View Full Version : Seattle Duel Nature - July 24th & 25th

OK, it's taken a while, but it's finally happening. Event #4 of the Washington State Series: The 2010 Seattle Duel Nature, taking place July 24th & 25th at Lakewood and SeaTac DGCs.
A couple basics of the tournament: Pool A (all Open divisions and MA1) will play SeaTac-Lakewood-SeaTac, Pool B (all other divisions) will play Lakewood-SeaTac-Lakewood. A final nine for the top four finishers (plus any ties) will be held at Lakewood, and will be a safari layout.
We know that this is a tournament people have wanted for a long time, but we will need your help to make this tournament what it should be, especially regarding SeaTac. As many of you know, SeaTac can become a beast in the summertime and we'll need to tame that beast with weed whackers and loppers. Work parties will be announced as the event draws closer.
Keep in mind that this could also be the last that we'll get to see Lakewood as we know it (last I heard, the TAF project was due to start in the fall). So be sure to get your entry in early, this event will fill!

With three weeks to go I'm glad to report that registrations have been coming in steadily. Take a look at the Current Registration List (http://www.pdga.com/tournament-results?TournID=10644) to see who's playing. As a TD one of my favorite days leading up to the tournament is the day the custom stamped discs are delivered to my front porch! Innova is a great supporter of pdga events and we've got lots of discs available for sale before the event. Champ Katanas, champ leopards, champ makos & champ glo gazelles! Echo star wraiths, star valks, glo San Marino Rocs, glo champ cobras, various aviars and more! Get in touch with Tim or me if you want to buy some cool plastic and support the tourney. I'm also getting a bunch of full color custom stamped discraft Buzzzes early next week.
If you want to get signed up for the 2010 Duel Nature head over to Lakewooddiscgolf.com (http://www.lakewooddiscgolf.com/LKWD/Home.html) where you'll find a link to the online registration and a printable entry form. Sponsorship opportunities can also be found on the entry form.

Am I to assume that the pins will be in long position or will it be mixed during the tournament at Lakewood?
Tim
July 3rd, 2010, 09:00 PM
Yeah, I can say that they'll at least be in the long position. They may move between rounds, but that'll be dependent on if we have assistance or not (moving baskets can be time consuming when scores need to be counted and sorted.)
As Eric mentioned above, the discs are in and I've got a nice little assortment with me. Some very nice selections to be had, the echo star wraiths and champ leos (some of which are very starry) look cool, and I'm diggin' on the glow gazelles and SM rocs. If anyone's interested in checking them out, just drop me a line.

How much are they? Will any of them be in our players pack like last year? Any way to take a pic to show the stamp for this year? Thanks for getting such a nice selection of discs Tim and Eric. It is always nice to have something to hold on to from such a fun tournament.

There are two different full color Buzzz designs which can be seen on the front page of LAKEWOODDISCGOLF.COM (http://www.lakewooddiscgolf.com/LKWD/Home.html). All Am divisions will get one of those in the player pack. I plan to give all the intermediate players a hotstamped innova disc too, as I have in years past. I don't have a picture of the hotstamp design up yet.

Just a couple weeks until the tournament now, and the courses are looking pretty good for the most part. Lakewood, of course is looking fine as always, and Seatac is still holding up well since the last mowing, but there are some spots that are a little rough around the edges. We're doing what we can to get the city to do one more pass before the tournament,, but the rough spots are where their mowers can't go. So this weekend, we're having a work party to try to get the Tac all nice and groomed and weed whacking is the theme for this party. If you have a weed whacker, please come on down and pitch in. With a decent turnout, we could knock it out in a couple hours. Even if you can't make it down, but have a weed whacker you'd lend to the cause, that would help too! The main focus is weed whacking, but also some good old fashioned trash pickup is in order too. We're doing this in cooperation with Chainbangerz, so if you're a member that wants credit towards course maintenance, this is a great time to do it--and hey, who doesn't want the Tac to good anyway?
The work party will take place Saturday, 7/17, meet at 10:00. If you can't make the party, but have equipment you'd be willing to let us borrow, please contact Keith at Chainbangerz, Eric, or myself.

Things are starting to really ramp up for the upcoming tourney. I just took the 100th registration, someone from California! Not as big a presence from Oregon as I might have expected at this point... no worries, just wondering if there's other stuff going on down there that I don't know about. Thanks to everyone out there that pregegisters, you make a TDs life a lot less stressful!
I spent a day this week at a friends pottery studio making ceramic plaques for the trophies. I think they'll look cool hanging on the wall and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they don't explode in the kiln and that I've got all the divisions covered. I've gotten a good response on the tourney fundraiser discs too and a bunch have sold which is great for the event. Lots of great molds and pretty colors to choose from! Chainbangerz is selling some of the Duel Nature discs too, swing by and Keith or Adam will be happy to hook you up.
I'm looking forward to getting out on Saturday to the BYO Weedwacker party at the Tac. Thanks for the offer Oly, maybe there's an weedwackerless olympia player itching to come up to help out and will give you a shout. I'll bring my weed wrench out too and maybe stop by Lakewood for a little Scotch broom attack.
See y'all out at the course soon, EE

I have noticed only 28 total Open players (so far) It seems like an awful lot of work (to offer a multi course event ) and Is it really worth it to for such a miniscule turnout. If the numbers stay where they are ( or even double) the A pool will play in less than 3 hrs while the B pool will take nearly 4.5 hrs. This discrepancy alone makes for a logistical nightmare

well the A pool is Open and Advanced players if i read it right. so those two divisions make up a sizable chunk of the registered players right there, plus you have to factor in that the A pool is playing a MUCH more difficult course for 2 out of the three rounds, so that will slow play a little.
In my opinion offering a two course tournament is always worth it, even if you dont have huge pro numbers. being able to play Lakewood and Seatac in the same tournament is like a dream come true!!!!
Jub, please look at the glass being half full instead of half empty.

My point is if the total number of players does not reach the threshold to rationalize NEEDING two courses why bother with all the extra effort.
Thanks for also stating that the tac is as you put it (Bold & Underlined) That there is a huge difference between these courses and as a player I would rather play the harder course all three rounds no matter what division I played.
Jub, please look at the glass being half full instead of half empty.
If I saw it as half full and it was not how disappointed should I be. If I am half empty guy and it turns out to be better then I thought I can "just be pleasantly surprised."

Hi Celeste, yes, you're correct in the order that you'll be playing the courses. We don't have a set time on when round 2 starts, it's dependent on when everyone finishes up, and we want to be sure everyone has a chance to take a load off and get something to eat. Realistically, I'd say a 1:30 or 2ish start time will be likely, but we'll be sure to let people know as the cards are coming in.

TC for Lakewood will be by Hole 14 (the playground area), park in the lower parking lot.
TC for Seatac will be by Hole 8. Parking closer to the intersection of 136th and Des Moines will give you the shortest walk.

Tim and I spent some time at Lakewood walking, talking and throwing to put together a safari final 9 for the Duel Nature tourney. The final nine is going to be for the top 4 players (+ ties) in the Open Division and is going to played for score and final place in the standings. I put together a PREVIEW (http://lakewooddiscgolf.com/LKWD/Safari_Final_9.html) at lakewooddiscgolf.com (http://lakewooddiscgolf.com/LKWD/Home.html) for the players and spectators. We're hoping it turns out to be a fun and challenging nine holes for some of the NW's best players as well as an exciting spectacle for the gallery.
Thanks Andrew, Sheila and ChUcK for your input on the safari layout!

The flyer says:
All Pros + Adv Men play seatac/lkwd/seatac
All other Adv. + Int. + Juniors play lkwd/seatac/lkwd
Therefore, Advanced (Men) Masters would play: lkwd/seatac/lkwd, correct? I ask, because it is a bit ambiguous...
If so, another way to phrase it would be:
All Pro Divisions and MA1 play seatac/lkwd/seatac
All other divisions play lkwd/seatac/lkwd
Please confirm, as I will be driving from Portland Saturday morning, and I won't have time to go to the wrong course first...

Question: Will pins at Lakewood be in tourney positions this Friday? Will pins at Lakewood move on Saturday (e.g.: Will both pools play the same layout on Saturday)?
Thanks!
Tim
July 21st, 2010, 11:09 AM
I believe all the pins are in the long position right now, and I think they should stay that way through Friday. On Saturday, they'll be shortened for the first round for B pool, but will be lengthened when the A pool plays.
Also, I've been asked if there will be a doubles event on Friday. We're not planning on running one, but if anyone would like to step up and run one, by all means, feel free to do so.

Will there be added holes at Lakewood?
Tim
July 21st, 2010, 12:26 PM
There will be one added hole at Lakewood to help out with the flow. The tee isn't marked yet, but it will be behind the new #13 (anti-Geezer), a fairly straightforward tunnel shot shooting down towards the lake.

Is it the same hole from last year? The one that throws on to the beach?

No, it's not the beach hole. It's going to be more of a tunnel shot from further up the hill. Hopefully it will help a bit with the continuity now that the walk to #14 is a bit longer.

I am looking at scores and I am confused. If 54 is par at both courses the Open leader is -5 103 not -8
Did pools not switch courses between rd's ?
or
Did par go up at the Tac?
If so, Why?*
It's not like any of the TD's were consulted when the course was designed with 54 being par! And most certainly it's way out of line for ANY TD to change par at an established course just for their event.
*If so then par at Lamewood should drop to 49!!!!!!
Toby Puttzinski
July 25th, 2010, 11:36 AM
'Lamewood'? How would you like it if someone called you LJ 'Scrubner'? :nono:
Anyhow, the amazing powers of deductive reasoning tell me that there are 19 holes being played at Lakewood for the tourney, making it par 57...
Took a minute and went back a few pages to confirm my suspicion that there was an extra hole... refer to posts #49 and #50. Which TD was being way out of line?

Mike "The Kid" Cain took home the win. It came down to the last hole of the final nine, but a bad tee shot caused Aaron Holley to go OB in the drink.
Bill Clark took home the advanced men in a playoff with Jon Wills. Nice shooting Bill, that even at the Tac was great!

A great weekend!!!
I have to say that Sea Tac is looking the BEST IT HAS EVER LOOKED since i have been playing up there. all of the fairways are mowed and tons of the rough weedeated away! that didnt stop me from throwing into the trees but it was nice to not have "peace" signs be the only moved area on hole 18. everything was mowed and nicely trimmed.
great job Eric, Tim and all who volunteered, and i have to say that the final nine was the best i have seen! great movement within those 4 guys during the final nine. it was close all the way to the end. i love to see those guys throwing those huge rollers and airing out their drives!
You guys have definately set a new standard for tournament play and course conditions out at Sea Tac that will be very hard to beat.

We were fortunate that the Seatac parks department came through for us on Friday and got some much needed mowing done. Weed eaters are fantastic for going around trees but there's nothing like a tractor mower to make short work of the expansive fairways. I'm sure the efforts that went into getting things in shape for the duel nature will continue and that this years Jet Wash Open (http://store.northwestsignup.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1&products_id=15) will be spectacular as well!

The name of the tournament really seemed to come into play this weekend, as there were a lot of close head to head battles going on in all the divisions. Bill Clark and Jon Wills going into a playoff for the Advanced title, Jessie and Tuffi finishing each round within a stroke of each other, Paul having Jeff hot on his heels all weekend in Advanced Masters, Chuck M. having to fend off Tom in Grandmasters, and of course, the final 9 competitors did not fail to impress. Bjorn and Big Mike had a great showdown for 3rd, and Aaron put on an AWESOME charge to make up 3 strokes on Mike, managing to tie it up after 5 holes. Responding well to the pressure, Mike was able to come out the victor, but it was a great show to the very end.
I really want to thank all the people that helped us out throughout the weekend, you guys were invaluable. As mentioned big thanks to Chuck, Kurt, and Gordy, and also Aaron "The Hornet Assassin" Thor. Also, all the people that helped out in prepping the courses: Keith and the Chainbangers crew, Tuffi, Andrew and Sheila, Thomas, Guy, Jub, and I'm sure I'm forgetting some others.
Thanks to Roger Chouinard and the Seatac parks department for doing the great mow job as well. I actually didn't even get a chance to see the whole course on Saturday, but I heard nothing but positive comments on it. And yeah, as great as the course looked, it should be even better for Jet Wash now that the rainy season is behind us and I'm sure Guy and his crew are going to be out there doing more work as well.
BA: Dangit, I was gonna say the same thing about you. Duel Nature, if I'm not mistaken, was the largest tournament to ever take place in Seattle. The fact that another tournament 50 miles away, on the same day, was able to set a new record for attendance is just cool as hell. It looks like the area disc golf scene is really coming into it's own. I definitely hope to avoid scheduling overlaps in the future, as I want to make up and play the Aquafest myself!
Jub: Just how do you type with your foot in your mouth? (Gah! Mental image go away!) Nonetheless, thanks for your help.
And of course, thanks to all the players that came out were a part of history in the making. Eric and I worked hard to make this a reality, but literally, without you guys, it wouldn't have happened.

That was a alot of fun. Everything seem to run smoothly and the final 9 was a good show. Thanks Eric and Tim and everyone else that made this thing happen. Thanks to all the fun golfers out there. The good atmosphere makes up for my lousy golf game.
Do I get the Debacle Trophy? Can anyone beat a triple penalty on hole 9 at Lakewood? Stupid baseball field.
Disc Golf is blowing up! It was very cool to hear that both this tournament and Aquafest had record numbers. I guess I better sign up for Jet Wash early!

A great weekend indeed. Many thanks to all involved for their numerous efforts. Now I just need to figure out if the tourney logo discs belong on the wall or in the bag???

It took me a day or two to decompress from the tourney... but I finally got some of my PICTURES (http://www.flickr.com/photos/edgepix/sets/72157624474828533/detail/) edited and up on the flickr page. Enjoy!

Nice pics as always, Eric.
I've been doing some decompressing too, the past couple days, and today was the first I've looked in my trunk since the tourney. I have somebody's Huk Stool. It, of course, looks like so many other Huk Stools, but if you can tell me some of the stickers on there, I'll get it back to you.
