View Full Version : Juel Park Wednesday Ace Pot
The Ombudsman
March 10th, 2010, 12:31 PM
Daylight Savings Time is here this weekend - Time for Ace Pots to commence!
I would like to invite everyone to the first Weekly of the season, the Juel Park Ace Pot. Wednesdays beginning at 5PM sharp. Sign ups are at 4:45. The parking lot has been expanded, so there will be no reason for the neighbors to \
complain. This year, we will have a rolling Ace Pot. Entry is $7.00/player with $1.00 going to the Ace Pot and $1.00 going to the fund to build and maintain the course at Tall Chief.

Juel doubles use to be awesome when there were alot of people showing up a few years ago. I would recommend know one park on the road at all if the parking lot is full. There is parking at the PCC on Avondale that is about a 5 minute walk away. Those neighbors will complain about anything they can and we should remember how quickly the weekly league doubles was dismantled after a few complaints. Also try not to have any beverages or other extra curriculars within sight of the road, nongolfers, houses, or parking lot. The local police do a regular drive in to the parking lot and I wouldn't expect to many of the local nongolfers to be ok with any of that stuff either.
So is the Tall Chief Golf Course willing to have baskets put in?
Is it all the land that used to be the back sloped nine?
The Ombudsman
March 10th, 2010, 03:45 PM
Tall Chief is not adverse to baskets being put in. Tee pads are another issue, as the land is on a one year lease. Juel style tee pads are about as good as we will do there, if all goes well.

Does this start today? Or next Wednesday?
Say, when is the LAST event (for calendar purposes) please?

Awesome Mike, this is great news. I think rubber mats are the best route for new courses anyway, for the first year at least until the design is finalized. You can stake them down with rebar and remove if/when the time comes. Because there are likely few vandals out there, they'll probably hold up good too.
When we start getting conclusive go/no go about Tall Chief, I'd be all for raising some $$$ for baskets.

Who's gonna run the doubles this year? My brothers and I ran most of last year but I'm not sure I'll have that night off this season, we'll see. I'll play when summer comes the course is miserable and not worth it right now imo. The new layout was planned during the "dry" season and is a swamp in many places.

Next week after the time changes
I am going to run the doubles and hold the $$ for the next few months, until I head to the east Coast to move my fiancee out here in June. I played Juel yesterday and it is not too bad - definitely far from miserable. many of the large bog areas have dried out considerably, but you still want to wear your mud shoes.
As far as I know, we have the go-ahead from Tall Chief. Jub and Erick will be out there this week working out a plan to get a real course up and running.
Gawain, we played last year until the end of October...

Atta Boy Ombudsman, way to take charge.. Dunno if work will permit me to play, but glad to know Wednesday's at Juel are back.. I know last year was different. However what made it worthwile were the PEOPLE who came to play. Not WHO was running it, frankly it could have been anyone with a deck of cards.. They same guys just showed up with the cards. And I Thank ALL the Clark boys for that.. This isn't an attack, but a perspective how things really seem from a players POV. Furthermore, this also will help benefit another course relatively close by, by letting personal issues get invovled it is really a negetive double whammy to our sport and to our locals who try to get more land for this game WE ALL LOVE.

Why wouldn't it work out with Michael running it? That seems like a slam at him. I don't think he'll have any problems, I don't get out there a ton but I might play a Wednesday one of these upcoming weeks, I'm looking forward to playing the new layout for the first time.

Merely an observation not a personal attack. Mike and I are close friends, one of the first I met in the disc golf community in fact. I spoke with him personally and he knows where my concern lies. My issue is more with the organization than the person in "charge". Last year nobody was willing to step up so it fell in our lap. I tried to implement new ideas (ace pot, running scores for playoffs, and handicaps among others) and was shot down repeatedly. It seemed everyone wanted to get things done but nobody pushed to make it happen. He has my support I'm just curious what approach he'll use that didn't work for others.

Yeah it got rather frustrating and as for it being anyone with a deck of cards that's crap. Without direction they'd be sitting on the table and people would be wandering around aimlessly. I'm all for anybody willing to better the Juel situation and if it helps get Tall Chief going even more so. I say anybody who wants input let's meet up and throw some ideas together, it will give us a better chance of success.

