unfortunately, tomorrow will bring about my first decrease after 7 straight increase updates. :( It was bound to happen someday, at least I'll get to start the climb again after the ratings for the Trojan slosh come in.

It will be interesting to see what happens to my rating this time around. I'm at 924 and had three rounds at white river averaging 950ish then two rounds at sumner meadows averaging 975ish. Then had a little too much fun at the memorial and played three rounds averaging 880ish.

My prediction after my Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde winter is that I will go up by one point!

Only 2010 events reported to the PDGA by March 12 made it in this ratings update being posted tomorrow.

I wish they were included though, that 1007 round would really help me out!

Well I'm no math major. But I am a DMajor and by my math my next rating will be 924.86274509803921568627450980392 wich I assume gets rounded up. However, I am just guesstimating what the official round ratings will be for my last three events so I could be off a little bit. But I will gladly bet you a disc that my rating goes up no more than one point.

ok i'm disapointed.... i went down? And I see two things that didn't happen that I assumed would happen... CHUCK... read this... first, I thought more rounds would be dropped cuz of the date, but last year's memorial is still on there and that is more than a year from the current update. And, first and 3rd rounds at fountain hills for the memorial have the same ratings? ohhh pluezzeeeeee, no way jose! The first round was at least 4-6 strokes harder than the 3rd round. First round had 30+ mph winds when I was playing holes 5-10, and that is super hard plus it was 15-20 mph steady the whole round when it wasn't 30+. The 3rd round didn't have any wind over 10+ mph. This needs to be fixed for the first round before I can accept my rating going down.

I realized today that I left out my pretzelbowl rounds when I calculated my rating prediction....

But I still won the bet! After having two good tournaments then one average tournament followed by my worst tournament ratings ever.

My rating stayed exactly the same!

I completely agree that fountain hills played much much harder the first day if you had a later tee time. I teed off late and had a steady 30mph wind all round. The third round the wind was hardly a factor. I don't think there is a way to account for the ratings difference in tee times given the current ratings formula so I wouldn't get to worked up over it.

Luck is part of the game and it usually comes back around. Plus that just means you have more room for a bigger increase in the future. It's a lifetime sport. Your not in a hurry to plateau are you?

I answered Snap's Memorial ratings question on PDGA D-Board. The date thing for the same event the following year is something we've discussed because if it always starts on a Saturday then the following year Saturday will always be 364 days later (365 in leap years) and both events would be included if that event was a player's most recent event. In this case, the Memorial started a day in the week earlier this year so the previous Memorial was only 363 days later. Thus, both would be included if this year's Memorial was the most recent a player entered for this ratings update.

So what was the cut off date? I thought it was today, march 23, so all tournaments before march 23, 2009 would be dropped or?? Thanks for answering my questions.
Still think there something off about the memorial calculations but i can discuss that in private with Chuck... where all2common can't get all hard on me again ;)

Chuck Kennedy

The cutoff date is different for each player based on the date of their most recently rated round which is always the first day of the event. Your cut-off date was the first day of the Memorial, March 3. The first day of the Memorial in 2009 was March 5, 363 days ago.

In all reality you should have two checks, one for date and one for same name events to remove from the calculations. Having the same event on you current ratings calculations seems a little tacky. Worlds is never on the same days from year to year. Do you always include the ratings from all worlds events even if they are inside the 364.25 days of the calendar?

That was what I was thinking, I was looking forward to dropping last year's scores and having this year's scores for the memorial on my ratings since last year "sucked" and this year "improved". Last year avg was 902, this year was 927. So technically, I haven't defeated last year cuz it's still bogging me down on my ratings until the next update...

You realize how unreasonable that sounds when you think it through? What's in a name? Why should an event almost a year later with the same name versus another name, even on the same course layouts (which isn't always the case), be treated differently? And yes, there are several times the September ratings update will include ratings from two Worlds depending on their date sequence those past two years, or the October updates may have two USDGCs, etc. The cut-off has to be somewhere and it happens to be 12 months (365/366 days) like the stat cycle in most sports.

Maybe unreasonable if sorting by hand but not if automated, it might take 1 minute or less of processing on a decent server processor. The first check would eliminate 95% of entries if not 98% of entries. Then the same name check would catch the rest.

Are you kidding on the stat cycles? Really that is your reasoning, everyone else does it!

I thought paying customers interests were regarded more, here is a customer stating what he thought would be an obvious check on the data and you are saying tough that is how we are calculating it.

What is your justification for doing it period? It has nothing to do with whether the process could be automated. That's a piece of cake. If the cut-off has been set at 365/366 days, then why does a tournament name being the same a year later mean it should be excluded? They are tournament rounds on course(s) within the time period being included.

I'm with Chuck on this one. If two tournaments by the same name on the same course happen 9 months apart then they should both be on your ratings.

Ratings are only ratings. If you desire better ratings in the future, I would go out to the practice field and work on throwing discs in all sorts of ways. If you check my ratings over my career you notice how a person of somewhat extended age will have some problem improving their rating (regardless of how they are computed). At least I get social security now.......
