View Full Version : Camp Taloali Deaf Youth Camp Fundraiser @ Jerry Miller DGC May 15-16

As mentioned a million times already, I am hosting a PDGA Charity Endowment Fundraiser Tournament! Originally it was going to be a Tier-B but apparently there was a misunderstanding and it must be a Tier-C, but however, that is not going to stop me from adding as much cash as I can to the Pro purse. The entry fees will be a little low so that people have more money to spend on lodging, doubles, glow rounds, and other activities, which will benefit everyone!
The amateurs will be getting a super players pack and "trophy only" while Pro's will be purely CASH!
There are quite a few details to be worked out but all is going smooth.
I am still looking for a few volunteers to help me in a few areas, please email me or ping me... snap7times@gmail.com.
I also will need to borrow baskets for the temporary course as well so please let me know if you bring a basket for us to borrow for the weekend.
Sponsors will mean a lot to this tournament and if you are interested in sponsoring, please email me.
Tee Sign Sponsor - $20 for one hole; $30 for 2 holes; $50 for 4 holes
Disc stamp sponsor - $75 *Limited spots

Registration will be done on PDGA and all Open divisions will be $40 and all Amateur divisions will be $30. There will be NO "Non-Pdga membership fees"! So this is a good tournament for non members to play in as well!

A simple example of breakdown of entry fee for Open would be;
$4 - automatic requirement from PDGA to be donated to Charity - Camp Taloali
$9 - 25% requirement to be donated to Charity - Camp Taloali
$3 - DDGA/Operation fees *PDGA and DDGA sanctioning fees
$24 - Payout

My goal is to have at least $500 added to the payout *I had over $700 added to the payout for ODDGC which only had 20 registered players in all the open divisions combined.

There are 10 cabins that sleep 8 each with heat and individual lockers. These will be $10 per person per night. Camping/5th wheel is $6 per person per night. There are 5 RV hook ups available for $30 per night.

There will be 4 rounds, 2 rounds on each course. The permanent course plays a bit easy but some holes will have their tee boxes moved to add difficulty.

There will be a camp bonfire on Friday and Saturday night plus glow both nights for a small fee to cover glow equipment provided. There are hot showers and clean bathrooms on the main grounds. Fishing is allowed on the river, but of course licenses are required. NO pets please, there are many wild animals that roam the camp, especially deer. Hot coffee will be provided on both mornings.

I'll add more info as we go along. Volunteers for small duties and sponsorships will go a long way to helping me out. This tournament is to help the Deaf Youth Camps that occur during the summer and to prove that Disc Golf was a good investment to the Camp board as well..

Any questions, ask away! A flyer will come out in a few weeks once a few more details are worked out in player packages and so forth. PDGA sign up should be up in less than 2 weeks hopefully.

The temp course measurements is looking like this; rough estimate
500+ - 1
400+ - 2
300+ - 6
300 and under - 9

Only have 4 registered players for this???? Come on and register and play, there is going to be 7 rounds of golf provided, 4 during singles, 2 glow rounds and random doubles... wake up, throw, go to sleep, wake up and throw some more!
Player packs are guaranteed 2 discs per AM player, one will be sparkle! And have over $100 added to pro purse already. Hole sponsorships help this event big time... check out the flier people! And reg list is updated daily if not hourly...
The money raised through this tournament will help the Deaf youth camps this summer and help raise money for the permanent course for tee pads and alt pin placements among other projects we have listed for this course...

snap7times
March 24th, 2010, 02:11 PM
for you open players, since this is a C-tier, added cash will be done special as approved by PDGA. The champions will get a padded cash prize seperate from suggested 40 percent payout table... I know you open players are all excited to see that...

