What are the pros referring to when they talk about a push putt? I could guess... but I have a feeling I'd be wrong.

A push putt is a putt that comes out with very little spin. Pushing the disc without much wrist curl. Climo push putts, watch a video of him and that is a push putt. The other side ofthings is a spin putt which comes out with a lot of spin. Watch Nate Doss.

I talked to Feldberg about this yesterday actually. In his opinion if I grasped the entire concept...With a push putt the arm is moving in line with the pole of the basket, the wrist will not break past straight, and the arm more or less stays locked straight through the entire movement. Yes you can still spin put with this style by breaking the wrist past straight, but that is how he described one of the differences to me.

Thanks... not at all what I thought it was. Seems I used to "push putt" quite a bit... of course, I wasn't hitting a hell of a lot of baskets. :wink2:

There's another kind of push putt, where you actually *do* push the disc. Basically hold the disc like you would with a beach frisbee, with your finger on the rim and all, but instead of flinging the disc backhanded, you push it forehanded. It's not the most useful shot in the bag, but it can be a good get out of trouble shot--it's something that I think a lot of old schoolers are more proficient with.

But yeah, Redfive and Feldberg's descriptions are right...your arm basically makes the same motion as an underhand volleyball serve. I prefer to call it a pitch putt though.

How do you keep the disc from going all wobbly if you don't put spin on it?

You still add spin, you just aren't breaking your wrist past straight. There won't be as much spin as a spin putt however.

My push putt looks like a knuckle ball, very wobbly.

Use your hand to "pop" the disc off your fingers. Not sure how to explain this but you almost pull the disc back and over slightly to add spin. Watch videos of feldberg and you might see what I am talking about. It doesn't matter if it wobbles if it goes in.

i have always called that a death wobble with my putts that do that. it seems to me that that happens if i get no spin.

This is a fun putt to mess around with. My friends and I will practice it sometimes. It can be deadly in a game of PUTT cuz almost nobody has it.

Good finger spring will reduce wobble even with minimal spin. Think throwing a paper airplane for the "spring" I'm talking about.

If your fingers aren't all releasing at exactly the same time it will cause wobble.

That being said, wobble isn't the worst thing in the world. Look at Jay Reading for an insanely good putter that pushes with a lot of wobble.

I know what you are talking about. When I do it properly it is like a laser at the basket from 30 feet away. Most of the time I just can't do what it is that makes the magic happen though.

I looked up Feldberg putt on youtube and found this. Pretty cool! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bCNZNX-v7Vc

I'm glad to hear from some of the big boys ;) that the wobble isn't the worst thing in the world... on our copper pins they still hit with good force (like I mean it, as we say in my world), but I was really feeling like the wobble was bad and ugly... I'm not gonna worry about it so much! Thanks, amigos.

I love the little happy dance he does after it goes in.
