Yeah, obviously :rolleyes2: we've got a difficult path ahead, but I still think its worth a try.
At least we get to play in there once a year now, whereas before I was told by golfers that there was absolutely no way the city was going to let me use the park for disc golf. Fortunately, I wasn't here long enough to let the naysayers (perhaps some in this very thread :whistler:) get me down.

I agree once a year is great! But it's during the winter when park use is somewhat lighter. Summer will be a whole different kettle of fish.
I still believe that an "all day, one round event" is the best way to raise funds/food/awareness for such a worth project.

I know that you (TD) are working on it.
You had an excellent booklet for us last year: the course, distances, map, layout, and such. Any hints about the new course?
Also, can we donate prizes for CTP's, Aces, shot-of-the-tournament, Award for rookie of the tournament, etc...?
cefire
December 10th, 2009, 10:38 PM
Yes, I'll have a booklet just like last year with the distances, map, layout, all OBs, etc. The new course will use essentially all of the holes from the old course minus 1, revisions to 1, and will add 7 new holes. I'll do a writeup just like last year to give everyone a preview of what to expect. I'm really excited about a few of the newer holes, a couple of just plain fun ones and a couple which will be really challenging I think.
Donations would be awesome, you all really impressed me last year with a lot of people chipping in. Sheila and I still use that really nice blanket that DB donated last year :) I'm not planning on doing CTP's at all because they slow down the rounds and I want to be extra safe with daylight and the new, somewhat longer and more challenging course compared with last year. But, aces, shot of the tournament, a few other prizes would be awesome. Anything that doesn't slow down play at all.