T_hyzer
March 28th, 2010, 10:52 PM
so the am divisions do not have a payout...just a trophy?

snap7times
March 28th, 2010, 11:13 PM
that is what super players pack means, your players pack will be worth more than the Net entry fee. Right now it's 2 discs per player, one will be a premium plastic... Remember there is a larger goal here, raise money for the Deaf camp and for the course development.

snap7times
March 29th, 2010, 11:56 AM
And don't forget, the $10 non pdga member fee is waived, that $10 saved! How often can you play a PDGA tournament and not have to pay the fees? And the fees that PDGA would get from each player get donated to the Camp instead of PDGA!
Disc Golf Depot will be on site with merch for sale as well... Free coffee both mornings ready to go at 7AM...

Bummer no Jr. divisions. Seems ironic in a way. Mr. 42992 ( age 7 ) is seeking a division. His uncle would help out with a jr. group if needed. Can you reserve a cabin. Seems like a great place for kids.

snap7times
April 4th, 2010, 09:00 AM
If there are 3 or more Juniors then the division can be created. Juniors don't have to play in junior divisions, they can play novice, rec, int etc..
Email me at snap7times@gmail.com if you want a single cabin to be reserved. The place is very kid friendly, it was made for them after all...

Ok people... 5 weeks left. I don't know how else to properly express myself, but I am a bit disappointed or confused on why there is a dramatic opposite response to this tournament as to any other tournament in the northwest as in terms of registration and so forth? Not one person has told me any reason or reasons that is preventing this tournament to be full or at least half full by now? If it is something in the schedule that is preventing over 50 people from registrating, let me know so that I can change it and get those 50 people in. What is it?

Will the 2nd 18 hole course be available to play before the tournament? 1 day before?
Or at least a map of it so we can take a look at it.

My main focus on Friday before the tournament will be putting together the Temp course as I get the temp baskets from various people; I will first set up all the tees by flags on Friday morning and mark basket placements with orange paint. I do have the layout on paper and will try my best to print a map, draw on it, scan it and post it sometime in the next week, keep bugging me and it will get done. Am working with a professional artist on the disc stamp tonight for final approval...
For the Jerry Miller course, a few tees will be moved to add difficulty and distance.
Right now on Paper it looks like the Temp course will have holes in these ranges
200-300 = 8
300-400 = 7
400-500 = 2
500+ = 1

snap7times
April 19th, 2010, 09:18 PM
got multiple pictures of all the holes for the course directories, will upload them this week. We had 6-7 people spend 4-5 hours clearing thousands of rocks and sticks to make the fairways much more clear and clean looking for the tournament/summer.
My personal suggestion is to wear long socks with shorts or pants to make the round playing more fun in case your disc goes astray.
There were more than 30-40 people cleaning up the main grounds and doing various cleaning and repair to all the buildings so the cabins are cleannnnn.

Friday Random Doubles tee off at 5pm, $5 per player, sign ups be 430 at main grounds.
Friday Glow singles tee off at 9pm, $5 per player, sign ups be at 830 at main grounds.
Saturday-sunday PDGA sanctioned singles 4 rounds, 2 rounds per day, $30 for AMS, $40 for Pros
Saturday Glow singles tee off at 9pm, $5 per player, sign ups be at 830 at main grounds
Glow sticks will be provided both nights.

There are 1-3 place trophies for the 6 divisions that got signed up for as of Saturday. First place trophies for all but 1 division are hand made professionally by a local Deaf carpenter and are the bomb! This event does need more players. This is the week to flood Snap with emails of "I want to play! Put me on the list, and I'll pay when I arrive!"

This event promises to have it all: 4 separate events, glow, camping, PDGA points, raise money for the deaf youth camp, cabins, hot showers, RV hookups, TWO 18-hole courses, sweet trophies, lunch nearby, and much much more!

I hope to see some you all out there. This will be a great time! I can tell a lot of effort has gone into this tourney, and I know from experience that is what it takes to make a great event . Let's support Snap and his crew, Camp Taloali, deaf kids, and go have a great time playing disc golf while doing it!

