Is there any word yet on wether camping will be allowed all week in the group site? I have some new out of town advanced masters women friends who still want to come down for the NT to watch the pros, and stay through the week for the am tournament.

PS can this get sticky?

so now with am's with both west and east courses to themselves, do we play 4 rounds? I'm up for 2 of both! Assuming I beat out 500 others at registration...

Cindy,

You'll have to pay for the group camp through the week. We will only have it reserved for the days needed for the event.

****NOT AN OFFICIAL RESPONSE*****
Sure, but it won't be at the BSF rate as you'd be renting the group camp by yourself.

Jordan has half of it right... Unfortunately, BSF rates currently don't exist. State Parks are enforcing fees...Part of an effort to make up for some of their funds shortage?

If you are not volunteering you will need to pay the camping fees for each night you plan on staying.

That can be done at Tournament Central through Patrick Darr.

I don't have the camping fees just yet, but should be no more than $5/night.

Not true. Assuming = bad.

Last I heard there are 160ish positions. Without adding another day to the event we can't get that many more people through the courses and still have time for the awards ceremony.

160??? Last year there were 311 players for the NT and Ams got 3 rounds and Pros got 2 rounds in on the weekend, for 5 rounds... So I'm sure it's going to be at least 200 or the split weekend concept is void...

How can you get 6 rounds into 2 days? That is the problem I'm seeing. It can't happen and have time for an awards ceremony before 9pm on a Sunday night. They can fit in almost twice as many pros because they play for 3 days.

The problem has been that Am's in the area have traditionally balked at the idea of a three day event and so we did not go that route this year when we requested a split weekend with the PDGA. If we have enough support to allow for it then we can surely do that next year.

4 days = 4 rounds, 400 players and awards by 7 pm
3 days = 4 rounds, 300 players and awards by 4 pm
2 days = 3 rounds, 160 players and awards by 4 pm

I have been trying to figure out how to make 200 work, it would make for a tough day on Saturday to turn the cards and get the next tee times up for the second round. 200 people 100 per course, with 10 minute tee times with only two starting holes at 1 East and 1 West would take 4 hours to start. That means with a 3.5 hour round that last person at the 11:am start time would have to tee off by 4:00 pm which would be impossible to do if we sorted the cards. If we just issued same group tee times for the second round then we could do it but that would suck for the people who are playing at the top of the field not having each other to push on. I am not sure it is a good idea to change the format of the event and not allow sorting of cards between rounds. They did it one year at Worlds and it was not well received. I know I would not like it as a player. So as much as I would like to get more players though the courses in two days it is not feasible without sacrificing the quality of the event.

I would love to play in a field of 300 AM golfers, and a three day sounds great to me. An event of this caliber is worth the extra time and money.

Is this where I sign up for the BSF?

Just an observation, (from a casual observer:cool2:, not a disgruntled #103 on the waiting list) but the decision to go with a 2 day Am event in order to cater to the "ams in the area" seems to contradict the philosophy of making the tourney more "National" friendly... not to mention the effort to get more players in(split).

Splitting the weekends to accomodate more players (or pros?)... +144 pros... +16 ams...

I second the motion that the 2010 BSF should be a 3 day event with 300 players.

But, if you don't want to change the dates again. Just sort the first round cards by player rating and set the field of players at 200. Sure, some players will play better than their rating and some worse, but it should allow the cards to be shuffled before the needed second round tee times for each player. The odds of higher rated player having a really bad round and needing an early tee time in the second round should be really low, since there is no intermediate division.

For 2011, start saying it's going to be 99 percent a 3 day event, got a year to get everyone to be ready for a 3 day event.. Tell them if the memorial and masters cup does it and is successful, why not BSF, but only with a 3 day event, there are 4 rounds instead of 3 so still one up on the other 2 tournaments heh.
and for tee time starts, how about shotgun start at 8am? 5 players on each card at tee times at 1 and 10 at 12 minute intervals? These are all ideas for 2011.
Some tournaments use both tee times and shotgun on different days etc.

