Looks like this will be the first sanctioned event of the year for all of us here in the NW, should be a good time with a good turnout!

Will the Canyon course be played and if so, will the baskets be retrofitted with the new chains yet?

Should be done by then. Starting to work on them today, and if I don't get finished by the tournament I will simply temporarily switch out the remaining baskets with those on the Meadow Ridge course.

It's far from instant (just ask Cindy), but you should be able to sign up as a member without a number. You may have to do it in person or through the mail if the online form won't let you (on the plus side, this will save you another $3.00).

Yay it took FOREVER to get my packet, but I got my number within a week. You should be able to just write in the comment box on the registration page that you have signed up, and are just waiting for your number. You should have an email confirmation within a week after signing up from the PDGA with you number, and then you can just email Tassia your number when you get it. Come to think of it last years Slosh at Horning's was my first PDGA tournament, and I did exactly that because I did not have my number yet.

No, you should not be worried. The list does not get updated automatically. The TD has to manually upload the list to the PDGA. This typically happens every few days, depending on how much free time the TD has.

Announcing a change. After much consideration and prodding, it seems as though we will be hosting the Pros second round at the Meadow Ridge Course. All of us AMs will still be on the Canyon Course for the second round, but when you're done, feel free to run over and watch the pros huck the new course. It's gonna be awesome.

I'm in the process of making trophies at the moment and all I can say is that I'm covered in glitter.

Sigh. Not sure if I should laugh or cry. I've never even walked that course and not sure I will be able to before the tourney. Guess I better try and find time to get out there and see it. At least I'll get to see some great pros play on it.. LOL. I think those 1000 rated players are just fearful of the Breeze on the Canyon course. :)

Meadow Ridge is super tricky... but just keep in mind that it's almost like any other course... just keep it in the middle, take dead aim, don't hit trees off your drives... if you're good enough to play pro, I'm sure you'll do just fine...;)

Due to the amount of interest that this tournament has generated, we will be opening more spots and changing who is playing what course. The changes are below:

Pros will be playing the Meadow Ridge Course twice.

Ams will be playing the Canyon Course twice.

Sign up fast. The spots are going quick.

good news! I talked with Bob on Sunday and it looks like all of the Canyon baskets will be set up with the new chain configuration before the Hoedown. He did say it is a tremendous undertaking and that it is taking up alot of his time.
Thanks Bob for working so hard.
I also saw him playing a little golf on Sunday. He threw a mean Thumber on 15. then his approach on 18 was this sweet forehand to the basket. Way to go Bob. It is great to see you taking a walk and throwing stuff in your own woods. You deserve it.

Meadow Ridge twice. Double sigh. Guess I know where I'll be this Sunday for sure. Hopefully it will be lovin' the Z-Breeze.

I recommend that you inform all that are registered in some way other than on this forum. If you have email addresses I'd email them ASAP so that they can prepare. This is good cause more should get to play, but I for one would have been mildly annoyed at the change if I did not find out till the day of the tourney. I do see that the registration page is updated with the info but that is not helpful for those already signed up.

I'm looking forward to the tourney. First PDGA event I've been able to play in over a year I think... and perhaps only 1 of 2 that I'll do this year.

It would be cool if the Pro final round was staggered to start a little later than the ams final round so us amoochers could watch them throw a few holes. Unless you think a final 9 could happen before dark, but they would have to start right at 8:30 and have a short lunch if a final 9 were to happen. don't know how that would go over. Just want to see the big dogs play that course if possible. or use the Cali course on the Highlands as a final 9? just thinking.

Even if we start at the same time, the AMs should finish the Canyon before the Pros finish the Ridge. There should be enough time to dry your tears, grab a beer, and head over to watch the last few holes.

Hey Kent,

I am going to help Tassia on the pro side of the event and I don't think we can afford to run the Pro's later then their expected round times. There will not be a final 9 but that would be fun! I expect the Pro rounds to take longer than the Am rounds so I would also expect that the Am's may start their second round before the Pro's start their rounds. This coupled with the reduced time to play the canyon course could give you a chance to catch maybe 6-9 holes on the Meadow Course.

