View Full Version : Worst Disc Company Alive Today?

So we all know that the Discraft/Innova argument will never end between which is the best of the two. Lets try something different. How about the worst disc company that still exists today.
In my opinion it is definitely Lightning. I have thrown so many of their discs over the past year and NOT A ONE is worth it's weight in salt.
Worst of the Lightning discs? Number 2 Flyer or Number 1 Helix. They fly like bricks. Scratch that, bricks fly better.
Plus, what the hell is up with their plastic choices? Their baseline plastic feels like it was made from Play-do that sat out too long and their Pro plastic always has stringers and sharp edges that tear up the hands.
On a side note, I love their bags.

I love my Lightning putter (#2 Upshot), and a lot of their discs are great for newer players. Lightning's biggest fault is that they haven't released anything new in at least 5 years.
I'd nominate QuestAT for the worst company. They've released at least two discs that didn't even meet PDGA specs, and their consistency on discs like the Inferno is horrible.

The company that puts out the Turbo putter has got to be the low man on the totem pole!

That'd be QuestAT. Their other non-approved disc was The Wheel.

Quest and Lightning both have some decent beginner discs. A Lightning #4 Driver was the first driver I could throw flat and straight.
Hell, they have a few discs that are good for more serious players (the T-bone and one of the Hyzers come to mind).
They know their market, and if you're reading this forum then you're probably not in the right demographic.
As far as I'm concerned, the only truly crappy disc companies are the ones that perpetually promise whatever amazing disc is coming out, but then never release it (Discwing, looking at you).

Innova is the worst based on their business practices. They are HOOOOORRRABLE!!! (whitest kids you know reference)
Anyway, they hold a monopoly of a patent and sue any disc golf company that manufactures disc golf discs. This includes: discraft, lightning, and others

Lightning for sure. Discs don't fly good....at all, plastic sucks, and they warp to the light hit of a tree. Now I have not thrown every single one of their discs so I can't be for certain they are the worst but the ones I have are garbage. And some of their discs may be good I just haven't discovered them yet.

What about Vibram, now I've only seen one of there disc's "the 10m brick". It might work for somebody, but you will never find one in my bag.

That's Quest, not Vibram.
Vibram is just testing the waters right now and just has a couple very nice putters on the market.

Uh, Sorry Sean. That patent ran out YEARS ago, hence the sudden outbreak of new Disc Companys.
Gateway was the ONLY comkpany that ever was "threatened" with a lawsuit.
I think Discraft paid a $1 per Disc fee until the patent ran out...could be wrong (Papa?)
Same with DGA's patent on Baskets.........It went away.....and a lot more baskets started being made. That patent is why Innovas baskets look the way they do.

Which is also why the Mako and Meteor are the same disc, along with the Focus and Wizard, from everything I can tell, short of grabbing calipers.

Hmm, meteor has been out a lot longer than the mako. And the wizard has been around a long time. The Focus is obviously similar to the Wizard, but only because Discraft wanted a disc in the line up that had similar properties (stability).
Also, the meteor and the mako are very different from technical standpoint. Look it up in the technical specifications document on pdga. Meteor is smaller diameter, and slightly sharper rim.

I played urban golf down the street with a proto vibram putter and there was not a scratch on the disc.

I gotta say Discwing is the worst, by far. After they pay me the money they owe me, I might change my mind, but after stiffing me I've got nothing good to say about them but goodbye. Don't throw their crap, folks.

For once I agree with you Jub. Anyone who has tried to work with Gateway on ordering discs for a tourney knows that they have major issues over there.
Not dissing their discs but I'd never throw them because I just don't have that much respect for the way the company is run.

I know Dave (Gateway) was a big enema wholesaler 10 years ago. When he built a huge wholesale client list enema went behind his back and contacted them directly thus cutting him out of the loop.

I've dealt with Gateway, and although Dave talks a million miles a minute, he was great. He set me up with great prices on custum stamped plastic and threw in 100 free stamped mini's.

Oh I can't believe I forgot about the crap that is QuestAT. Yeah, they take the throne I think from Lightning but only on the basis that they can't manufacture discs to pdga standards.
Still think that Lightning has the worst plastic composite ever made though.

Then again, so does poo. :chinscratch:

In all fairness to QuestAT, the Turbo Putter was PDGA approved for a while. The PDGA revoked approval after the disc was released (maybe it was just before the disc was released, but after they had already been produced. I don't recall which).

The Turbo Putter (aka Garbage) had it's approval revoked after it was in production and being released in small numbers. I actually have two of the discs that have the approval number and date on it. One day they will be worth money but right now they are worth the dust they collect.
In all fairness, poo floating is a much more worthwhile thing then Lightning's ability to float. At least if your poo is floating your healthy. If you lightning is floating, maybe it's time for an intervention:chinscratch:

Its not that they can't, its that they have no desire to meet PDGA standards. Their market is not the tournament crowd.
You might as well talk shit about Wham-O because they make Frisbees that don't meet PDGA requirements.

To be fair to Quest AT, they're the only company radically pushing the limits of what can be made, they're doing new things. Innova and Discraft are not going to relinquish their reign on the traditional discs market, yet look at all the small companies that just make more average discs. Not bad discs at all, just normal discs. Companies like Latitude 64 and Daredevil, I know there are more out there. Sure their discs are odd, but you never know when the big breakthrough will strike and Quest will make a must have disc. I give them credit for trying.
