OK, since there will be no Fernburner this year, we're going to have a little something as a replacement. Several details have yet to be worked out, but here's the skinny:

This event will be in the spirit of the 'Burner, but different on a few notes.

First and foremost, I'll be running it instead of Sara--she finally gets to enjoy the tourney like the rest of us have. And I get to stress myself out. :cheerleader:
Secondly, I know a big highlight of the 'Burner was the amount and quality of the food provided. Preparing that amount of food is a huge ordeal and I'm not going to try to take that on, so as of now, it's BYOG (bring your own grub). I'll need to check, but I believe Adam said there are grills for people to use. If however, someone wanted to take on the task of cooking up meals, by all means, let me know.
This will be a fundraiser tournament. I'm hoping to at least be able to get one more basket for the Mud, and a little extra for the maintenance and upkeep of the course--just a little something so we can all say thanks to the Fletchers and Ol' Bob for all they've provided.
Registration is going to be very limited. I'm limiting the registration to 72 spots, several of which are already spoken for (Adam, Sara, Ol' Bob, etc.). I know a lot of people want to get into the Fernburner every year but for some of us, it's become something of an annual pilgrimage. I've got the results from the previous years, and registration will work like this: for anyone that's been to the last two consecutive 'Burners, you will get two weeks of priority registration. For everyone that was at last year's 'Burner, you'll get one week priority registration. After that, it will be open to all. I'm going to be like the German police with this too, firm. Firm but fair. You want to get into this tournament, you will have to register like everyone else. I don't care how good of friends we are, your name needs to be on the list if you want a spot. Anybody that has been to prior Fernburners know that this hasn't always been the case and a lot of people assumed they were in, and just showed up the day of. This, among other things, led to big headaches for Sara, and well, people wonder why there isn't a Fernburner this year.... :whistler:

I know that the scheduling overlaps the Eugene Celebration and that'll probably bum a few folks out, but as you know, it's impossible to schedule an event without overlapping another these days. But, Eugene is a good distance away from Skamokowa, and a lot of the Fernburner peeps aren't drawn to big sanctioned tourneys anyway.

Many more details to come soon, but I just wanted to get that out there so people can mark their calendars. And no, "Sumpin' Sumpin'" is not the name of the tournament, though it's not the worst I've heard. :D

You could call it a "fernament."

I'm willing to trade my birth for a 22 oz. IPA (or another basket). I'm sticking with my pledge to remain tournament free. I'm kickin' the habit, I tells ya. My stress level is going down in a serious way.

I was all excited... until you mentioned that this is on the same weekend as EC. Could not possibly miss that one.
Have fun and hopefully catch you guys next year.

Early registration is now available! Below is the list of those that are eligible. I just sent out an email with the same list, but I don't have contact info for everyone. Those whose names are in bold are ones I don't have contact info for. Please take a look and if you know the person, please let them know about the tournament and their eligibility:
Edit: a couple email addresses bounced back on me, the names have been bolded as well. Sam, you need to empty your inbox, apparently.

Entry fees are $30 for all open divisions, $25 for all advanced divisions, and $20 for all amateur/recreational divisions. Add $2 if you would like to be in the ace pot. Tee sign sponsorships are also available for $15. Camping is available for $10 per tent (I believe). The easiest way to send money to me is paypal, which you can send to timcoye@yahoo.com. You can also, of course, mail in the entry to:

Tim Coye
13201 Linden Ave. N #307A
Seattle, WA 98133

You can also pay the day of, but if you do, I'd like some sort of convenience gratuity, be it a few extra bucks, a tasty beverage, some baked goods, etc. ;)

The main tournament will be a standard 2 casual rounds of singles golf, just like the Burner. In addition though, Andrew Rivers has graciously volunteered to run a glow doubles match AND to roll out the infamous Throwbot competition!

Feel free to contact me with any questions, email/PM is best, but you can also call me at 206-276-8873.

Funny story, last year while hanging out at one of the campfires, I met another guy named Tim. I asked, "Oh, are you the sausage guy?" Without missing a beat, he was like "How did THAT get out?"

According to post #6 early registration has been open since August 2... not sure how the dates got changed, but that's good news for us not on the pre-reg list, eh... no?, oh well, guess I'll start the countdown.

I noticed the other B&B DG course in Southern Washington has also picked the 11th for a tourney. Maybe the pressure is off for filling the Fernearner up to bursting. To tell the truth, it's okay with me. It's possible that all the rooms at the inn are reserved already. So, the professional courtesy considerations could be down to, no harm, no foul.