Am's and Pro's should thank Tassia and Bob for making changes on the Fly for this event. Now there will be a full course of Am's on the Canyon Course(72) and a healthy dose of Pro's on the Meadow Course! I Personally think this is a big undertaking for a first time TD but I know Tassia will knock it out of the Park with the help of Stumptown!

Casual Water: Bodies of water other than those that have been specifically designated by the director prior to the start of the round as out-of-bounds.

Which brings up a question for the TD: The water on 18 - Casual?

Tassi, I'll be gone this weekend, I've got a booth at the bridal show in Portland (because of the weddings here), but I can mark out the drop zones for both 18 on Canyon and 16 on Meadow if you want me to next week. I think those two will be the crucial ones.

As far as other OBs, I should have the new signs in sometime next week for the Canyon, and that will show the OBs on Hole 1 and 18. On 1 it is the fence line.

Whether or not someone accepted cash no longer matters at all. The rule is based on ratings now, and Carl's rating is such that he can play pro or advanced masters.

Thanks. So, does this assume that once a person has played in a pro event regardless if they took cash or scrip, then they are considered a Pro from then on and must be a 935 or less to play AM in the future?

In other words, any 936 or above from now on, if they ever play in a PDGA sanctioned event as a Pro then they can never go back to AM unless their rating drops below 935?
So, don't go Pro unless you really mean to stay there? That makes plenty of sense to me. I like it. I also like the suggested Pro minimum rating of 970. That makes sense too.
It really pushes the top end of each AM division to a new level. Should make the advanced and Intermediate fields very competive.

2.4 Pros Playing Am

A. Pros rated less than 970 may now compete in Amateur divisions offered at PDGA A, B, and C Tier events, for which they qualify based on player rating, age, and gender.

(1) Pro Men and Women
• < 970 can play Advanced (MA1)
• < 935 can play Intermediate (MA2)
• < 935 can also play Advanced Master (MM1) if they are of Masters age
• < 900 can play Recreational (MA3)
• < 900 can also play Advanced Grandmaster (MG1) if they are of Grandmasters age
• < 850 can play Novice (MA4)

(2) Pro Women only
• < 850 can play Advanced Women (FW1)
• < 800 can play Intermediate Women (FW2)
• < 750 can play Recreational Women (FW3)

B. Players are awarded Amateur points for their performance but these points are not eligible for year-end awards or Worlds invitations.

player is automatically re-classified as Pro when the player has accepted cash while competing in a Pro division.

So I think it is only after a Pro has accepted cash that they can no longer play in Adv Master (unless they drop to 934 or less).

Then Carl would not be eligible for Adv Master by virtue of his 935 rating IF he has ever accepted cash, since he is still registered with the PDGA as a Pro.

BOOOOO! I tried to sign Jamie and I up for this tournament and got the "out of stock" message from the Stumptown site. Sent a PM to the TD informing her about this and asking that she save a place for Jamie and I - only to find out that the tournament is now full despite the fact that only 61 Ams were signed up at this time.

Now we have the option of having Jamie only play which I think is simply BS.

Could it be that Carson is simply afraid of the competition? Seems to me that this should be rectified to allow space for Jamie and I since we attempted to sign up while there was supposedly still room.

Reading some of these last posts and then checking the registration list it appears to be well over 72 people. It looks like two courses are being used now. If that is correct then isn't their room for alot more people. I to would come play if I could pay day of. I checked last when it was at 68 people and thought that in two more days it would be full for sure. I had just paid for festivas and the wife said not untill payday. I didn't even check thinking it was full. Now I see 90 people on the pdga list and see that people need to practice the meadow. Seems more people could play then.

I don't think it has anything to do with Carson, Sam. If you were to sign up for Pro, I'd think there would be plenty of room-hence, Jaime having a spot and not you. AM field is full, that is clear.

I believe all Pro divisions are playing Meadow Ridge and all AM divisions playing the Canyon Course. Apparantly they must have 72 AMs signed up? Of course it's probably to late now but moving the Advanced division to the Meadow Ridge course would open up another 20 or so spots. Just saying.......it's pretty amazing that a winter tournament is filling up. Waaahoooo! That's good for everybody!