-I'm not sure what exactly you're implying here, that we as a group of disc golfers are incompetent or just lazy. But I strongly believe somebody would've done something about it If you hadn't. But that's speculation.. So call it whatever you want..As for it falling in your lap.. that's crap, you wanted it to happen, so you made it happen.. congrats, but don't give us the "it's such a burden" angle.. Bill, you are a good friend and I know you aren't a bad guy at all, and I do see where you are coming from.. I do apprieciate the fact you stepped up. Thank you. It was a lot of fun.. Not sure what it was exactly, but a few years back Juel Dubs was probably the most fun weekly event that I can remember... perhaps it was the anticipation built up from the hour drive through rush hour traffic, then showing up with just minutes to spare, finally able to get out of my car!!... jog around a few holes and take a few warm-up pufts.. giddy as hell!!:biggrin2:
Then the Clark brothers started running it, so I boycotted it (they were using marked cards I heard)!!:nono:
Actually, my softball team switched to Wednesday nights, so I was unable to play most of the time. We're back to the Thursday night league, so I will definitely show up more this year...
Oh, and the course changes get my stamp of approval:wink2:... if only more courses would 'reverse direction' and become more dog-leggity-right.
<shouldn't this be under 'weekly events'?>

I actually think there were people that believed the cards were marked or rigged in some way shape or form. The simple truth is, I was the only one that had a deck of cards with me. There was a stretch where Kenny and I were paired up 3 weeks in a row. I can understand that looking a bit fishy. I even had someone else draw my card for me one of those weeks! I too am looking forward to playing Juel again. I've only played 2 rounds on the new layout.

March 12th, 2010, 05:08 PM
There was a bit of disconcertion aboout the Clarks getting teamed up all of the time, but if you look at the laws of averages and the low turnouts, the chances were that at least two of the Clarks would be paired up (and win) on most any given week. One of my goals here is to make this event much more popular. Let's get some PLAYERS out there and make this competitive!
I have been talking with a potential sponsor and am trying to get a big prize together for any team that scores a minus 19...
sillybizz
March 12th, 2010, 05:24 PM
Ever since I took over Terrace doubles, the last 5-6 months, Wayne and I have never been paired up together, not even in the same group. Week after week where the number of players dwindled down to less than 7 or 8 we still couldn't even get in the same group, yet my dad and I last year during Lake Stevens doubles were paired as partners at least 5 times when the number of people who showed up were 20-30. It happens, it doesn't mean the cards are marked, I can't say for sure at Juel but weird pairings just happen that way.

Toby Puttzinski
March 14th, 2010, 03:17 AM
It was a joke about the cards being marked... hadn't heard about any card controversy... purely coincidental, but conveniently convoluted.
Josh H. and I shot a -16 once, and we missed 35 and 20 foot putts to begin and end our round... of course we hit some sick putts in between though...
LJ Jubner
March 14th, 2010, 10:41 AM
Maybe their needs to be two pools experienced and not. first the experienced all draw cards return them, reshuffle. then not so draw from the same cards. That way no experienced can be grouped together
Toby Puttzinski
March 15th, 2010, 01:09 AM
The problem is getting an equal amount of players in each pool, and it would probably be difficult to avoid controversy and delays in determing which pool certain players belong in...

Random draw is random draw. The idea here is to get a lot of people out to play. Hopefully by having a larger parking lot and a runnung ace pot we can accomplish this.
The more people we get out there, the more random it will be.

Thank you for asking, Snooksie!
We had 17 throwers show up yesterday. Because Tall Chief is dead in the water, I made some executive decisions regarding the entry fees and Ace Pot. I decided to roll the $10 I had collected for the Tall Chief fund into the other $10 of the Ace Pot. I decided to still charge $7.00 for with $5 going to payout, $1 going to the Ace Pot and then bring back the old Juel Doubles tradition of having two CTP and/or long putt holes.
So......
Winning score with -13 was shot Kenny Clark and newbie Jeremy. They split $50.00
at -12 was KBK and Wes, pocketing $25.00
Billy Clark and Kevin C took 3rd and split $10.00
Some people bitched about a 3rd place payout. Deal with it.
Juel always attracts plenty of Newbies. I like to see them be encouraged to come out.
Speaking of Newbies, Reluctant Cali Josh won $8.50 for his long putt on hole 6
Kevin Christian sweated as he watched Kenny Clark come within one inch of his CTP shot on the 374' hole 14. The tape measure was called in. Kevin had put his forehand 10' 10" from the pin. Kenny's was 10' 11" away. Kevin pocketed $8.50
$37.00 was rolled into next week's Ace Pot. We should have no problem breaking the $50.00 mark.