As for changing things in 2010; 160 does seem like the ideal number, unless you do 5 per card at 12 minute intervals or shotgun start, then could probably take on 20-30 more people but prob a bad idea just to increase it so little...

Every year is a building block to success...

Even if we took 40 more players there would still be more than a hundred disgruntled players who did not get into the event. So not allowing a player or players to play on the lead card or second card for shooting a hot round above their rating does not seem like a good trade off.

But it does not mean we can not do something with the Awesome Pro's who are volunteering to help that weekend, we could do something on Saturday during lunch while we handle the scorecards or on Sunday after the rounds but before the awards.

How many people would be interested in doing some Professional tutored clinics at Milo McIver?

As someone that is playing along at home, I will try to help you out. As far as sending a PM and not get a response, it appears that every single person that has sent Flash a PM has received a response in a more than reasonable fashion. Here is a link so you don't have to waste your time looking for one. http://www.nwdiscgolfnews.com/forum/private.php?do=newpm&u=219
Seriously. You expect them to type out the entire list for all to see, most of whom probably don't even look at this site, just so you don't have to waste 10 seconds of your evening sending a PM? And on top of that, you call it a "mythical waitlist" and then point out that you never bothered to go through the thread to attempt to look for it?

And yes, they did create more work by allowing for more pros. Lets do the math here. They added an extra weekend to allow for what? Almost twice the pro field and even adding a few more AM's. To me that seems like quite a large accommodation for everybody. Maybe next year a third day will be added to the AM weekend so there will be less complaining on here. Until then, lets stop all the complaining because you didn't happen to get in. Or you can wait to complain that it is a three day event and you can't get the time off work...

Just wanted to clarify that I did not attempt to sign up for the BSF(because of family plans) and am not #103 on the waitlist, or disgruntled/disappointed in any way. I was just making the observation that the split in weekends would take away a bit of the mystique for me, as an AM1... this actually makes my inability to make it this year sting less, knowing the pro players won't be there on that same weekend...

I sent out an email to his email that he provided in the wait list registration but I never heard anything back. This has been a common scenario so I stopped checking in with everyone and gave them their one week window in peace. After the one week window we would send invites to the next group of people on the waitlist. I am sorry if the communication experienced a breakdown, we are not trying to slight anyone, just trying to fill the remaining spots with people who want to pay and play!

Correct. I want the experience and the opportunity to play with the best in the world. I figure it is a $150 fee for lessons and experience. Well worth it in my book.

What about the experience and the opportunity to play with me? Isn't that worth something? $1.50?

What's the total capacity for the pro weekend? I am thinking about signing up for MPO for the same reasons as above and it would work out better for me than the am weekend dates as far as scheduling goes. Plus if the pro side has lots of space still I wouldn't feel bad about taking a spot away from a better player and it would open a spot up for one of the hundreds of ams on the waitlist.

We gave every pro every opportunity to register for the NT, heck we even displaced the Am's to another weekend. If they are too lazy to register or complete registration by now tough, its open to anyone and everyone that is a PDGA member. If you want to play both weekends at this point have at it, you will be as tired as Jeff and I will be when its all over!

Sam has pointed out the fact of the Rules Proficiency test which a huge mess of Oregon Pros have not taken yet, so if you are one of them go take it.

I don't believe that for a minute. I think you could hang in there and grab those key elements of the other FPO's and increase your playing prowess. I know the cost can be high but I don't think the athleticism would be a factor. After all was it not Gary, you and I that put in the trail on hole 2 at Stub Stewart by ourselves!

Which reminds me of a joke:

Affirmative MPO = Pool A & Pool B

I have the starting groups completed and almost ready to post. Of course as soon as I post them 10 people will drop and I will have to find a way to plug up the gaps. I will post them at Next Adventure on Wednesday evening for the disc signing and then I will put them on the website and PDGA.com Wednesday Night.

Don't contact me to find out what group you are in as I will only tell you to wait. Groups are setup by player rating and PDGA number, such that every tee time will have a 1000 rated player or real close to 1000 rated. This way everyone will have 1 highly rated player in their group. The pools are split across two courses for the MPO's who will tee off first thing Friday Morning.

If you want more information on the player groupings read this. http://www.pdga.com/rules/1-6-grouping-and-sectioning section B (2)

what about people showing up wednesday evening. until when will we be able to check in? can we check in friday morning to get our players pack et. al. ?

check-in is Thursday 1-5pm, if you are arriving late Thursday this is what you do.

Don't stress about checkin at Tournament Central. Locate your tee time on PDGA.com or beaverstatefling.com and then go to your starting hole 20 minutes before your tee time. When your round is complete stop by tournament central and finish your check in.

Its nice to receive a phone call on Thursday to let us know you are still going to make it, this way we do not get stuck with any 2-somes out on the course, whcih can not happen anyways so we have to scramble to get another person in the group or an official to walk along.

Your tee times will look like this:

7:30 am West-10,

Which means you will be teeing off at 7:30 am on the West course and your starting hole is hole 10, NOT hole 1, be at your starting Hole 20 minutes before your tee time to allow the starter to verify your placement and write up the score card. This means 7:10 am in the above example

check-in is Thursday 1-5pm, if you are arriving late Thursday this is what you do.

This means 7:10 am in the above example

can anyone give us the skinny on this? how many holes were changed and which ones? is everything else the same? unfortunately i'm playing these courses for the first time since last year on friday. :headbang:

These are the changes as I see it so far:

East~
8E has a new long tee, 13E is in the long position, 16E is played from the pro pad and 18E has two fairways

West~7W has a new long tee

Jeff, Flash and the hard-working volunteer crew have poured tee pads, cleared blackerries and generally cleaning up for months...this place is looking sublime!

what about people showing up wednesday evening. until when will we be able to check in? can we check in friday morning to get our players pack et. al. ?

First see Flash's post! If you are checking in Friday morning go to your assigned hole, check in, play your round, then come to Tournament Central for your players pack. Prior to the first Tee times I will be holding volunteer briefings and making sure everyone is on the course where they need to be and understand their duties. I won't have time to hand out Players Packs until things are well under way. Oh yeah, and having morning coffee and trying to chill out.

For myself and the whole BSF Staff, I'd like to say thank you to all of the players and volunteers for helping to make this event run so smoothly. It's great that you all are asking questions now and not waiting until crunch time.

Dang, I'm getting excited! Company coming in tonight, Skins tomorrow, Meet and Greet at Next Adventure Wednesday, Free Clinic at Milo on Thursday, kick off Friday morning. Then add in the Mini Course and Putting Challenge and getting to meet all of the top Touring Pro's and "Over the Hill" Bob, (:biggrin2:)and you all are going to have one heck of a weekend.

Mike just wants to be sure everyone knows their tee times for Friday. The less the Thursday check-ins the more worry that folks may miss their tee times.

Tee times will be posted by Thursday if not sooner. A list might be available at Next Adventure at Wednesday nights event. Just a reminder, Ken Climo & Dave Feldberg at NA from 4:30-6:30!

Be sure your fellow disc golfers know their tee times.

Matt,

A phone call was a figure of speech, to me it represents many things but most importantly it means you have communicated to the group that you will not make it Thursday but plan to be here Friday. I am not going to post my phone number on here after the likes of you head hunters so please continue to either shoot me a pm or use the contact page on the website to let us know. Ernie Davis and I drove down to Milo yesterday from Seattle to watch/photograph the Fling. We had a great time, mostly on the west course, watching the best players in the world make the most amazing shots. Theo P. was following the lead card and sending out twitter updates as well as taking pictures which were getting uploaded to the pdga flickr page from the course. At the end of the day we got a chance to play a round on the west course before jumping in the car and getting back home by 1:30 am. Today I'm totally addicted to following the action on the pdga live scoring page (javascript:popUp('/tournament/live.php?TournID=9645')), Twitter (http://twitter.com/pdgalive) and Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/47790976@N02/) and I'm hoping that Christian can hang on for the NT win!

