Matchplay for the Masses

When: Saturday, November 14th - Players meeting at 9:00
Where: Terrace Creek
Cost: $5
Maximum # entries: 32
Divisions: One big, happy family division

I'm realizing there is a matchplay void in Seattle so here is everyone's chance to play a super fun type of disc golf. This will run similar to an NCAA bracket - you will compete against only one player at a time and work your way up the bracket.

No divisions to speak of, its just $5 and since those who lose are placed into a separate pool (where they can still cash), we won't really need divisions. Everyone is guarenteed to play at least 2 matches (double elimination).

Sign up now by pm'ing me or posting and I'll start filling the bracket with a random number generator. Will add as an attachment if I can.

PLAYER LIST (will be randomly put into the bracket a few days before the tourney):
1. Andrew Rivers
2. Sheila Teves
3. Kyle Sutherland
4. Aaron Thornfinsson
5. Toby Cheff
6. Thomas Little
7. Jesse Ingram
8. Tim Coye
9. Robert LaPlaunt

Great idea. If you are planning for 18 hole rounds that could be a lot of golf for a short day. If you get 64 that is 6 rounds to get a winner. I am in but suggest 9 hole matches I would rather not climb 6 rounds at terrace. You are the man andrew!

Ah yes I forgot, one more twist to this whole deal is that the rounds will run "turbo" style to make sure we have plenty o'daylight.

First round - 12 holes
Second - 12 holes
LUNCH
Third - 9 holes
Fourth - 7 holes
Fifth - 5 holes
Final - Sudden death

Maximum # of holes = 44 holes unless you go into overtime in any of your matches

Hey kats, Im interested. What needs to be done in order to get in on this? Let me know. Id be stoked to try out a new format. Its not based on your score for the round, but the number of holes you win, right? Great idea.

I will say though if I get pitted up against anyone on this list it will be money well spent, winning or losing doesn't matter, the vast amount of knowledge gained and the fact that it will be tons of fun will be well worth it, besides I'm the best turbo putter on this list so far, that I know of :p

Not bad Adnrew, I think you're around %50 success rate in spelling names on the players' list.
I'd feel bad that you're cheating me out of one of my f's, but I think Sheila's missing an 'i', and not sure about Aaron's last name...
All jokes aside, I think you should do this at North Park!!

Funny guy, right here! However, I'm not sure where to add an extra "i" to Sheila's name :nahnah:

Yeah, I'd love to do this at North Park but the rumor is that we can't take over the park for tourney's. We'll see how this one works out but I think North Park would be a great venue for matchplay.

I would offer a suggestion that you do at least five holes for the fifth round. 3 holes for match play could be VERY arbitrary depending on which hole you're playing, and could be quite unfair.

Also, you might want to stick with odd numbers, so you don't have to deal with any ties along the way. I would suggest...

RD1 - 13 holes
RD2 - 11 holes
RD3 - 9 holes
RD4 - 7 holes
RD5 - 5 holes

That said, sounds like a fun event!

I hear you on the 3 holes part, it will definitely increase the luck/randomness factor but at the same time I want to a) pump up the pressure a bit for the final rounds, b) encourage those who get knocked out to watch a bit of the last matches (but not have to sit around for a lot of holes), and c) finish before dark while giving as many as possible a chance to play a lot of holes.

If everyone was paying and playing for lots of money - I'd say 9 holes would be the minimum. I'm open to suggestion if people have a big problem with it, but my inclination is to leave the short matches. My plan is also to have short matches do a little bit of a safari course for that round and the finals and it sounds like it might be wise to make it as fair as possible.

Odd numbers unfortunately do not solve the tie problem as for example in a 3 hole match you can both win a hole and push (split) one hole which leaves the score tied at the end.

Yes, of course, you are correct. Missed that!

I still think that have a minimum of 5 holes would be a good idea though. It won't add too much time, and it will do a lot toward the fairness of the event. For example, I am left handed, and if I was doing well going into the final 3 holes, and happened to have to play those three holes on three dominant righty hyzer oriented holes, I would be a little irritated, considering the skill separation from throwing an excellent anhyzer to an excellent hyzer.

I have played in quite a few match play events, and I've never played with less than 7 holes, and even that was pushing it, giving me very little time to catch up after a couple of unfair holes.

Chris is RIGHT, Terrace is mostly righty holes(I know, I know, whaaaa)-- not the fairest of courses for those side-armers.... not to mention us left-handers with no side-arm drive. If you held it at Lakewood or Seatac it would be easier for the guys from the south to attend, and in my opinion these courses would be better suited for this type of event... just a thought.

Regardless of where it's held it sounds like alot of fun!

p.s. Drew, I thought perhaps Sheiila's last name was missing an eye(i).

Hey Andrew, will there be a method for placement in the lower bracket, or will it be random as well?

Yeah, the weather does look good - crossing my fingers we don't see any big changes. Based on the list of those planning on attending, it looks like we'll more realistically have a bracket of 32 rather than 64. All this means is that I'll probably have slightly longer matches AND probably have more consolation brackets so people can keep playing. Payout will still go only to those who place highly in the top brackets though so even if you win the really low brackets - probably more for pride.

I'll think about it a little bit and see how it might pan out.

I'm not playing to win money, I never go to tournaments/events for that purpose. I come for meeting and playing with new people or people I haven't played with much. To me the first two matches would be the same as any match after that, so I would rather be playing. $5 for a disc golf lesson. :)

If you wanna be a groupie, go ahead.Pfffttph. Wow, I don't see why a friendly, down-to-earth guy would jump to such an insulting conclusion. I know you've been around the disc golf block a few times, so how is it that you can't appreciate a less-experienced golfer's interest in seeing how some skilled players (schmucks, if you will) approach the course that just got the best of him twice?

And sillybizz, we're both thinking of it as a $5 lesson, but we're at odds over how to make the most of the opportunity. I feel as though I'll learn more watching the best than by playing with someone else who, like me, ended up in the second consolation bracket. :chinscratch:

Seemed like people enjoyed the change of pace with the matchplay format - thanks for coming out everyone. I've attached jpegs of all the brackets to this post for those who are interested to see how it all went down :jumpspin: (FYI - You may have to hold CTRL while rolling up on the mousepad to zoom in to see the names well enough)

Tim: Hopefully you'll be registering soon - today was might prove to be a good test run for later. One of my favorite tournaments was a giant matchplay tourney in Madison called "Capital Cup". 128 people all in a giant matchplay bracket! Way fun, would be really cool to do something similar here over a weekend in the summer. Just an idea at this point, I haven't really thought about it yet.

Pfffttph.

Back in the olden days, there were no 'skilled players' to watch. I guess that is why I cannot appreciate your interest. We learned by throwing. I always had a disc in my hand or nearby. Playing catch is the single best thing anyone can do to learn how to throw. Period. Learn how to throw by throwing.
On a 150' or longer shot, all I think about is playing catch with the basket.

I will be there to donate my $5-- bringing my C game -- sore thumb-- no grip and no confidence...

To be fair to the rest of us, you should have clarified that you meant your C-Bracket game, and that those "handicaps" were just meant to lull us all into false confidence... just joshin, nice work Toby.
