View Full Version : Announcing the 2010 Washington State Series
WSS10 Info
January 11th, 2010, 10:08 AM
For those that are unaware, there have been ongoing private discussions in regards to the revitalization of the Washington State Series. It is our pleasure to announce that the Series will be taking place this year, under a new leadership staff.
Not all of the details have been hammered out yet, but any posts made under this account can be considered to be official news, and information will be released as it is finalized. That being said, there are a few things that can be said for certain.
There are about a dozen people involved in the discussions, and the designated positions for the series staff are as follows:
Mike Rideout - Coordinator
Wobbly Bob Perrewe - Pointskeeper
Paul Wright - Treasurer
Scot More - Fundraising
Chris Gilberts - Basket Toss Promotions
Tim Coye - Information Contact
In terms of the events, the dates are not, as of yet, finalized, but the series will consist of 6 regular tournaments, and an additional final tournament at the end of the series. Here is a list of the tournaments and their Tournament Directors as of now. If you have questions about specific events, please contact the individual TDs.
Windy River Open, Kennewick, WA - Kaleb Ralph, TD
Kitsap Peninsula (tournament as yet unnamed), Bremerton, WA - Paul Wright, TD
Lilac City Open, Spokane, WA - Wobbly Bob Perrewe & Gordy Crafts, TDs
Lakewood Open (possibly including SeaTac), Seattle, WA - Eric Edgerton & Tim Coye, TDs
White River Open (possibly including Riverside), Auburn, WA - Tom Bontempo, TD
Ft. Steilacoom (tournament as yet unnamed), Tacoma, WA - Ed Munoz, TD
WSS Finals (separate venue from LCO), Spokane, WA - Wobbly Bob Perrewe & Gordy Crafts, TDs
All of the series events will be PDGA B-tier events, and each event will take $3 per head to go to the series kitty. To qualify, players will need to play 4 of the 6 events. The Finals event will not be limited to qualifiers only, but qualifiers shall be given priority registration.
More details will be posted later as they become available, but if you have specific questions regarding the series, ask them here or email wss10info@gmail.com.
We're looking forward to a fantastic year of Washington Disc Golf!
Thanks,
The WSS Staff

What's the separate venue for the WSS Finals? Doesn't the LCO pretty much exhaust every course in Spokane?
I'd like to see SeaTac included with Lakewood, (and Riverside with White River) that would keep the multi-course theme 100%
Sounds like there's a solid team to take care o bidness. Not too sure about that Bob Perrewe guy, I've heard he's a little *wobbly*.
Thanks guys!

Awesome! would you mind posting APPROXIMATE dates for each event? Even if they are only APPROXIMATE. I want to calendar stuff right away so I can make a couple of the WA events again this year.
Thanks neighbor

Does anyone know what happened to the final 2009 series results? That information was promised to be posted at some point at the 09 awards ceremony but to my knowledge have not.

I can understand you guys being a little bummed about the absence of ASC, BUT, we should all be stoked on the addition of the Kitsap Peninsula into the series. Two awesome courses, a world champ at the helm, and a great club presence, I think it'll be a superb event.

I noticed that too; bummer, only tourney I've played in in years and it was a hoot. Or maybe it's happening, just not part of the series?

The NAD course is 2 minutes from my house JMan! Spencer will need someone to get pizza with while we get some local Sushi!
Would be good to see some Oregon boys & girls up in my neck of the woods.
The trip to Walla Walla has always been a fun Father/Son trip, as well as a great Tourney, nice Peeps and great Sushi. It'll be back and so will we!
Can't wait to see some dates.....:whistler:

The final nine has two main purposes:
1) Allow more time for the TD to prepare for the award ceremony.
2) Showcase the players that are playing the best in the tournament.
That being said, I think that the final nine should feature four players with the best overall scores. The scores would not be included in the overall tournament scores. The four players would be playing for a predetermined prize or a "skins" game. This format would allow more high risk shots that would be more entertaining to the gallery.
Another option to speed up the final nine would be to reduce the number of holes played. Maybe a final five. Choose a set of holes that flow good from tournament central and have high scoring deviations.
The "Final" should not take longer that an hour to complete.

I like the final nine as part of the total tournament score. Watching the best players compete against each other with the whole weekend on the line is much more entertaining to me than watching a relatively pressure free skins game.

I can see arguments either way. I kind of like the idea of the skins round though, since there's more incentive for the players to go for the big birdie rather than the safe par. Either way though, I support the final 9 for just the top 4 anyway, it's cool to have the huge gallery watching the best players of the weekend.
Just as an FYI though, how TDs decide to handle final 9's and such are entirely up to them this year. The series is going to be very hands off in terms of regulations in the events, giving the TDs the freedom to run their events the way they want.

Disclaimer or is this just code for inconsistent?
The 9 skins is a lot more fun! No lay ups here! CSI paid almost as much in skins as 3rd cash in the tourney.

Who says the nines have to be consistant? If the players know what's going on as far as how many holes or extra incentives why should each event ne the same. Mix it up a bit. I do like the idea of having only 4 to the finals and a chance to play for skins is a bonus for sure. But every event doesn't need to be the same. Safari nines are the shnit.

In my experience with Final 9's and Skins matches I've found two things. Its best to keep them seperate, and only the top four (or final card if you were doing fivesomes) should play.

It's not going to happen this year, as we've already committed to Spokane. There is definetly interest from the coordinators to involve FlippenZ in the future.
Personaly, I had a great time last year and will do my best to make it this year also.

WA State Series rotation
March No event
April 17-18 Windy River (Originally in Mid March)
May 2nd weekend Kitsap Courses
June 5-6 LCO
July 24-25 Lamewood (Originally in late June)
August 14-15 Stelli
Sept 4-6 White River
Sept 25-26 Final Spokane
Now this is all good except the Stellicoom event is the weekend before Jet Wash.
As somone who was at the time involved with the Series planning "...because JWO was not going to be part of the series it would have at least a two week buffer before any other series event". Mike was elected Coord. by one vote (Guys) with this stipulation.
Now the series is recanting that position by stuffing 3 events in 6 weeks. Stelli could easly be played in March, late June. Oh, thats right! Mike is running FSO so he wants golfers jones-ing for play. Thats why the extended time frame. Clever Mike, Clever!
I personally think this is crap!!!
Guy has so much sweat equity at SeaTac and the series could give a shit about him or his efforts. i bet the next revelation will be the Pooled Combo of Tac and Lamewood. Then they can get Guy to prep the course for them too.

I like LaKewood too, its a great course and tournament.
I don't have anything against playing multiple weekends in a row. All 3 tournies are still going to fill and be good tounraments. It would be nice to have a weekend off, but to me it doesn't really matter.

Doesn't the LCO pretty much exhaust every course in Spokane?
There are three 18 hole courses at Four Mound, and LCO uses the 27 hole Jumanji layout that borrows holes from all three.
We might also have our new course at People's Park put in at some point this year, but I doubt it would be included in the LCO and certainly not the City Cup Four Mound finals.

Agreed. It's the 3rd month of the year now. I have stalled submitting my vacation request at work as long as I can, but I am feeling pressure to submit it. If the WA dates are not announced firmly soon, I will simply have to skip the WA Series events. I hope the firm dates are published very soon.
LJ Jubner
March 3rd, 2010, 09:09 AM
Thats understandable G. The series as a whole will suffer(fortunately some events have published dates) because of the loss of players like you. At least this give CSI, JWO and Aquafist a chance. If not we always have Celebration.
I am thinking of running something at Twin Rivers to coincide with the Arlington Fly In in early July
Crap! no mystery left now.
