View Full Version : Worlds vs. USDGC

I find it a little odd that the disc golf community makes so much fan fair about world championship titles (e.g. 11x World Champ, Ken Climo) when at the same time the USDGC is considered the sport's "premier" event. Whenever someone announces a big name player at a clinic, or skins game, or any other public event, they are bound to announce the number of world titles, if any, the player has before any other accomplishment. This seems to suggest that a world title is the sport's highest achievement. However, the fact that the USDGC was chosen for an unprecedented live action coverage effort, in addition to the fact that it is harder to win (e.g. Climo's 5 victories vs. 12 world titles) seems to suggest the opposite. Also, I just realized that the USDGC has probably not been around as long as the World Championship, but you get my point.
Who can tell me how these two events stack up?

All the good money is at the USDGC, however, the World Title is THE World Title.
While it is true that many consider it harder to win at the US, winning a World Title means that for eight rounds and finals you played better than the 200 + other Open professionals in the field.
The biggest first place price in recent years is the 15K payday from USDGC, a number not even closely breached by the World Championships.
The US is by invite only (and while Worlds is by invite, they tend to accomodate anyone who is willing to travel and play, while that is not true at the US).
Winthrop is considered one of the gnarliest courses in our sport, however, it is a certain type of golf that if one were to be good at, might find the course not all that challenging. Anthon did shoot a -15 in his final round...
I personally beleive the US to be a professional tournament for professional players. I have not been all that impressed with how Worlds has been run, although it is a huge undertaking.
I took 14th at the US, if I were to take 14th at the Worlds, I think I would still be more proud of my finish at the US. I feel like it is the greater of the two events.
Innova doesn't do US Signiture discs, they do Worlds signiture discs...
My thoughts though, what does the typical golfer think, I am curious?

USDGC = You have to qualify for an invite and it's only 4 rounds
Worlds = just about anyone can register and it's twice as many rounds as USDGC and at various courses and is probably harder to practice for since every year is a different location versus USDGC being at the same place.
I hope to attend my first USADGC or AM Worlds in 2011 to get a taste of the top events and hopefully attend USDGC or Pro Worlds when I'm good enough... I know most people would rather Am worlds than USADGC cuz of where USADGC is located and the type of course that it is... Let's see what people say who have actually attended USDGC or Pro Worlds heh...

World's are played on multiple venue's. USDGC is played on one. Logistically it's MUCH easier to do a live feed from one venue than multiples.

Just the title alone - It's the WORLD championships.
This carries over to other sports that are the core of American sports: Baseball, football, and basketball. Win the superbowl and you are "world champs", even though you didn't play anyone outside the US. Same with basketball. What is baseball's championship called? The World Series.
The concept of being a "world champion" is deeply ingrained in each of us.

Don't baseball and basketball have Canadian teams. (Although I don’t they have ever won a championship in either sport)

Worlds is older and is run by the PDGA
USDGC is new and is run by INNOVA EAST
I've played both... USDGC is the coolest / biggest / best payout, but it is played on the same course and it is a course that rewards a unique kind of golf. At worlds you play more rounds on a bigger variety of holes / courses. I would say that the US is a bigger and more competitive field, but worlds is a more open and community oriented event, especially when it is a Pro / Am worlds... Both are huge and both are cool, just different

Toronto has both a baseball and basketball franchise. Neither competes for a championship.
