View Full Version : XD retooled

I just heard from Brody Miller that the newest shipment of XDs at Disc Golf Depot have been retooled:confused::confused::confused:
I haven't seen them yet, but Brody says they're deeper (more like an aviar). WTF Mate :pullhair: If I wanted an aviar, I'd buy a freaking aviar. :headbang:
I hate innova and discraft doesn't make discs that I like. I may have to switch to the Latitude Spike for a putter. Very XD like.

Another update:
The super small bead that was on the XD is not on the retooled mold. It's beadless and gets pushed around in the wind a lot.

Interesting...dunno what Innova's thinking with that. You might check out the Ringer though if you like the shallow putters. It's more stable than an XD, I think, but I doubt Discraft would switch up the mold like that.

I have a Ringer, but it is more over-stable than I would like. I think the Wizard would the first putter on my list if I need to change my bag.

The ringer is super flat and has no glide or float to it. And it's too overstable. And it's the devil
Anyway, the wizard is good, but still pretty stable (as in too stable for a putter). I've only putted with one and I've heard that different runs have different stabilities. So I may have to check it out.
Pizzel - have you played around with the Spike? Still a bit too stable but it feels a lot like an XD. I don't grip the stupid gripy patch on top.
I'm really tempted to drive across town to DGD to see these things. I'm nervous. :pullhair::waaah:

Interesting. I've only thrown a Ringer a couple times, but I would think a Wizard would be at least as over-stable. I'd think that a Magic would be closest to an XD, but I'm no expert.
EDIT: Just saw Sean's post after I posted mine. Sean, if you're open to tossing Gateway stuff, give the Voodoo or Magic a try (Warlock is also an option, but I found them to be pretty similar to Wizards). I've been a fan of Wizards for a few years now, and in my experience, you'll be hard pressed to get 2 that feel alike, but they all fly pretty much the same (at least in the baseline "S" plastic).

March 19th, 2010, 02:26 PM
I have a Ringer, a few Wizards and two Focus's. If the Wizard is the putter you'd use to replace the XD you should really try a Focus. Very much like the Wizard with the rim depth of a Challenger. Good driving putter. Good approach and super dependable within 30.
Ringer is still my goto though for 150 to 30. Especially in the wind.

typical innovaland thinking; too bad guys, hardest disc to replace when I dumped innovaland. Not that Big D hasn't made a few blunders, but retooling one of the greatest discs ever...hurt them where they'll feel it, quarterly profit statements.

Ya, I feel like it's flight path is the closest to an XD than any other putter. Just a tad more turn at the end.
Oh, you have to get the "star" type plastic one, not the "DX" type plastic. I think you'll dig it if you were to stray away from the XD.

Ok so maybe it was a bad analogy. What I am saying is that things change and we need to get used to it. If the change doesn’t work for you, move on to something that does. In the business I work in, the only thing constant is change. I am not saying what is happening to this putter is good or bad. However, whining about it here won't fix it.

It seems there is a missing bead, however small the older ones were, on the new ones.
We have gone back to the original XD without the bead, just as we did with the Aviar P&A. The old part was worn out and the small bead really didn't do anything.

Dave's response to flash on the PDGA forum worries me. When he says "part" is he referring to the mold? When a part part wears out does that mean we will never see that disc again? Is there no way to reproduce the part?

He's most likely referring to the mold. It is possible to replicate a plastic injection mold but it's extremely difficult to get everything exactly the same. The San Marino Roc is a good example. The mold broke, Innova had a new one made, the new san marino's are more stable than the old ones.

the obvious difference in the new mold is the dome on it. all of the xds at NA are the new mold except 1 157g. where did all the old mold go? just all of the sudden everyone is all out of them all at the same time? no one had back stock?

Lat 64 Spikes are very XD-like in shape and flight with way more glide and in Zero plasic- hella sticky. They feel rigid in you hand but will fall dead after hitting something and won't slide like the XDs (I threw XDs for years but the hard plastic didn't work for my putting style and when I missed, sometimes I could still see the basket for my come-back putt).

Yup, approaches. I've started using a Ringer when I'm afraid the Four Times will go too long (which is its only problem). I really have to be careful on downhill approaches with it. I can't throw anything very far uphill. I usually go with my FLX Surge for going up.
It was great luck to be given that disc. I really have to guard against Darr stealing it when he comes around. Four Times JK Pro Aviar-Xs make him crazy.

DO NOT fall in love with 4X JKs. They are hard to find and cost a pretty penny. I have a small stack of them and that is the only reason they are still in the bag. Besides, JKs are substantially more stable than an XD. It would be much cheaper to track down a stack of XDs the 4X JKs.
Any chance you want to get rid of yours Bob?

Ringer would be a great substitute for the XD. It fits right in between the Classic Roc and the XD in terms of stability and size of bead. It has a much shallower rim and overall doesn't fly as far, but is stable and low profile, which is what attracted me to the Classic Roc a few years ago.

I am a solid month into this sport and currently throwing an Aviar, but interested in the XD's slimmer profile.

