Here is the official post yo!
Thomas and I will be hosting a Chainbangerz Invitational tournament on Sunday, June 27th.
What: PDGA C-Tier "Charity Endowment" for the Chainbangerz club
Where: AM round of 18 @ Silver Lake
PM round of 18 @ Arlington (with 1 temp hole)
When: Check in at Silver Lake by 9:30am, we should be up and starting golf by 10 at the latest :)
Cost: $4.00!!! (yes, 4 bucks for a PDGA event w/ratings :trophy:)
Who: Event is restricted to 36 players maximum. Only Chainbangerz club members will be able to register during the early registration period until Friday, June 18th.
THEN, on Friday starting at 5pm, I will start taking registrations from those who plan to attend a workparty @ Arlington on Sunday, June 20th. This will all be done on a first-come first serve basis - I will note on Friday how many Chainbangerz members have signed up and how many spots are left for the workparty so you know if you should show up on Sunday (everyone is welcome to show up anyway :biggrin2:). Also remember that you can add these hours to your running total to get really nice discounts at the Chainbangerz shop.
To sign up: Just email or PM me your Chainbangerz number starting at 5pm tomorrow.
Huh? As with many of our recent events, this is a day to have fun playing golf without breaking the bank, get a rating, help out the course/club at the same time, and "represent all that is good and fun about disc golf to the best of our abilities"!

FAQ:
1. Will I win vast quantities of green paper or new frisbees for winning this event?
No, in fact winning this event will only earn you the respect and admiration of your peers, nothing more. We will some few side games set up at Arlington after the tournament for you to win prizes sponsored by our boys at Chainbangerz disc golf shop.
2. Can I get a refund?
Yes, refunds for Chainbangerz members will be given out until Saturday, June 19th as we will have to fill the remaining spots at the workparty the following day. Please remember that $4 doesn't even get you 2 coffees at Starbucks :jumpspin: Refunds for those who show up to the work party (both early registrants & late, members & nonmembers) will be given in full at any time - you put in work, you've earned it.
3. Since we aren't playing for the big bucks, can I (take mulligans/step past my mini/kick my bag in uncontrolled rage)?
PDGA rules my friend, you do the crime, you do the time.
If you have any other questions, I can drop them right in here!

The main work that needs to be done at the work party at Arlington:
Barking: The main trails and tee pads, this is the biggest need and will take the most time
Litter: There are garbage cans on many holes now but still litter might be an issue
Hole 17(18): There is a downed tree wedged into another across the fairway; chainsaw anyone?
Fairways: There are small sticks in the fairways that could be cleared
Field holes: Probably need to be weed wacked, though Jub might do this
Remember NO unauthorized maintenance please. I look forward to the tournament and work party, see you all then! :)

I have a good chain saw and I can remove the tree on hole 18 if the city is cool with me doing that. Sometimes the city parks frown on people using the saws in their parks for liability reasons.
I will have to join Chainbangerz to ensure I get into this.
Though this is not a big payout event, I look forward to collecting big payouts in sidebets against John Stengele and Thomas. Please bring cash!

Forget about the tree on 18 and weed wacking as the city will not allow for this. There still will be enough work for everyone, don't worry! :)

Don Anderson (drkstr) can't make it Sunday due to Father's Day and other obligations but will be out today or tomorrow to do some barking on his own; he also attended the Silver Lake work party and will be playing the tournament as well. Don does a lot for the local courses and is a nice guy so I thought I would say a special thank you to Don. :)

Yeah, I understand it is a tough day to get off and totally my fault due to limited time before I'm vacationing. Anyone who wants to do some sort of course project can definitely do so (make sure it is approved by the relevant course manager!) and get entry into the tourney.

"I would say a special thank you to Don." ~
Thank yee kindly Thomas. I did make it out this afternoon and got bark in the tees of 18, 17, 16, 15, 14, 12, 11, 10, 9 and 8 ~ wasn't sure what the plan is for #13. I also did some branch, limbs and sticks duty on the fairway for #17. Beautiful day out there this afternoon. After barking I played 8 through 18 ~ 2 Birdies and 2 Bogies.
The course is looking good ~ folks are using the new trash cans ~ I didn't see any litter to pick up on the holes I worked on besides a few bottle caps and cancer butts.
Looking forward to this event. Thank you Chainbangerz, Andrew and Thomas.

Work party @ Twin Rivers (Arlington) is tomorrow @ 10am - recent reports are that the course is already in good/great shape! I'm sure there is still a bunch we can do though, if you have them, wheelbarrows, rakes, shovels, and trash cans will be good.
The plan is to bark some fairways and tees, clean up sticks and debris in the fairways, and maybe chop a few thorny things... :)

Work party went well even in the rain and muck! We barked a whole bunch of teepads and made the walk to and down the fairway on hole 16 look really nice.
The usual suspects were all there along with a couple of players added to the entry, thanks to Kelly, Tom, Sheila, Janice, Bill, Cindi, Wayne, Jesse, April, and myself. We notched a 3 way round of triples afterwards through the rain...good times :)

Just be sure to let me know beforehand that you will be attending.

Andrew, Thomas,
My trip to beautiful Guangzhou, China just got delayed a few weeks. Can I still get in?
Qualifications:
1. Supported the Silver Lake course installation work party! Bonus points because I had to work with John Stengele most of the day.
2. Did not make the Arlington work party last Sunday, but last year I bought, 4 truckloads of gravel and spread them on the tee boxes. The course flooded a few weeks later so most of my gravel is now somewhere near Silvana.
3. I pick up garbage during almost all rounds at all courses.
4. I will be able to make change for a Fifty after I collect my winnings from Stengele, Ken Smith, Steve Horton, and Jesse.
Thanks for your consideration,
Brian

I was out at Silver Lake this morning and found a sign saying that the 2nd hole would be closed for a week. I talked with one of the parks and rec guys (this fellow was in charge of the city workers at the work party)and he said they were going to be pulling out the dock that is in the water just of shore from # 2 basket ~ The folks doing the work would be using most of #2 for their staging area ~ I helped him load up #2 basket in his truck. I told him about the tournament and he said the work should only take a couple of days and that he would for sure have #2 basket back in on Sunday.

Looks like -11 is about scratch at Silver Lake and Arlington with the temp hole plays around 47 for 1000 rated.

Arlington SSA shocked me too. For some reason I feel it should have been different too. Oh well, I could slowly feel myself choking towards the end.
The low SSA at Arlington was the result of a lack of propagators especially on the higher end and some pretty good rounds from 900ish rated players. Not to mention there are a ton of birdie holes on that course if you can make your putts (which I did not ) and not too much trouble as long as you stay out of the OB tall grass on the field holes (which I also did not :(). I think if you had a more average PDGA sized field on that course the SSA might be about a throw and a half higher.
It was definitely alot of fun with the smaller group though especially given the price. A great way to get people out working on there local courses and also to support Keith and Chainbangerz. His generosity is second to none. I'm glad to join the club because I know that money will only be invested into all things positive all around the surrounding Seattle area.
And thanks to Andrew and Thomas too. Always a pleasure

I've been a bit busy but wanted to add a few final thoughts as well. I had a great time of course and really enjoyed playing in such a fun, casual, but at the same time 'official' tournament through PDGA.
It is a really easy model to run with the $4 entry fee and because of the PDGA's charity endowment program, it allows us to charge such a cheap entry AND raise money for the Chainbangers club non-profit which is awesome. In case anyone is interested, here is how it breaks down:
$50 sanctioning fee
$0 course fee (THANKS Jub!)
$4/player entry (at least $4 MUST go to non-profit per PDGA rules)
Thats it, clean and simple!!!
With 23 players, we raised an additional $42 for the club by just playing golf!
I wanted to send some final thanks to Co-TD Thomas and Sheila who helped get everything ready and HUGE thanks to Jub for helping us get this all set up through the parks depts at Arlington and Silver Lake. Without him, this event literally would not be able to happen anywhere in the Seattle area for such a great deal.
Finally, thanks to all the club members and work party volunteers for all your help and being such a fun group to hang out with and play golf with. I definitely look forward to running a few more events like this so players can get some really cheap ratings, continue to play together, and encourage participation in our sport through club support and course improvement!
I'll probably start looking for another tourney like this in early September or so (whenever the calendar agrees) - any ideas for the next venue?

Thanks Andrew. I only wish could have finished at TR. My portly 850 would have helped with the SSA. I too agree this is a good idea getting players to volunteer and then rewarding them for theire efforts and the course looks great.
Can I start the argument about par at Ecxaliber. 11 under is 1000 then par should be 24 (half that score)

Yes, thanks again to Sean The Jubster Hadley for his time and efforts on this. It's a great little course, challenging, but within my arm, and birdies to be had.
For some reason Andrew, I'm thinking White River? Mix it up and go south a little, and perhaps a second round at Riverside? Or minis at Ferguson :p? I also like the post-tourney fun (mini and regular putting). I say more of that ... multiple CTPs, skills, something screwy.

A temp course set up in a city park like Pretzelbowl?
I really like the idea of that. Ever since the first Pretzelbowl (er, I guess technically the second), I've had fantasies of seeing similar events around the area, maybe even as a series. Having them as club events would make them that much cooler, IMO. I always have to wipe some drool from my mouth when I pass the par 3 9 holer at Jackson Park Golf Course.
Not sure you can have a pdga tournament at LS or I would agree.
Believe it or not, the LS baskets are actually PDGA approved. So you could have an event there, but I'm with Jason on that one. I'm OK with playing casual events there, but I wouldn't want a rated round there showing up on my permanent record.
cefire
June 30th, 2010, 10:10 PM
Yup, unless I'm reading it wrong you could even hold a PDGA c-tier anyway at an all object course. I was really suprised when I saw that in the guidelines.
Temp courses would definitely be my preference but they tend to up the costs pretty high and require a bigger number of players. The Pretzelbowl works for this, but a small club tourney like this one would probably end up being too expensive for no payout (~$10 or so).

Good Old Lake Stevens DG Course fightin for respect, we got much love but kinda low on respect. That's okay DG community..."If you're scared...say you're scared!..."
The baskets are pdga approved, yes indeed.
All courses should be blessed to have the baskets we have.
Ratings strategy at LS is easy, you can easily play for par on any hole and take the birdies when they come.
YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE BASKETS!!!

LAKE STEVENS ROCKS!!!

I won't lie, no, I can't handle the baskets. I can play for par, but then watch my disc sail through and not hit anything for bogie, then doink off a cross bar for double, then be blocked by a web of chains for triple....
Temp courses would definitely be my preference but they tend to up the costs pretty high and require a bigger number of players. The Pretzelbowl works for this, but a small club tourney like this one would probably end up being too expensive for no payout (~$10 or so).
Maybe it's just me, but $10 doesn't sound bad at all.

I think we should look into Flowing Lake Golf Course just east of Snohomish. This is an incredibly beautiful piece of property that is perfect for a DG course. Rolling hills, just enough trees, hazards, and an incredible 180 degree view of the Cascades. It sucks as a ball golf course and doesn't get much action. The property owners put the course in themselves and it shows. The people that run the course have actually contacted a couple of people and were interested in having a disc golf tournament out there, so we may already be halfway there.
...and who stirred up the Lake Stevens bog that got Cajun all wound up? Who didn't see that coming?
P.S. Jason VP, you are playing at Worlds right now! Get off the freaking internet, wake up on time, and represent the town with the course that you hate! We're pulling for you buddy!

Lol Lines at LS .
The baskets make the course. It would be an ace race course without them.

If you don't believe there are legitimate lines at Lake Stevens go play a round or two with Chris Oz or Wayne Whitney.

I have played as many rounds there as Oz and more than wayne whitney lol I am not trying to belittle the course as much as i am just saying that the baskets are what make the course. The layout is great in my opinion very tight and technical. I often suggest it to golfers who are just starting out . All of the baskets are reachable.

Another idea is sedro, you could just bring portables for the weird baskets. I'm sure Q wouldn't mind. Well that is if the grass gets cut up there to.
