOTH!!!!!!!!!!!

That would actually be pretty sick if you think about it...

That would be one hell of a weekend Milo on Saturday and Whistler's on Sunday. I have already thought about this, but would people come down for Whistler's after playing Milo all day Saturday? I really didn't think the NUI would take any entries from the Hab Rec.

I would submit that it would conflict for the hard core golfers such as myself, I would definitly play both events. I am however flying out to USDGC that Sunday, so maybe I couldn't play Sunday...but either way I think it would be best for everyone if these events were on seperate days. Why create a conflict when there doesn't need to be one?

Glad to see everyone is having fun on here.

So, are we really just looking the other way here, or is someone going to at least try and resolve this scheduling conflict? As a potential future state coordinator, this is exactly the type of easily avoidable conflict I wish to eliminate.

So...really? Not going to move this to Sunday? Why?

the flogging putter
July 30th, 2010, 09:05 AM
I don't think there is much of a conflict between these 2 events. Anyone who is planning on playing the Hab Rec will still play the Hab Rec and many people in southern Oregon that wouldn't be playing in a event that day will get the option to play in the NUI. You are thinking conflict try thinking options. I know a weekend at Milo and then Whistler's would be epic, but I really only see one or to hard core dudes maybe playing both.

Ron,
I think you are a great asset to the sport and things could surely improve with your ambition.
As a potential state coordinator you may want to take some time to get to know some of the upcoming TD's a wee bit better.
Mr. Joshua is not and would never just "look the other way".
And I shouldn't say it but oh well ... I call bullshit on .......
"SO...really? Not going to move this to Sunday? Why?
Did you try to talk to Josh before you posted?
I feel the TD should hold the event on the day that works the best for them.
I see no conflict as one is sanctioned, one is not and they are more than 200 miles apart.
Good luck with your campaign.

My input..... :cop:

Josh DID NOT "look the other way" he contacted me about dates that were avail.

After much discussion..... It was decided that there was NOT much of a conflict. I did inform him of HabRec and after some reservation He still wished to do this event on this date. EVEN if it did cost him some players from the "North".
There is NO compairison of this "conflict" to last years with W.O., as stated they are more than 200 miles apart and Southern Oregon surely deserves it's share of the schedule, in this case.

I fail to see a conflict, really. While I have one PERSONALLY (as I will be at Hab/Rec this year as I missed it last year), I do not see how this is a PDGA concern. Hab/Rec is not PDGA sanctioned and, until it is, it should not be given any consideration when it comes to scheduling.

Those would be my $.02....

I am sure that HabRec will be a great event for the northern golfers. Those of us who cannot travel during the summer months appreciate that there is another PDGA event at Whistlers. This will be the third one this year and hopefully we can continue to hold three or more PDGA events at this awesome course every year.

Yeah it's a bummer for me as well. I had every intention of playing in the Hab Rac this year, and now I want to play in this event as well. I'll probably end up flipping a lot of coins. Oh well, two events to choose from is better than no events to choose from.

What you are worried about is a very valid reason, but you need to step back and see that one is a sanctioned event, and one isn't so there really should not be that much of a problem. In saying that you do bring up very good point, man how awesome would that be to play a round at milo and a round at whistlers in the same day!!! Biggest bagger has to go to trasher.:trophy:

How can anyone be other than what their rating indicates? Are you claiming that they did not shoot the scores that they shot? Seems to me the rating would be the MOST accurate way to describe one's skill level. How else are you going to define it? The only argument I would buy is that the ratings are incorrect because he TD submitted the reports wrong, and THAT can be corrected.

It's not that simple TL. I personally know players who avoid tough courses/events to keep their rating up. I also know players who only play an event or three per year (at their favorite local course(s)). Therefore, IMO, a players rating is not the only indicator of their overall skill level. In general, this approach leads to some players being over-rated.

It's been discussed here before, but I believe a player must play 8-10 events (24-40 sanctioned rounds), at 6-8 different courses, in a one-year period to establish an accurate rating.

How can anyone be other than what their rating indicates?
Well,
I think the biggest reason may be that they have a severe case of:
PLAYINGDOWNITOSIS
Let's take you for example:
You played pro at WBDS and tore it up.
Did you think you were only playing over your head?
You played over your rating.
You have pro level skills, I saws them bud.
I think when someone plays down they may sometimes feel they don't have to play their best to be the best.
Does the PDGA still have their definition of skill levels?
IMO the real definition of a pro regarding distance, types of throws, putting, etc., should carry more weight than a number on a piece of paper.
Kinda like that integrity thing.
Sheesh my ratings once would've let me play Am.
Heck they still might, but would I do it?
No, because I know my skill level is above my ratings.
I guess that's one way someone could be other than what their rating indicates.
Like I've said I like the rating game.
The way I see it is, it ain't perfect so squeakiness may help.
Is the PDGA totally happy w/ it or are they always looking for a way to improve it?
Prolly here from Chuck soon. :biggrin2:

Ratings are only based on rounds played in a PDGA sanctioned event. It is possible that a person could bomb a rated round and then play the course the next weekend in a non-PDGA tournament and tear it up. Which tournament do you use to decide what skill level the player is? I have shot rounds at courses that would be 1000+ rated if I were playing a PDGA tournament, but I only have one 1000 rated round in PDGA tournament play. My current rating is 954 and I play open, not because of my rating but because of my skill level.

The counterpoints I found convincing were:

* Some players make intentional moves to "protect" their rating (which is lame, IMO).
* If you you don't have many rated rounds, your rating is less accurate.
* The lower skill division you play in, the worse you tend to play.

However,

* I don't plan to move up to Pro Master unless the Advanced master players with ratings much higher than mine move up first.
* Unfortunately, I can't make the NUI.
* I will play some future events as a Pro Master, such as the WBDS.
* I have no delusions. The rating system does not lie about me or my competition.

It is a fun debate, I will agree. The golf I played with Jordan at the WBDS was out of my head, and Jordan was an absolute machine. Honestly, I have rarely seen either one of us play that well; I think we were just on pure adrenalin from the whole concept of taking on the vaunted Yoseman and his trusty sidekick (which may bear out your Playingdownitosis theory)!

I shouldn't really be playing (so many) (multi-day) tournaments. I am not on a level playing field since I never practice; multi-day tourney rounds are the only rounds I play; they are hell on my family life; I miss just having a fun casual round with a friend or two; I am burning out to the point where I just don't have the burning eagerness going in to an event, my attitude is more ho-hum about the whole thing.
