hmmm... starting to wonder about letting Oly keep score. Quick question it seems as though the Results for Week 1 Mas v Oly do not match the score card.
Are the handicaps set now for the duration or will they be adjusted after each match?
Also I was a little confused on roster rules, as a team we need to bring 9 but they don't have to be the same 9 every time? I.E. if someone can't make it we can sub someone else and still receive our 1 point?

Im pretty sure rosters are set for the season, so no subs. Also, the handicaps should be set BEFORE each event, but will change for the next event. In other words you will know who won each match after the round is complete from now on, but the handicaps will change for the next venue.

Yea just read the rules again and answered my own question sorry for not starting with that. I also noticed that the standing do reflect the tie so looks like its just a typo on the results page. A tie... of course you know Team Oly this means war!!! Ever heard of the Ryder Cup... think about it.
New question: Will the team captains have access to updated/current handcaps before they set their line ups?

You wont know the handicaps until the rosters are exchanged at the begining of the match. You need to have both players' ratings before handicaps can be figured. You can however, look up the ratings and find out where you stand.
We were having some issues with the spreadsheet last night, everything should be fairly close to where it needs to be, must have forgotten to change the results page.

Busted. The only problem now is that no matter how I work the spreadsheet I still cant get Oly a win....
However, I think that both the Schedule and Results page as well as the Standings are correct now.

Maybe this will help with a few different questions we have been getting...
Local Player Rating = average (all of your team disc golf singles round ratings + current PDGA rating*)
*for those of us that have one
Everyone's player rating will be re-calculated after each of the remaining 4 events. You can see all of our current player ratings (referred to as "local player rating" on the “rosters and player ratings.xls” spreadsheet which you can download from the “Files” page on the website.
Prior to each and every head to head matchup,
Handicap = (higher local player rating – lower player rating) / RPPS
RPPS (rating points per stroke) is based on on the course SSA - see the table on the “rules and scoring” page on the website. Usually this will be 9,10, or 11.
example : Crabtree vs Gilberts
1041 – 952 / 10 = 8.9
always round down so 8.9 → 8. So after the round add 8 shots to Crabtree's score to see who wins the matchup.
From here on out we will calculate each handicap before each match when the captains pick the lineups so we will all go into each match knowing just how many shots the higher rated player is giving.
Hope this helps.

And to actually answer your question, Toby-
All of the matchups from the first 2 events are official now and will not change, and are based on each of our current ratings as they are right now (after White River). So your rating of 945 was used for any and all of your matches from NAD and White River.
It would also be your rating for next week's match at Shelton except I think we are hoping to factor in our new PDGA ratings after they do their update on the 25th.

Take Hwy 101 from Olympia to the Hwy 3 ramp. Take Left off the ramp, this will bring you back down a service road parallel to 101 (W. Golden Pheasant Rd.). Turn right at the Golden Pheasant bar on to W Delight Park Rd. Follow this road for about half a mile or so and the course is on your right.

Side note on the subject of player shortages, and this may just be a conversation about next year but what playing a 1v2 doubles match? Less folks sitting, and hey a least there is a chance, not a very good one considering it would NOT be Cali, just straight 1v2, but still if doubles team imploded and the single played great round... Makes for high drama, and I think stays in the spirit of the TDG which is getting out and playing with folks you may rarely see and having fun. My 2 cents.

Good Times today.
I updated the Scedule and Results (http://sites.google.com/site/wateamdisc/home-1/schedule-and-results) Page and the scorecard links there. The standings have been updated as well..
The round ratings are caculated but am having a little trouble with my open office spreadsheets so some of the round ratings get a little weird. All the round ratings and updated player ratings will be available for download tommorrow. SSS was like 51.7 for first round and 52.0 for the second round.
The 1v2 doubles idea is a good one to consider. Doesnt really work with our current doubles handicapping (which could be improved too). Hopefully no team comes up short again. After all we do have 3 alternates per team.
How bout that weather? We're really on a roll this year.

1 vs. 2 doubles will probably not be an option any time soon. Like Lundy said, it doesn't work with our current handicap system. More than the handicap system though is the "spirit of the game" it's a "doubles" matchup.
I hope it doesn't become an issue of teams not fielding a full full roster, 3 alts. should be plenty!

hmmm I do realize that it current solution only sits one person and that the best thing is for six members of the Team to show. On the other hand I don't see the handicap as an unsurmountable obstacle either. Just sort of looking at it from the stand point of this being a reoccurring yearly event that may have more teams as well as more scheduling conflicts. I see no reason to change the policy for this year, for me this more of a "How could it work if?" conversation than anything else.
-thanks for the work you guys have done so far this has been a blast!

