The WDGC is again hosting our annual winter tournament at Adair County Park. Saturday January 24th is the day, the flyer can be found and printed on the calendar. The field is limited to 88 players on a 22 hole layout. Pre registration only. Titledisc is supposed to activate online registration today, but is not active yet. You can always snail mail your entry to Greg. If you are on the fence waiting to see what the weather will be like that Saturday you will have waited too long to get a spot in the tournament.
Rumor has it that KC has drawn some wind into this year's tournament stamp. He's the club artist and Festivus weather wizard for those not in the know.

Yes I would like to see a registration list as well. I have not received any kind of confirmation, and it would be nice to know if I made it in. Apparently it was pretty full when I went to register on the web site.

Thanks David,

Sorry folks I have been too busy and don't regularly check forums. I'm surprised I even remembered my password. Per David's first message, you snooze you lose. It was a mis-communication between me and Josh at titledisc. I thought I had given him the green light but many messages from him went to my Spam folder in Yahoo. I did not realize he was waiting for me to review it. Anyway I never care whether people send me checks or use titledisc, just want to give people options.

AM Players pack discs will be Custom Stamped Champion Boss, Monarch, Wraith, and Starfires.

Everyone will get a microfiber towel again this year which may cause the rain to stay away.

I am completely grateful for all you do in putting these events together so please don't take this as any form of dissatisfaction.

Would you mind providing an explanation as to why a particular division would not receive a trophy in a non-pdga event? I am just uncertain as to why it would make sense to exclude a non cash division from receiving a trophy. Didn't that division go out and bust their butts for 44 holes to try and win just like everyone else?

Again, not being critical, just not very certain of the logic behind not offering the trophy to MA3 and FW3. My guess is it is because of the lower entry fee? That would make sense.

Thanks,

Fair question

1) Recreational is the Division by name it implies that people that sign up for the division are more casual golfers that are playing at least as much for fun as for serious competition.

2) I have ordered a limited amount of trophies so the number awarded per divsion will vary based on the size of the division with just 1st place for smaller divisions. I decided to spend much more on nicer functional trophies this year, but there will be a few less to hand out.

3) Maybe those inclined to sand bag by playing Rec while destroying at least 1/2 the Intermediate field will be provoked into moving up. Every event that I have seen a Rec division the person who wins clearly should have been playing Intermediate at least with the guys.

Since I made the Recreational Entry Fee the same as Intermediate this year, that is not a reason but could be a factor in different circumstances. I made them the same mostly to ensure there was still something left for scrip to play for after deducting players pack costs.

Happy Festivus,

Greg

P.S. It is full and the wait list is growing by the hour.

As a Rec player, or MA3 as PDGA officially calls it, I have to disagree with 2 of your statements.

1) Recreational is the Division by name it implies that people that sign up for the division are more casual golfers that are playing at least as much for fun as for serious competition.

In the 3 events that I have played Rec, I mean MA3 in, they were they most fun tournament rounds I have ever played in. But, saying that Rec players are playing for fun as much as competition is wrong. Yeah, the rounds tend to be more casual an fun without the stress of trying to win the upper divisions. Competition? yes we do try to compete as hard as anybody in any other division. We are just competing against players more at our skill level, or in the case of PDGA events, we are playing the proper division that our player ratings put us in. The old Rec divison from a few years back, was normally trophy only, or sometimes even no trophy, just glory. It was the division for people who played like crap, were new, or just wanted to play in a tourney and wasnt really trying to win anything. That is not the case now. MA3 is a legitimate division, just lower rated players and its not even the lowest division one could play in.

3) Maybe those inclined to sand bag by playing Rec while destroying at least 1/2 the Intermediate field will be provoked into moving up. Every event that I have seen a Rec division the person who wins clearly should have been playing Intermediate at least with the guys.

MA3 is for any player rated under 900. if someone is rated 899 and their only competition is a player rate 720 or so, it isnt really sandbagging, and is completely acceptable to be playing in that division. In my 3 MA3 tourneys, two of them were won by someone who clearly dominated in the end scores. If they had played in INT, they would have finished mid pack. Not a bad result, but it obviously would have taken away their chance to actually have a tourney victory. By the way, those 2 guys were both playing in their first PDGA tourney, and had no rating, so they were in the correct division. The 3rd person to win in my MA3 playing was me. If you know me, you would know I am far from sandbagging by winning that event. I won by 7 strokes I believe, which was nice, but it was also a bit of luck, since I was 799 rated at the time, not a high rating.

I know this event isnt PDGA, so their official rules dont apply here. And I also know that in this case, the TD made this ruling, and anyone still playing in MA3, or FW3 for that matter, either moves up, or lives with the TD's ruling.

Thanks Justin, I already knew that, hahaha

But still, us lower rate players eserve respect too. whether its a PDGA event or not. I am just glad that we had 4 fun players who decided to do MA3 for WOX.
We made our own division know and raised a lot of stink about it. I plan to play 4-5 ORS events this year, and i will proudly enter as MA3 everytime!!!! I just hope we have enough participants to be able to get a series winner this year

No, you're just waaaayyy too sensitive. If you want a better chance at trophies, you'll need a bigger division. As to how to convince more people to play MA3 I have no idea. Seems like a tough call for a hard working TD - should they offer a trophy for a four person division and decimate any possibility of payout? Should 25% of a division get a trophy? Look at FPO - think Toni will be getting a trophy?

1) Recreational is the Division by name it implies that people that sign up for the division are more casual golfers that are playing at least as much for fun as for serious competition.

At first glance, yes. But by PDGA standards, "Recreational" simply is the name of the division for people with ratings between 850 and 900. It has nothing to do with the seriousness of the competitors.

