View Full Version : "Top of the World" holes

Incidentally, not to derail the thread too much, but so many people list DeLaveaga #27 as one of the best holes in DG. I disagree--it's beautiful and fun, don't get me wrong--but really pretty straightforward and easy. I think both I-5 and Refrigerator are both better golf holes, albeit, not as scenic.
You're right, most "Top of the World" holes are more memorable for their scenery than their amazingness as disc golf holes. #14 at Whistler's Bend is even more straightforward than DeLa #27.

I think Whistler's is actually tougher, even though the basket is straight in front of you--longer distance and tougher approach shot if you err to one side or the other, with the big mound there. DeLa, it was just a simple mid shot (or an Aviar if you're Andrew) and a no brainer upshot for an easy par.

Whistler's Top of the world hole is way tougher than Dela's, I can throw a midrange at dela and go way over it. First time i played dela during masters cup, i passed basket #4 in the long by 30-40 feet, if you know what i mean, you going "ohhh shieettt"... Whistler's, I'm happy to be within 100 feet without fading 400 feet away... and hole 13, I-5, is a way better hole than hole 27...

The first (and only) time I played Dela I was still a newbie. I threw a valk forehand and flipped it hard. It sailed waaaaay left, and landed to the left of the #26 basket. The hole is a lot harder if you play it that way. :o

Whistler's hole may be more difficult (I've never played it). But, many call top of the world a great hole because of the view. I mean honestly, where else in the disc golf world do you get to sit on a beautiful bench and have such a spectacular, panoramic ocean view in front of you. Not to mention, it's not the easiest hole either. Of course I-5 is more difficult. But, how many of you can consistently birdie, let alone par, top of the world? It's one of those throws, like snap says, where you end up 200 feet in the wrong direction because its so easy to over/under throw.

I like 18 at Crystal even more, except for the hike up.

Why wouldn't they?

Why wouldn't they?
'Cause they're usually temporary, and they're FULL of shots that would be "top of the world" at any other course. And somehow it seems less cool if you take a ski lift up instead of having to play some uphill holes to get there.

The aviar at DeLaveaga didn't work out cause it was too new and stable but I KNOW Whistlers is reachable with an aviar :biggrin2:

I like the DeLa hole because there are actually a few obstacles early on in the shot which can penalize bad throws (other than over/undershooting). Its definitely not the most difficult of holes but I think is a fair test of skill.

Actually, I think that par 4 top of the world shots seem to work out a lot better because you often get a larger landing zone which is rewarded (rather than just a 30ft ring around the pin) with an easier upshot for birdie 3. It increases the reward for a skillful drive because it separates scores based on a more difficult upshot rather than everyone tossing an 80-100 footer under the basket for par.

Whoah there. Crystal Mountain is not lift-served. (Except when the SUPER course is in effect, that's been years, if I am not mistaken.) Even when it is, you always hike UP to teepad 18. It's a hike you won't soon forget. I'll never forget Stumbaugh coming down 18 in the final round of the Mountain High on the SUPER course: "I've never been so tired in my life," he groaned. Might have had something to do with that empty 6-pack he was carrying?

And yes, Crystal #18, throwing off a cliff, down a mountain, to a pin set in the 3-foot flat circle on top of a cinder cone, is awesome! Finishing the hole can be as brutal as the hike was to the teepad!

I went up there this summer, not the "SUPER" course but the regular one that you don't need to use the lift on and I had a bad back and a bum ankle, my ankle was throbbing by the time I got to about hole ten, and I limped the whole way down, it was brutal, I had to skip 18 but my buddy (killa) went and played it. That is a fun place to play and it has to be a temporary course because of skiers and snow obviously.

I love throwing from up there. I usually throw a disc that I don't care about as hard as I can and try to find it one or two holes later and if not, oh well. Its just fun to watch them S and go super far.

The first time I went up there i flipped my Flash really bad way down by that big group of trees in the middle (Hole 12 I think), but on the right of it. I didn't think I'd find it but I liked the disc so I gave it a shot (This is before i brought discs that I cared less about). I came out with the disc and a snowboard in under two minutes. Thats my favorite story from up there.

You see that little avalanche control mound waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay down there, yeah the basket is on top of that. I have 5-10 discs somewhere off the left on that hole, hehe.