I think if these people can't commit to playing all or most of the events then they shouldn't play team golf, not to be a dick but I'm sure there are many other people wanting to be on a team that would commit to each event. I've had to tell a dozen people I'm sorry for not including them on Team Terrace, I like our team though.

Well said Thomas! And Morgan, you bring up good points too. Dan, im sorry, but I stand by a doubles "team".
A couple of thoughts on the scheduling...I wanted this league to be a winter league for many reasons, but a main reason is to eliminate as many scheduling conflicts as possible. I think that TDG will make enough of an impact on the WA golf scene that winter tourneys will take into account our schedule before setting dates (and vice versa). I spoke with Tom, he didn't know there was a WA TDG event planned for last weekend. Had he known, Im sure we could have come up with a viable solution. This being the first year, I limited the number of teams to 6, next year will most likely have twice the number of teams, thus twice as many golfers.
Lundy and I have had a lot of conversation about the current doubles handicap system. Neither of us are happy with how its working out. It isn't exactly not working, its just not what we were looking for. The idea behind it was to help keep doubles matches closer with out huge handicaps. What its doing is keeping the handicaps too close and not giving strokes where they should be given. We have a few ideas on how to make it more consistent, we will continue to run the numbers until we come up with the best solution for us (I mean Team Oly)!

I think Lund was talking to me about having the doubles handicap be based off of the highest rated person playing in a doubles match for a team.
We have had a real hard time trying to find a good system to handicap the doubles matches. We tried to add the 2 ratings and divide by 2, but that really helps out teams with a 1000 rated player and a 700 rated player. This year we are going with just using the higher rated player's handicap, but that seems to favor the team that has 2 1000 rated players to pair up.
Next year I am thinking about going back to the previous method but making the dubs use an alternate shot format instead of best shot.
If you guys have any ideas that you think will work out better, I'd love to hear them.:pirate:
sillybizz
February 3rd, 2010, 12:15 PM
If you take two 900 rated players and put them together, that's 1800.
If you take one 1000 rated player and one 800 rated player, that's 1800. So these teams are playing scratch or even or whatever, no strokes given, correct?
The team with the 1000 rated player has an advantage in my opinion so I think basing the doubles handicap from the highest rated player is a better way to go, I'm not exactly how you guys are going to do that but it sounds like you're on the right track for next season.
I guess I gave away a little strategy here, oh well. :)
Yardbird
February 3rd, 2010, 01:43 PM
How about only allowing one player on the doubles team to have a rating above 950 (or something like that) and use the higher rated player's rating as the handicap? I think most teams could support this (except White River). Another option would to limit a team to only allow one of their top 4 rated players from playing in a given Doubles match (this would prevent two top rated players from pairing up.
Side note:
IMHO, the Doubles match should be 2 vs 2. If a team can't field all matches, then they should forfeit the matches to which they can't field. And Yes, I would like to see a doubles match fielded after the four singles matches are fielded. Just the way that TDG was handled last weekend.
Kenny B
February 3rd, 2010, 05:14 PM
I'd like to keep a best shot doubles format instead of going to an alternate shot format, if possible. I think it's more exciting that way because players have more opportunity to go for high risk/reward shots. Like when player one is sitting for an easy 3, player two can go for the duce without worrying about landing in the middle of some nasty trees. Or when player one puts an approach up for an easy putt, player two can run the chains.

1000 + 800 vs 900 + 900... I think that the fairness of this match could really be more dependent on the difficulty of the course than any other factor. Out at Isabella where it is fairly wide open not a lot of punishment for shots that stray a little bit could be better suited fo the 800 + 1000 team but a tighter more technical course could be more suited towards the 900 + 900 team.
I'm not sure though if anything close to this scenario has happened yet looking back through the dubs matches so far they seem... fair I guess for lack of a better word. Are there doubles matches that the handicap system seems to have done a sleight disservice?

Out of the 12 doubles matches that I've calculated, there were two that didn't seem right. When I used the (rating+rating/2) formula, those two matches changed.

Funny you should mention it Toby, there has been talk of another league forming that would incorporate match play. The basic idea is to have a weekly match against an opponent. Its up to you and your opponent when you play it. So say you and I are matched up for week 1. Sunday night I call you up and say "hey Toby, when this week is good for you to meet at such and such course, so I can show you how to play disc golf". you say "Monday is out for me, but Tuesday, Im gonna kick your butt"! I say "Bring it on"! "See you Tuesday". Tuesday comes, you destroy me, and you (because you won)email the outcome to the POI.
Thats it in a nutshell. This would be a seperate league, aside from WA TDG.