OK, the holes for this year are pretty close to finalized. There is still potential for changes to the layout but probably nothing too drastic. Holes that were used last year have accurate measurements while new holes have yet to be measured and I've only included rough guesses for distances (~).
Round 1
Hole 1 (300', par 3): Slightly uphill turnover with basket tucked around the corner of a mandatory tree. This is the same starting hole used for round 1 last year. I like it because it offers multiple routes which balance risk (tighter line/proximity to mando) with reward (higher birdie pct) for the tighter line.
Hole 2 (473', par 4): Similar to the hole 2 last year used in the first round. We will be using the longer teeing area and the basket will be to the right side and slightly behind the evergreen trees near the parking lot. This is a distance tee shot with a lot of options for landing area/approach shot. The drive is relatively unobstructed but the approach is through a line of 4 trees and the left side of the basket is blocked by thick pines. Check out which approach line you like and go backwards from there to deterime where you want your drive to land :chinscratch:
Hole 3 (498', par 3): This is the same hole 3 from the long round last year. From the tee back by the evergreens, its a long downhill hyzer/lefty flex through a low ceiling fairway. Dangerous basket placement on the downslope of a hill and danger all along the right side in the form of a trench and thick trees. I was worried last year that this might have been a tweener hole as far as score separation but it looks like there were a few birdies and lots of 4's and 5's from last year, so I'm keeping the long tee for the first round.
Hole 4 (~300', par 3): I'm keeping the same basket placement from hole 4 last year but shortening up the tee for the first round to create a par 3 tunnel shot. This is the hole that tees off from the center of a small valley. You need to throw a high straight shot through two guard pine trees to a basket perched on the side of the hill. Either you hit the window and have a good chance for birdie or you'll have to settle for a pitch to the basket and par.
Hole 5 (466', par 4): We'll be playing the same tee and basket location from the long round last year. Basically, the tee shot is a 300' hyzer or straight shot for the lefty which needs to land in the approach window which frames up the fairway leading to the basket. From the layup zone, which will be marked with flags like last year, its a tight downhill low ceiling tunnel shot to a basket protected by a really sweet looking guard tree. If you make the layup zone, this isn't too tough of an approach shot, but its really tough for a hyzer not to skip too far and leave you with a REALLY tough upshot.
Hole 6 (240', par 3): We'll be playing the island green hole for both rounds this year. Its not a particularly long or difficult shot, but I think its just hard enough to test the nerves a little bit :puke: The tee shot is a slightly uphill turnover or sidearm which needs to clear 200' to make it back to inbounds. Players also have the option to layup approximately 90' short of the island green and then throw a short approach shot for par. Any player going OB here will throw from the drop zone, just like last year.
Hole 7 (236', par 3): Again, same hole essentially as last year. I really like this par 3 hole because the short length and downhill throw really test touch and control. The larger dropoffs are behind the basket and off the left side of the fairway. With a good drive its a two, but bad drives or putts can find trouble quickly.
Hole 8 (460', par 4): This will be the same hole 8 from the long round last year, which is set up on the stump of an old cut down tree. The drive needs to go up and over a hill, definitely a hole that will favor those who know how to throw 'up' far. Throw a nice tee shot and you'll still have a bit of work to do with an uphill putter or mid, making sure to land close enough to cash in on the elevated basket.
Hole 9 (285', par 3): Same hole as last year's long round. Really tight straight downhill through young stand of trees. Not a ton of danger but the drive will have to be perfect to go clean to the basket. Options for both lefties and righties here. This is probably my least favorite hole on the course just because there is some luck involved, but keep it low and on line and you'll at least be able to maximize your odds.
Hole 10 (230', par 3): This is the 'over the ravine' shot that Sheila developed for last year's long round. Its just a straight up FUN hill to hill shot that isn't too hard, but could definitely make trouble if you screw it up. Should yield a lot of birdies...After this hole you have a pretty long walk over to the next hole but after that, no more long walks until after #18.
Hole 11 (~240, par 3): This starts the bunch of new holes for this year. The first is a relatively straight forward slightly downhill putter or mid shot to a well protected basket. Its really a pretty simple little hole but is really fun to throw and offers a fun, gimmicky basket location in the center of a tree which half of y'all will enjoy (probably because you birdied) and half of you will hate :headbang: because you overdrove and now have a crazy putt back at the basket  Moral of the story is, don't go long...
Hole 12 (290', par 3): This hole is a straight shot which has two routes. The main fairway runs up and over the corner of a tennis court to a relatively open basket on the side of a hill. Don't worry, its not at all like the Terrace shot - I actually really like this hole. Basically, righties have to throw a long straight drive up the hill which doesn't fade out at all. I'm going to place the basket such that lefties will get a little more freedom to hyzer out. On either side of the end of the tennis court are two big pines which really define the gap you have to hit, which is plenty large at about 50' wide. However, if you hit these trees (and I did several times after emptying my bag here) you will almost certainly be OB in the tennis courts. I'm considering placing a drop zone so people don't have to throw from the backside of a tennis court fence if they go OB (which is NOT fun). Everyone who doesn't want to throw up and over will have a turnover fairway to the left of the fence which yield a fairly easy, but somewhat technical upshot for three if the drive is thrown well and depending on where you land.
Hole 13 (~260', par 3): This is a really picturesque uphill shot with the basket placed on top of a small hill behind a small/medium sized tree. Both righties and lefties should have hyzer fairways to the pin, its just matter of controlling distance and when you cut in towards the pin.
Hole 14 (~370, par 4): This hole is a series of two technical shots which by themselves should be pretty easy to execute but paired will make it tough to get a birdie. The drive is a slightly downhill sharp hyzer shot past a thick clumping of skinny trees which needs to work back quickly to the left because an OB fence lines the right side of the fairway. Once you've made it past those trees, you are in a small open field at the end of which is a sharp downhill dropoff to the pin which is sitting only about 40' from the edge. As I said earlier, an OB fence lines the entire right side of the fairway, in addition, the edge of the hill will be stringed off as OB as well and the pin will be set in a stringed off island of inbounds at the bottom of the hill. If you've thrown a good drive, you'll have either a long jump putt or short touch putter toss to drop on the green for birdie 3. There is really only one tree to contend with, the challenge is more in distance control. If you haven't thrown such a great drive, you'll have to carefully consider going for the green because the farther you are away from the edge of the hill, the harder it gets to stop a disc in the inbounds circle. Decisions, decisions...:pullhair: I may also be implementing a drop zone or bunc'r system for this hole to reflect the risk/reward scenario which I am trying for but we'll see how that plays out the next few times I test the hole.
Hole 15 (~520', par 4): This hole is another Sheila design which rocks  Somewhat similar to last year's hole 11 during the long round. The tee has been moved back about 100' creating a par 4 for the first round and a par 5 for the second round. The drive is a relatively open slightly right to left turning shot which will land in an open patch of grass unless you are really bombing. From there, you'll throw down a relatively open tunnel defined by woods on both sides to the base of a large rockpile. From there its a short pitch up to the basket on top of the rockpile for an easy four. If you have a great drive, you may be able to throw a sharp hyzer or turnover sidearm to the rockpile. This is the hole which I'm focused on finding the right distance for because right now I'm thinking its very much a tweener par 4 hole which won't have much variance in scoring. It is very possible this will be shortened up so that a good drive actually already lands at the bottom of the hill creating higher probability of rewards for good/great drives. We'll see...
Hole 16 (~300, par 3): This is a somewhat open turnover or lefty hyzer shot past a stand of tall thin trees. Its a good par 3 hole but its really nothing to get excited about, you'll either have a great drive and get a birdie or you won't and you'll be making an approach for par.
Hole 17 (~450', par 3): This is one of the classic holes out at Woodland. Basically, you are throwing from the where two walking paths converge at the top of the hill by the bridges. Its a big bombing downhill toss across an open field to the basket below which will be partially guarded by orchard-type looking trees at the bottom. I'm sure everyone who has been to woodland knows what I have in mind. It'll be a really fun par 3 shot which everyone can air it out on.
Hole 18 (772', par 5): The last hole is the devious final hole from the long round last year. Basically you are teeing off slightly uphill through a windo amongst pretty thick trees. From there, you have a big bombing turnover shot which you need to navigate through only a scattering of trees and try to land within 100' or so of the pin. From there, the woods return and you will probably need a somewhat technical shot to get close to the pin. Oh yeah, an OB path runs down both sides of the fairway getting tighter and tighter until it converges about 40' behind the basket. I really like this hole and think it works out great for a par 5. Throw 3 good shots and you will almost certainly get a birdie, throw 2 good shots and you may score an occasional birdie, but only throw 1 good shot and you'll rack up strokes quickly. Scores last year ranged from 4 to 10 with no one carding the elusive eagle...
I'll post up modifications for the second round later but there aren't any major changes. For almost all the holes, we'll be using the same fairways where the basket has either been moved back or closer or the tee is moved to create a different line to the pin. Right now I'm estimating round 1 par at 61 and round 2 par at 65 with par 4's on 1, 4, 5, 8, 12, 13 and par 5's on 15 & 18 for the second round.

