I just registered and donated some money to this, hopefully everyone donates 10-25 dollars so that this calapults DG into the mainstream faster...

Right on! This will give me a reason to turn on the TV... er, sort of.
I bet I'll be able to get a few of my casual DG friends to check this out since it has a "no donation" option. Then if they get a couple of their friends interested, and those friends each get a few of their friends to tune in, and so on, everyone in the world will finally see how awesome our sport is! Or more likely, the server would be overwhelmed and crash, and we'd look really lame. Maybe the PDGA's projection of 5-10,000 is enough of a goal for now. Still, I'm going to try to singlehandedly boost it up to 10,004. :seeya:
On a serious note though, for anyone who, like me, will be trying to persuade some of their less hardcore-DG comrades to give this live broadcast a gander, it might be wise not to hype it up TOO much... keep in mind, this will be first time this exact feat is attempted, and someone who is accustomed to watching TV shows on their computer or ball golf on TV (both of which are produced with MUCH bigger budgets than the PDGA is packing) may have very high expectations as far as picture quality, bandwidth/speed, camera angles, etc. which this groundbreaking event may not be able to live up to. The best approach might be similar to: "Hey, disc golf is finally getting something mainstream-ish, and I'm really excited about this! Would you mind supporting me and my grassroots sport by creating a free account and tuning in when you have some spare time?" Sponsors are very interested to see just how large a demographic programming like this appeals to, so we definitely want the numbers at large, but we also don't want people going in harboring expectations like "the picture is going to be crystal clear full screen and there won't be any bugs or delays or anything!" Of course the PDGA may totally knock this out of the park and everything will run 100% smooth and we'll all have our socks wowed off. But just in case, let's not set the bar too high... that way we can still clear it by A LOT!!
Oh man I can't wait for USDGC!

I will continue to encourage people to donate $10 to this cause... if only 10k disc golfers across america put up 10 bucks, that's ummm 100,000! We have to invest before we can expect ROI in the mainstream...

The technical side of the broadcast should be under control from the company that actually does these online broadcasts regularly. The PDGA is mainly responsible for providing the content. So as long as the content from the event and interviews is there, it's my understanding the company putting it on the Internet (IPTV) has the bandwidth to handle the demand. We'll soon see.

I'm not watching this this, but is the John you're referring to John Duesler? If so, he's not exactly known for speaking well either. I'm kind of surprised they don't have Billy Crump doing the commentary. It took me a little while to adjust to him on other videos, but he actually does a pretty good job of commentating, and has some funny Crumpisms thrown in there too.

Much better coverage today, less camera wobble, and the exposure was better. Now as to noodles and other such stuff, well this style of coverage has a ways to go, but it's so much better than nothing. Maybe we'll see more of this type of coverage for the 2010 NT.

They don't have wireless connections for live covereage so holes 1, 3, 17 & 18 are the only ones close enough for the long cables to reach. Any shots of other holes will not be live but you should see more of them on tape delay.

... I'm kind of surprised they don't have Billy Crump doing the commentary. It took me a little while to adjust to him on other videos, but he actually does a pretty good job of commentating, and has some funny Crumpisms thrown in there too.
Ask and you shall receive.
Day 2, 82:35 into brodacast --
Dave: "Manabu is an amazing player for someone of such small stature. I think he won the distance competition at worlds this year, didn't he Billy?"
Crump: "That is absolutely amazing -- the guy dudn't weigh a buck-fifty soakin' wet, Dave."
88:00 in --
Crump: "And uh, to get back to our hot scores thus far carded today, Michael Downs (62), he's out of Flagstaff, AZ, and Woooh! he could eat him a hot dog tasting like ribeye for lunch after a round like that, Dave."
The list goes on and on...

ummmm..... the new post on the PDGA website says more than 7,400 disc golfers chimed in to watch USDGC via the internet and less than 1,000 donated to the cause... this infuriates me! Are we that FKING CHEAP?! We cry cry cry cry cry:waaah: like babies when we fail time and time again to be accepted into the mainstream but refuse to help close the gap when the opportunity rises? Now I know why the server crashed on the first day, all these "want everything but give nothing" peeps crammed the free portal... I thought for sure worse case scenario 30 percent of the viewers would donate $10, but I guess that was too steep and the PDGA should have made sure there was an option to donate less than that... But less than 15 percent?! Good *&#$! I, by myself, have donated at least $500 to various players, organizations, and causes related to Disc Golf this year alone... I would expect better from the disc golf community in times of need, like the donation to the live feed. I was hoping we would supass $100,000 in donations easily to show we are serious, and would for sure guarantee at least all the majors be done in this format in 2010.... again we failed to show we realllly want to elevate the media given to our sport... dang it.... I guess that trip to Chipotle or Mickey D's was more important to the budget... Next time, skip breakfast and donate! I know where you live, I'll find you.... :cop:

I think it is fantastic that 1000 people stepped up to donate (nearly 15%), considering that they were also given an option to watch it for free. This means a minimum of $10,000 was raised. Raising that kind of money in our sport right now is an accomplishement.
Do I wish it was more? Hell, yes. I'm actually disappointed that only 7400 people watched the broadcast. I was hoping it would be much higher.

Agreed. I wouldn't blame disc golfers for being cheapskates (though we are, in many aspects). I'd say it's more of a reflection on how people expect most anything on the internet to be free these days...do you think sites like youtube, gmail, pandora, etc. would be so popular if you had to pay for them?

i didn't donate. i am a broke college student who doesn't have the money to. not everyone is some hotshot big billed job holding man such as yourself. stop complaining. the whole point of donating is that its optional. if there was a mandatory fee then it probably wouldn't of had the 7400 viewers that it did. you should be saying "wow we had 7400 viewers! isn't that a great! Can you imagine how cool it will be next year?! Thanks so much for everyone who did donate!".
give it time dude, im sure someday Chipotle or Mickey D's will be sponsoring a major event :D

heh, i am a glass half full guy, big time, believe me, and it's $10, not $100... so therefore no excuse in the world can be acceptable from anyone who managed to register to watch the event, even broke college students, I have 8 years of college expirence, I know where the money goes :whistler:
Yes I think it's great we got at least $10,000 but that is not something we can advertise to future sponsors or even in articles on the USDGC because those unaware of disc golf will not be impressed by this small number as opposed to something over $100,000... And yeah I agree, only 7,400 registered viewers? We have more PDGA members than that and I know there has to be at least 25,000 non PDGA members in America alone, interesting.... But it's a step in the right direction, just hope it was enough to get them to do more tournaments next year, starting with the Memorial... And "give it time" was said 20 years ago, yet we are in the same place... sometimes a push is needed...
Example: a year ago when I was selected as the TD for ODDGA for the 2009 year, I was told "don't expect big things", "give it time", "your expectations are too high"... I pushed and pushed and pushed... My goals were met, people became believers and dropped the laid back attitude and joined the bandwagon. Now a year later, these are what we accomplished...
Broke the record for registered players at an ODDGA tournament - Twice *only have 4 tournaments yearly - this is our 6th year*
Broke the record for masters registered at an event
Broke the record for women registered for the year
Got a COURSE in the ground and opened! *before 2009, the projected opening date was in 2011!*
Broke the record for payout in EVERY division by more than 50% at ODDGC *thanks to all the hole sponsors and ODDGA sponsors Of course! but who had to believe and work to get those sponsors, the pusher, not the laid back guy*
Broke the record for new members and renewals and total active members
Had a raffle with prizes totaling over $1500 - never had a raffle in ODDGA history.
Expenses were 10x more than first 5 years combined, and still ended up profiting for the year plus more than 1k in merchandise and property added to ODDGA inventory...
I could go on and on about how DDGA has grown too in the past year...
But the point is, excuses get you no where, investment and preseverence show progress and people will join and help push the ball faster and farther...
Now some of you might say, good $#*& Snap is a pushy jerk, some might say heck yeah go go go...
Think about this, you can be either of 2 people, the one that makes excuses and calls me the jerk and hold back the sport that we all love, or realize that the next time the opportunity appears to elevate the sport, you do something to help...
The courses you play at everyday, didn't pop up magically...

Money in sports isn't made from donations it is made from sponsors. The next time they decide to do this they now have some selling power to give us what we really want; commercials. I wasn't able to watch or donate but I am sure the $10000 raised was enough to cover expenses. I see this as a win win. Bring on the future!

It takes time to grow all of this stuff... But I agree with snap... disc golf doesn't make any dramatic steps forward until people start making money off of it. Private courses, event organizers, media... it will all come if we are willing to vote with our dollars.
I think there is room for both pay to play and free park courses. But if we want this thing to grow faster we need to put our money where our mouths are.

Call me crazy but I'm going to side with Ol Bob on this debate, I don't really want to see future tournaments sponsored by Coca-Cola or McDonalds, I think that the sport can grow through grassroots efforts like this, through individual donations, hard work and great community organizations like Stumptown dg, and with sponsors like Next Adventure, who come out and represent, not just pile in cash. With big sponsors comes big expectations, they're going to want to see disc golf change into some neatly-trimmed game resembling ball golf (IMO).
Huge props to the USDGC though, up here at college I got a number of non-players to watch a bit and it definitely got them stoked to try out disc golf.:yay:

I don't want huge outside the sport sponsors either. My point about the lack of donations to the USDGC live feed project is that there is no money that can be carried over to next year's possible projects... and when i said chipotle and mickey D's, i was referring to the money spent on food instead of the $10 donation... USDGC was our chance to do grass root fundraising, keep the money in our own sport without outside help and more than 85 percent of the people decided it wasn't worth $10?
I just want to see more effort from inside the community, every little bit helps... i have no intentions of creating a "two sided debate", but more of a brain fart session, stink it up boys...

Lucky Mud is not "my" course, though I hold a stake in it. It's a group effort, even if the group is small. We definitely have a tip jar, and it produces reasonably well. Beyond being a course, it's a home to people and animals. I hope it gets a good long run.

I don't think you have anything to worry about, Bob. Even if the sport did happen to blow up, I still think the Mud would remain the Mud as we know and love it.
Big business getting involved doesn't necessarily mean that it'd wreck house through the whole scene. Just because we have Safeco Field doesn't take all the neighborhood baseball diamonds away.
One of my friends has scouted out land around our area that's owned by Boeing that would supposedly make a great course (only have his word for it). If Boeing wanted to turn that into a top notch course, and even charge a reasonable fee for it, I'd be all for that.

As a player that plays for cash I think the more cash that is given to a tourney the better. I would love to be able to support my family by throwing frisbees in the woods. If a corporate sponsor coming in to the sport would make that possible it's all for the better. I think that most open players would agree. If mcd's wants to donate $10k or more to a tourney I would be greatful but I still wouldn't eat their food.
If you are a member of the pdga or a local club you are supporting the grassroots effort that has been happening for years. We don't have the funds as a culture to do it ourselves or it would already be done.