I just wanted to update everyone on the conditions at Terrace Creek for this weekend...
If you have played the course before you will know it gets pretty muddy this time of year and it's going to rain this week. We have got bark spread around tee pads and baskets as best as we can without upsetting the city of MLT. There isn't much garbage on the course these days as us locals are doing a better job and this weekend I am going to pick up any remaining litter I can see and get rid of it. Another note for those of you who have never played the course: you will see yellow bands of tape on the baskets, this is our version of a next tee sign, just go in the general direction of where the tape points you. I'm looking forward to taking on Team OLY! :)

According to my un-official calculations, the final matches will be the same as they were yesterday. Steilly vs. WR, NAD vs. MAS, Oly vs. Terrace. Terrace kicked our butts all over North Seattle, and it was good enough to move into the hunt for third place!

NAD vs MAS (5-5). It was the first event that we didn't have all nine of our players and the bonus point would have been nice for the win. But, in the end, it didn't matter, because Oly got thier butts handed to them.:nahnah:
We needed to earn more points in week 5 than Terrace for a chance to play for 3rd at the 'final'.

I was think about something different for the finals, just spitballing here
What if we put everyone's name in a hat and paired up everyone randomly, doubles and everything.
Also, what if we had all 9 of our players playing each round. So if a team didn't have someone show up, that would be a forfeit. In my opinion this would show the true strength of each team.

For example, if white river wins but still does not match the points that steilly put up overall throughout the season do they win or does stielly?
If white river loses and oly wins........does oly get second place?

The winners are decided first by W/L/T record. If there is a tie, then total points for the season. If there is still a tie, then it comes down to who won during the regular season match. If there is STILL a tie, it comes down to a CTP by all present team members.
ie. Steilly and White River are playing for the championship. The worse that either one of them can do is second place. The only way that WR can win is if they beat Steilly by more than the 4.5 points that Steilly is currently ahead by.
As far as playing all nine members of the team (in the final), it seems like everybody is all for it. Teams will not forfeit a match if they can't field 9 though, (two teams have only 8 left due to injury).
I think it would add a cool twist to things to draw match ups out of a hat. Ill run it by the captains and see what they think.
Eric, even if we decide not to use this idea as a whole, you could still convince your team and your opponent to do it!

you guys dont seem like you have very much self esteem here talking about scoring 80-100 on a PAR 72 course! hello!! why not be shooting for 65-72?? here is a secret for shooting par, play safe shots. play strictly for par, not for birdies.
when you start shooting for birdies you start making riskier shots and those dont always turn out the way you wanted. play safe shots that you KNOW will be in the fairway and are well placed for your next shot.
but hey, for team terrace i say shoot all the crazy shots you want! it will make it that MUCH EASIER TO BEAT YOU GUYS!:nahnah:

It used to be a published course, back when there was 14 published courses. Now with the streamlining of Steilly, there are only a few published courses; the NW, the SE, the AM? It is also a "safari" course, it uses the WHOLE park for one course.

With imagination and determination, anything is possible.
One possible scenario would be trying for the ace run, but ricocheting off a tree into the road. Then trying to salvage an embarrassing 4p on the easiest hole on the course by getting your disc back in and towards the basket, you bounce off another tree and into the road again. Standing from the road, you realize there isn't any clear window to the basket, and do what you can to get close by trying to power through some branches. You're left with a long putt, miss it, and finally make the comebacker as the rest of your card looks on in pain.
Of course, the sensible thing to do would be to retee when the first shot flies OB, but where's the fun in that (purely hypothetical situation)?

Rebecca and i went out and played the par 72 course yesterday afternoon. never had played it before and i have to say that i am impressed.
It wasnt as bad as it looked on the map, but it is deffinately a challenging layout that requires more shot placement than just raw power.
i shot a 79 with only my 2 meteors(best midrange ever made) and my putter and that was with ALOT of horrible shots. a couple boinking of some trees fairly close to the teepads. love those trees. i think if i would have used my drivers the score would have probably been in the 80s or 90s :jumpspin::D

I totally agree. Oly has really big arms in fact they are huge. Us wimpy team terrace folk will be lucky if we get our discs within one hundred feet of those guys off the tee:nahnah:
you would think that big arms have the advantage but they dont on the par 72 course. Only a couple holes will allow the big guns to utilize their distance potential, most of this course is ALL ABOUT SHOT PLACEMENT not how far you can throw it into the scotch broom or trees. i would rather be 275 ft in the fairway looking at 400 more feet to the basket than being 400 feet in the blackberrys/ scotchbroom with 275 more feet to go without a clear shot.
but hey, go ahead and fire your cannons. i will wave to you from the fairway! :p

Its official.... After much more research and discussion..... The SSA's will be as follows.
Par 72 Noodlearm SSA = 70-71. Rating points/ per stroke = 6
The Steilly Amature Course SSA = 44-45. Rating points/ per stroke = 13
This should make for an exciting day of golf. There will be alot of strokes given on the Noodlearm Course.
ie. Crabtree vs. Rob Dean, Kyle gives Rob 17 strokes!
The lunch will be Steak and Chicken Fajitas, served between rounds rather than after. A nice meal after the brutal Noodlearm will be a welcome sight!

Chris Gilberts had the voice and Eric Lund the brains. Great job putting together a great winter league and thanks to everybody else who put time into setup courses and food!
My only suggestion for next year would be to have a regular season at everyone's home courses. Followed by a tournament style finale at a neutral course.
Example- First round-Semi Final
1 vs 4
2 vs 3
Second Round
Winner vs Winner of the first round. Winner takes all regardless of total points or standings
Or if we had a total of eight teams. It could be a two day finale or two weekend finale matching the highest to the lowest seeds. That way every team has a shot at pulling out a championship ala march madness. That would definitely make for a very exciting anything could happen finish

Which courses up north would you like to see played? Is there enough courses/interest to make a North End division and a Southside division? Is there enough interest to help with the stats and the administrative side of the league?
Yardbird
April 7th, 2010, 10:58 PM
As for the expansion for TDG, I think two divisions would work (north and south). Have six (7 person) teams in each division with playoffs for the top four teams in each division, then combine both divisions for the final event at Sea-Tac.
For this to work, TDG would need some support from the north end for stats and general organizing for the northern division.
Toby Puttzinski
April 8th, 2010, 12:13 AM
All good ideas IMO... I especially like the idea of two divisions... There could be teams from the North representing Terrace, Lakewood, Seatac, NAD, Arlington/Lake Stevens, North Park and White River?.... and teams from the South representing Oly, Steilly, Mason County, Riverside, Dailiwood?, Steilly #2?-- if you put White River in the South Division that would make an even 6 in each, with what I have hypothesized... it would seem that expanding to 8 teams per division could work out as well.
My vote would be to have the final at Steily again, minus the par 72 marathon round...:wink2:
I would like to volunteer to be a captain:pirate: for the North Park White Buffaloes, if league expansion allows for there to be a team NP.

I don't see why teams have to be course specific. I like the way OR does it where it's just groups of friends with no particular course affiliation. Having a North division definitely would make it easier for me to participate again.
I agree with the finals at Steilly, minus the par 72. I'd much rather play the pro 27 layout if we wanted to have an "epic" final day.

I was glad I got to play it after hearing about it for so many years, but I just didn't think it was great in terms of the actual holes. Some of them were good, but some were kind of hokey. The Pro 27 remains my favorite layout at Steilly as I think it showcases the best of the holes out there.

I actually like the way we do it, it builds more of a rivalry between courses. I vote for the finals be somewhere other than Steili only because it should be like the Super Bowl and have a different location every year.

I'm not sure why NAD would be in the North division. I would think it would be like this for 8 teams:
Terrace, Lakewood, Seatac, Arlington or Lake Stevens, North Park, Juel, Sedro Wooley, Mossy Roc or Cornwall
For South I would say:
Olympia, Steili, NAD, Dalaiwood, Shelton, Riverside, White River, Lake Fenwick

I would like to expand the league to 12 teams this year. Two divisions of 6 teams playing on separate courses. I think 36 TDG players on the course is as many as we should try and fit without closing the courses down. Thinking back to the events at NAD and White River and even Steilly for that matter, there were quite a few casual golfers on the course when we were playing. I don't think it's fair to the locals to take over their course without compensating their club or their parks dept.
I would be open to teams forming on their own without course affiliation, IF each team could step up and claim a course to "prep" for the TDG event held there. This year it was up to the captains and local clubs to prep the course and stipulate course specifics.
The other side of that coin is that I like the "course team" rivalry that goes on.
Tim
April 8th, 2010, 08:48 AM
Yeah, I guess part of my beef is that "course rivalry" is what's led to each course having a different club here in the Seattle area. Well, Terrace and NP are both supposed to be part of the Seattle DGC, but I think a good part of why efforts to revitalize the club failed was that there was a underlying attitude from some North Parkers that it was "just some Terrace guys trying to take over" (which for the record, is total BS). Not to mention, Team Terrace this year consisted of folks from all over, hardly any of which would be considered regulars there.
But I digress. I agree on the other points you made there, Chris.