Here's the update for the night, an overlaid map of the course for this year. Looks like it is a bit difficult to see some of the fairway lines but you will get an idea of where I'm headed if you were there last year.
FYI - The big grey lines are NOT holes, they are walking from last tee to next basket. With the exception of hole 10 to 11 and 18 to 1, there aren't any other really long walks.

BTW - We just acquired a big name VIP on the waiting list - if enough people drop out, Mr. Feldberg may have a shot at hoisting the pretzel.

Hey guys,
Less than a month before Pretzel's big day:trophy:. I wanted to offer up a challenge to everyone. For the first $350 in donations on top of people's entry fees, Sheila and I are going to match donations. Basically, any $$$ you donate on top of your entry fee will be doubled.
We've had $130 donated up until this point, which is really good, but I'd like to see us to close in on $1000 total donated this year - if you do the math, that is LESS than the cost of a dx disc per player in the tournament.
No need to donate now, but please keep this in mind as tournament day approaches :wink2:
I'd also like to give a shout out to those who have graciously given already:

Another update for the PretzelBowl, we're getting limited runs of a few discs with a PretzelBowl III stamp. We'll have:
Tournament edition XG Champion Bosses (XG stands for Xtra Grippy - Innova's version of FLX I believe)
Pro "Wood" Rocs - Rancho Mold -These are semi-soft versions of the KC Pro plastic, not rock hard :headbang:, but not wimpy either :trophy:
12x KC Pro Avairs - The old standby stiff putter
Prices will be determined when I get the bill from Innova :)

Awesome news and kind of blah news.
The blah news is that the discs from Innova will likely not be here until Monday next week.
The awesome news is that I will have an Innova Traveler basket available to win at PretzelBowl. Here is the run down:
We will be running an ace/ctp competition during the break and directly after the tournament. Each player will get a throw but you will get to throw from shorter range if you have donated $5, shorter for $10, and then multiple throws from the $10 level for each $10 you have donated on top of your entry fee. Thanks to DGU for the awesome deal on the basket and for helping us raise some more cash for the food bank! :trophy:
Instead of CTP's this year, we'll be giving away prizes through a random drawing. Everyone will be in the drawing and will have equal odds no matter your donation level. This way, the rounds won't be slowed down by CTP's and everyone will have a chance to win.
I'm still looking for nice baskets and I'm willing to drive around to start picking them up in person this week and next week so please let me know if you have one.

