YEAHYAH!
I am partial to this one because I had run it the past few years. With Mike behind the wheel I am sure it is going to be better than anyone I had run. We are finalizing the courses and it is going to be a blast. The best news for this year is we are most likely going to have the course closed for us this year, as long as we get 70 players. Shouldn't be too difficult. 2 courses, carts, manicured fairways, good times.

So why is Intermediate being paid out "trophy only" ?

December 23rd, 2009, 12:24 AM
becuz much of the cash that will come in will be put to the use of the carts and greens fee's. heck i don't think there will be payouts for any divison
Toby Puttzinski
December 23rd, 2009, 01:38 AM
Actually, the flyer explains that $20 of each entry fee will go toward cart rental and greens fees(not including any other fees/overhead costs). Those in the intermediate division will be paying only $30, while advanced ($45) and pro ($60) will have paid in considerably more, and will obviously have payouts.
I imagine the trophies will be pretty nice, as Mike has a really good track record in my experience in regard to payouts/trophies.
TD Mike, why not charge $10 more for intermediate and have some pay-out in script? Wouldn't this help raise more funds?
REDFIVE
December 23rd, 2009, 02:51 AM
I am sure mike will clear this up officially.
With the players pack being the carts and greens fees at $20 a pop mike didn't want to make it too expensive for the intermediates. If you charge $40 for int and $45 for adv there is not much motivation for a top int player to move up or it gives an excuse for a decent adv player to move down. Mike will make it worth while. The experience of playing this type of course is what the event is really about.

We just put the final touches on the pro courses and they are pretty freakin' cool. The NW(front 9) course is a 13 hole par 53. The SE(back 9) course is a 13 hole par 51. Maps will be available soon making it easy to see OBs and hazards. The am courses will be mapped out soon also. The am courses will play a few strokes easier but the greens are very technical so they might not play all that much easier just shorter in some spots. I can't wait to get baskets out!
If you have a metal basket and have not been contacted by rideout and would like to let us use it please PM either myself or rideout. Thank you.

The pro courses are pretty much done and they are going to be fun. I used google maps to get hole lengths so they are as accurate as I could get them, surely not perfect but pretty close for use as a reference. The maps are very easy to read and should go public as soon as I hear back from rideout. All ob lines and hazards are clearly visible and straight forward. As it stands now the NW course is a 13 hole par 52 at 8945ft. Average hole length is 688ft. The SE course is a 13 hole par 51 at 8568ft. Ave hole length is 659ft. Together the courses are a par 103 at 17,513ft. Ave. Hole length is 674ft. Average hole width is much much smaller. There is a great mix of holes for sure. The smallest hole is a 210ft shot to an islandish green while the longest is a 1271ft monster of a shot that gives you options off the tee and keeps you thinking all the way to a green that is tucked behing rolling mounds scattered with bunkers and just behind the ob green, and of course you must flirt with the ob cart path and water hazards as you get toward the basket. Needless to say I like the layout much more than any course we have designed in the past. Greens are very fair but still tricky with great touch and placement needed to avoid landing ob. The am course should be finalized this Tuesday and a map and lengths will be posted as well. I would expect the ave hole length to be closer to 4 or 4fifty possibly pushing 5. I have a map for reference but we need to make sure the tees are flat and playable. Good times!

If the layout holds up the am courses look like this.
NW is a 13 hole par 50 at 6500ft ave hole length is 500.
SE is a 13 hole par 49 at 6404ft ave hole length is 493.
Together they are 26 holes par 99 at 12,904ft ave hole length is 496.

Many of the tournaments I throw are geared in the direction of having intermediate, novice, recreational, and junior divisions playing for “trophy only” awards. I try to keep the cost of entering these divisions as low as possible to make it more fun for them to enter the event and be able to compete. I feel that it is more important to keep these entries low and not make the extra funds from the scrip in order to keep the personal costs for these players down.
A lot of new players are not PDGA, so if they are playing intermediate they are still getting charged $40. If I added $10 to the entry fee in order to raise more money, then these intermediate players will be paying $50 to compete in a one-day C-tier as an intermediate. That doesn’t sound attractive to a lot of new players that just want to go out and see what the tournament scene is all about.
Advanced divisions will play from the am pads. Remember, these am pads do not make these holes easy; they simply make the hole a little shorter. Almost all of the difficulty will be found in the pin’s position.
There will not be any baskets in sand traps. There are a few cases where a basket will be about twenty feet from a sand trap, ob green, or ob path. Chris had to have one hole that is a little extreme, so on the 13th hole of the Southeast course you will find the basket at the top of a mound that is well guarded in the front by a very close sand trap, huge ob green in front of that, and a path on the backside of the mound. Of course, this is after about 1000 feet of fairway.
Kyle Sutherland was out there with us today to speak up about some of the am pads. He was quite helpful and he seemed convinced that the shorter tee pads did not take away from the shot.

We finalized the am courses and double checked the pro courses. As soon as I hear back from rideout I will make the maps available. I am hoping to get distances for the am courses done tonight so everything will be mapped and measured. The am courses play shorter but they are still very technical. I am very happy with what we have come up with. The course doesn't have many trees but we used what we had very well. There are many hills and mounds up around the green and in fairways in some spots, we tried to use these to our advantage. I still. Can't wait to get baskets out!

