Do you have a disc golf mentor? One or multiple people who have improved your game either from watching and learning from or have given you advice or lessons? I would have to say that three people are responsible for my sudden advancement as of late:

Andrew Rivers: I've been playing lots of rounds with him and really watching his form and shot selection. His consistency and accuracy is uncanny, it's like he has a remote control on his disc or something.

Chris Waugh: I took a lesson from Chris, well because I was horrible hehe. He taught me form and challenged me to get better and showed me things that can be done with plastic that I never dreamed of.

Wayne Whitney: I have played many rounds with Wayne, most notably during Terrace and Arlington doubles and I have taken a lot from him because we have similar body types and throwing motions. When he gives me a tip out on the course I listen.

So I guess I want to share that and say thanks to these people and kiss a little but. So who are your mentors?

I'd like to thank Jub for showing me the secret hyzer route on Seatac #14. It really opens up the hole.

Josh from oregon.........dont know the last name. Played one round with him and he showed me the three finger power grip vs. The four finger.........basically tucking the pinky back.........and i did gain some pretty good distance right away. Took a little getting use to, but within a month it seems pretty natural now. Thanks to josh and the katana for giving me a little more distance.

Actually that is just one of many people i have learned from whether they were am or pro. I agree with nathan........scott is a great mentor. I learned some good stuff from him more than he may realize..........thank you.

I would have to thank three people as well.
Lets just name them in alphabetical order: Tony Hahn, Ryan Kilgore, and Scot More.
I guess I have been lucky to have 3 great ambassadors of the game at my home course.

I'd like to thank the original Mentor, Jerry Miller. I would not be involved with this sport without him.

And a big thanks to Brody Miller. I wouldn't be half the player I am without the countless rounds played with Brody.

Colin and Nate and the whole Sexton crew made me the golfer I am today. I learn from everyone and anyone who has something good to say, but there is no doubt I wouldn't be golfing like I am without those guys.

I try to seek out mentors as much as possible, and there are many I look up to, but Ryan Gwillim has definitely been the most helpful for me. I've logged many rounds with him and I really view him as an invaluable resource for progressing my knowledge of the game. Dion Arlyn has also become someone I really learn from. Thanks guys.

James Wilson was always at the course when I started. He got me started with good form and balance. Watching werth never hurt anybody. The counless discussions about disc selection and mechanics with mike Cain have led to some ground breaking ideas. feldberg is always good for a tip from time to time. Jeff wilman, dennis lindland, DAVE "MAD MAN" MACADEN (greatest bagger to play the game), poakalani, riverside locals from back on the day that aren't listed. Papa has come through for me from time to time. So many people have helped me whether they knew it or not. Good thread tom.

Erik "Buck" Smith was the first seriously good golfer who took me under his wing. Also conversations and rounds with Nate Sexton has helped me refine my game. But my best "coach" was my buddy BVD (ben van deusen) we started around the same time and pushed each other to improve. We drove to and from tournaments together and talked out seemingly every shot in every round. Winning Whistler's Bend Doubles in Open with Ben is still probably my favorite of my few victories in that division.

Big Shout outs to Eugene Locals Tom Embree, Bruce Sisson, Buck Smith, Roller Bob, Brother Bob, Dr Richter, Sasquatch, Dave Battaglia, and Mike Flaminio. These guys had the patience to teach a punk 10 year old with a "Bowl Cut". I would not be the golfer I am today without their support on and off the course. They were the first ones to drag me around to tournaments in the 90's. Oh, and my middle school PE Teach Mr Dievendorf who allowed me to play Disc Golf while the class played Dodgeball......I also got 5 PE credits my senior year of high school for my involvement on tour playing disc......suckers lmao

On a more National Level I'd like to thank Glen Whitlock, Tim Selinske, Cary Trotter, Rob Harding, Avery Jenkins, Ken Climo, and Barry Schultz. Glen for being an amazingly Crazy "Human Being".....Tim for being the Biggest Heart in Disc Golf....Cary for being a rock solid golfer and friend.....Rob for being Top Dawg in Santa Cruz and always has fun.....Avery for always giving an ear and supporting the cause....Climo for being the larger than life guy he is....and Barry for being Barry (are you down with the smoothness? come on get up get down with the smoothness....**Static X**)...i think, lol. peACE

Ooh, and can't forget Brad "Junebug" Hammock. He has some of the best stories in the game......and they're ALL true...lmao

I'd have to thank Artie up at Terrace for getting me hooked on day one!!!
Eric Messford (who introduced me to my dad!!!) and Thor for playing with me since day two (literally) and always giving me advice and helping me progress my game.
BMOB, The numerous rounds that I play with my dad always inspire me to keep on keepin' on, I think he's amazing and has one of the best putts out there!
Lowell Shields convinced me to play my first tournament... which opened up a whole new world of golf!
Chris Gilberts for being the great fun loving guy he is, no matter what every time I see him, he gives me the humble reminder "as long as you're having fun" and a big ol' smile!!!

Dave McAdden... gone but not forgotten, he will long be missed by those that knew him. Dave was a true friend, a superb disc golfer, and a genuinely good person who was always giving out sound advice and smiles.
If you were to ask thisk question to alot of the dg'ers around Seattle, such as Riverside DGC or North Park, David "Madman" McAdden's name would be the first name spoken by many, and for good reason.:bowing:

Shout out to Frank "don't call me stinky leg" Lewis. He was the first person I saw throw an ace run at Jewel's old number one hole on one of my first days out there. It was the farthest and most precise shot I had seen at the time and it was absolutley mind blowing to see.

Terrace Creek Todd was the first person to tell me to put hyzer on my disc to keep it from turning over (also on Jewel's old number one hole).

Guy Dahmen hooked me up with lots of different types of discs to try out before I even knew there was a difference between innova and discraft.

Steve Rolling for getting Juel put in. I may have never started playing had there not been a course across the street.

My buddy Brett V for gettting me motivated to go out and play other courses when I first started

Thanks to Dr. Fred who put in a course next to my house the weekend I sold that house.

Thanks to Cajun who I met at the first doubles night and he finally slapped me and told me to quit calling it frisbee golf.

Thanks to Guy who has the ability to watch you throw and tell you what discs you need.

Thanks to Gawain and Jordan from Portland for making me come down to my first tournament ever and showing me how much fun disc golf can be.

Thanks to Rolling, Ed, Shaun, Caj and all the other Lake Stevens bro's for making me crave a round of disc golf every day I wake up.

Thanks to Jim Anderson who black aced a hole from 3 feet away and made me laugh so hard I actually spotted my shorts.

Thanks to Dr. Hsu from the Sports Medicine Clinic for reattaching my rotator cuff and bicep tendon.

Thanks to everyone else I have ever played with that makes a round of golf so much fun. Remember, it's not whether you win or lose. It's whether I win or lose.....

Being remote and pretty much on my own most of the time, I guess I'd have to thank the interwebs for "tips for beginners." Like most things I've ever done, I learned by doing. But you know what they say about the self-taught? They have a fool for their teacher.

Though I only got to play a few rounds here with him, I'm just glad I got to meet the Madman. He was so obviously a gem, it didn't take long to know it. It feels good to know he loved this place. I get to remember him every time I play the 13th hole. I did a little work on that green just today.

A bunch of people you guys probably don't know but I'll list them up anyway. I've also violated the thread by posting mostly people who've taught me about everything but how to throw a disc :)

Kyle Maute - for getting me thinking seriously about strategy and placement over power
Jay Bakula - great player and always had good advice for me as a young'un
Tim Beron - nobody dg'er I've ever met is more selfless or works harder than this guy, an inspiration to be involved in making disc golf happen, not just playing
Sheila Teves - for continually teaching me more and more about the sport
PK - for being our bestest disc golf friend

Other notables: Pat Mullins, Ragnar Overby, John Biscoe, Mike & Cathy Kamm, Bill Gagnon, Gary Lewis

I remember an older gent named Richard - Korean war vet that used to play days at Pier 5 years ago and always had a grabber and a bag for garbage.

Didn't learn much about golf from him, but I pick up crap on courses to this day.

More recently Tyler Christensen has helped me quite a bit by pointing out things that he learned from Dave Feldberg and letting me know that, yeah, Eric you do all that wrong too. The tips from the last month or so have me throwing backhands as far as I used to throw forehands without pain...

He's also fun to watch hitting 450+ foot drives and drilling 50' putts.

Mike Best has been a great source of understated tips over the years.

And as far as disc wisdom gleaned from elders, Jerry Miller and Ol' Bob have both imparted some unquantifiable wisdom upon me.

And finally, I'd like to thank the Flying Spaghetti Monster for reaching out it's noodly appendage on four separate occasions and blasting the biscuit into the basket on my behalf.

I have to give props to those who mentored me:

The Lissaman brothers John and Jeff the twin brothers from OGLV. for their consistent great game.
Paul Harris for his happy 40 foot horeshoe putts
and teaching Scott Stokeley how to do it.
Scott Zimmerman for his EXCEPTIONAL abilities
Gary Gillman as inspiration
Stork for being himself (and having the BEST halloween costume ever)
Tim Selinski for being my friend
Tom Embree who I mentored even though he would not admit it. I hope you are laughing Tom!!!!! he still was a mentor....

In some ways I wish I had found a mentor when I started playing disc golf, I played solo at Pier park for about a year never really getting anywhere before I stumbled upon a flyer for Hab/Rec 2004, honestly just finding the amazing Portland disc golf community was in some ways my mentor, being able to get little tips and advice from so many different players was amazing. I'll throw a shout out to Jerry Miller for giving lots of advice over the years. I'll also throw a shout out to Ty Baker and the Rockwood winter series, having a fun event and series to look forward to every week in my first year of competitive disc golf really made me push my game out of the recreational realm into some I got really dedicated to.

Kent Schafer from Illinois - former President of DDGA, taught me alot of stuff about the game and how it works. Got me from a noob to a "educated" disc golfer fast...
As for skills, I have not played more than one round with anyone rated above 970 ever, which might be why I am not improving as fast as I would like. But thanks to Justin Ashton, Tim Monigan, Larry Pearce and Chris Sewell, all Deaf Disc Golfers who got me more into the game.
Nate Sexton deserves a little praise for his little pre tournament lesson he gave me which helped me on a few holes at Dexter and got me the win, especially that sudden death hole.

When I first started playing golf the one person I played with the most was my brother Brandon. We also played with a pro from Lebanon, Scott Thompson. He taught us both a lot about golf and I can't speek for Brandon but Scott was my first mentor in golf. I still think of the advice he gave me and I apply it to my golf almost every shot.

Brandon and i both started around the same time and we pushed eachother the get better. We travel to tournaments together to this day. The tournaments that we traveled to that led to some great memories were the ole tournaments in the early 2000s. I also learned a ton from the Eugene guys at those tournaments.

So thank you Brandon, Scott, and the old school ole guys. You all rock.

Well since there were no other dger's down here but me, my disc golf mentor was the first PDGA rag I received back in 1988.
New discs then were Lightnings 'P40-Flying Tiger' & Discrafts 'Windstar'.
The '88 Minnesota Majestic champ took home $500.
Dr. Rick voakes was already an amazing disc golfer and one of my first role models.
At 39 years young he won the pro masters in the '88 worlds with a -35, which was 5 throws lower than the top pro!
I also remember meeting Glen Whitlock for the first time down in Berzerkely.
He told me stories of traveling around the US playing disc golf, and then later I'd follow him in the "going down" section of the PDGA mag which had tourney results.
I miss those times.