Ol' Bob
August 19th, 2010, 02:33 PM
So, maybe I was way off base with my "no harm, no foul," call. It turns out there is plenty of room at the inn for Baby Jesus' virgin mother (or even disc golfers). Hey folks, fill the place up.

Tim
August 20th, 2010, 09:06 PM
I know, crazy right? WA State Championships are happening that weekend too, as it turns out. The funny thing is that I was actually trying to avoid conflicts when I scheduled this one.

No sweat though, I'm still steadily getting entries and we're about half full (though mysteriously, still some of the people who tried to sign up before the full registration was open haven't gotten back in touch with me.) I'm not too worried, if it fills, great, if not, then less stress and more beer for us!

I will be running the Friday Dub's at the Burner' this year. Probably start around 6:00 or so to allow for the later arrivals. Let me know if you are planning on showing late and want to play, we can hold out a little longer. I'm thinking $6 + $1 ace pot. Half will go to the basket fund and the other half will get paid out.

My wife Adrienne has volunteered to make up a big batch of spaghetti, nothing like a good meal after a late round of drinking, I mean disc golf! Let me know if your interested, so we know how much to make. I'm sure we won't charge for it, but there will be a basket fund jar conveniently located on the table!

I will be kicking in $50 straight to the basket fund, lets see how many baskets we can get for the Fletchers (and Ol' Bob) and this great place!

For the record, everyone involved in this Kicks Ass (especially you Tim)!!!

Sara and I will be down there the weekend prior to due a little tune up on the course and I will be trying my best to coax some salmon out of a local river. Not feeling like cooking, but if sucessful i'll donate a fillet to the TD and his minions for all their much appreciated efforts!

As far as camping goes Mom is hoping to keep most of it OB (Over by Bob's) but I'm sure exceptions can be made if arranged.

Great to have you back Gilberts, you were missed last year!

Since we're getting off easy this year, anything else I can help with please let me know. I'll be down there Wed the 8th.

Seriously..Awsome guys.

The word I get about shoehorning the campers all over to this side is it's because all the rooms aren't rented at the inn and tents all around could disturb non-disc golfing guests. If all the rooms are full of golfers, then the camping scene will be as usual.

I've tried the fish whisper, but it usually comes out as more of an explicative-laced tirade to the finicky little bastards laughing at my offering!

One week to go and things are coming along nicely for the Earner. Chris Schuler is making up some sweet glass trophies for the first place winners, I haven't personally seen his work, but several people have told me he does excellent stuff (I think the word "amazing" may have been used too). Louis Bontempo (Bucket Designs) is making some cool patches for the player packs--I've seen the prototype, and they look badass.

Looks like we'll be playing two rounds, one of 22 holes, and a second of 18 with alt. pads/placements where available. Still have yet to finalize the layout for glow golf, but it'll likely be a 9 or 12 hole layout (sticking to the more open holes for less broken ankles).

Here is the official player's list I have so far, still have a good number of people who have shown interest but haven't committed:

Good time to announce that I have just created Alt. #18. That's the one with 195' shot under the vine maple arch. Instead of going back to the left to get to the tee from #17, you go back and to the right. It's about 215', though I haven't measured it for the record yet. It is a straight, narrow, shot designed to be the midrange challenge hole.

Rock your Buzzz, Buzz your Roc.

I will place a measuring tape on the basket and put up a board so that the Innova, Discraft, and also-ran-brand, shooters can record their CTP distances. The best shot of each brand gets a prize. The best of the best brand gets something really cool, and the best of the runners-up labels get booby prizes. We'll get that Roc/Buzzz thang sorted out.

Hey, this is the biggest, hungriest, of the old tire baskets so I will expect the grand prize to go to an ace, maybe even a play-off of the acers.

Me and a couple of locals tapped that virgin yesterday. Them two guys bounced off of trees, and I hit the green and birdied from 15 feet. If a noodle arm such as I can get that close... (FLX Buzzz, of course.)

Hola,

Sounds great Bob, looking foward to seeing everyone on friday. I'm heading down about noon on friday, might even make it in time for the doubles. Barrett and Sean, might or might not make it in time for the doubles, Barrett making it on time depends on when his wife unlocks his chain. :biggrin2::biggrin2: Ol' Bob hopefully you still have the disc I left behind at last years furnburner, don't even remember what it was, except it was almost new (maybe), Dam short term memory problems. ;);)

Okay, I got my estimate of the distance on Alt. #18 kinda wrong. It's about the same as the primary at around 195 feet. (No wonder I got my Buzzz within fifteen feet.)

I have a crazy amount of stuff to do in the next week. I don't need it to rain.