Juel has always been one of the funnest weekly events!
Yesterday's results:
Seventeen folfers were on hand. We welcomed a couple of first timers to Juel. This matches the season's high for participants.
There were a couple of very close calls on the Ace Pot, as Big Bob, playing as Cali, hit chains not once, but twice! Once on #2 and again on #12. He also made a great run at #5 (both chainouts were on his second drive)
Paul and Kenny were victorious, posting a score of -14. they split $50.00
Dan had Newby on his team and they shot a -12 to take second and shared $25
Third place was a tie between the teams of Biily & Cameron and MBG & Rolly at -9
Billy and Rolly bailed out before the playoff, which was won by Michael, who pocketed $10.00
Bob won the CTP on #1 and pocketted $8.50
The CTP marker on 12 was pulled before the last group actually played the hole.(oops) Michael had the best drive out of the last group - putting the disc about 12' from the basket, but without a marker to compare, we were compelled to do a throw off for the prize. Michael won the throw off and the $8.50 prize,
The Ace Pot rolls over and next week it will be worth $67.00 plus the number of players.

Bob and paul got off to a rather slow start, but after stringing together 7 birdies, they ended up in a first place tie with Wes and Chad at -11. On the first playoff hole, Bob pinned his drive to ensure victory. First place paid $50.00, second paid $25.00. There was also a tie for the $10.00 third place payout that was decided by CTP.
Kenny Clark garnered CTP honors on #8 while Chad C. pinned his drive on the difficult hole 16 to win $8.50 apiece.
Nobody hit the Ace Pot although Brett V. had a chainout on #11.

Great first day of Juel doubles last night, especially with only one day advance notice. Ten people showed up in total. Eight Juel veterans and two newish players. Unfortunately, the two new players flipped themselves as partners but they seemed to have fun.
Kevin "Juel Doubles Ace Master" Christian finessed a white soft magnet 196ft threw the air that nestled gently into the bottom of the chains for an ace on hole nine, winning himself ten whole dollars out of the ace pot, plus some dollar bills from the group and high fives all around.
Miki Fujikawa rode a scooter all the way from Seattle to play, teaming up with "Big Hyzer Bomb" Ryan and together they birdied there last five holes in a row finishing tied for the lead at -11 with myself and thirteen year old Jayden "I park 350 foot holes and can 100 foot jump putts" Johnson. We played the old juel park number two hole for the playoff and after the kid and I narrowly missed our sixty foot birdie putts and Ryan missed his putt, Miki stepped up and drained a 40foot birdie putt for the victory. Well played sir.
Final Scores
Miki & Ryan -11 $30

As intermittent wind gusts blew from all directions, swaying the tall grass across the serene landscape of Juel Park, twelve determined golfers showed up for a competitive round of random doubles.
"Lazer spin putt" Ryan (formerly "Big Hyzer Bomb" Ryan) and Brett "don't call me Vintertarian" Vintertun got off to a smoking hot start, birdieing their first seven holes in a row. They cooled down considerably on the back nine but birdied two of their last three holes for the one shot victory. Kevin "Juel Doubles Ace Master" Christian and Chris "Shoota" Cuicta birdied their last five holes in a row to finish tied for second place with Bob "Glow Plastic Fetishist" Clark and myself. I brought my "C" game at best and was carried by my teammate for most of the round. We had a playoff for the second place cash and Bob and I birdied the second playoff hole to secure a second place finish. Honorable Mention goes to "The Elusive" Captain Jack who showed up for maybe his first time ever at Juel doubles. He teamed up with "Soon To Be Cashing" Carly and together they posted a solid negative round. Woot Woot.
Final Scores
Brett V. & Ryan -11 $34
Bob Clark & DMajor -10 $14
Kevin Christian & Shoota -10
Kenny Clark & Jayden Johnson -9
Brian Clark & John Johnson -6
Carly & Captain Jack -3
Ace Pot is at a whopping $12dollars!!
Shot of the day was two bombs by Bob Clark- Threw a hyzer the whole way on the 420foot hole #6 that nestled directly against the pole on our first hole of the round, the next time around on the 484foot fifteenth hole crushed a boss fifteen past the basket into a strong headwind for an easy duece.

