Take about 25 of your good discs that you got from various tourneys over the years and sell them to NA. Then turn around and give it back to them in the form of registration. IN other words, this tourney is allowing you to actually give away plastic you don't want and use it to pay for the tourney to get more plastic you dont want, but a rad shirt and field bag you do want. AWESOME!
So, basically the tourney is free and you will have a blast and get a mad cool players pack with it.

Thanks NA for putting this on. Can't wait.

$75 does seem like a lot of money for an Am tournament. As Bob reminded me, the Beaver State Fling Registration was $75 and was a Super Tour Event.

I'm not trying to bash this tournament, it just seems like it's too highly priced.

The Memorial, Masters Cup, BSF were all $75. Most tournaments are in the 40-65 range, whats a few more dollars, especially when they already promising a fat players pack... just be glad it doesn't cost as much as ball golf...

So when Next Adventure (really describes their business model, just needs Your at the beginning).

Do they take new as well as used?
If New then at what price do they pay you? Wholesale? Retail? (Retail, yeah right!)

This leads me to two important questions

How does it make you fell when
Winnings were valued at one price but returnable for a lesser value?

Then how would you feel
If you saw that same disc back on the shelves marked up to retail again?

Side question
Does this practice not contradict the concept of "Amateur" status?

Basically, All you are doing is giving the mark up to two different entities and you walk with cash. Exactly like the AM TD (who places) really CASHES IN by excepting his own scrip.

I thought you were on the new meds since you haven't brought this up in so long. Please give it a rest. We've been over this issue (ad nauseum) at least three times in the last nine years. The horse is already dead, in fact it's been cremated and the ashes thrown to the wind. I can't take it again captain!

Jub,

Have you EVER been to Next Adventure? My guess is no.

I'm thinking it would be a good idea if you did a little research before you go shooting your mouth off on a public forum. Next Adventure has been one of the best tournament supporters Portland disc golf has had over past few years. They have been exceptionally generous with us, and they deserve all of the success they have had as result of that support.

Here are just a few of the things Next Adventure does for the disc golf community down here:

1) Next Adventure allows Stumptown Disc Golf to use their store after hours for our club meetings because it is very centralized and convenient for our members. They do this free of charge, and on their own time... and they even buy the pizza and beverages.

2) Next Adventure gives all Stumptown club members a discount in the store, and not just on the disc golf stuff.

3) Next Adventure gives our TDs a scrip bump so our event payouts will be even better than normal at all of our local events.

4) Next Adventure helped us get excellent pricing on 21 custom powdercoated baskets for the Stub Stewart course that will be opening up shortly.

5) Next Adventure is teaming up with Stumptown to provide professional, accurate signage for Pier Park.

6) They allow customers in their store to join the Stumptown club and have helped us increase membership each and every year.

and on an on...

So, back to your uninformed rant...

Do they take new as well as used?
If New then at what price do they pay you? Wholesale? Retail? (Retail, yeah right!)

So what if they buy used discs that players no longer want and then resell them to players who want that disc. Where is the harm in that? Of course they mark those discs up a bit. They are a business, not a charity. Why you would have a problem with that is beyond me.

How does it make you feel when winnings were valued at one price but returnable for a lesser value?

I never felt this way... because they bump UP our scrip value to more than it WAS worth.

Then how would you feel if you saw that same disc back on the shelves marked up to retail again?

You wont see a used disc selling for retail. Duh. If, however, I did see a used disc in the used disc box for more than I sold it to them for I would say "Good for them.".

Does this practice not contradict the concept of "Amateur" status?

I could answer this if any of the points you previously brought up were even slightly valid, so I guess my answer to this is: "WTF?"

Nice try Jub, but it was a swing and a miss. All you've managed to accomplish is insulting one of our biggest supporters down here. Way to go, Jub! </sarcasm>

Yes I agree with everything Jeff stated about Next Adventure they are so super supportive of the disc golfers in our area. Here are a few more things they are doing as well. For one the are the title sponsor for the Chick Flick. We could not put on the best disc golf event for women in the nation without Bryan and Next Adventure. Along with the schwag for the players pack, raffle, ctps, ring or fire that is provided by Bryan and Next Adventure remember when you go to get your lunch and icy cold beer that is provided in your players pack at the Chick Flick not only is it provided by Next Adventure it is cooked and prepared personally by Bryan and the Next Adventure crew. They also cooked lunch Saturday and Sunday at this years BSF.