As Tim mentioned, I'll be holding a Throwbot Throwdown at the Mud. For those that weren't at the 666 Terror Creek event, this is your chance to enjoy a little tradition brought with us from Virginia.

ThrowBot doubles is essentially played by an "operator" and a "robot". The "robot" is given a blindfold and directed to the first teepad, at the teepad they are spun around several times so they don't know where the hole is. The "operator" then directs them any way they want (talking, physically moving them) on how to throw the next shot AND guides them to safely get to the next lie! If you want a little sample, check out this youtube video starting at about 2:00 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OE-RyLrlmQ

To keep this short and to try to fit in a bunch of teams, each player is going to get 1 hole where they play as the operator and 1 hole where they play as the robot (2 holes total). I'll be running this during the lunch break and any time players have available on Saturday including after the singles rounds until dark.

It will cost $1.00 per team and I will again be working on a pair of trophies (http://s252.photobucket.com/albums/hh37/cefire/?action=view&current=IMG_6165.jpg) to give out to the winners :trophy:

So pick your partner carefully

I do apologize for scheduling on this date, however to say it is a "foul" is kinda out of line. We made the date because it was the date available to us. And I hope your event is AMAZING Tim. and I Hope Ol' Bob can relax a little bit with the event out of the way:wink2:

Thanks for the good wishes. Unfortunately, it's going to be a little less amazing now. I was just informed (third hand) that the trophies are not getting made after all. Maybe if I had a little more warning, I could have figured something out, but I'm sorry folks, I don't think I'll be able cobble together trophies in the next 12 hours. On the plus side, there'll be a little more money going towards everyone's payout. And hey, the weather forecast isn't looking too bad.

Thanks for the positive vibes guys, I'm feeling better this morning and getting pretty amped for the weekend. Hiccups are inevitable when putting an event together, but the hiccupsneezecoughfarts can throw you for a loop sometimes.

Anyway, the rest of the weekend is looking good. Louis Bontempo managed to get patches made, even though he fought through pneumonia to do so. I've got enough for everyone that's registered so far, and a few leftovers, but quantities are limited. Here's a little peek at 'em (http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u67/timcoye/fernearner/patch.jpg), they even look cool in the dark! (http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u67/timcoye/fernearner/glow.jpg)

Pertinent details for the weekend:

I think most people are staying the night Friday, but for anybody who's wondering, the players meeting will be at 9:00 on Saturday, please get checked in early, or even better check in with me sometime this evening. Tourney Central will be at the cottage this year instead of the main house. There is still some room available, if you want in, please get in touch. I'll be around for a while longer in the AM, but will soon not have internet access, and eventually, no cell access either. You can try reaching me at 206-276-8873, or if I'm out of reach, you can leave a message with the Inn directly: 360-795-8770.

Doubles Friday evening, Throwbot Saturday and Glow Dubs Saturday night--thank you Gilby, Andrew, and Sheila, you guys rock! I have some stuff for glow golf Saturday night and will have some LEDs for sale if you don't have your own.

Spaghetti dinner tonight for anyone that's interested. Look for Gilby and his wife Adrienne in their high-falutin' trailer.

One other big thing, hopefully everyone knows already, but please remember that the Inn has a strict NO DOG POLICY. We all love our 4 legged friends, but please make arrangements to leave any dogs home, no matter how mellow they might be.

I think that covers the bases, I'm stoked to be there soon and see everyone! And I don't want to jinx anything, but Accuweather looks promising....

Sorry to hear about the glass situation Tim. Not very cool! But Im pretty sure the beer will still be cold and hey, thats all that really matters this weekend!

A little change of plans for the sphagetti feed, due to a recent pregnancy for Adrienne and I, she won't be making the trip! But, the famous Chef, "Uncle Terry Surratt" will be filling her shoes in the kitchen.

Im super stoked! A new baby on the way AND a weekend at the Mud! Lets ROCK!!!

Hope everyone has a blast at this event. I wanted to go but it wasn't in the cards again this year. My check engine light came on yesterday and it's a long way from home. Gonna have to figure out why before any more road trips.

Great times out there for this fern-noob - the highlight for me was the amazing meteor shower show on Friday night.

I won't ruin any of the surprise about the main event scores (mainly because I don't know them :) ) - but in the ThrowBot throwdown we had a two team tie for first after an extra hole playoff.

Bob and Colin tied with team Fletcher at 11 over the first three holes and then got pars on the playoff hole - they split the trophies one per team :trophy:

Actually, we decided to take joint ownership of both trophies, which were then commandeered By Adam's mom. They are fine art adorning the Inn at Lucky Mud now. We all get visitation rights.