Legal disclaimer > ** This is in no way an organized disc golf competition at Juel Park **
Carlee (this is the correct spelling Dan ) has really nice form and she consistently outdistanced me by a country mile. She will be a solid contender in any tournies she enters in the future.
This was the first time I have played Juel in nearly a year, and yes the Juel swirl was in full effect.
Let me explain the Juel swirl for those who don't know about it.
The tees for each hole all face in different directions, but because of the way the wind funnels through the park, it seems like the wind is ALWAYS in your face, on every tee, regardless of where it was blowing from 5 minutes before.
I missed a couple of gimmee putts yesterday, I think with the same partner we could have easily posted a -6 or -7.
Bob Clark should be outlawed from playing Juel for money, its just not fair.
Shooter should only be allowed to play after his 5th or 6th adult beverage.
It was great fun playing with Brian and listening him bitch about his two brothers. Bob got the huge arm, and Kenny has wicked good putting skills, but poor Brian, when it comes to DG, might have well been adopted.
Well worth the 5 bones, but hey, all I got in my players pack was dull pencil.

Awesome job Dan. Keep it going.. I'm thinking I may make my annual trip to Juel next week... A voyage back to the homeland as it were..Maybe we can organize a skins match at Juel sometime.. any thoughts?
Also, we should change it to Bob " The Dream Crusher" Clark. The man is lethal anywhere at that park.
Oh, and Captain Jack don't forget about brother Bill.. Have you seen his kick putt? Enough said.

Beware the tall silver haired smooth throwing grandmaster toting nothing but a few discs in a Target bag. He just might take a little bit of your money.
Nine players showed up for Juel Doubles last Wednesday night. Including an East coast ringer who had one driver, two rocs, and a putter in a target bag. While warming up he lost his one driver in the tall Juel grass. Knowing that a Juel doubles round without a driver just isn't that much fun I lent him my most comparable disc to the one he lost. He ended up as cali, refused to accept a second borrowed driver, & still managed to tie John "Shiny New Discs" Jonhson and I for second place at -10. We played a playoff hole and then decided to have a ctp for the 2nd place $ which the ringer won by about a foot. The ringer gave only his first name and place of origin, but after some internet detective work I was able to identify him as this guy http://www.pdga.com/player_stats/17277 not too bad a resume.
The winners, however, played much better than the ringer and everyone else. Kevin "Juel Doubles Ace Master" Christian and Bob "Fast Start" Clark birdied there first nine holes in a row and set the new season low score at -13.
Honorable mention goes to "Newly Addicted" Mason who showed up for his first ever doubles round and teamed up with Jayden "I park 350 foot holes and can 100 foot jump putts" Johnson and together they went under par. "Soon To Be Cashing" Carly finally flipped herself a good partner in Brett "I heart Nukes" Vintertun but they finished a few strokes out of the money.
Final Scores
Kevin & Bob -13 $26
"The Ringer" -10 $10
JJ & Dan -10
Carlee & Brett -7
Mason & Jayden -2
No Aces were hit & Bob Clark generously donated $2 dollars into the acepot which now stand at $23
I also heard a rumor that there was a little $ left over from last years ace pot which will hopefully find it's way into the current fund, but will leave out the details until it's a reality.
Shot of the Day- John "Shiny New Discs" Jonhson parking seventeen with a smooth low and tight anny backhand that nestled about 12 feet from the basket. 17 was the only hole that had not been birdied in the first two weeks of doubles. I should mention that Bob & Kevin got 17 as well this week, but JJ's drive was better!!