A very lucky shot, for sure. A shot that runs the basket but doesn't go in is certainly OB. Sure, he would have come back for a 3P, but the 1 is much cooler.

Nikko had a really great (lucky) drive on that hole on Sunday. It came in really high and hot, hit the tree behind the basket, and dropped straight down 2-3 feet from the basket. Brad Williams' shot stayed on the other side of the road, and was literally hanging over the curb. It was a pretty make-able putt, but perhaps he was looking at the OB behind the basket, or was thinking about his 3 putt for bogey on hole 10. I think Nikko tied it on this hole after being 5 strokes back to start the round. Very exciting stuff....

Got all 4 drives on video from the final round. Dietrich was the one on the edge of OB on the island hole, Brad was about 30 short of OB. Dietrich took the 3 putt bogey on 10, wish i got that on video! Nikko tied it on the 1196 foot hole 14 with a birdie and dietrich miss from 35 past. But retook the lead on 15 with 20 footer and Nikko miss from 80ish. Nikko tied it up with his toughhh putt on 16 but doss and dietrich did the same thing from the same place as nikko, like a good round of "horse" right there...

Not to sour anything, but it's funny how people bish and complain on various forums about lack of instant coverage on national tour events, but when BSF delivers rapid fire twitters and live scoring for the final round, no one says anything? I say awesome twittering and live scoring! ;)

Snap you are right, the Live Scoring, Tweeting, instant gratification was awesome. Even better I had a radio earpiece and was able to hear all of the scores being called in to TC. For those not close enough on hole 16, the bantering between Doss and Nikko was over the top. The difference between top players like them and average players I think is that when they get mad they make the darn putt for spite. Great final round! i expect this weekend to see some pretty awesome golf from the Advanced AMs in the Super Tour as well.

Totally heard the banter between the two. To me it sounded like Doss was helping him not get a stroke for leaning into the branches. Nikkos was being a D!!K and just trying to get under Doss' skin. Doss' come back "come on Nikko...really" Classic then he bangs the putt...IN YOUR FACE NIKKO!!

The only thing you need to understand is this: Nate is a very cool guy, while Nikko (sometimes) isn't.

That's my impression too. There are certain pros I don't really care for, but will root for them if they're in contention to beat Nikko.

:yay:... hey... i forgot... i'd like to call bullsh*t right now on everyone on this forum (myself included 'cause this is my first mention of it) and the pdga on not giving props, attention, kudos, congratulations to the women folk what played spectacular disc golf, too, this weekend!!!

CONGRATULATIONS TO LIZ CARR!!! WAY TO GO, GIRL, HUNG IN THERE AND PLAYED STRONG GOLF TO COME BACK FOR THE WIN... FOUGHT OFF THE YOUNG UPSTART PAIGE AND THE REIGNING CHAMP, DES... YAY, LIZ!!! AMAZING WORK!

(i wish i had a better idea of how their rounds went down, but i spent most of my weekend on hole 2 west, so i don't really know much... but i wanted to say something, at least :) )

peace,
emmarose

p.s. just sayin'...

The PDGA did give props to Liz Carr. On their home page is says "Fling: FPO Recap" and talks about the women. :whistler:

And on dgcoursereview.com, there is a whole thread just about Liz Carr winning. :dancing:

I will agree though that people on here haven't mentioned anything, so good job Liz Carr. :trophy: :yay:

(I didn't get to see their rounds either cause I was on hole 7 west. haha)

True dat. Liz nearly posted a 1000 rated round. I don't know the history of women's rounds through the years, but that's gotta be right up there near the top.
Gotta shoot 1010 to get into the top 10 rounds for women in this SSA range (about two throws better). Liz will probably snag one of the top 10 rounds at some point if she keeps improving like she has.

Emma you are right, the women just don't get the attention that the guys do. I followed over half of the FPO final round and it was spectacular. I of course was rooting my girl Paige. Paige, Liz Lopez, and Eric McCabe stayed with me last week and I can tell you this, they are not just outstanding golfers, they are outstanding people. On Friday night after Paige took a three stroke lead the first round we were at dinner and Liz who was only 4 strokes off was coaching her on how to play to win. Liz is still in the hunt for her first NT win but was willing to help her friend find it first. That is a true friend and makes me proud to have had them in my life for a week.

Liz Carr was amazing and earned the right to be Beaver State Fling Champion. She couldn't have done it of course without the water bottle I loaned her and coffee i gave her. So her win is all because of ME. :D Really though, after spending time with Liz (Carr) last week and talking at dinner and at the Clinic, she is a great lady and ambassador of our sport. I can't wait to see her back in Oregon and hopefully that's sooner than later.

A recap of the players from my stables:

Paige Pierce, FPO 2nd place
Liz Lopez, FPO 4th place
Eric McCabe, MPO 5th place

Go Team Cabal!:yay:

As someone who has gone to 6 NT's in the past 15 months, Doss and val are super cool people once you break that ice. Nikko can be nice but his youth and energy/passion take him too far sometimes unfortuately. He'll grow up sooner or later. I got the horse situation on camera, doubt I got the audio. I surveyed the scene today when I was playing east, there are a few branches that have bent downward to the ground where they were and the situation with Doss and Nikko started at least before hole 14 cuz I had to tell Nikko to shhhh while Doss was throwing his 2nd shot while Doss gave him the evil eye so something was up...
Can't wait for the videos to start popping up... I'll finish mine tonight or tomorrow... I did get the last few holes of the lead card for women... see if that makes y'all a lil happier? ;)

LOVE those background stories.
It's tidbits like these that create fans of players.
Getting to know players at events like the BSF can create bounds- or make you realize you might want to pick another player to cheer.

(BTW- I did put an immediate "Live Scoring" kudos thread out, I just randomly stuck it in the PDGA section. I thought it was great! Particularly with the 700 or so photos! )
Theos doing?

One thing I was wondering is how can people be allowed to play both weekends? Pros and Ams. I do understand that they are paying to play both weekends, so that part is covered no prob. My problem is that on one of the biggest tourney's of the year, people are playing both weekends and taking away someones spot in at least one of those weekends. I say just choose where you want to play and go for it. Dont take away someone elses spot to play so you can play the Fling 2 weeks in a row.

One in particular. Playing pro when you know you dont stand a chance just so you can play with the big boys, then come back the next weekend to play where you belong?

No I am not bitching cause I didnt make it in, didnt even try. Just think people should be made to pick a weekend and go with it, if they decide thats where they should be playing.

ok people lay it on me, I know its coming to me now!!!

The Pro side wasn't full, and you like negative attention. Does that help?

amateur weekend was a dog fight to register... Pro weekend was limited to pros in concept but when time was ticking close to tourney weekend, the remaining unfilled spots were opened to anyone who wanted them... The open weekend was not filled to capacity from my understanding...

Get the facts. The following was posted by Mike Phillips in this very thread:

We gave every pro every opportunity to register for the NT, heck we even displaced the Am's to another weekend. If they are too lazy to register or complete registration by now tough, its open to anyone and everyone that is a PDGA member. If you want to play both weekends at this point have at it, you will be as tired as Jeff and I will be when its all over!

Matt Benotsch is my favorite contributor on this website. All of you other contributors are a close second, I am sure.

I wonder what Troy's problem with Jeff Elliot is, anyway.

It's funny. I thought we might see little Troy out at the Fling this weekend. Then I remembered that I was playing with Valerie Jenkins' boyfriend and I am certain Troy stayed away from Milo for all of the right reasons.

Just doing my part for the disc golf community. :)

It will be fun to contrast the two events from a player's perspective. Oh yeah... and it will be fun to play where I belong. At Milo.

Hey we love the women at the Beaver State Fling, and that is why this year we covered all their rounds on live scoring. We only covered 3 of the men's rounds!

Next weekend coming up. We have had a few drops and a few adds. At this point if your spot can be filled and the shirt that was ordered for you can fit the person taking your spot you will get a full refund, else you will get a players pack.