Alright, arrived up in Oregon last night, spent 5 hours setting up the Temp course today. Got all the teesigns in, teepads flagged and painted, the pin placements flagged and painted as well. Baskets will go in as soon as they arrive from various people on Friday and saturday but those who want to practice the layout, go for it. I did my best with what I had to work with and think the last 6 holes are especially sweet, I might be just being paranoid and the whole thing is sick haha.... Hole 12 is sadistic, hard mando left with the basket on the little berm next to the river for a must par 3.
Trophies - check
Player pack discs - check *1 sparkle and 1 D for first 47 AMS that register, currently at around 24.
Tee signs - check
Temp course set up - check
Permeant course ready to go - check - will move a few tees farther back in the morning Friday
There will be a $1 per throw, no limit on throws, on Sunday for CTP to win a gold metal prize mini basket!
There will be no food provided, but am working on someone selling lunch on Sunday. Sorry Gawain.
Both courses have been mowed extensively by the caretaker as he is really going all out to prep the grounds for this tournament! Big thanks to Richard and his family.
I have 120 glow sticks and tape ready to rock for the 2 rounds of glow.
The stamp on the tournament discs was done by a deaf artist who gave disc golf a try and did a great job!
This will be a very top notch C tier tournament! Probably easily confused with a B tier if all goes well ;)
Where are the PROS??? As of right now, all added cash goes to first place? We don't want Dion taking all the money and the sweet first place trophy which valued at $45 do we!? The 2007 Deaf National Champ is recovering from ankle surgery but heard about playing with some top notch Oregon pros and is gonna put his name into the hat!
Come show up for 1 or 2 or 3 or all 4 of the events! Everyone will get their money's worth and feel great about contributing to our youth of tomorrow!
I'll be at Taloali at 10am Friday and working all day making everything smooth. See you there! Don't miss this!

Thanks to Dion for dragging those pros to the tournament, that made it that much more successful. All the hole sponsors and those who brought out the portable baskets, so sweet, thanks! Made all the difference, hope everyone enjoyed the layouts that I made right before the tournament. Thanks to all who came, $700 got raised for the camp! Maybe next time we can double the numbers and make it $1500. The rounds went unbeliveably smooth and fastttt... everyone was back on the road by 4pm... yeah baby... Ok time for bed zzzz...

Great job, Snap. The event was a blast, and went off without a hitch. The weather was fantastic, the courses were great, the camp was beautiful. The people were awesome, I had a great time playing with Snap, Shane, Dan, Craig, & Jerry on my cards! It was cool meeting some new people, and seeing all the mid-valley die-hards. The trophies are cool, the mini basket prize was sweet. If you missed this event, I strongly suggest you catch it next time, it was really fun!

Regarding the scores:

* Craig Nielsen is missing from the leaderboard, he shot 207 to tie Dan Hammett, and Dan won the playoff.

Thanks! Hope to hear more from others what they thought of the weekend. For those who can't tell the difference in the names on the tournament listing, there were 25 hearing players and 14 Deaf players, but I am sure everyone will say it went smoothly and communication was easy all around.
Justin Skinnell won the playoff for 2nd in the Open division and Dan Hammmett won the playoff for the adv masters.
Justin David had a fantastic weekend and the open guys are gonna have a "talk" with him soon, but am sure Justin slept with his new trophy last night heh.

Forgot to add, new course records for both courses, Shane, Justin, Brice, Josh, and Justin David all share the -11 record on the Jerry Miller course. Justin skinnell has the temp course record at -12 and is unofficially 1032 rated.
Brice Lang hit his first PDGA tournament ace in the first round on Jerry Miller hole 18.
Congrats to Shane Waters for his first PDGA win, was nice playing with him twice, and being on the lead card for open, didn't think I would have a chance in "heck" to ever compete with these guys, it was great!
There was $242 added to cash payout for total of $485 to pro purse, 1st took $200, 2nd $125, 3rd 90, 4th $70 but 2nd and 3rd tied so $107 each for 2nd and 3rd.