What happens when one course wants to have more than one team due to the overload of players compared to other courses. Im sure steilly could easily fill 4-5 teams if they wanted to......especially if we drop it from 9 players to 7.
I hope you all realize just how big this is going to be and how we may have to consider two tdg leagues compared to one. There are players out there that want to participate, but wont be able to due to favorable selection by the teams and thier captains. Hey are you going to limit it to 6 teams? What about us kats that like to throw up north? I know I can round up a team of Everett area guys that would be down to play. You could add two courses to the events, lake stevens and arlington. How would we go about this? If not how can I get on the Terrace Creek team? Who do I need to contact? I missed out on the fall winter league, Id love to play the spring summer league. Thanks for the info.
There will be 9 spots on each of 6 teams. The teams that will be represented will be: Terrace creek, White River, Steilly, Yauger, MCDG (Shelton), NAD Park.
Each team will need at least 6 members at each of 6 events. If you divide the number of events by the number of members of each team you will find you only need to be able to commit to 4 events to participate.
Stay tuned for the full disclosure of WA TEAM DISC GOLF rules. Its not quite ready yet, but I had a good meeting with Eric Lund tonight, and we're getting the details figured out.

Thats what Im saying. Can we get a team from the kats that play up north? You would have access to two more courses, Lake Stevens and Arlington to throw into the mix. I know of 8 or 9 guys that have already expressed interest in the idea. Dont exclude us cause your all afraid of the baskets up north. It would be great to give the guys that play up in the Everett area their own team and a chance for some of the guys that play down south to come up and play a couple of courses they might not think of playing. Its a win win situation. Who do we have to contact? When do we need to sign up? Let me know so we can get this rolling. Thanks for the info.

I believe they are talking about next winter, not a league during summer since that is when many of the other players play in tournaments. We are already considering a team for arlington/stevens, but I am not sure about both as stevens most likely could not hold that many players at once. Talk with BA as I think he might be the captain if a team is added in that area. Also, you could talk with Thomas and ask him to keep you in the loop. As for now, it is just talk but it WILL happen (as far as adding teams up north).

Sweet. Good to know. I know summer is the busy tournament time of the year, couldnt we schedule the league days on days that there are no tournys? Somehow I don't think Chris wants to do a summer league. I'm more interested in winter leagues to give me a reason to still play disc golf and we can play when the least amount of casuals are on a course. I've heard rumors that team golf will be coming again very soon and haven't gotten an email or heard anything about it in a while and I am wondering what's going on? I vote for Saturdays this year or I can't Captain a team. :( My sister wants to Captain her own team as well. So how many teams? Players? Courses?

I also think that team golf should take small steps each year and not bite off more than you can chew.
Smart thoughts right here.:trophy:
One year I thought that it would be cool if we all had lunch at the course, so I brought out all of the cooking stuff every week and made food for everyone. The next year I almost didn't run the league it was so much extra work with the food (it also made it tough for me to play in the morning round if I was supposed to cook food for everyone to eat during lunch).:headbang:
Luckily somebody told me to just drop the cooking and concentrate on the main operations of the league and here we are, still going strong.:pirate:

I'll second the vote for moving Team golf to Saturdays.
I have heard rumors that the amount of matches and the timeline for WA Team golf will be similar to last year. The only real changes will be some added teams and a few rule changes.
I guess we will have to wait until the official post for the 2011 WA Team golf.

There have been alot of people who wanted to start more teams up north to have as many teams as there was on the south end. Maybe we should divide team disc golf to have a south league and a north league and have the winners of both meet at a neutral location for the title....sort of like the nfl's american and national leagues. Just a thought..........it may cut down on alot of travel.

If we do a north and south league, Lake Stevens (Team Hold My Beer While I Kiss Your Girlfriend) would be proud to represent.
I vote for Saturdays. Sundays are for a day of worship....and football..

I still think teams shouldn't be necessarily tied to one course, i.e. what them Oregon kids do. Just let a group of friends team up and come up with their own name--I like your idea there, BA, even if it is a mouthful. Apparently, a name means a lot to some people when it's related to their home course (and they can be butthurt if not on said team), an opinion Gilby patiently endured this past weekend.
I like the North/South idea.
I like Sundays...football=empty courses.

Midnight. Maybe later. No really, last year was tough with all the distance we had to drive. However, if we split up the divisions, sundays won't be nearly as bad.:wink2:

Ahh, yeah, agreed. I suppose I should say IF there's a north league, THEN I'd prefer Sundays. If there's no north league, I likely won't be signing up this time around. Nothing against Chris and crew, it's just more than I could comfortably commit to.
