View Full Version : Recent defacements at High Bridge Disc Golf Course

Played High Bridge recently and unfortunately saw more SDGA benches and course features defaced with paint markings of "Norte 214" and other such gang-related graffiti.
My friend said she played Sunday and watched a group (including 3 young dark-haired males dressed in matching red shorts) deface the tee marker rock for hole 4 in this very same manner. A confrontation between groups almost took place which may not have been pleasant or safe for the people involved.
This is saddening, we ran all the deviants and addicts out of High Bridge Park and soon will have them out of Peoples Park. Now our beautiful course is supposedly the property of some adolescent gang of red spray painters? Ahhhhhhh! Did I miss something?
Are the SDGA and the Parks Department aware of this and are there any plans in the works to address this situation?
As always, thanks to SDGA and the fantastic effort they put in to promote the sport and maintain our awesome local courses.

What time where they down there?
What age group are we talking about?
Also were they throwing? I ask only because there was talk of the same graffiti over at Downriver.
We probably need to start covering or removing the graffiti.
As for the group we could either find a legal way to handle this, or...
We could start to photo or film them defacing the course. If they drive to the course we could turn a license plate into the police.
Either way they should not feel welcome at either course.

They were there about 11AM and appeared to all be in their twenties. Yes, they were playing the course.

Awesome that is all we need is gang banging throwers with no respect for the course. Gotta love it.

These individuals have become very active in tagging all over town. I think we still have an SPD oficer that is assigned to Gangs. I know they like to get reports on activity. Please be careful approaching these people. They are not inclined to see the evil of their ways through rational discussion. :chinscratch:

I have reported this activity to the police. I also covered their markings on basket #13 at Highbridge. I think it looks a lot better. I plan to 'erase' their markings on the benches as well. I will need some help to do this. Any volunteers?

When were you thinking?
How many volunteers were you hoping to get for this project?

I would need to have someone (or a few people) that can sand this stuff off the benches. I can help a little bit with sanding but I have to be careful due to some injuries that I have.
I would like to do it in the evening or early morning. Let me know if you know of a way that we can use electric sanders or battery operated ones (if they exist)
I also heard that the Sharpie marker will actually come off of the Polycarbonite material (plastic) that covers the tee signs at Downriver. I hope so.

Ignorant statement. This is what you get when you don't have enough people who truly care, not what you get for living in a particular location. I would be willing to bet that there is tagging on the west side of the state, if not more.

Good news on the Downriver signs!
I spoke with Kevin yesterday and he mentioned that he had sanded some of the HighBridge benches sometime ago. I am pretty sure he said he had some stain as well. I will try and reach him today to see if he has what we need to get started sanding the benches... early morning is probably going to work better for me.

I spoke with our wood shop foreman, and he doesn't think that they make battery powered sanders. That said; I believe that I can borrow some belt sanders from them that would take off the graffitti in less than five minutes a bench. We would have to figure out how to power them though. A generator in the back of a truck would do nicely if anyone has one. I can get all kinds of things like paint, tools, or lumber wholsale through my employer if needed. I'll chip in for some paint or stain if we still need some. My dad and I will join the work crew if our schedules allow.

Depending on the draw on the sanders in question they may be able to run on a power inverter from a car? They are also a bit cheaper than a gen.

Sky Pilot, I am trying to figure out where to come up with a portable generator we can borrow for Tuesday. No luck yet. Do you think we ought to close this thread focused on the problem and open a new one announcing the planned cleanup and include the need for a generator in the title?
Note: This is my first post and I have come to realize that whatever issues raised here are quickly thrown into SDGA's lap for explanation or fixing. I don't want to complicate matters through ineffective use of this board. Let me know the best way to proceed. Thanks.

I agree that fixing the tee box before LCO is a greater priority. Perhaps by then we'll have figured out how to power a sander once we get to the benches.
Thanks for being willing to help.

I can't get a generator, and I don't know about borrowing work tools during business hours. I'm down for doing whatever I can to get rid of that trash though. Do we have any other options for power/tools?
Also, I saw some paint at Sherwin Williams that is supposedly stain (including sharpies) resistant. How does everyone feel about simply painting over the graffiti? I doubt it's cheap, but it would take a lot of labor out of the equation.

If you're talking about Everclean paint from Sherwin-Williams it won't let you wash off Sharpie. Being a painter it's one of the things I checked when the paint was first introduced.
I think that it would be much easier for us to just stain over the marks with a solid color oil base stain. No sanding required, no generator, cost - a $3 throw away brush. Then when they tag the bench again we just touch up the stain.
If we put latex paint on the benches and tee signs instead of oil base stain we will be creating a maintainance issue that will not go away until all the paint peels off.
I will talk to SW and see if I can get some stain at a discount.

Sounds easier than sanding. And easy to update it should they mark it up again.

I get a discount at SW through work. It depends on the cost of the product, but it was about $7 a gallon when I picked up some interior paint. I have some rollers that we could use; would they work well with stain (low knap pads)? Also, could we get a stain that is so dark brown that sharpie wouldn't even show up? If no one can even see the writing, then that might take away any motivation to tag up the benches.

I can do early weekends and afternoons during the week. It would take calling in sick to come out on a weekday morning. I'm not entirely opposed to the idea, but I'd rather see if we can work something else out first.

So I picked up the stain and I have a few rollers, a few brushes, and a few speed pads. I've also got a truck for the weekend, so I can bring the RR ties down. If we can't work out something mutually agreeable for our schedules, is there somewhere I can leave the lumber? I can stain a bench more or less unsupervised, but I don't know a thing about building tee pads.

I painted all the benches today, but not any of the planks (like the one on 18) or the signs. Once I realized that the course layout had changed, I had to kind of jam through it so I could play the different placements before the tournament. I plan on staining the signage and giving the benches another coat, but I doubt I will be able to do it before this weekend. There is enough left to do at least the signs, but probably not the posts.

Sean,
I was down there today and saw that you had painted them. They looked better and it appeared that the graffiti was nicely covered. Good job!
I recently re-finished the sign frames at Downriver they don't need to be painted.
Gordy has built 18 new frames and posts for Highbridge. They would need to have some stain or sealer on them unless he's done this himself. Check with Gordy about this.
Thanks for your hard work.

Okay, I just played Highbridge this morning and guess who's back to their old tricks?
You guessed it: Norte. Before I go on, let me vent some unbridled emoticon vehemence:
:angry::mad::headbang::evilgrin::headbang::mad::an gry::evilgrin::angry::shooting:
Now, Let's take a broader perspective on this current 'Norte' problem by thinking about who 'Norte' is... more than likely, Norte is just some ignorant punk who feels the need to inflate his fragile ego by wielding his blatant disregard for other people's efforts at community-building by pissing all over their hard work like a dog with a can of red spray paint. The reality is that 'Norte' is just that: an ignorant punk. He wont last. Chances are he'll soon wind up in jail, or worse, and the 'Norte ' tagging will mysteriously stop. If someone happens to see him in the act (again) and lucks out enough to actually get the cops to nail him for vandalism, all that will happen is a court appearance and a fine and then old 'Norte' will be back with a vengence. So, painting over is the best method, and the quicker the better.
Hey Bob, what product are you using? I swear I've got some Behr oil-based one-coat opaque deck stain that is that exact same color(if not damn close). I'm gonna keep a can in the back of the car and just go over 'Norte's' piss whenever I find it.

I would love to sit in the bushes with a ghillie suit and a paintball gun and "tag" them back, but unfortunately it is usually several punks, not just one. I've also noticed an older guy with them as well, so it's not just a young kid. You can recognize these assholes by their very fasionable all red clown suits and generally shitty attitude. I also find it hilarious that they find the need to "rep" at a disc golf course. I guess gang members aren't as hardcore as they used to be, and back alleys are too scary. Douches.

I was down there when this happened. We walked up to hole 2 and saw them walking from 3 back over to 17. When we got up to the benches I looked down and saw the painting and said aloud.. "I wonder what idiots wrote this crap? Don't they realize that this just makes them look stupid and causes everybody to loose respect for them?" I poured water on it and tried scrubbing it but it barely did anything.. When we got out of earshot Kevin called the police and made a report. They left after hole 18, there was 5 of them on team red and white and there was 6 of us but everbody with me wasn't comfortable at all with me when I was speaking (very loudly, they were 50ft from me) Hopefully they got the message.. We have to do what Kevin has been doing down at People's Fix their crap right away until they realize that there energy is being wasted.. WE MUST OUTLAST THEM.. We will as we have been here and are staying.

Did you check with Gordy about the sign posts that he's made? These will need to have a coat or 2 of something on them prior to being installed - due to the fact that they are new. I put a walnut stain on the tee signs at Downriver and sealed it with a coat of Bahr sealer and finisher. I think they look pretty good and will better withstand the weather. I'd like to see something like that on the new signs as well. Wobbley Bob is a painter as well as Rob and Kevin Sakus.
Let's get this done this summer. There's no reason why we can't. I'll help as much as I can to coordinate the meeting of the folks that can accomplish this.
