hahaha, I've only played DeLa(veaga) once, and would have had to cheat to remember which hole it # was. There's actually a lot of the course I don't remember so well, but I-5 and the Refrigerator hole are two that stuck in my mind. My dad didn't quite seem to understand my dismay when I got to I-5's green.
Incidentally, not to derail the thread too much, but so many people list #27 as one of the best holes in DG. I disagree--it's beautiful and fun, don't get me wrong--but really pretty straightforward and easy. I think both I-5 and Refrigerator are both better golf holes, albeit, not as scenic.

Totally lame, that course turned out to be a huge disappointment with the exception of the first three holes and the last hole which were spectacular IMO.
You basically throw back and forth through an entirely open field and the shots are like 450' slightly uphill so no realistic chance for anything but really boring pars.
The "superawesome" 1200' hole is just more yawns merged into one hole.

Totally lame, that course turned out to be a huge disappointment with the exception of the first three holes and the last hole which were spectacular IMO.
I agree. The old #4-#7 (I dunno what they're numbered now) were mostly just scary poison-oak-fests, but 1, 2, and 9 were pretty cool.

Yeah, there were a couple of OK holes within the original 9 (besides the ones I mentioned) but they just didn't seem well planned out and were either set up more for luck than skill or were designed to create a whole lot of 3's no matter what you did. Not to mention that you have to walk a whole bunch from baskets to tees.

#14 is at UOB; I don't remember the hole number without looking at the map. It's either that super-long one where your second shot is the one that crosses the gully, or it's the one after the island green hole, where it's the second of two tee shots in a row. I'm thinking the former, since it doesn't look like you started from a teepad.
And I'm ashamed to say that as much as I love Black Mouse, I've only ever put $1 in the donation box. (But I made the damn map, that should count for something.)

That would be a discus, and you forgot the ® after Frisbee® which means it's a registered trademark of Wham-O hence all of the confusion.
If the PDGA used the term Frisbee® they would have to do so by permission of Wham-O (and I am pretty sure Wham-O would want a piece of the action, so to speak).
You are, of course, free to call it whatever you want.

Mt. Shasta -- which is just 10-15 minutes from Weed, and also very close to the freeway -- is a work in progress. It's dusty and gritty, and still needs a lot of brush-clearing (especially an issue in the summer/fall), but with 36 holes, there's a lot of potential there. If you do stop there some time, at least play the green loop; I thought that one felt the most polished.