If you play doubles at your local course, draw a partner that you learned to play with at that course, and have been playing for a number of years you should probably win.
We had a record turnout, for this season, at Juel on Wednesday night. Fourteen players came out to play so we actually drew cards instead of flipping discs for the first time. Some veterans from prior seasons made their first appearance of the summer, including: "Ninja Jump Drive" Wes and his sidekick "Dart Master" Ken who got teamed up together after drawing the two jokers from the deck (haha). "Mazda Forum" Matt and Kevin "Autofruit" Carberry also came out for the first time and drew each other as partners. Shout out to Brian and Luke for coming out for their first time of the season and posting solid negative rounds.
As for the play, Bob "Fast Start, Glow Plastic Fetishist" Clark continued his run of cashing (and donating extra $ to the acepot), teamed up with Jayden "I park 350 foot holes and can 100 foot jump putts" Johnson and together they shot a respectable -10 to get the second place money. Brett "I still heart Nukes" Vintertun and I teamed up for the aforementioned local connection and put up a -12 for first place that should have been atleast a few strokes better as we bogeyed hole 17 and missed two other opportunities in the circle.
Honorable Mention to the The Jokers who missed cashing by a stroke despite having each other as partners.
Final Scores
Brett V. & DMajor -12
Jayden J. & Bob C. -10
Ken & Wes -9
Carlee & Shoota -7
Kevin Christian & New Brian -6
Luke & Tyler -5
Kevin Carberry & Matt -3
No aces hit, Bob donated $3 extra, putting the acepot up to $40
Shot of the day- continuing the trend of of giving it to my partner, Brett "I still heart Nukes" Vintertun canned a sixty foot jump on hole 16 for a much needed duece!

Juel Doubles Tomorrow Night 6pm Sharp
****Now with all you can eat blackberries!*****
Last Week's Results:
The Croatian rolled into the parking lot with plenty of gifts for the common folk, but no discs in hand. Luckily, a boss of his was found earlier in the day by Brian "One Lefty Finger" Clark. He used that one boss combined with a borrowed putter and threw his best shot of the day, before the round even started, by flipping one of the returning champions from the previous week: Brett "I really Heart Nukes" Vintertun. Together they played solid Juel golf, parking many of the shorter holes and hitting some good putts right around the edge of the circle. They finished at -11 taking first place by a stroke. Hot on their heels was Kenny "Compulsive Putt Practicing" Clark and his partner "Mazda Forum" Matt at -10.
Honorable Mention goes to three new players for showing up: Cortlin, Matt Bakke and Art! Additionally, Kevin "Juel Doubles Ace Master" Christian and "Shoota" for their magnetic attraction to each other as partners. They have partnered up together three out of the four weeks possible. & don't forget "Broadway" Bob Clark who showed up before doubles but couldn't stay, as he had to get back out on the track and make some money for daddy.
Final Scores
Mark "Yappin Croat" Yarmek & Brett V. -11 $40
Kenny Clark & Mazda Matt -10 $12
Kevin Christian & Shoota -8
DMajor & Evil DMajor (cali)-8
John Johnson & Art -7
Brian Clark & Cortlin -6
Jayden Johnson & Matt Bakke -3
No Aces were hit so the pot is up to $53
Shot of the day- Up to this point I have given the shot of the day to my partner every week. This week I was cali and so as to not break my tradition I give my second shot self the shot of the day on the 224 foot hole 18: after putting my first drive about 12 feet past the basket I elected to not take a second drive in case I fluffed my putt. Like a self fullfilling prophecy I airballed my short putt about a foot to the left, then miraculously managed to limpwrist my second putt just barely into the left pocket of the basket, where it settled meagerly as possibly the ugliest birdie of my disc golf career. But, hey a two's a two!!

"From their struggles to establish dominance over each other, siblings become tougher and more resilient. From their endless rough-housing with each other, they develop speed and agility. From their verbal sparring they learn the difference between being clever and being hurtful. From the normal irritations of living together, they learn how to assert themselves, defend themselves, compromise. And sometimes, from their envy of each other's special abilities they become inspired to work harder, persist and achieve"
Last's weeks episode of Juel Doubles had the most players of the season and the was also the most exciting to date by far. Two of the three Clark brothers in attendance drew solid partners and both of their teams shredded the previous season record by shooting -15. Kenny "Compulsive Putt Practicing" Clark teamed up with John "Shiny New Discs" Jonhson and they birdied every hole on the course except 5,6 and 15 finishing with 8 birdies in a row. On the other side of the course Bob "Too Cool to Clear My Ace Disc" Clark teamed up with "KBK" Ken and they crushed everything-only parring holes 1, 10, 14, and 15, through 17 holes. On hole 18 Bob finally figured out how to throw a short hole and finessed a blue banger in the air just to the left of the basket and as it started it's slow turn to the right it had dead center chains written all over it. Sure enough, it hit low in the middle of the chains and stuck in for an ace and a tie for the lead at -15 forcing a playoff with brother Kenny. The playoff lasted two holes and ended with Bob sinking a 20 footer for a birdie and the first place prize money for him and his deserving partner.
Honorable mention to Erick "Krunk" for coming to his first doubles and to Frank "Juel Godfather" Lewis for coming out to his first doubles of the year. Last but not least Brian "One Lefty Finger" Clark for owning the bottom of the scoreboard and thus creating a Clark scoring sandwich-thanks!
Final Scores
Ken & Bob -15 $39
JJ & Kenny C. -15 $20
Brett V. Mazda Matt -12 $10
Wess & Kevin C. -11
Frank L. & Cortland -10
Mark Croat Yarmek -9
Jayden J. & DMajor -8
Shoota & New Eric -4
Brian C. & Art -3
Bob's Ace was worth $70 and the pot is currently at $0
Shot of the day-I have to break the trend of giving the shot of the day to my partner. Bob's game tying ace on the last hole was definitely the best shot of the day. However, it should be noted that if you ever play with Bob and he throws an ace you should politely ask him to clear his disc. I made the mistake of letting him keep his disc in the basket while I was teeing off, and I hyzered a soft challenger into the middle strong side of the chains and it bounced out-obviously due to Bob's disc and not the rather light chains at Juel.

Last's Weeks Results:
13 special people showed up for a good old time at Juel last Wednesday and it must have been a strange day because the scores across the board were pretty low. Their was a brother team: Brian "One Lefty Finger" Clark and "Broadway" Bob Clark. There was a Marky Mark team: "New" Mark and "Yappin" Yarmek.
We had a new player: Ryan "Favre" come out and play very well as Cali. He spent most of the round spiralling laserbeam sidearms past the defense and throwing crisp touch passes into the chains and in true "Favre" fashion he brought the game down to the final seconds of the fourth quarter but came up one stroke short on the challenging 17th hole to Kenny "Two wins in a row" Clark and your narrator. Kenny flicked his champion Max about fifteen feet short of the basket for the victory duece on 17.
In the same group "Almost Cashed" Carlee teamed up with Jayden "I park 350 foot holes and can 100 foot jump putts" Johnson and came out on fire. They birdied there first six holes in a row, highlighted by Carlee hitting two 50+ foot putts with a dx shark and Jayden making everything in the circle look easy. Eventually the length of the back nine cooled them off and they settled into a third place finish just out of the money.
Honorable mention to "Big Hyzer Bomb" Ryan Bilocerkowycz for getting back out.
Final Scores
Kenny C. & DMajor -12
Ryan "Favre" -11
Jayden & Carlee -8
John J. & Ryan B. -8

Brett V. & "Mazda" Matt -7
Bob & Brian Clark -7
No Aces were hit so the Ace pot grew to $26 & thanks to Paul "Sherpa Macguyver" for kicking in $40 dollars from the previous season towards this years pot-bumping the Ace pot to $66
Shots of The Day-Hole 17, Kenny's game winning 350 foot low line drive flick that flipped up to flat on a line 20 feet left of the basket and held until skipping chain high about fifteen feet short of the basket and Carlee smashing not one, but two long spin putts into the heart of the chains during the first six holes of play, propelling her team to an early two stroke lead.

Average turnout last week. Eleven people showed up and scores were decent. Had a couple new people, Colin and "Spiritridge" Ron. Jayden Johnson canned some nice long putts and hit metal on everything within 80 feet of the basket. Brett Vintertun put up the best score as Cali so far this year but lost the first place cash in a playoff. We played the traditional old layout #1 tee to old # 3 basket for the playoff hole. Brett threw two drives and missed a 40footer for birdie. Kyle and I only had about a twenty foot birdie putt for the victory.
