Yes, I will open registration on the Stumptown site if it does not fill at the BSF.

If you are unable to make it to the BSF, I am going to allow people to sign up for ONE of their friends, but no more. I want to avoid having one person bring down registrations for 25 friends.

Why just at Pier this year?

Because Trojan is too close to Washington, and you know how we feel about those Washington people.

Ok, not really. There were a couple of contributing factors to that decision.

1) The Rose City Open is an official Rose Festival event, so we thought it would be nice to have the whole event in "Rose City".

2) It takes a lot more manpower and logistics to run an event at two courses. Its even more complicated when the courses are over an hour apart.

3) I'm running the Oregon Disc Golf Championships out at Trojan in September, so if people want to play an awesome tourney at Trojan, they should try to qualify for that event.

Hey Jeff, you going with innova or discraft?

Trozzle!!!
April 15th, 2010, 06:54 PM
I love the idea of the Rose City Open being held at just Pier, in The Rose City, and especially if it is now an official part of the Rose Festival. Adding Trojan was a great idea to add to the toughness of the tourney, but if it is a Rose Festival event now, a very good choice was made

Just posted the EPIC BATTLE for the Men's Advanced Amateur Sudden Death between Patrick Buckley and Torrey Tuft.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SXcOL19U5hg

Coming out on top of a sudden death to win your division, is one of those rare moments every golfer dreams about. This clip didn't fit on the RCO DVD and I finally got around to getting it online for everyone to see. It's an oldie but a goodie. I have more coming so subscribe to my YouTube channel to be automatically notified!

This is a great way to get pumped up about the RCO and the summer golf season.

My goal is to have all holes in the long positions.

Out of curiosity, is there a specific reason why, I thought the Saturday Sunday split a few years back was a very fun idea, it creates 36 uique shots rather than just 18. I know there are no longer divisions like MA2 or MA3, but for what it's worth I thought it was a fun way to set up Pier.

on the stumptown store it says : "Players that have pre-registered can pay for their registration here once accepted.
Do not sign up on this form if you have not received an e-mail from the tournament director advising you that there is a spot available for you to play"

Craig,

We're very close to full right now, but I need people to use that form so I can pull people into the tourney appropriately. With two pools of players I have to ensure the pools balance out properly.

Bottom line: fill out the form. I'll send a link for players who make it in to actually pay up once I balance out the pools.

What do you expect when you don't offer any other AM divisions? Now someone can explain to me the incentive to move up to Pro and lose when you can kick arse on giant Adv AM fields like this one and be rolling in scrip?

Hell only 16 players registered have a rating that even forces them to play MA1! So you get players in that division with ratings of 803 and 788!

AMs shouldn't play for massive prizes, divvy up those AMs into smaller divisions based on ratings and encourage a faster progression through the ranks. But when the winner of a massive field like this gets way more than he ever could playing Pro, what is the incentive to move up?:pirate:

Did you happen to notice that the highest rated player in the MA1 field is rated 954? That sure looks to me like an appropriate field to me. Sure, many lower rated players decided they wanted to play enough that they were willing to step up for this event. However, if I had allowed people to sign up for MA2 there would probably be more people "sandbagging" in THAT division than there are in the current MA1 field.

You make it sound like every event is MA1 only, but they're not. There are plenty of events going on these days that provide for all of those other divisions.

Just because you're mad at Sam, Gawain and The People's Champion for not moving up and out of Advanced Masters, don't take it out on me.

Haggerty!

This was not to be construed as a complaint against you personally and for that I sincerely apologize. You know that I always got your back. You Da Man!:trophy:

How can there be bagging in MA2? There is a rating ceiling that will automatically kick you up into MA1 when your rating gets too high. In fact, if a tourney would restrict the AM divisions to players who actually qualify to play in each division you could make playing MA1 a privilege instead of a macho "I'm good enough to play in THIS division" thing.:pirate:

I don't think it's as "automatic" as you claim. I think it is up to the TDs to enforce. I have seen a few events this year where an player with a rating of over 935 has signed up for MM1, even though they are registered with the PDGA as a Pro, and have accepted cash prizes for playing Pro in the PDGA in the past. (Granted, I have not seen any of these players accept any trophies or prizes for their MM1 play in said events, but the guidelines (http://www.pdga.com/files/documents/PlayerDivisionGrid_0.pdf)imply that they should not be allowed to play MM1, unless and until a) their rating drops below 935, or b) they successfully petition the PDGA to move back to Amateur.)