In the order played:
Day 1
Riverside Park, Grants Pass - This is just a fun casual course to dink around at, nothing too exciting. It does have some interesting shots under a big bridge (I enjoy quirky obstacles on some courses:jumpspin:)
Tom Pearce, Grants Pass- This one has some pretty sweet terrain and some very cool holes. Its got a good mix of shots and the long tees are pretty tough (we played a mix of long/short). Its definitely worth checking out.
U of OB, Weed- Super fun and has some really unique shots although only if you are into gimmicky designs (and I am!!!). A few of the wooded holes really don't have much of a fairway but those are more than made up for by the good holes. Would highly recommend playing this one.
Anderson River, Anderson- This course surprised me, its mostly through moderate to tight woods and is pretty traditional, but again very well laid out. The designers really maximized the space available, would love to play this one in a tourney. Also, the orange dipped mach baskets look pimp :cool2:
Day 2
Golden Gate Park, San Francisco- This one really kind of fits my biases for what I like in a course. Very tightly wooded and long requiring accurate drives, technical outshots (when you doink your drive), and some course management for the longer holes. If you aren't on your game driving wise, this place will eat you alive. It makes my list for the top 3 of the trip so its a must play!
Stafford Lake, Novato- If you had to play only one of these courses, Stafford Lake is my pick. It really reminds me a lot of the Whistler's Bend course (and a couple back in VA) although without the shorter woodsy holes on the front. Extreme elevation shots, some great par 4 holes, and beautiful views in a semi-wilderness area.
Skyline Wilderness, Napa - We only played a few holes here and then a big thunderstorm hit so we couldn't stick around. Seemed like it would be a pretty decent course with elevation changes and moderately thick woods.
Aquatic Park, Berkeley- Originally we had planned to play Skyline and call it a day, but the T-storm ended that early so we had some time before sunset. I really wasn't expecting much out of this course, but it turned out to be kind of fun. Lots of holes play near the water because the entire course is maybe 150feet in width-its basically a long narrow strip of land. We both lost a disc each trying to make the water holes, I lost mine on a big 340' or so hyzer bomb entirely over the water that hit a few tree branches. It was virtually impossible to navigate this course, it looks like they have had a lot of redesigned holes and you couldn't play here if it was a nice sunny day because most of the holes through directly down a heavily used walking path.
Day 3
Ryan Ranch, Monterey- This course is definitely designed for cannons as a lot of the holes can be reached with a 425-475' RHBH hyzer. There are some really nice wooded holes mixed in but I found it a little repetitive to toss my destroyer, throw a short upshot, and putt out. Still, overall it was a sweet course, just designed for someone who throws a bit farther (or shorter) than I do.
Don Dahvee, Monterey- Good luck figuring this course out, we ended up playing Safari here because navigation is impossible, it was still fun. The land here would make for a really fun casual course if it was laid out with any thought. Its also a course where they tried to cram 18 crappy holes in rather than making fewer, but nicer holes.
CSUMB Oaks, Seaside- This is the much nicer and newer of the two CSUMB courses. Pretty large variety of shots and some really unique holes mixed in. I'd probably skip this one next time around, but I'm glad we got out to play it and I'd still recommend it.
CSUMB Cypress, Seaside- This course reminded me of a lot of the "old-school" courses back in Chicago. Fairly short, open holes with trees that force you onto wide right/left turning lines. A fun course to play casually but its not really going to challenge you.
Pinto Lake, Watsonville- As I stated earlier, this course was a big dissapointment. The first three holes are epic and I was super excited headed into hole four. Hole four is a completely lame dinker shot with virtually no fairway to get inside the ring. After that, you head out into this wide open field with really boring long shots. A couple guys excitedly told me about this "monster" hole back there. Come to find out that its a 1200' shot through a field with absolutely no obstacles. To me, thats about the same as a 200' hole in a wide open field - BORING! Throughout the entire course, you've got a ton of walking from basket to tee and even then a lot of walking back down the fairway that you just played. There isn't a ton of other option for the course designer so I don't want to make it sound like someone f'ed up, but IMO this will never be a "Championship Caliber" course as its being built up to be. Its sad because there are about 6 REALLY great holes here :(
Day 4
Aptos HS, Aptos- Aptos was another nicely designed course with tons of variety in shot selection. It really had everything with big elevation changes, tight woods to wide open fairways, a few dangerous greens, and a nice par 4 hole to boot. Good start to a great day!
DeLaveaga, Santa Cruz- DeLaveaga was another really enjoyable course with some awesome holes, a lot of OK holes, and some holes that I just didn't care for. The one design formula which kind of irritated me out there was all the fairways which are fairly open from teebox to about 30 feet in front of the pin which is tucked in the middle of some randomizer trees. You can throw nice shots at these type of holes all day but its how lucky you get navigating the last 20' of trees which determines if you are going to end up in high pct for birdie or too far away to convert. This type of hole design repeats for about 8-10 of the holes here, which is only a fraction of the whole course, but IMO its just plain not the premiere course it is made out to be. Oh yeah and I shot an even par which I was fairly stoked about for my first time there :trophy:
Black Mouse, Felton- Black Mouse is just plain fun to say as in, 'the Black Mouse totally f'ed you over on that really nice looking drive'. I'm half kidding, the course itself is really sweet and way fun but there are a few holes (only like 2-3) where the fairways need to be defined a bit more. If you are like me and love tight woods, you'll like this one - definitely worth a trip after playing DeLaveaga. Sidenote: Sheila really tore up the back nine here and had some really close ace runs on some tough holes
De la Raza, San Jose- Yup, this was my favorite course of the trip, Stafford is the best in terms of challenge and would be the best for tourney golf and thats why its got the #1 spot. The designer here did a great job of making awesome golf holes. They could have easily crammed 18 baskets in here and made a terrible course but they did it right and made a niner with multiple pins (4) that really mixes things up. A lot of holes had multiple routes and choices to make off the tee and I'm sure that would only get better as the pins shifted around. I'd LOVE to have this one as my home course. You can tell its well taken care of with really nice tees and some sweet tee signs on each hole.
Hellyer Park, San Jose- Kind of ditto to what I said about De la Raza except this course has a lot more elevation, dual tees, and a couple holes which might be par 4's. I tended to just like the shots more at Raza which is why I chose that one over Hellyer.
Old Ranch, San Ramon - Yeah, its basically 10 baskets on a big open hill. Tees are signed but still hard to find and since all the baskets are in view, its hard to pick which one you are supposed to go to. If I had to pick a place to practice putting, I'd go here because the view over the town below and the rolling hills is really stunning. That picture I posted was one of about 30 I took but none of them really came out because it was too dark. Really this one isn't worth the trip unless you want pictures.
Andy's Top 5 Picks: 1-Stafford Lake, 2-Raza/Hellyer Combo (liked Raza better), 3-Golden Gate, 4- DeLaveaga, 5- UOB
Sheila's Top 5 picks: 1-Stafford Lake, 2-Golden Gate, 3- Hellyer/Raza (liked Hellyer better), 4- Ryan Ranch, 5- DeLaveaga

I'd heard that they changed it recently. I played it about two years ago when it was 18 holes covering a much wider area, and my only complaint was tons of poison oak. Do they still at least have the hole that goes under the bridge deck parallel to the bridge?
CSUMB Oaks, Seaside- This is the much nicer and newer of the two CSUMB courses.
I didn't think anyone would ever use the word "nicer" to describe the Oaks Course. Harder, yes, more interesting, definitely, but not "nice." :)

Yeah, maybe nice isn't the word  We couldn't find that bridge hole despite looking around for a while.

I think it may be gone now; it'd be hard to miss. Basically, you stood under one end of the bridge that leads into the shopping center, and the basket was on the other end, across a ravine (crappy photo) (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course_pics/1193/d8025f9b_m.jpg). You could throw a laser-straight shot, as hard as you wanted, and if you didn't get the ace, your disc would just crash into the concrete wall on the other side. Very unique. But I think the course doesn't even make it as far as the bridge now.
Of the courses you played that I've also played or at least walked around, my top 5 would be Black Mouse, Anderson, DeLaveaga, Aptos, and Hellyer/La Raza. (I haven't been to Stafford Lake yet.)