Well done, Nathan!! :trophy: He did good job as last year's ODDGA T.D., and now he did outdo himself by doing a great job running his very first PDGA event!! It was nice to see the mixture of hearing and deaf players in the first round, and watching those players keep paying $ 1.00 after and after in the C.T.P contest to win sweet mini basket after 4th round. Thank you to everyone for coming down to the event to support the efforts to bring disc golf to deaf youth campers! :yay:

Another question: Why don't round ratings appear for the Rec, Intermediate, & Advanced Women? Is it because there were never enough propagators in their pool? Can that be rectified? Will it affect ratings for our pool?

Again, great job, and wow am I sore after playing my second 72-hole 2-day tourney this year!

Nathan, you know I had a great time there. I always do around the hearing impaired. I love you guys and gals :)

OUt of the 9 of us in the Int men division, I was 2nd to last going into the final round and played well enough to end up 5th. I am happy with that, but could have done a lot better.

Nate said we raised about $700 for the camp. :yay::cheers:

This event along with the ODDGC last year has me inspired to learn a lot more ASL. I learned a lot of signs this weekend and communication was not a problem.

Nathan, I posted some pics on my facebook page if you want to see them. feel free to use any that you want for personal use.

I know I plan to attend every single deaf event I can from here on out!!!

There are various pictures on various facebook pages, ladybuzzz took pictures of the awards. I'll try to copy some and post on here in the next few days. I forgot to add that the trophies have space in the middle on the 1st and 2nd place trophies for the winners to have thier names put in either professionally or by themselves.
As for the ratings for the other groups, I'm guessing I don't have enough PDGA members in there or have their numbers? I thought there would be enough but thinking there needs to be a few more, I'll look up the players names and see if i get a few more pdga numbers?
Am still in Salem until tomorrow morning, then it's back down to california to my beautiful pregnant fiance who is missing her "Boyes"...
I hope that someone hosts one of the winter series tournaments at camp taloali, every disc golf related event hosted at camp taloali gets 50 percent of the rental revenue from camping/cabin fees given to the course development fund. Todd and I are really wanting to get those alt pins and pro pads put in this fall, hopefully we can do it to generate more interest in the course from the public. I did share with my groups some of our plans and they were very excited to see the ongoing progress there.
Thanks to all, I'll chime in again soon, gotta pack...

Snap, great courses, great weather, really great people and I even got to watch a bald eagle. Thanks for all your work, it really showed as the tourney went so smooth. Gawain, congrats on first place. It was amazing as you hit long put after long put. Can't wait till next year.

Thanks guys and gals... I updated a few more pdga numbers that I had to search for, ratings got changed a bit, not for the better like some of us had hoped. oh well... Camp Taloali along the river has tons of eagles and hawks as I used to go with my buddies rafting or tubing from mehama/lyons down the river to camp taloali on those hot hot summer days and you can see them on the river... just got home a few hours ago, whew what a drive, forgot how beautiful Oregon is compared to california...

I ended up with more discs leftover than anticipated. There are sparkle squalls and rogues, D Tsuami's and RDGA Reefs.
The Reef and Tsuami's are $10 and the Sparkle's are $15. All these have the tournament stamp on them and all proceeds go to next year's fundraiser, which I will do again based on the popular request. I accept check or paypal. Shipping will be around $5 for the first disc...

The 2nd annual Camp Taloali Deaf Youth Camp Fundraiser @ Jerry Miller DGC will be on May 14-15, 2011.
Expect this tournament to be twice as better as a few things will change for the better. The courses will be very different and much more challenging and FUN!

It's on the PDGA schedule, pdga sign up will be up and running within a week I hope. Flyer will be posted in a week or so as well. Hope to fill this baby up this year, it was a great one last year... 1 course this time but 2 different layouts, 1 using the main course, 1 using half and half and being par 64-66ish... 3 rounds not 4 this time.