Also they are sponsoring 3 disc golfers in the community 3 armatures, and one pro. Not too many armatures have the opportunity to have such a generous sponsor, and I and the rest of the Flight Crew are so grateful.

Anyway stop being so grumpy and don't sign up if it is not your cup of tea. I for one can't wait for this event it is going to be just one big disc golf party. :yay:

THANKS BRYAN & NEXT ADVENTURE!!!!!

My comments were not necessarily aimed at N/A but the players who buy into the rational that "it was not my money to start with so I don't care who (how much or often) profits off it.

It sounds like N/A is doing some good things but as business it does not pay to sponsor Pros. Sure the ads good but it does not directly translate into sales.

Of course any business would let you take a discount off anything in the store and then increased foot traffic by

giving the discount to clubbers (a captive audience)
taking club memberships reinforcing the above statement
and the euphonium of bumping up just reiterates the point

is also a no brain er

Do they take new as well as used?
If New then at what price do they pay you? Wholesale? Retail? (Retail, yeah right!)

here is the disconnect

Used plastic has markings on them and it's pretty obvious that they are used.

New plastic implies that it's straight from the factory and that it was not previously picked or stacked as payout.

Side question
Does this practice not contradict the concept of "Amateur" status?

Basically, All you are doing is giving the mark up to two different entities and you walk with cash. Exactly like the AM TD (who places) really CASHES IN by excepting his own scrip.

So bottom line is winners don't care if they are getting the shaft as long as it's the losers money.

Please disregard any and all comments now and in the future from Jub on this forum thread. His comments on this thread have no merit and are not in any way reflective of the opinion of the disc golf community that you support so heavily. He is not engaged in anything that you participate in or support. We are so thankful to have you involved in DG in Portland. I am thrilled if you profit financially by participating. After all, you don't have .org in your web address and shouldn't. Thanks for all you do. again, I hate to have to apologize for Jub, but he clearly needs someone to.

Jub, don't you ever get tired of unfounded bashing? Why don't you run your own AM tournament, and win, and pocket your own scrip in cash? When you popped off in that other thread (http://www.nwdiscgolfnews.com/forum/showpost.php?p=70410&postcount=25), you were so nonsensical, that no none even bothered to respond. You know I love you, but lay off the Psycho Kool Aid, will ya?

One of the few upsides of a free market capitalist economy is that consumers can vote with their dollars. If you think the NA Am Championship is such a ripoff, then don't register.

Wow, do I feel my first banning coming on? I love to drink and post!

Seriously, Jub, your targets are WAY off the mark! Dude, the (ex-)OR series events, Stumptown events, Whistler's Bend events, Milo events, all ROCK! No one is getting ripped off, it is easy to see. Why don't you pick on some truly BAD tournaments, like the ones where the money OBVIOUSLY does not add up, like those rigged turkey raffles, pathetic northern PDGA events with no leaderboard, no tee signs, and no maps, herbal tournaments where players are promised player packs and then given NOTHING, etc. COME ON, GET REAL! I am starting to think that whatever you say, the opposite is true!

Take it from me, I have been to hundreds of tournaments (no shit), and I can tell a ripoff from a good deal a mile away. Perhaps you can not.

Is the flyer up?
Not PDGA?
When I starting seeing all Next Adventure was doing for disc golf in the PNW, particularly their involvement in great tournaments and Stumptown I started buying my plastic and gear there. They are both smart and generous and that wins my support.
I also love how conveniently located they are, their predictable hours and friendly staff.
On the other hand, I also love where Jub is located, as well as his predictability.
PLEASE don't ban Treelove or the calendar. This is all undoubtedly my fault.

TreeLove said nothing that I could see that would even get him a warning, let alone a banning.