Sea Tac is the best!
That's all I am trying to say...
Lakewood is a decent course, but the park itself is not nearly as pretty as North Sea Tac and the course is far less challenging. Plus, Sea Tac is playing very sweet this time of year.
The other option is to do the Acepot in the morning and then hit up Smokey's for a wimpy before tackling the 'Tac

Don't tell anyone I said this, but I would go to Seacrack too.
I'll tell you why- besides being a beast to play, it used to be a housing development, and a lot of the trees and shrubs are still there. This time of year it is awesome to find your disc under a 40' jasmine, or thirty foot forsythia, or you get the picture.

FIRST off, check out the new scoreboard (with first round cards for PretzelBowl set! - yes, its purposely blurry :) ) that was bought with funds from the Disc Golf Calendar fundraiser (4 left, see this thread (http://www.nwdiscgolfnews.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3687))

Total par first round: 62
Total dist 2nd round: 7344'
Total par 2nd round: 66
THIRD - Because of the length and the time of year, we will need to move fast during the tourney to make sure daylight isn't a problem. Last year, the event was pretty casual and we moved pretty quick through the course with only a few short backups - lets keep that tradition for this year. Just remember, its all for fun and for charity! :yay:
FOURTH, and possibly most important - Everyone needs to show up and check in by at the latest 8:30 am. If you get there at 8:35, I've probably given your spot away already :nono: - several people learned this the hard way last year - I'm also going to send an email to this effect but consider this your early warning :whistler:

There is nothing worse for a TD than having to make the tough decisions that OTHER people put him in the position to make. Great point about bringing non-perishables Toby. In addition, I suggest to bring some extra cash or a check to donate to the Northwest Harvest. The food banks usually prefer money over food since they can purchase food in bulk.
If everyone donates the equivalent of a couple new R-Pro Bosses to the charity, Seattle will love us.

Hey Toby, in my experience CTP's aren't hard to set up but they add to slowing down of the round itself. I'm thinking some side games might be better for awarding prizes like a ring of fire or maybe incorporating it into the basket giveaway contest (for example chains gets a DVD, basket gets an Innova hat or disc, within 3 feet gets a towel?).
To go along with what BA said, both food and $$$ donations are great but money will go farther in getting people fed. Everything counts though!

In other news, I think Bob's post most accurately sums up my sentiments, I'm way excited, everything is coming together for Saturday! :jumpspin:
We've got baskets all coordinated (please be there before 8am if possible basketpeople - many thanks), the discs are in, and I won't even say anything about the freaking fantastic forecast (http://www.weather.com/outlook/recreation/ski/tenday/98119) for Sat lest it all come tumbling down :bricks:
The big development in the past couple days is that Colin Pavlak of Slashed Ace Discs (http://www.facebook.com/people/Slashed-Ace/100000729124394#!/profile.php?id=100000729124394) over in Port Angeles has stepped up and donated some awesome looking "Hoist the Pretzel" t-shirts for the tourney. One will go to the winner and several others will be available for giveaways. Big thanks to our newest Gold level sponsor :yay:
The discs arrived yesterday and they look great, better than I ever hoped really. I'll post pics in a few minutes, BUT our other Gold sponsor, Chainbangerz (www.chainbangerz.com) has them in stock and ready to sell so you can make a trip there on Saturday after the PretzelBowl or Sunday and check them out :biggrin2:
I will also have some to sell, unfortunately not at the tournament itself though - Seattle Parks doesn't allow it without really stiff fees. Anyway, we've got:
KC Pro Aviars -$10
Pro Wood Rocs - $10
CFR XG (Xtra Grippy) Champion Bosses - $20
I think that is it for now, but I'll probably edit as I think of more :)

Had a blast huge thanks to all involved. Any chance anyone found a yellow champ boss on hole 3? Lost it during warm up and didn't have time to look before the players meeting. Also, I noticed my PDGA number was not used I'm assuming since I was signed up by a friend. I'd like to keep track of my ratings this year does anybody know if that can be fixed?
Thanks,
Bill pdga#42353

Back home in PDX and tired as heck but WOW what a great time we had. Thanks to all involved and especially to Pretzel for being the prize that he is. It was great to finally meet so many of the good people here on the forum from up north. Not to slight anyone else, but I was practically giddy to finally get to meet Scott Papa and FINALLY Tuffi Dolan. Tuffi, you HAVE to come down and play the Beaver State Fling. (I know you're reading this :wink2:)
Anybody that hasn't played the course at Woodland Park, it is a must play. Oh wait, you CAN'T! You missed the once a year set up of a truly magnificent course. Get signed up early next year for a real special treat in a disc golf event. Andrew.......what a sweet touch coordinating sunny, warm weather, and Bald Eagles over head for the day.
We'll be back in Seattle sooner than later and look forward to golfing with you all again.