It's not the 13 172ft tee shots that worry me, it's the 13 172ft putts I'd have to make! Yeah, I'm really gonna go for it from over 150ft out with a few cases where a basket will be about twenty feet from a sand trap, ob green, or ob path. Thanks for the maps and the descriptions... looks like alot of fun! Maybe OB O'berto should jump on board with sponsorship, considering there's OB on every hole...
"Maps are way cool. Is there any way to zoom in on them?" Yes.
While having a long arm certainly helps a golfer on courses like these, there is alot of 'fairway' golf and course management to be done out there, especially with all of the ob's and bunkers.

Intestin wrapped meat digits,
Eric is right, throwing as hard as you can as many times as needed will give you more opportunity to take shots. It is not as hard as it seems. As in most courses it is an advantage to throw far but accuracy is more important. With OB on every hole throwing 420 into a pond will lose a stroke, a disc, and a bit of sanity. The average par is near 4 per hole so max power isn't necessary.

As someone who has seen the layouts for this year's courses, I can definitely say the Winter Flurry is going to be a fun challenge for players in all divisions, a unique treat (I'm thinking of the carts here), and a great tournament! Between the cart paths, bunkers, seasonal water and ball greens, you've got OB to contend with on every hole. Most tees and greens are strategically placed to create shaped fairways, and on several holes the 2nd or 3rd shot is the real tester.
In my honest opinion, these courses don't favor distance to any significant degree more than any other good, challenging course. Players who can throw 450+ feet might be tempted to unload, but unless they're good enough to shape that shot off the teepad and land in a fairway bounded with OB, their best option is going to be a more conservative, controlled shot. It's not as though this is 26 holes that are all wide open and between 400-500 feet, where every hole would be a potential birdie for big arms but a boring 3 for the rest of us... The emphasis at Sumner Meadows is on placement: weighing the risks and rewards to stay in bounds and set yourself up for the next shot.
Oh and Frankfurter Phalanges, after you follow that "view full size" link, you should be able to click on the map in the new window and have it magnify.

The maps turned out pretty cool. There are rolling hills, nothing too crazy, on every hole that the maps don't give justice. They are an added characteristic that we don't normally see and make up for the lack of trees in some spots. After you putt out on SE13 the view from the hill is awesome with all the baskets, make note.

I don't know that I will do it on the first but maybe a couple few days before the event I want to get some flags out. It isn't too hard to find your way around using the map. The tees will be the flattest spot near the tee marked on the map and the baskets will be near the arrows.
If anybody goes out to check the course please be respectful of the golfers that are out there, you are representing disc golf, be cool. Thanks.
I found some time today and played the nw course to the areas or objects near the pin positions. Stay in bounds and you should be ok. There are a couple few holes where your best shot is a mid off the tee and a driver to the pin, unless you want to be tough. Lots of decisions to be made, good times.

I will attempt to honor all requests for players that wish to play on someone’s card for the first round (as long as it doesn’t involve mixing divisions). For example, Nathan requested to have him and Kyle on the same card; this shouldn’t be a problem.
There is a lot of novelty that goes along with this event which makes it spendy. Because of this, I do want to ensure that it will be as fun as possible for the masses and worth the money. That being said, remember that this is a sanctioned event and PDGA rules will be enforced.
I will accept entries for every division. We will need four players to make a division. If your division doesn’t end up with four players, it will be your choice to change divisions or receive a cash refund.

i wanna say coming from 512. get onto 167. take the steward/8th st e. exit make a right off the ramp. and stay straight.. map quest tells me to go up tapps lake parkway. then make right off of park way then follow that road down to east valley hwy... now i know you can see the golf course from the road. and i think there is a driveway on the 8th st side of the course

The course is off of 8th. Pretty straight forward from 167.

Whoa, this probably should have been clairified a while ago, what about dry-fit jerseys, where do athletic shorts fall?? I'll bring a collered shirt just in case, but I don't know if every one will think to.
P.S. ALSO SO STOKED!!!!

Dan, I'm surprised you forgot to mention that an argyle pattern must be visible somewhere between the ankles and shoulders, and minimum 2 pieces of gold jewelry (teeth count).
Also any Open player whose tee shot doesn't make it past the Am pad must play the remainder of that hole as a "dink-out."

i just wish i could have finished my 2nd round. o i had a blast(well besides losing my super roc in the water to the right of nw 13 green) the weather added a bit more of a challenge to the course.. even thou the course needed no extra help. but my high light of the day was my 450+ 360 drive. now just if i could get my super roc back.
god dang i will miss that disc:angel:
will pay cash for its return...white super roc witha red x on it

The ratings for the event are skewed because it is as if the ams and pros played the same courses. Very inaccurate.

Yeah you could say that, you must really not like that 899 hangin beside your name. That will change soon though.

I would rather have the 899 because it would be dropped, now I'm stuck woth another 940 round. Loving inconsistant play.

The conditions were much improved for sunday. Nate and dion dominated the 23 hole layout with a near perfect 71 (-21). Dion had an ace on the second island hole on the SE course. Good times. Thanks to the hoardes of folks that came out.

Great fun all weekend! Scott Papa showed up just in time to take a photo of the ace throw, so that was cool. Thanks Mike and Chris for making it happen this weekend, always one of my favorite events on the year!

Mike, you ran a great show. Thank you very much for making this happen. I already have my 3rd place trophy on my wall. It's my 1st open trophy. Awesome tourney.
I hope we behaved enough to come back next year.