Sam,
The PDGA website is not updated every day. Tassia is the TD and she updates it when she can, remember this is her first event and it has a learning curve. Its quite possible that there were entries in the store account that did not get her way until later in the day and thus the PDGA site was not current. I hear there is now a wait list as well!

Others,
If you did not get in sorry but the registration has been open for about a month. If you could not pay until day of you could have contacted the TD and worked something out. It does not sound like that took place from your posts.

All,
The Pros are the only ones who will be playing this event on the Meadow Ridge course. Perhaps another event will see the advanced ams move over there but not this one.

Sam
January 18th, 2010, 07:15 PM
Possible... but that doesn't explain why I could not sign Jamie up. I tried to sign her up first. Seems the site was not set up properly - or the number of total entrants was not changed until later. Dunno...

I don't even think it is necessary that they've played in a pro event. If they've registered with the PDGA as a Pro, they're considered a pro.
Says here: http://www.pdga.com/rules/2-3-reclassification
player is automatically re-classified as Pro when the player has accepted cash while competing in a Pro division.
So I think it is only after a Pro has accepted cash that they can no longer play in Adv Master (unless they drop to 934 or less).

Hey Sam and everyone else.

#1 - I'd like to thank everyone for their understanding, since this is my first tournament that I've ever TDed. It's been a really exhausting experience and at the same time very exciting.

#2 - between trying to finish up this semester with my students, submit grades, cure a case of the shingles, have my computer crash, and transitioning the stumptown website, I haven't been updating the PDGA site as soon as the spots are sold. I've been doing it at my earliest convenience. When there were 61 spots according to the PDGA list, there may not have been that many actually left.

#3 - I apologize if anyone feels shorted. Originally, I was expecting a small tournament of about 50 players. We are now over 100 and have a waitlist of 15 people. This is amazing and it makes me really excited about the future of this sport.

Once again, thanks for all of your contribution and understanding. You guys are great and I'll try to keep you updated as much as I can. Now, to finish printing those score cards...

See you at the Hoedown.

Sam
January 19th, 2010, 12:34 PM
OK... can we get a wait list so we can see whether or not we should make other plans for Sunday?

It's not that I feel shorted. It is just unfortunate that we actually tried to sign up for this tournament - when there were still spots open for Jamie, at least - and we might end up missing the whole thing because the website was not updated to accommodate more than 72 players. Just disappointing that the powers that be did not have their stuff together to make getting into this tournament as easy as it should have been. That is all.

Thanks.

Also, what are the possibilities of adding a ghost group or two to get more people in? I know that there are two particularly shorter holes following long walk-outs on the Canyon Course (4-5 and 10-11) that would be ripe candidates for ghost groups. Something to consider?

TreeLove
January 19th, 2010, 01:41 PM
Last time I checked there were 54 baskets out there at Horning's. Even with foursomes and no ghost groups, that's 216 players.

I DO understand that it takes a LOT more than just a ton of baskets to host a good event for 216 players. I DO understand that more players inevitably means more work.

But there is a club running this event, isn't there? Or is it all on T-Party to run? Just using 2009 Stumptown bag tags as a rough gauge, there are at least 152 members in SDG...

Running a big event smoothly is all about delegation. The biggest mistake I kept repeating while running the 90-player Ice Bowls was NOT delegating enough tasks to other volunteers.

In general, players and clubs are very willing to volunteer. They often have their own busy schedules, so may only be able to contribute in obscure ways: printing score cards at night at home, for example (I have half a dozen laser printers, and would be more than willing).

Like many SDG members, I don't get to very many meetings. But I am very motivated to help with Stumptown efforts. Thing is, no one ever contacted me to ask me to do anything. That's how it is with volunteer help: people are willing, but you must actually nail them down, assign their tasks and timelines, and follow up regularly. In fact, the delegation IS the bulk of the work, once you have the volunteers to perform the actual tasks.