3) Maybe those inclined to sand bag by playing Rec while destroying at least 1/2 the Intermediate field will be provoked into moving up. Every event that I have seen a Rec division the person who wins clearly should have been playing Intermediate at least with the guys.

When has this happened? Please provide your source. I assume you're going back in history a ways, because from what I recall:

2009 WOX: 1st Place MA3 would have tied for 23rd out of 41 in MA2
2009 Slosh #1: 1st place MA3 would have finished 9th out of 14th in MA2
2009 Slosh #2: 1st place MA3 would have finished 11th of 15th.

Hardly what I would call destroying half of the intermeditate field.

In fact, I will continue to argue that most of the <900 rated players in MA2 should be playing in MA3. That will give us two very balanced and competitive divisions. MA3 is as competitive as every other division. Not as skilled obviously, but it is in the lower divisions where skills and competition are learned.

Since I made the Recreational Entry Fee the same as Intermediate this year, that is not a reason but could be a factor in different circumstances. I made them the same mostly to ensure there was still something left for scrip to play for after deducting players pack costs.

If that's your viewpoint, not having trophies for MA3 makes less sense. If the group is for newer and more casual players they should be playing for a trophy, not scrip.

I think the main problem is that so many people get hung up on the term Recreational, which is about the dumbest thing the PDGA could have named the division. Since Festivus is not a PDGA event, you certainly can have other criteria for who should be in a division. But if that is the case, it should be noted up front.

Happy Festivus,

And to you!

Holy shit you Rec players can be bitches!

Greg made the comment "at least with the guys" as a means to distinguish between the MA3 division and the FW3 division.

Greg has run this tourney for years now, and I think it's cool that your MA3 division is available, but it seems like you all have some perceived slight every time it is offered.

You know, if you all were playing in the Int division, there would be trophies for 1st through 3rd, and the payout would be deeper. want payout or trophies?

whatever....

Mostly we're looking for competition. If the MA3 eligible players played MA2, they would typically be out of the running for trophies by about the fourth or fifth hole.

Just you Troy.

Hi all thanks for the feedback... my old school thinking in terms of Rec applies more to MA4 which almost no one uses.

With the Guys or Men, I see a dominant win in MA3 pretty common and not so much with the Women. My comment on that front was misinterpretted.

Anyway I will see what I can do to provide a trophy for 1st in the MA3/FW3 divisions, thanks for the feedback and opinions.

I get called a Sandbagger at every event for not playing Pro Master, but my rating and frequency of play really don't warrant it. The cool thing about our sport is at any given event players can hit their groove and play lights out in comparison to their average. If you are playing in the right division that should give you a chance at a win or at least a high finish in larger divisions.

To save time and give a more equal chance of winning the mostly Innova schwag they send with my custom disc order, I will have a random draw for prizes, rather than allocating stuff to CTP's on every hole which extra take time and effort.

Festivus 2009 is in the books. in a word, AWESOME! The weather was amazing, the TD's had everything dialed, the competition was drunkenly, fadedly, fierce and the course redesign made you work for it.
Can't wait until next year!
Thanks to all volunteers, TD, Sponsors, and players.

Peace out,

Peace out,

I totally agree with the above. I had a great time at my first Festivus. We had a great bunch of itermediate golfers Kim, Laura, and Amber. My arm is pretty sore though this morning from 44 holes of golf, which is the most I have ever played in one day. Totally worth it though. :yay:

Thanks Dave, good reporting. Great weather from Mother Nature, great eats from WDGC, and great beer from Calapooia. Awesome mugs and cups for trophies hand made by Rebel golfer John Kinder. An extra of those also went to Tami Allen along with the $100 Ace Pot rounded up with a little double Ace Pot $. The only really bummer on the day was the dog bite breaking up a dog fight, which just shouldn't happen.

I picked up the temporary mats this morning as a few not too tired players made it out for cold and a little wet round of doubles.

Kelly's tournament logo predicting the weather was only off by a day. There was a strong cold (36 degrees) wind blowing at Adair Sunday after some morning rain. Not the brutal Festivus wind of two years ago  but still one that would have wreaked havoc on pretty much all the temporary holes and 5 and 18 and 11 and ... You get the picture. :chug:
Congratulations to James and all the winners, he is the new keeper of the Festivus Pole. :jumpspin:

Anyone know how Tami is doing after getting bit trying to separate the dog fight? I saw her hand right after, and it did not look good.

There were a lot of dogs there. Seems like most of them were under control though, but some were not. I know a couple of them came up on our intermediate women's group, and started to bark aggressively until they were called back. Was a bit of a tense moment though because we were not sure what they were going to do, so we all just kinda stood there.

I golf with my Chocolate lab quite often by myself, and encountering unrestrained aggressive dogs is one thing that worries me. I carry pepper spray with me when I am by myself because I worry I would not be able to separate an aggressive dog if it attacked my dog.

I hope Tami is ok, and it was an awesome ace. Our group was behind her group, so we defiantly herd the celebrating.

Cindy :)

Ace? I thought that it was a 5pp from tee to chains?

Kelly did awesome work on the stamp. I saw it and cried a little... again.

That is correct, however with no true ace coupled with the dog bite the players and Greg agreed to give it to Tami.

Kelly did awesome work on the stamp. I saw it and cried a little... again.

If anyone hasn't noticed look closely at the stamp, it is hole 5 on the berm.

Yeah, yeah... I noticed that. That's why I cried a little.

I heard about the ace pot and think that the players and Greg decided rightly.

I also got ace money without getting an ace on that hole. April Fools dubs a couple years ago. It's an island hole tradition. At least Tami's went in! Way to go Tami:yay:
