Stumptown Disc Golf
presents
2010 Oregon Disc Golf Championships
Sept 18th & 19th
3 rounds of 18 holes at Trojan Disc Golf Course
This PDGA sanctioned B-Tier invitation only event aims to deliver the USDGC experience to players right here in Oregon. In order to crown 4 Oregon State Champions, we will be setting up the Trojan Disc Golf Course in its most challenging layout ever.
Divisions & Number of Players:
76 total players
32 Open Men, 6 Open Women, 32 Advanced Men, 6 Advanced Women
Invitations
Invitations will be awarded to the top eligible finishers in each division based on their overall score for that weekend. Players can only qualify once and invitations are non-transferable. In the event of a tie, I will give a spot to both players and remove one spot from the last chance qualifier.
To be eligible to qualify for the ORDGC players will need to pay $10 prior to the start of the first round at each qualifying event for their scores for that weekend to count. This $10 is NOT included in any entry fee for any of the above listed events. This is an entirely separate event and fee.
Qualifiers
The following events will serve as qualifiers for the ORDGC:
McIver 3PO, Great Northwest Open, Beaver State Fling, Rose City Open, & the Calapooia Classic.
Each event will award the following number of invitations:
Open Men - 5, Open Women - 1, Advanced Men - 5, Advanced Women - 1
Masters
Masters players are welcome to play in the ORDGC, but there will be no age protected divisions. Masters will be eligible for invitations provided they play the same course at the same time as their non-protected division. For example: a Pro Master can qualify based on his score IF he played the same course at the same time as Open players. I will be asking TDs to make accommodations for this, but ultimately it will be up to them. Pro Masters are also welcome to try to qualify in the Open division or at the Last Chance Qualifier.
Last Chance Qualifier
On Sept 4th I will be at Trojan handing out a limited number of last chance invitations to the players who shoot the best rounds on that day. For $15/round you can play as many rounds as daylight will allow to try to card your best round. The best scores from that day will go home with an invitation.
More info to come...

Hagerty, you are the man!
For those in the know, this is the weekend after the Celebration (B Tier) and the weekend before Willamette Open (A tier), making September the HOTTEST month of disc golf in Oregon ever!
If I'm lucky, I'll be in Michigan playing the Discraft Great Lakes Open and getting to raid the Discraft factory :), but if I'm still in Oregon, you can bet you'll find my there whether I qualified or not!
Can't wait to see who qualifies and who is in the field!

I've been waiting for the details to this event! I love the idea! Making a State Championship "really" mean something!
I can hear it now........."In the Advanced division, taking the Oregon State tittle to Olympia, Washington, CHRIS GILBERTS" "hooray, cheer, hooray" " And Second place also from Washington....Mr. Eric Lund" "cheer. hooray, cheer"!

I am sure this is the most ignorant question but, to qualify a person must play Pro, Advanced,Or Masters divisions only? In other words, I can not qualify by playing Advanced Masters?
I know, why even ask> Just hoping.

Just like Pro Masters, if Advanced Masters are playing the same course at the same time as advanced players you can use your overall score to qualify.

Please, for purposes of calendar accuracy, personal planning etc, clarify:
Will this be a 2-day event as stated in the OP?

if there are no adv. or pro masters division or invites...why would we want to qualify or participate...it looks like a state champ tourney for OPEN and ADVANCED players...sounds like good idea for those players...

Well, you could look at it like that... or you can look at it like this: There are Advanced Masters and Pro Masters who can compete in their non-age protected divisions, but simply choose not to. I gave them an option to do so rather than just shutting them out completely.
Case in point: Camo Mike. Camo Mike is a great player and on a good day he could give ANY Open player a run for his money.
Want a little proof? Check out the round ratings for round 2? Nanook Open (http://www.pdga.com/tournament-results?TournID=9738&year=2010&include_ratings=1#Masters)
Look at the laundry list of players he beat that round. Its like a who's who of NW Disc Golf awesomeness.
*** EDIT ***
By the way, I just looked at the results from the Incredibowl. If that event had been a qualifier YOU would have qualified. So there!

- Jeff I agree there are masters that can compete in the adv. and open divisions..a few...but even fewer would have a shot at winning an ODGC...I think its great you are letting us play if we want...but I would still have to consider this an ODGC for ADV. and OPEN players as those are the divisions you will be recognizing and crowning STATE CHAMPION....and I doubt taking 1st in a 4 man division in a Mt. golf tourney qualifies me to take on the best adv.players in the state...at trojan...in its most difficult layout...I commend you on settin this up though...I think there should be a state champ every year ....in every division:trophy::seeya:

It wasn't your win in Adv Masters that would have gotten you the invite, it was the fact that your score would have tied you for 4th overall in Advanced.
Another issue I had to deal with was this one... Do I have 76 players spread out over 16 divisions or do I have 4 very tough divisions? I feel as though whoever wins this event in their division will have truly accomplished something special by playing against the very best in their division.

Jeff,
Kudos on getting this going.
It's been a loooooooooooong time coming.
Maybe next year we can have a pro master division or maybe even a grandmaster, which is something other 'State Championships' honor.
Also, as many golfers as this state has perhaps use more courses and have a bigger field.
36 open doesn't seem like very many to compete for something so prestigious.
I do like the idea of "capping" divisions.
Good job and good luck.

I'm sure I will learn a lot from the experience this year. For instance, I will be able to determine exactly how long the rounds will play using the Par 60 layout, and whether or not tee times would allow me to add even more players. I'd love to be able to have even more players, but not if it comes at the cost of the quality of the event.
Cheers,
Jeff

Yeah, you'll find out who was registered at the end of the event when they find out they qualified... or are you just trying to determine who you have to beat?
Actually, a few people have asked me for a pre-registration list, but I'm honestly not sure I am going to post one. My initial feeling is: If you want to play in the event, throw yer ten bucks down and let er rip.
I do believe the interest will continue to grow after the first couple of events, so these first two events (M3PO & GNO) might be the best ones to try to qualify.

I would love to throw down for this and try and qualify, but I am just not sure I can fit this event into my schedule. September is so crazy I am already committed to the Eugene Celebration on the 11th & 12th, the Willamette Open on the 25th, Hab Rec on Oct. 2nd, so if I qualified and played in the ORDGC that would be four weekends in a row of tournaments. Not sure I can comit to that. There is just too many things to choose from a blessing and a curse at the same time. :(:) We just need at least one more month of summer. Can't they just add one we could call it Disctober. :yay:

Hello All,
Just a little reminder that the Rose City Open is an Oregon Disc Golf Championships qualifier event. If you are interested in trying to qualify be sure to register prior to starting your first round. This is going to be an amazing event... don't miss out!
I just uploaded the current Rose City Open players list HERE (http://www.pdga.com/tournament-results?TournID=10167)and added notes to show who has already qualified for the ORDGC. (IE: You don't have to beat those guys.)
Also, I would really love to see more ladies trying to qualify for this event. I saved a number of slots for the ladies. I would really hate to see them go unused.
Jeff
Note: I'm still not going to tell you who is registered to qualify at this event... so don't bother asking :)

This was HUGE hurdle for the event and I am pleased beyond words.

Thanks for attaching that, Blang. That is a SICK layout. It will probably eat me for lunch, but I feel like I just qualified for (and entered) my own local USDGC! Except that the roughs and OBs will be far more punishing! Those multi-shot holes will be sheer joy (agony) to play! As Searles put it best: "Par 4s and 5s: the future of disc golf!" After the Calapooia Classic the ONLY way to qualify for the ORDGC will be at the last chance qualifier at Trojan on Sept 4th. You can register to qualify at the Calapooia Classic at the STUMPTOWN STORE (http://www.stumptowndiscgolf.org/store/ordgc_q).

I don't know about you, but I'm getting really pumped up for this event. Registrations are starting to roll in and all of the preparations have been going great. I've ordered all of our players pack gear, and I've arranged to have a food vendor on-site for the weekend so you won't need to drive to town unless you want to.
I have asked Bob Cabal to be our volunteer coordinator and I've also arranged to have Disc-Van-Go to provide a free shuttle service for the first 10 volunteers who sign up. The shuttle will leave Lloyd Center at 7:00am and arrive at the course around 8:00am each day. So if you know of any potential volunteers please have them contact Bob Cabal via PM. Also, anyone who volunteers one full day will get the 1st half of the AM players pack, and anyone who volunteers two days will receive the entire players pack. More information about volunteering can be found HERE (http://www.nwdiscgolfnews.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5450).
I would also like to thank Gawain Stern, Teresa Sassypants and Dan Carpenter for sponsoring a tee sign when they registered for the event. Each and every sponsor of the event helps to make it that even much better. So, thank you again. You guys are awesome.