Congrats to loocid on his first ace and better still, deucing hole ten!

I'm so tired, but am not asleep because the leg cramps I knew where coming just got me a little while ago. I knew I was overdoing it this past three days. I know... I already took my potassium. The cramps have subsided and soon I will be in a happy little coma.

Good times, good times. We had some day of entries, and we also had a bunch of no-shows, but in the end we had 32 players (including Ol' Bob who had to face some fierce competition in the Wizened division). With those kind of numbers, it feels a lot less like a tournament, and more like a bunch of friends who somehow manage to not play in one giant group. There were some old regulars, but also a whole bunch of new faces this year. And with beautiful weather and the serenity of the Mud, there were smiles all around (well, for most of us that are able to have fun playing disc golf, even when we shoot one of the hottest rounds of the day.) :whistler:

In any case it was a good weekend for the Fletchers and the folks of the Mud. Some may call it a home field advantage, but I prefer to think of it as Karma. Here are the results, due to the small numbers there weren't any age protected divisions (par for the weekend was 120):

As Bob mentioned we did have an ace for the day, Colin hit #21--for those that have been to the Mud before, it's the one shooting downhill out of the woods into the field, most definitely a great one to get!

There were great times to be had out there for sure, but the real news of the weekend was that we managed to raise $681 for the Mud! You don't need to be a mathematician to see that that is no small feat for a little over 30 people. All the runner ups in the open fields donated their winnings, as well as many in the Ams. Gilby and Terry raised money with their Damn Fine spaghetti dinner, and by and large, people were just straight up generous. Rich and Jenn sponsored several holes as well as throwing another hundred on top, Gilby threw in $50, Trevor who couldn't even finish the tournament threw in $60, the Bucket Design guys refused to be paid for their contributions, and many people just handed me extra bills and told me to "keep the change." All in all, just a tremendous amount of support from people who love something special. When people talk about loving the grassroots nature of disc golf, THIS is the kind of stuff they're talking about.

Thank you Aaron, Mark and Dawn, and the rest of the cottage crew for helping me out all through the weekend. Thank you Andrew for yet another awesome edition of Throwbot--that was a perfect little layout that made for some great viewing from up top, and those trophies were just too damn cool. Thank you Bucket Designs for a great job on the patches and donating a huge pile of sweet t-shirts (extra patches are available for purchase at the Inn now, if anyone is interested.) Thank you Scruffy for stepping up and donating trophies on super short notice, that was a great surprise to arrive to. And a huge amount of thanks to Adam, Sara, and Ol' Bob for putting in all the hard work to get the course ready for the weekend, it looked beautiful! And of course, an inestimable amount of thanks to Sunrise, Jessica and Ol' Bob who have provided and maintained such a pastoral sanctuary for all of us disc golf heathens.

Thanks to everyone's contributions, we should be seeing at least one new basket, and some pretty new tee signs in the near future, to make the Mud just that much better.

Thank you all!

I have your ace pot and placing scrip right here next to the computer. The scrip can get you something from the candy store at the inn.

Just wanted to say what a great time I had over the weekend. Now Sara and I know what it feels like to "just play" a tourney at mud.

Huge heartfelt thanks to everyone who participated and helped raise that much $$$ for the course. Tee signs have been needed for years and the new basket should be there in a few weeks.

Extra special thanks for the man with the plan. Thanks Tim, without you this wouldn't have happened. You just earned yourself nothing but good karma tree love every time you're out there. Also like to thank everyone who helped Tim run the tourney and Thor for being the unoficial drunken photographer for the event and partying as hard as anyone! Andrew, the throwbot was soooo fun! Loved it, thanks.

Also, huge props go out to team Oly and Chris in particular. You guys are freakin' unbelievable and as generous as anyone I've met. The red sauce was off the hook (thanks Heath for the shrooms). Also, Jeremy for being a badass doubles partner and Uncle Terry for just being himself and a Mud man from day one of that course. I love your style guys, you do it up right!

Also big thanks to those who made the killer Mud patches. Very cool guys! i know I've missed a few so Thanks to those i've forgotten to mention

Lastly I'd like to say how happy I am for the way Colin represented for the Mud locals. Duecing #10 and getting #16 for his first ace all in one round. Just the tip of the iceberg for him! Nice shooting loocid.

Good times, good people. Everyone I met was awsome and into it. This whole thing has revitalized Sara and I to the point where we are already making plans for next year and the Return of the Burn.

You guys rock!
Adam