I just realized that a ton of people walked away with stuff and I didn't put the washing instructions in with them.... So here they are - the t-shirts and fleeces can just be washed as per the instructions on the tag. The shammys however, do not work well right out of the package ( I play everyday with one and they just don't work right when they are new.) For the best performance, I suggest washing them in the regular cycle, then letting them air dry at least one time before you put it on your bag. After that, they work better than any ball golf towel I have ever tried. And don't worry about the image wearing off. We only use the highest quality plastisol ink (It's not the stuff your roommate prints on his inkjet.) Just try to stay away from the images when your wiping your discs off and it will last a long time.
Sorry that I forgot, and please pass this on to anyone who won a prize and doesn't have access to the internet...

Bill, we've updated your PDGA # so it will show up soon.
Also if anyone has any questions about their scores, b/c of scoring errors or otherwise, I can PDF anyone's scorecard and send it to you.
Also, Colin, I've earmarked 2 XG bosses for you - I'll email you to set something up.

Many thanks to Andrew, Sheila, and everyone else involved for putting on an amazing event! Even though my score was far from amazing, would it be possible to get my scores uploaded to my PDGA #42602 account whenever you can get around to it?
Also, thanks to the generous basket on hole 10 for catching my first ever ace!

Nice pic :) - Yeah, Sheila and I will do a quick double check tonight as well to catch any other PDGA #'s from the waitlist in case anyone else is in the same boat.
Great ace Aaron!
I'll also try to finish up with the budget so we all know how much was donated - because I've still got discs to sell, some of the donation will be projections based on selling those last remaining Wood Rocs.

Drumroll please,
YES, we met our goal for this year and more :yay: :yay: :yay: - a total of $1107.12 was raised this year (including the future final sales of the remaining Rocs) at the PretzelBowl for NW Harvest food bank. In addition, according to my scale, we've also got 96 lbs of food!!!
Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone who donated or helped out, you all came up big this year and I'm really excited we met our ambitious goal.
:bowing:
BTW - For anyone interested: PretzelBowl II last year raised $416 and 109 lbs of food (my scale is not very accurate so maybe we can match last years' food total as well).

Because I've been contributing to a thread about tournament budgets and accountability, I thought I would post up some of the costs and contributions for the PretzelBowl tourney. Every year people ask me about how much it costs to reserve Woodland for disc golf events, so I figure it can't hurt to get this information out there - kind of like a really simple case study for those who haven't run a PDGA yet :biggrin2:
Its pretty simple accounting because the tourney only pays out with donated merch from sponsors like Slashed Ace and Chainbangerz and from individual players (who rock!). The cash donations from all individual players (both before and during the tourney & through disc sales/entry fees for those who didn't show) and our matching contribution is all included together here in the "donations" line.
Inputs/Revenue:
Entry fees collected: 70x$10 = $700
Donations (inc. everything!): $1103.64 (& 100lbs food)
Total Inputs/Revenue: $1803.64
Costs:
PDGA Sanctioning: $50
Event Insurance: $50
Seattle Parks Application Fee: $75
Seattle Parks Reservation Fee: $120
Seattle Parks 10% of All Fees collected: $70
Discs from Innova: $266.52
Paper/Printing: ~$15 (this is a really low estimate that I used in the bookkeeping - realistically, probably closer to $30)
Giveaway Innova Traveler: $50
Total Costs (personally paid up front): $696.52
Total Contribution to Northwest Harvest: $1107.12 (& 100lbs of food)

That info was interesting Andrew. It would be great to see more tournaments like this in the state of washington that support a great cause, are cheap to play, and that are on temp courses we don't normally get to play. Those Pretzel discs were great too! For those who never got a chance to pick one up, they are great to huk, or make great wall discs and it would be nice if Andrew didn't get stuck with bill from all the extras. Pick one up if you can by sending him a PM so he will perhaps make another run of discs next year! = )

No worries on the discs John, after I meet up with a few people, we'll be down to just 5 wood rocs! :yay:
Sales went quick, just wanted to note that all fees need to be paid up front for most of this stuff - which as you can imagine, is another hidden burden of the TD