The only tournament I ever did with NA involved (because I live 4 hours North) was at Mt. Adams for the WBDGW this year and they seemed to be on the ball and had tons of CTP's as well as an awesome ring of fire with excellent prizes and a very well run tournament. They don't strike me as being shady or trying to rip people off; it seems like just the opposite and any person or business doing great things for disc golf anywhere needs to be praised. Good luck with the tournament everyone, have fun.

I think treelove should be banned because he was drinking and typing. I would never do that.....doh! too late.

I think Jub should explain what this means..."and the euphonium of bumping up just reiterates the point"
A euphonium is a brass musical instrument similar to a small tuba. Are people playing tubas in the Oregon Tourneys? Wouldn't the noise be a courtesy violation?

If there was an Olympic event of funny shit, this would win the prettiest colored medal. Purple, I think.

I am so getting a euphonium for bumping up and restating my points. Especially during tournament play. When you say small tuba, though... will I need another caddy for that or will the one I currently employ be able to attach it to my bag, somehow?

So a quick question for the upcoming event. I am a new player, just started in May. The tournament sounds like a lot of fun but I am concerned that my skill level would be too low for the AM intermediate level. Would this be an issue? I don't care if I finish dead last but I don't want to hold up the play. I have played Pier once and averaged 4s and 5s on the holes. Sorry for the newbie question but I don't want to sign up and be a drag on the play.

Welcome to the sport and the site Etherag! No worries about the skill level brother. It is not uncommon for a beginner to sign up for a tournament, and it in no way negatively affects the play. I highly recommend you sign up and enjoy what is sure to be an awesome tournament! Hope to see you out there.

... I am a new player...Would this be an issue? It sounds like you are concerned about all the right things, thus qualified to play in the tournament. I estimate intermediates will be throwing more 4s than 3s at the tournament, although the winner of that division will probably be someone that throws a few more 3s than 4s. 5s definitely aren't out of the question at Pier. If you do have a bad hole and you end up having to take a couple extra throws, just don't get mad, make a scene and take too long to recover and throw your next shot. Be courteous and brush off the bad throw(s) and you'll fit right in!

You can always find the latest information on http://www.fireflydiscgolf.com

By the way the retail value of the player's pack is now over $135

In addition to the discs and mini, the player's pack includes the dri-fit shirt, fade bag, a huk lab patch, and an etched pint glass.

For those of you struggling to sign up online, starting Monday Next Adventure will take your CASH for registrations in store.

Next Adventure is also paying for permanent tee signs at Pier and an information kiosk as a way to make a permanent improvement to the park.

Man, I was really hoping to play this event. I know the TD's run a top notch venue and put a lot of planning into the events. Of course the Next Adventure has really stepped up to support local disc golf and all that support has helped the sport grow and get more recognized. Be lucky you live in Oregon that has such a strong DG community:yay:.

With that being said; I am still not playing in the tournament. Yep, not gonna do it, and I have a good reason why. The 28th is the same day I get MARRIED:trophy:, so that takes the cake. Yep, sorry ladies I am off the market:cool2:lol. I actually can't believe it is coming up next week!!

But jokes aside, I hope a lot of people show up to this tourney and show that Oregon disc golfers have just as much love and support as the TD's, vendors and all who make competitive disc golf so much fun.

Will scrip be awarded to top finishing Intermediates? MM1 looks small, and skewed. MA2 looks deep, and balanced. Would finishing, say, 5th in an MA2 field of 50 players possibly yield MORE scrip than finishing say, 3rd in an MM1 field of only 9 players? How would that payout play out? Are there more trophies for deeper fields (i.e. 1st through 3rd for MA1 and MA2, but 1st only in smaller divisions)? Are there player caps on individual pools? Would division change requests incur the TD's wrath? Thank you, Smokin' Joe, and me.

Wog
August 24th, 2010, 07:29 PM
Scrip will be awarded to at least the top 40% of each division. Larger divisions will pay closer to 50%, smaller divisions closer to 40%.