I think it is up to the TD to enforce. Once the tournament has started, it would seem to me to be too late to change anyone's division....

Welcome to Oregon!

Pier Park is in NW Portland, a quick google maps serach will yeild you the directions you so desire. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=s&utm_campaign=en&utm_source=en-ha-na-us-bk-gm&utm_medium=ha&utm_term=google%20maps

If you have been following this thread, then you realize this event is full. But its not too late to help out or come enjoy the golf anyways. Oregon golf fills up quick these days, this site is a good place to check regularly for updates regarding tournaments.

If we want to make the incentive to move to Pro more tangible then offer a players pack that consumes the amateur entry fee. Offer trophies only and everyone gets paid by simply signing up.

However I don't think there is any bagging going on in MA1, sure there are some rated higher but they are in the right division and probably would be a non factor in the MPO division. I think it is more of the point Jordan is making in that less skilled players are playing up out of choice in the MA1 field. If they are willing to forfeit their prizes to higher skilled players just to play in the event who can blame them. Hell I am one of them and on any given day or days I can play some great golf. Its just that on average I am a 932 rated player!

DexterHawk
June 18th, 2010, 11:04 AM
Most bagging in the MA2 Division is done by newer players with no rating at all. This does not mean they should play MA2 though. Having one MA1 Division seems like a more authentic competition. If there are enough players that want to step up and play in a more competitive it seems reasonable to exclude a lower division to make room for them.

The disincentive about moving up to pro is a real issue. When I was first making the move up two years ago I was leaving a 45-60 person Advanced field that my rating clearly allowed me to play in (I think I was 960 or 970 at the time) and into a top heavy Pro field of usually 12-20 players. I didn't cash in my first 3 pro events and had serious considerations about moving back to advanced. Since then oregon pro fields have grown a lot. Mostly due to the courage and perseverance of a lot of the "cash line" level pros who have stuck it out and built a really great field.

I agree with Mike. I think that the main problem is that is too easy to win great sums of plastic and prizes in Advanced and that this makes it hard to want to risk a higher entry fee in a division with a much more difficult field. I think that big players packs, flat payouts and smaller prize pools (i.e. smaller entry fees and less added cash) would go a long way towards solving the problem. I also think that a bigger deal should be made of players going pro and of accepting their first cash. If we celebrated these people more and rained some of the glory on them we may entice more players to join.

Seriously though, there is no rule forcing anyone to step up... regardless of rating. Plus, he only has one rated tourney, and it takes a lot more than one tourney to find out someone's accurate rating.

You really need to have about 15-20 rounds of rated play to have an accurate rating AND you have to be pretty steady in your skill progression. So if you only have a couple of rounds to determine your rating OR you are improving very fast the PDGA rating won't be very accurate.

But when you've been playing rated dg rounds since '02 with almost always 15+ rated rounds, it can reflect your skill level pretty well.:pirate:

No doubt that the PDGA rating system works the best for the touring pros. With that many rated rounds to go from the ratings work pretty damn well. I am concerned with, and hear more bitching about the ratings system from, those newer players who don't have many rated rounds. It doesn't work as well for them and telling them that you just have to wait until you can get more rated rounds to get a decent rating that reflects their true skill level doesn't fly real well.

But Holey Shite! 119 rated rounds in a 12 month period! I'm not sure that I have 119 rated rounds of golf in 9+ years of rated dg...:pirate:

... i would like to thank ms. coleman for helping pull my shit together on hole 8 as i was doubting my ownself as a golfer... she could have kept quiet and watched me implode, but instead she gave me a strong high five, pulled me in close and whispered, "you are a good golfer. go hit that putt." it meant the world to me.

... and i would like to thank jeff hagerty for all his hard work to make a great tournament that ran so very smoooooothly... and most especially for takin' care of the women folk as should be done... well done, mr. hagerty for doing your part in helping more ladies get involved in this sport!

... and to everyone everyone everyone who said good luck and congratulations and go get em girl to me threwout the weekend!!! amazing amazing amazing!!!

peace and love and flying objects,
emmarose

Just curious: When did the awards ceremony end last night? And did anyone escape the mosquitos?

Also I would like to personally thank all the mosquitoes for sucking all the Pabsts from Saturday night out of me Sunday. It didn't help my awful round.....s, but it was nice to constantly be aware that the vile little devils were a constant...alright cheers all