The Aero is a straight flying large diameter disc that has wicked glide (glide factor 6 on the Innova scale). I use mine for longer putts 20 to 50 feet. It also makes a great utility disc, which is what I used mine for before I found the Coyote. As I said before in this thread, putters are like underwear and everyone has their own likes and dislikes. The only way you will find what you like is to try a few and see what you like. The first disc I bought was a 174g yellow Aero with a blue stamp and it’s still in my bag. Granted we’ve had our disagreements at times (why don’t you want to go in your home you stupid disc, don’t you like your home?) but we also had great times like the time she and I sank a 35 footer for par. Her name is Gertrude.

I carry four different putters: My goto inside 40 feet is the Rattler. I use the Ching JuJu for annie right-around putts. For longer putts where it is necessary to power up a bit, or where I need a left-around, it's the JK Pro 4x Aviar-X. I've recently added the Ringer in an effort to deal with wind (when I don't just throw a driver at the chains). None of them are worth a crap if I don't practice (a lot).
Personally, I never liked the XD. It didn't seem suited to my spin-putting style. So much fade makes it hard to judge a nice dead fall into the chains/basket. With the understable Rattler, I'll still give it some annie spin and get a nice nearly straight 'S' line to the chains, arriving there just as the fade is going to crash it anyway, keeping my misses close in.

its not so much the new disc that annoys me but that innova has no allegence to their throwers in not even trying to replicate the old mold and no warnings on the change, like no one would notice.
Yeah, it would be much better if they just discontinued their good discs with a cult following like Discraft does.

You got one with this stamp? http://people.msoe.edu/~cohenm/c3a.jpg
Nice. That would be a sweet stamp- maybe with ANHYSER underneath?

One of those stamps went off at auction three years ago for a mere $825,000.

Referring to the MRV no? That was a dumb move. Especially since finding them is hard. And convincing the people you found with them to get rid of them is even harder.
Back to the XD. My buddy Jeff read this and did two things. Laughed cause he bought a stack of them along time ago from his dad. He then cried because he's sold half of his stack.

Referring to the MRV as well as the MRX, Hawk (Discraft's top pro uses it), Xtreme, X-Clone, X2, Talon, Swirl APX... I'm sure there's more.

Well, I know that Jack at Rapid Fire has in his discontinued box some MRX's and X-Clones and X-2's along with Rockets. And I'm pretty sure that in the regular case is like 4 or 5 Talons. Also at least two Slipstreams.
Also isn't the Swirl APX what the Wizard became? I remember reading that somewhere but I can't remember where.
A disc that I wish Innova would change or cancel instead of messing with the XD....the frickin Birdie. Man that's a brick of a disc.
Btw, I'm talking to my buddy Jeff about letting me snag ten of the old XD's from him. This way I can horde them over peoples heads and then make them disgusted by saying I'll never even throw them.

Most retailers probably still have the old mold XD, as well.

Not even close. The Swirl APX is slightly understable and fairly shallow. Also, last time I checked, Jack had a couple of them in stock. Of course, I haven't checked in a couple years :D
If anything, the Wizard is closest to a big bead Aviar with a rounded lower wing and a thinner flightplate.

I wouldn't get too far ahead of yourself; I've heard people say the new mold flies incredibly close to the old mold.
Of course, even if they flew and felt exactly the same, there would be people who swear that the old mold flies way better.

This may be a little off topic, but is there a reason that the XD is classified as a putter rather than a mid range? Is it just a marketing technique by innova? I know classifications are arbitrary and don't really matter, I'm just curious. It feels and flies like a midrange for me.
That being said, I just switched to it for my putter and so far am loving it.

The Xd was a classified as a driver when originally release. I've see 300+ ft. throws with them. A little slower than the Katana though. :whistler:
CHAMPION XDs seen in the wild!!! First run (that I am aware of) ever in champ plastic. Check the ebay watch thread for links. I'm bidding on the two auctions but I bet they will go for over 35-40 bucks. Too rich for my blood.

hmmmm probably gonna be just like what happened to the classic rocs that they did when innova "changed/broke" that mold, if compared to the orig. version the new champion versions are overstable monsters.

It's a very versatile disc. I use it as a putter, upshot, midrange, and sometimes driver.
A lot of NW disc golfers use it as a putter.

i went to disc golf depot today and threw my old xds along side the new ones out back 10 or so throws with each. the new ones have more glide and don't feel as understable. nailed my old molds each round. new molds, not so much.

You were comparing used discs with new discs, or did you have brand new old mold XDs also?

Kinda on subject, I just got a star xd with some scrip, anyone know how it compares to a DX XD. Is it any good?

The star XD is a completely different beast. I'm not an XD thrower, but the few Stars I've seen are super overstable, like a Whippet

my XD is the oldest I have seen around. Thanks to Stu Hicks for trading a few years back. It is my only putter I ever use. If I ever lose this thing I will have to quit playing. it is money!!!

I've got a champ XD that I won as a second chance offer on ebay. (Second chance offers are auctions where the winner does not work out-no payment, abducted by aliens, etc. and the second highest bidder gets the chance to buy the disc). My bid was 27 bucks plus shipping for at total of $32.95.
Here is the disc (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330418051732&ssPageName=ADME:X:SCO:US:1123#ht_618wt_1165)
Anyone want it? I'm short on funds so I am going to pass. The offer expires at this evening so let me know. I should be able to ship the disc right to your house. Anyone interested?
Cheers, Bro