Hello Everyone,
We're getting closer and closer, and I can't wait! I just dropped out of the Eugene Celebration, so I would have an extra weekend to get out to Trojan and do some additional preparation on the course. I haven't missed a Celebration since I started playing, so you gotta know I am serious about this! The bottom line is: I want this place looking top notch for you guys.
I've arranged to have Tim the Sausage Guy out at the course both days, so there will be food and drink on site to purchase if you get hungry. Although I've already received several items for the players packs, I did just track my Innova shipment containing players pack discs, and UPS tells me the shipment will be delivered to me today. I'm sure they will look awesome. Next Adventure hasd also agreed to provide a few additional items for the players packs, so things are looking good.
Once again I would also like to thank Mike Rideout, Dan Carpenter, Gawain Stern & Teresa Trueba who generously sponsored a tee sign when they were completing the registration process. Tim the Sausage Guy also stepped up for a tee sign as well. Remember, everyone who helps sponsor the event is helping to make it that much better. So, thank you again.
Ok... now we have to get down to business...
Remember, if you're still getting these emails it is because you still have not registered online. The Last Chance Qualifier is approaching rapidly and I still have 23 players who qualified for the event, but have yet to register online or make any arrangements with me. I really don't want to be giving away people's spots at the last chance qualifier, so if you did qualify get over to the Stumptown Store and complete your 2010 ORDGC Registration (http://www.stumptowndiscgolf.org/store/ORDGC). You are running out of time! Trust me... you do not want to miss this one! You only have one week to either sign up online or contact me to make other arrangements. Please don't make me give away your spot to someone at the last chance qualifier.
Also, if you did qualify, and have since discovered you will be unable to play... please let me know ASAP. It would be very helpful to know if you don't plan on registering.
Lastly, a lot of people have been asking me if the course will be set up ahead of time and the answer to that question is yes... and no. The only day I expect the complete course to be playable is the Friday before the event. I am not going to be placing any temporary baskets until Friday, Sept 17th, but I will try to get them out as early as possible. After all, thats the only day I'll be able to play the course myself :)
The following is a list of qualified players who have yet to register:

I just dropped out of the Eugene Celebration,
:angry::confused::angry::confused::(:mad::(:mad:
The schedule of tourneys this year was a real biatch and it just didn't lend itself to much free time just before the ORDGC for us to get the course looking its best in time for the tourney. It kills me to miss one of my favorite tourneys of the year, but I think that the sacrifice is worth it.:pirate:

Hello Everyone,
Ok... We are getting down to the wire... There are only 48 hours remaining to register.
Remember, if you're still getting these emails it is because you still have not registered online. The Last Chance Qualifier is approaching rapidly and I still have 21 players who qualified for the ORDGC, but have yet to register online or make any arrangements with me. I really don't want to be giving away people's spots at the last chance qualifier, so if you did qualify get over to the Stumptown Store and complete your 2010 ORDGC Registration (http://www.stumptowndiscgolf.org/store/ORDGC). rubber cleats may come in handy if it really gets to raining, especially with the temp tee pads and log fairways requiring power shots from the fairway.