Too often, we directors try to do too much ourselves. We think "it will be too hard to explain", "I can't get in touch with so-and-so", "I can stuff 300 envelopes myself", etc., etc.., etc. This leads to PREMATURE TD BURNOUT, though they usually hold some great events before they collapse completely.

In summary, I offer my assistance to this event. And I hope that with my assistance, and the aid of others who may step forward similarly, that this event could be expanded to accommodate all interested players.

Back to the topic, there are 54 baskets at Horning's. As Sam has pointed out, the key to making daylight is to keep the Ridge course "hot" at all times - schedule so that as soon as one pool finishes it, the next one starts. Pools playing shorter courses in the morning take their lunches earlier, when they finish round 1, and the pool playing Ridge in Rd 1 has lunch later, as the other pools start their round 2.

Examples:
216 players
DIV RD 1 LUNCH RD 2
PRO 8:30 Ridge 12:30 1:30 Canyon
ADV 8:30 Highland 11:00 12:30 Ridge
INT 8:30 Canyon 11:30 12:30 Highland

144 players:
DIV RD 1 LUNCH RD 2
ADV+PRO OPEN 8:30 Ridge 12:30 1:30 Canyon
INT/JR/MASTER/WOMEN 8:30 Canyon 11:30 12:30 Ridge

This all may be too little too late, but my offer extends to the next event, and so on. Gotta run, will talk more later.

While I appreciate the option, it's all good. If I cannot play the division I would like to play in, we will find something equally fun to do that day and be just as happy. I am sure the people that are in are going to have a splendid time and that is great for everyone.

You can show up day of and play pro there is room. To anybody else that wants to play pro there is room but we just would like a heads up if you are coming. You can contact Tassia or myself with your intentions. This will greatly help us be prepared in the morning!

Mike... any thoughts on how the pairings in the pro division will be determined? Will it be random or will it be by player rating? It's always been unclear to me if the PDGA has a standard for this or if it is up to the TDs. Thanks! I'm really looking forward to it.

Received a phone call from Tassia last night. Gibsons will be in attendance in our desired divisions.

Looking forward to it.

Sam responds:
This is correct and something that I would do at smaller tournaments. In fact, I have played Open at many events (Tour of Portland and other non-PDGA events) though it has admittedly been a while. Truthfully, I did get better and played better playing with people who were consistently better than me."

I am confused my friend. Is your chosen division in this "small tournament" Pro? It looks like you are signed up for Advanced Master. Either way, I look forward to catching up and who knows, you may even cash. Welcome to Club Crustie. The hazing is brutal. you gotta bring quaffers for everyone and play the entire first round left handed.

I do have a very large (I think 100 cup) coffee maker, if someone bring a few pounds early on Sunday we can brew it up, bring cream and sugar too. If this is going to work let me know so I can have it set up at the covered area where registration will be. BTW, registration will be the cover area by the lake that you walk by on the way to Meadow Ridge. If whoever does want to bring the coffee and is coming out Saturday to practice bring it then, it takes a good 45 minutes to percolate and that way I can get it started way early on Sunday morning.

Not going to be able to make it on short notice, but I'm glad there are so many people getting to play and that a few of them will be able to play the new course. Have fun folks....

All, I will have a fire pit up near registration and one in the field, I don't think I will have time to cut wood. Tassia, did you arrange this?

Thanks for all of your thanks, but I must extend my thanks to Gwillim, Mike and Steve. Stumptown Disc Golf Club has really been awesome. Thanks, you guys.

On a separate note, the bluegrass band that I had hoped would play is apparently sick. So, there will not be any music. If anyone wants to start a jam session during lunch or after the rounds, I'm not opposed.

For smaller tournaments I like the idea of random and the competition manual calls this out in section 1.6 http://www.pdga.com/files/documents/08CompetitionManual.pdf

For larger events I like the second method described in the competition manual.

Tassia is setting up the leader board and I believe she said random!

They are not the only ones. I think I have strep.

I'm still coming, though. I'm not crazy. Your bluegrass band is a bunch of slackers!

Don't worry, the speakers in my car play metal fairly loud. So...I guess we're covered for tunes.
