I played Lakewood yesturday. Decided to throw just my star ontario roc(s). I shot 4 under par. Almost aced 10 just came up 5 feet short(long pin). Par on geezer. So I'm thinking of making a bi-weekly Roc throwin' club. I've heard of (rumor?) a player at seatac that throws only roc's. Any takers for a roc-o-rific game of golf?? I'm always down for some ctp's and mabe a 5$ ace pot..

My friends and I do this all the time - play the short course at Hornings with all rocs or just limit it to a single disc on a longer course.
If you wind up in oregon and want to do this, count me in!

Until Discraft discontinues the Buzzz.
They have a penchant for discontinuing great molds. X2, Xtreme, MRV, MRX, Talon, X-Clone, Swirl APX... What's next, the Predator?

There will probably never be a one-size-fits-all disc. If you throw any disc enough to get it, to know what it is for you, you should know by then that it may not be that to another. I don't have much pop, and Rocs have never worked for my arm speed, form, and grip strength. I take up the FLX Buzzz and someone says to me, "throw it hard, it'll go straight." Bingo, for me that was true. What I've been told about the Roc is that it takes a bit to learn how to throw them, Well, I tried a bit, and it never came to me. That's where I'm at this year. I loves them FLX Buzzzes so much that I carry three, to get in more "fun" throws.

I probably use my Four Times JK Pro Aviar the way you use your XD. With that said, throwing my Buzzzes, I have to be sure that I don't overshoot my landings. The Buzzzes go a bit farther than the JK. That seems to be because I have to load up the power, unless it is a steep downhill. Take a little off the Buzzz, on the level, and it goes way to the stable side of things. But, if it's way down a steep hill... Those are the shots I love the Buzzz best for. I feel like I'm throwing darts. I can usually get dialed in on my target by the third one. Threading a needle downhill; so much fun.

i am totally in the market for a longer midrange disc that will perform like my xd... just longer... i used to really depend on my eclipse, but now that my muscles are so huge (;)) it tends to flip a little too easily for me instead of holding it's straight line... everything i've tried tends to fade too much left at the end of the flight...

The star and champ(i own them all)just are different beasts compared to the original allure the Roc's brought to the game.

I had a dx glow roc. I hit a tree about 20 foot into a monster drive and split in two!! 5th throw:( I've decided to stay with star roc's. The star mako is my next disc to get. Seems to "float" nicer that a roc does at slower speeds.

I think there should be a Team Roc vs. Team Buzz show down. Two rounds- each team plays with their preferred discs and the second round each team switches and plays with "gasp" the inferior disc. Be interesting to see what the scores are. Plus the Core is better than both.

Talk about your self respect after you hit spell-check.
I've thrown rocs and buzzzes side by side several times over the last year and folks that whine about one or the other are almost as compelling as coke v. pepsi zealots.
I throw my super roc and one of the star-like plastic buzzzzzzzes the same way and guess what? The 2 discs are usually sitting within 5 feet of each other.
In my experience, the discraft v. innova discussion reaches it's dumbest point when the roc v. buzz pseudoargument comes up.
For the fellow that found a san marino to be too flippy, remember, the San Marino is supposed to be the flippy roc - if you were expecting something else, your disappointment can't be blamed on the disc.
Wind and stability aside, if you're throwing a roc or a buzz inside of 200' and feel you have something to cry about, you do.
Operator Error.
It's really that simple.

I tried and tried to make Rocs work, and couldn't. Throwing the Buzzzes came naturally. What am I supposed to say? It's not Innova v. Discraft. I use both, but for different things.

I hear ya and believe ya, but that sweet purple-stamp buzzz of yours was one of the lot that seemed to cozy up to my super rocs.
I think we need to arrange a clinical trial where subjects are fitted with those collars they put on dogs to keep them from scratching their ears and are handed a series of mid-ranges and challenged to throw 217' at a basket.
I honestly think the results would bore us with their uniformity regardless of mold/manufacurer.

Maybe people who find success throwing Rocs are genetically predisposed to such primitive or "caveman" pastimes. I submit that at some moment, long ago, the human family tree branched, with Buzzz-throwers on one branch and Roc-throwers on another. My only concern, at this late date, would be what might come from the accidental interbreeding of these two, now so diverse, subspecies! It might not be pretty.

Hello,
My name is Yose and I'm a Rocaholic.
Once you find the mold you like try getting 3 or 4 the same weight.
Use 2 of them in the woods and beat the holy crap out of at least one of them (they'll love ya for it), keep the other two clean for nice stable flights out in the open.
The 2 tuned ones will become some of the straightest flying pieces of plastic you can throw, especially if they them there flat ones, they're golden!

That seems like a bit of a quality control issue. I would think the mold should be the same regardless of factory. The Roc should have one design with specific flight rating and the variants should be called something else.
Does that make sense or am I crazy? I guess the question is at what point does the flight variance from overstable to understable make the Roc a different disc? Like a Roc with less fade becomes a Shark.

i dont think your crazy at all! i completely agree with you. i really wish more people would see it this way also. after a while you will come to find that Innova doesnt really have much quality control nor do they want to.
i stopped using Innova discs becuase i couldnt trust that 2 of the same discs would fly the same. they have some really great disc molds, but the inconsistoncies of flight from one disc to another just ruins it. there ARE other companies out there that take much more pride in providing high quality and consistant discs.

OR maybe there really is no difference between a Rancho, San Marino and Ontario Roc. Maybe the idea that one is more overstable and another understable is all in the eye of the thrower. Unless you can consistently throw the disc with the same power, angle and touch with the same wind and weather conditions you CANNOT reliably compare. You would need a robot with fixed standards of throwing.

I think mrDROCK should take the ROC out of mrDROCK as it could mean bad mojo for your ju ju or buzzz or whatever wrong mid range you're throwing. :biggrin2:
My question to you non believers is why do MOST of the BEST disc golfers in the world throw ROCS?
Also, again ... why did Discraft make the Wasp identical to the Roc?
It's called Follow the Leader.:biggrin2:
darn this is fun!
i have surpassed all in the area of midrange enlightenment!!:nahnah:
i have put the decrepid roc in the dumpster, i have laid the buzzz on its silken pillow for rest, and have been brought to a higher plain of enlightenment with the METEOR!!! :bowing::bowing:bow down to the power of the METEOR!!!:bowing::bowing:

OR maybe there really is no difference between a Rancho, San Marino and Ontario Roc.
I think you are correct sir!
So if any of you fellers have any Sannies laying around that you want to trade or sell, please pm me.
Seriously though a person could make any of each mold fly all three different ways and all lines in between, which is the real beauty of a Roc!
It really does depend on the thrower.
I had the honor and pleasure of caddying for Dave F. and hanging out in a group with the "King" and Avery. Talk about throwing Rocs!
Them there fellers are Masters of the Roc!
IN ROC I TRUST

Really the only midrange I have been using is a Shark. I just bought a Wolf to try some rollers. I am not dogging the Roc by any means. I am very curious about picking up one myself, I am just trying to discern the difference (if any) between the Rocs... Classic included.

Don't you know that you are a shooting star... dont'cha know? (Bad Company)
It's just another disc.
It'll fade away while your buddies Roc's stay on a straight flight to the pin.

Attaboy, I can see you can see the light of the Roc's power.
Classics are old school stuff, sort of like XD's.
Grab 2 dx ranchos and try em.
If you don't like em I bet you could easily find someone to buy em.
Especially if they are already beat up a bit.

OR maybe there really is no difference between a Rancho, San Marino and Ontario Roc. There are 3 different molds. Basically 3 different yet similar midrange discs all called Roc. I have no use for anything other than ranchos. One could decide that this is too difficult a concept to grasp, and follow this simplistic way of thinking down the road that ultimately ends in throwing an inferior midrange disc.

Are you saying the other Rocs are inferior to the Rancho?

Or if you decide to let people play with the best midrange ever made - the Buzzz - let me know!
PFFFFFFTTTTTTT!!!
How did I miss this...
Keep your discCRAP out of this thread, please. No need to sully the time-tested and proven best disc ever made... the ROC.

DX Glow Roc, best mid-range ever made, hands down.
Especially if we are talking the Ontario mold. This disc rolls. It flies. Hell... it flat out ROCS!

All rocs will eventually become the same thing. The different molds just have a different starting point. a beat ontario is no different than a beat rancho or san marino. I have 2 ranchos both KC pro and 3 ontarios two DX and 1 special blend. The second DX ontario is only because I lost my beat KC rancho. A roc is a roc and will be subtly different depending on the mold. That is the difference in the names is not just where they are made but they use different molds or mold pieces. its not QC (anymore) but a way to get more variety from a mold. the flights are too similar to rename the discs but are marked so that people can tell them apart. Rocs are the shnit!
I do have a san marino from last years hab rec for trade.

I got a really cool 174g bottom stamped Roc with the thrower grapic the other day. The disc is yellow and the stamp is a metalic purple. I am really happy with the find. I have not thrown it yet though it already has my name and number on it and is in my bag ready to go. I think the next time I play my home course I am going to use nothing but my two Rocs.

That is a gudt idea for any disc you wish to learn.
The Roc is a great disc for a one disc gig!
All you need is Roc, Roc
Roc is all you need
Roc is all you need

Are you saying the other Rocs are inferior to the Rancho? That's just my personal preference. I'm just saying it may be foolish to dismiss rocs in general simply because there is more than one disc by that name and it takes a little knowledge to know the difference.
I do suggest dx ranchos as the place to start for anyone interested in getting into rocs for the first time though. They have been in standard production for years so they are cheap and easy to get. They also handle most midrange lines, since when new they have a nice predictable low speed fade and when worn they straighten out to hold any line you want. Plus when I first started using rocs the ontario and sanny weren't in standard production and I didn't want to get attached to any OOP discs.
(Just to clear up any additional confusion since I haven't seen it mentioned on this thread, Classic Roc = XD with a bead.)