Finished a complete round today, no rain, maybe a slight drizzle a few times but never felt it. Was dry and calm with a slight breeze half the time, awesome day to play there I'll tell ya! I'll go trough the holes and state my score with a few questions that can be answered now instead of later maybe?
Started at Hole 7, wasn't too sure where the teepad was but judging from the map, I played from the 2 things in the ground by the road, the water on the right side is long, threw a force about 350 and barely made it over by about 10 feet. Got a 3 on this easy.
Hole 8 - if the teepad is the cement pathway above the steps where there is a white line faded then super, only question is if the grass and bushes surrounding the fenced island ob or not? Put a squall and a rogue inside the circle with my valk being 3 feet short of the fence. No basket but was in the middle almost so bird here...
Hole 9 - this is a normal hole with no modifications, par 3
Hole 10 - will the path about 40 feet from the water be OB? If so, this will be a score killer since the water is half the fairway with a narrow grass fairway all the way around, tough to measure distance and accuracy on this one. Tough Par 3 here if Path is OB.
Hole 11 - Normal hole here, but par 3 or 4? Saved a 3 on this one with a 50 foot putt, this hole is 500 feet i'm sure.
Hole 12 - Normal hole here, par 3
Hole 13 - Normal hole here, but sadly I threw a 2nd shot on this one for fun with a special edition untagged used gazelle and it took a bad skip and barely made it into the water about 3/4ths of the way down, nooooooo, disc victim #1 here. Par 3
Hole 14 - Normal hole here, felt like going for it but wussed out at the last minute and played it safe on the left side of the fairway. Par 3
Hole 15 - wasn't sure if we are using the normal tee pad or using a temp one farther back? Used the normal tee pad and barely aced this with a wraith on the skip, probably 1-2 feet off as the putt was an easy 12 footer coming back for bird.
Hole 16 - this is insane... purely insane, tough to measure distance over the water, are we able to lay up on the right side behind hole 15? Is the teepad the same area for the normal short hole going over the water to that basket right there? I birded the short hole right there with an aftershock and only threw a pro boss about 50-75 short of the teepad for the next hole, was nervous to try to go for it farther down and lose a disc so just accepted the first shot and ended up struggling to get down the fairway with a 6! Is this par 4 or 5?
Hole 17 - put a viking within 15 feet of the normal pin and put a rogue anny past the 3rd tree and probably was inside 30-40 for the eagle putt but we'll count this as a birdie 4? if this hole is a par 5, which I believe it is, accurate placement of the 1st shot around 250-300 down the first fairway and a 300 anny to the trees or to the right of them will get you a shot at 3 and an easy 4...
Hole 18 - not too sure where the teepad was so used the path to the horseshoe pit area, par 3.
Hole 1 - hoping the volleyball net is down by saturday, or that will be a real good shot killer for some. I love this hole, gotta place it somewhere good around 325-350 straight without going too short or too long, then throw over some water to a "mowed pennisula", this basket has been moved back since the last time i been here. Par 4 here I am sure?
Hole 2 - I like this one, great job extending this back out on to the pennsula for a great view of the course. Teeshots for this will be tricky with the slope on the left and the short side on the right, just threw a wraith about 275 up the middle and took the easy par 3, lot of people will go for this one...
Hole 3 - the map looks like the basket will be moved over to the island next to the current fairway for a longer pin placement? Either way, ace run on the normal hole here for easy bird.
Hole 4 - teepad next to the road behind that one big tree sitting there by railroad tracks? Threw a nuke 400+, parked the buzzz for a 3, if this is a par 4 then yeahhh baby birdie... since the hole is 500+
Hole 5 - Definitely a par 4, a nice 300 footer through the trees then a 2nd shot around over the road probably will get you near for a birdie 3, like I did and birdie 3 here, will that short basket be moved? Can imagine a few discs hitting this black basket.
Hole 6 - Guessed the teepad from the map, definitely a nice hole here, par 4, teeshot here was a little short, got out my trusty 2nd run teerex, threw an anny on it and it just flew straight forever on a voyage to discover the loch ness monster in the deep of trojan! NOOOOOOOOOO why did I throw that disc! Fudge me! darn it, last hole and i had to do that dumb axx move... a teeshot with a straight to anny 300-350 can put you within 300-350 of the basket but with more than 150-200 of water, most people will lay up close the ridge and shoot a 200-225 footer to the basket for par. This is going to be the hardest par 4 unless 16 turns out to be a par 4...
wonderful day for me with a 59 but am sure that a few teepads were in different locations. Great use of the property for this layout! Hope the weather was as good as it was today... see y'all saturday and hopefully someone finds 1 of my discs *praying*

Here are most of your answers I think:
Hole 1: Is a Par 4.
Hole 8: Once you cross the road anything not inside the fence is OB and you move to the drop zone with penalty.
Hole 10: Path and over is OB.
Hole 15: Teepad is back about 80 feet.
Hole 16: Is a par 5. And yes, it is HARD, but if you play it safely it's easier.
Hole 17: Is a par 4. Good par though.

Alright sounds good, wish hole 17 was par 5 cuz getting a birdie 3 here is going to be insanely ridiculous... :bricks:
I'll ask more questions that were lost in the above passage...
Hole 3 - Map shows longer pin placement?
Hole 16 - can lay up on the right side or restricted to the left side where the basket is?
Am sure the volleyball net and hole 5 basket will be moved out of the way...
Super props to course preperation... Scores are going to be out of whack for sure!
Holes 1, 6, and 8 are my top 3 holes pre tournament wise... heh... I predict holes 8, 10, 16 and 17 will have the biggest standard deviations in scores...

Hole 17: I think this plays easier if you throw it a bit shorter off the tee to get a better angle at the green.
Hole 3: Yes, basket will belonger, and on the "island".
Hole 16: Drive must land on the basket side to be considered in bounds.
Volleyball Net & all unused baskets will be removed provided the locks aren't stuck. I'll know tomorrow.

I put 3 DX Destroyers and 1 Pro Katana into the water that never came back. I threw my 2nd shot (X-Tracker) on hole 1 into the water just short of the peninsula but was able to use Wayne's handy dandy contraption to get it back. (2 ten foot polls ducktaped together with a fishing net ducktaped to the end)
Recap:
Red DX Destroyer on Hole 6: 2nd shot too low and weak, never made the other side of the water. Ruined a great drive that left me with a clean look at the basket...
White Pro Katana on Hole 10: 1st drive, no flex 50-75' short of the bank in a straight line to the basket.
White DX Destroyer on Hole 14: 1st drive out onto peninsula but too much anny and it is still floating in the channel...
White DX Destroyer on Hole 17: 2nd shot anny came back over the sign and just missed the little tuft of grass maybe 10' from the bank.