Agreed - If I was skiing at Crystal and got beaned with a drive I'd be pretty pissed, and you'd be a fool to try playing in the winter.

However, the opportunity to get up and enjoy the same space in the summer months and experience some elevation/wind extremes has the same appeal as skiing to me.

The notion of courses that are impractical to play at certain times of the year not counting seems pretty silly.

well... how about sipapu in new mexico, holes 18 and 19 are nice top of the world shots and they are at 8-9 thousand feet and a lot less room to throw than the picture in crystal mountain. I remember throwing a nice tee shot off #18 that just went forever and then faded into the trees, tough approach since there is ski run behind the basket so could roll away or whatever... #19 surrounded by trees and the river is right behind it...

There were a couple pretty sweet top o' the world shots set up on Ski Hill, at Flippen Ze disc this year. Yes they're temporary, but no ski lift. Still pretty fun.

Ok~i agree ce fire. Delaveaga is a legendary shot and one not to be trivialized. I had the pleasure of KC showing me how to hyzer bomb that hole with the prevailing morning breeze blowing out towards the ocean. Rip a understable disc with hyzer 90 degrees to the right over the trees and watch it do some magic. That my friends is truely disc golf junkies fix! Oh and dont forget how small a tolerance you have for keeping it in bounds once it hits that nasty sandy hard pan that makes putting and upshots so difficult at the home of the Masters Cup. Delaveaga wins the overall in my opion!

On top of the water tank that's above the TOW tee has a spectacular view.
The actual tee off can be rather exciting too, especially with a bunjee wrapped round your ankle.
We do have a ground tee next to the tank where you can just see the top of 14 basket which plays very tuff and has a great view looking down river.
I think one of the beauties of WB's signature # 14 is that, it's a hole where it's a freakin' blast to empty your bag and you usually can find them all.

Got to play Willamette and Hoodoo this summer. Mountain golf is fun but if you flip it, say bye-bye. A buddy of mine hooked an Eagle on a steep throw and all we could do was watch it fly over the forest canopy for about 200 yards. It would have taken a search and rescue team to find it.

It's not exactly a top of the world hole but hole 10 @ Corbin is gorgeous. It over looks the river, the park and a lot of other things. Of course it's only 250 feet but still gorgeous and fun as hell to play.

An amusing side fact of this hole, a giant penis is carved into the teepad. Hence the nick name of this hole being the "dick" hole.

Here is Avery and Josh playing it during worlds in sudden death. By the way I dueced it in my round with a 25 foot putt from the right hand side of the basket, just ask my caddie! Grubber

I thought the hole was pretty cool actually...

I thought it was too, another one of my favorite top of the worlds is at Four Mound, on the Cape Fear course, it's hole number eight or nine, I can't remember but it's a 600 foot drive across a canyon with a forest of huge trees and farther down the mountain is a little lake, that's on your left and on your right is pretty open but boy the wind is brutal up there, it's a great view and a very tough hole.

When I first started playing disc golf, hole 18 at Terrace Creek seemed like a 'top of the world' shot.... it's funny how much more pedestrian it has become. Whistler's top of the world made me even more excited when I first saw it... wish I knew then what I know now--need to make it back.
(I saw Jeff Elliot turn over his 1st Run Sidewinder and hit the side of an RV on the fly... it was parked down at the campground by the river and saved his disc from being baptised...how far is that--1000+ feet?)

I agree with Adam that ski Mt. courses are in a different category of sorts, but I just wanted to say that if you like Crystal Mt. the you would absolutely love Mt. Bachelor, and I've heard Shasta is very good as well.... Mt. Bachelor was exponentially better/more extreme than Crystal(never played from the top-- paging Eddie Wren) in my opinion! The Lava Launch was nothing short of spectacular.

At the 2008 Worlds in Kzoo, the Timber Ridge course (now extinct :() had a big downhill shot at 509' that was so vertical, it was really hard to keep from going long.

I ended up throwing my most stable Xcaliber at 50% with a fan grip just to make sure it didn't flatten out at all. I tried throwing a teebird at it in practice and ended up what seemed like farther away than when I started.

I loved Dela's Top of the world shot when I played it earlier this year... even though my shot ended up in the parking lot! I got to thinking, I wonder if anyone has Aced it, and sure enough I found a youtube video that talks about one that happened During the 2007 Steady Ed Masters Cup Amateurs.