Looking at the proposed numbers from the PDGA formulas 5th in MA2 would pay $75 and 3rd in MM1 would pay $55. However, first place for MM1 and MA2 currently pay the same.

There are EXACTLY 3 trophies for each division. (The trophies are amazing for this event. It is hard to describe, but let me just say, batteries are included!)

The cap for each pool is 64.

Wrath...doubtful...Bad Karma...maybe! :)

Personally, I hope to see a few more in the MM1 field, not less.

We are KOi fusion. Starting in 2009 as one mobile taco truck, Chef Bo Kwon was inspired by the pioneering vision of LA’s Kogi. Using the genre of Korean Fusion as a blueprint, we set about creating our own niche within this category, using Mama Kwon’s secret family marinades, local, fresh vegetables, and locally-sourced tortilla vendors to create a new twist that’s uniquely Portland. We pride ourselves on using locally grown ingredients, and we believe that as a member of the Portland community, it’s our duty to use fresh and environmentally-friendly techniques whenever possible.

A disc is only O.B. if it lands completely inside the white chalk lines which were painted yesterday. I fear that means there will be a soccer event going on at the same time as our tournament, so for safety of the footballers it has to be O.B. There is still plenty of room to go high and right.

Yes, that is a digital picture frame in the lower right corner of the trophy. It will come preloaded with your picture on it taken by the official photographer for the tournament.

One other "secret" that hasn't leaked out, at least not that I heard, is there will also be an official videographer who has been hired by Next Adventure to take video both days. He will then produce a movie of the weekend. Watch for a Next Adventure Premier Movie night coming in September where everyone will be invited to check out the video. We hope to use this video and clips from it to promote the 2011 NAAC and hopefully bring in more sponsors so it can be an even better tournament.

THANK YOU! once again to Next Adventure for doing what they do to make tournaments the best they can possibly be. Thanks to Steve and Ryan for running the best tournament I have ever been a part of. Congrats to Little Pina III for crushing all weekend and taking home that awesome and unique first place trophy. That final nine was incredible and I'm so glad I was able to be a part of it. What an amazing weekend!!! Seriously if you were not at Pier this past weekend for the Next Adventure Amateur Championships-NAAC then you missed one heck of a tournament:

The Players pack was the best I have ever received :yay:

The new tee signs and kiosk were amazing thanks to Next Adventure & Portland parks :yay:

Playing the shorts on Saturday was awesome & then the longs on Sunday :yay:

The food was the best ever thanks to Ian, Bryan & the Next Adventure crew :yay:

The trophies were off the hook, and I was fortunate enough to take home one of the 1st place trophies which included a digital frame with professionally taken pictures of me playing in the tournament :trophy:

The players party was so awesome with live music diner & tons of schwag that was given away in an awesome ring of fire & players raffle.

The tournament ran super smooth, and stayed on schedule all weekend. Next year it will sell out quick for sure because it is one you don't want to miss for sure.

Thanks again to Next Adventure & the crew for being so super supportive of disc golf in Oregon we are so lucky to have you guys. :bowing: Also thanks to Steve & Ryan of Firefly Production you guys really know how to put on an awesome event. Thanks too for the voluteers who helped out Jason Pinkle, Dan Murphy, and anyone else who pitched in. :yay: Lastly thanks to all the ladies I played with those were some of the funnest rounds I have ever played. :cheerleader:

I'm curious what you want the guy to do? He's old enough to play Grand Master, obviously doesn't have a desire to play Pro, throws a maximum of 300-350', and is a all-around nice guy. Should we ban him from playing just because he has talent and muscle memory that goes back to the beginning of time? Why is it unfair to let him play in a division he is 100% qualified to play in? Should someone go Gillooly on the guy and take out a knee (he already has bad knees!)? If you need protection from good players then maybe you should consider playing in a division that you are qualified for. For reference: the maximum rating an amateur player can have and still play in intermediate is 935. A player with a rating below 900 is qualified to play in the recreational division (when offered). Does anyone think the PDGA should add an Intermediate Master division?

Congratulations Jeff, I can't think of a nicer guy to take home the trophy!