Whoever the dude was that was in the water on 15 yesterday after the 2nd round picking out discs I think he was not part of the tournament, and just kept the 8 or so disc that he picked out. He came running by TC, and I checked to see if my star blue wraith was one of them, and I said to him "you are going to turn those in right?" he said yes, but kept running by so I yelled "hey you need to turn those in", and he just kept running towards the parking lot. Dang sorry I wish I would have just took those from him, and turned them in myself. I hope karma comes back and bites him hard.

And although i choked hard with my judgement in the 3rd round, the ratings say I did good. I loved the par 4 holes. This was a great layout to play to really challenge your skills with throwing discs. I swam the channel between tourney 16 and 14 and found 8 discs. Gave 2 discs to Kirk Mcallister and the rest to tourney central. Lost 1 disc the first 2 rounds and then 3 in the 3rd round... Great fun all around.. Sexton gave Dion a run for his money although he almost did catch him on the last hole... good drama to have...

Chris makes a very good point here. This course was a bruiser, especially so for the ladies, and Saturday afternoons weather was trying to say the very least, but not a single one of the ladies DNF'd. Every single one of them finished the event. The same cannot be said for the boys.
Well done ladies. You all rock.

So much OB, so little time.
Thanks to Jeff for running a great tournament, and all the volunteers for all their help spotting. My only regret is following any schedules posted online for day two. Missed my first hole. First time ever for me, missing a tee time I think. Just wondering when the schedule change was announced. I was at the players meetings on the first day...?

No problem buddy. It would have been nice to see that last round reflect how well I finished in my ratings (sans the first hole 8), but alas one's own assessments/delusions are far more important than any rating one could get from others. Thanks for a great tourney. I will be busting my butt to qualify for this disc golf test every year it exists. Congrats to all the winners!

This was a tourney for the best disc golfers in the state to be tested against the hardest course in the state. You had earn your way into this tourney to be invited to compete, so we didn't make it easy.
So a few came up wanting in the final tally, big whup. The weather sure didn't do us any favors, and when you add that on top of a mentally draining round with the prospect of leaving most of your bag in the water, some chose the better part of valor and decided against continuing...
It was so hard that I almost quit my casual round Friday afternoon...3 different times during the round...and I worked to help make the course!:bricks:

Yeah I remember, I was commenting on the "Us Ladies" part, implying plural. While there are currently 0 (less than singular) Pro ladies signed up for the first A tier in the state since the BSF.
Why the pro field isn't full is beyond me. Oh well...Just more money and goodies and fun times to split amonst the rest of us :)

Okay, now back to the ORDGC
What a tournament. Thank you so much Jeff for putting this entire thing together. Thanks for all of your hard work, for an awesome players pack (that full color Buzz with the course lay out on it is sick!!), an amazing course, and a good AM payout.
I don't think that I've ever seen a course look better for a tournament then Trojan looked this weekend. Even in the rain Saturday afternoon, after getting beaten up by it all day long and having it swallow up some of my plastic, you couldn't help but look around and just smile at how good the course looked.
To everyone that helped get that course ready... THANK YOU!!!!!!!
Also, thanks to all of the spotters as well. I've been to a number of tournaments that had spotters that didn't pay attention and were just out there to hang out and talk to people. My experience this week, I saw spotters running to spot discs, searching through bushes to find discs, and even laying on there stomachs trying to fish plastic out of the water for the players. Huge THANKS to all the spotters, you all rocked!!!!
Amazing course, the 3 most challenging rounds I've ever played. Equally amazing competition. What a great weekend!
I wish I would have snapped more pictures but I had to concentrate on not throwing in the water so I finally put my camera away. Here are a few shots from Saturday morning if anyone wants to see.

I couldn't agree more about the spotters. I'm just plain tickled pink over the job they did for me. What's most impressive is that they did it under some of the worst tournament weather conditions I've seen. Not just one day but came back out and did it again the next day. Thanks to everyone involved!

Yes we did work hard, and not because of a players pack .I do it to make the players happy and to represent the sport in a positive way and also to set example to others watching so that they might want to do the same with no expectations on what they will get. It makes me proud to help others so that one day they might do the same for me. Once again this was a outstanding tournament and by far the hardest course I've seen and played, to the players and staff thank you for your comments and and work you have all have done:cheerleader::rockon::yay::cheers:
