Preparations are underway for The Umpqua Valley Championships. We are planning trips down to the course to work on the layout and camping setup. Unfortunately Group Camp A has been reserved this weekend already by a family camping trip. Players may only camp in the Group Camp B. This is the larger area toward the fairway of 18. The camping road that bisects the group camp area is the boundary between Group A and Group B. The strip of camp-spots that back up to the hillside are off-limits. Also, as a result of this, we are imposing a strict curfew of 10PM. No in-appropriate behavior will be tolerated. Disqualification from the event and/or expulsion from the park may result. This comes straight down from the Douglas County Parks Dept. new policy for Disc Golf events at Whistlers Bend. I will happily forward you the information they have sent me regarding the new rules. Thank you in advance for your cooperation in keeping Whistler's Bend Oregon's crown jewel of Disc Golf Courses.
Personally, I am looking forward to this event unlike any other in the past. I have very fond memories of this park, including my 16th birthday party (my first cashing PDGA Pro event). We are going to have awesome late summer weather along with the beautiful Umpqua river to swim float. Jump in at the Group Camp and take a float to the Riverside Camp Ground (showers & bathrooms).
Please get in touch with me directly if you would like to help in any way. Thanks for everyones support.

Who's going down? Whistlers in August will be awesome, the ground is soooooo hard, can you say roller? Skip? Cool river to jump into after the round? This should be a fun time. I talked with Andrew the other night and it looks like they will have a 27 hole layout planned. Pro's will play the 27 twice and a round of 18. AMs will play 18 twice and a round of 27. Added holes at the Top of the World. All fun stuff! So who's going?

Initially I thought I could not attend Jet Wash, Umpqua, (nor Calapooia) due to a planned family trip. However, now the trip is in question, and I have signed up for Calapooia just in case, but it still leaves the dilemma:
Jet Wash or Umpqua?
Both courses are great, Seatac is probably a little tougher, but Whistler's is probably a little more spectacular. Both TDs are great, Guy probably has a little more more experience, but Andrew is probably a little more involved and motivated. I am really torn on this one. Probably the tipping point will be the fact that my Mom lives in Glide, and I really should go visit her! Also, no camping at Seatac. I hate to miss Guy's event - it's always a great event at a great course, but 27 holes at Whistler's Bend in August    !!! ???

(I just wanted to keep the dilema alive).
I wish I had the same dilema. Either way, you'll get great golf. You can't lose!

I believe we are at 95% certain that we will be at the UVC. Oh... and by we, I mean Jamie and I and Stern. Will know more within a week or so.
VERY hopeful that this works out. Maybe I should contact Andrew and ask if we can get in? :)

Hey Everyone,
Just a heads up on the progress of the event. We are meeting the park manager out at the course on Friday to discuss possible added holes. The plan is to be there all weekend (Friday-Sunday). Any and all volunteers are welcomed to come out. I for one am going to be working in the morning, relaxing on the river in the afternoons, and playing golf in the evenings. Please get in touch with me if you would like to come down. Or I'll just see you on Friday before the event. Thanks

Got confirmation today that my caddy will be there. Now to tear it up and get revenge on the course for what it did to me at the NWO. :shooting:
On another note, there is a wildfire blazing pretty darn close to Whistlers. Lets hope they get a handle on the fire real soon.

Weather and Skies at Whistlers have been pretty nice. We had a couple really bad days of smoke and pollution in the air... but the last 3 days have been decent. I imagine by the time the tournament is here the fire will mostly be contained and out.
Good friend of mine runs a crew for First Strike out of Roseburg. He has been giving me intel on the situation. :)

I will take on Bob and any other challengers down at whistlers! Bring your rafts and life vests and hope for good weather so we can float the river a bunch.
Looks like Andrew posted the registration list at PDGA.com

I am so excited to have some of the top WA pros coming down for a weekend at Whistlers, lets get this tourney full, finally we can play there when the weather might be hot enough to swim and the ground might be hard enough for some nice rollers.
Find me at Calapooia, I will be representing Andrew there with some flyers or sign up online. I can't wait for this one!

Ok, here's the challenge Nate:
I'll stay in whatever division I am in. (not really sure what my wife signed me up for)
You give me a handicap...........for Team Golf it is 1 stroke for every 10 ratings points.
I believe you play the 27 hole layout twice and I only play it once. So we score only the original 18 holes.
If you win you call it.........what do I lose?
If I win, you wear the "Hat" for the Eugene Celebration.
What do you say?

So the question is... Can Bob stay within 26.4 strokes of Nate?
When he first told me about this idea I said no way. But after watching Bob throw the other night, I'm not so sure... Nate might look awfully good in that hat. He may not give it back, Bob.
Flash
August 6th, 2009, 02:57 PM
That is a fair assessment as Whistlers played about 9-10 points per stroke at the recent Tournament there depending on rounding.
GNWO 2009 (http://www.pdga.com/tournament-results?TournID=8900&year=2009&include_ratings=1#Open)
During the event Nate averaged a 51 while Bob averaged 80.7 strokes. Which is about 29.7 strokes. Now both of these fine gentleman have improved their game in the last 4 months but who has improved more?
If a rating update were to come out before the event I am certain that Nate will be increasing his Player rating but Bob has not been playing many events lately so the gap could be the true difference in their average at the GNWO 2009.

Interesting offer Bob, I am not sure if I can bet against one of my own students, now that you know my secrets you must be improving at an incredible rate! I will think about it, bring the hat, I can't commit to wearing it if it is too loose and might hurt my score at the Celebration. If it fits though, we can do battle.
I will talk to Andrew about getting the pre reg list back up, this event will be a good one. Please get signed up soon to make things easier on the TD. Thanks everybody.

We exchanged emails a while back and the news was positive.
But now it's a week before the event and no registration list, some grumbling on these boards and no posts from Andrew in a while. Not trying to sound critical, just very much wanted to know all was well. So, if the venerable Yose says all is well, then I believe all is well.
Back to the Bend for the first time in four years!

The event is still on as planned. Signups will be taken on Friday before the event throughout the day. <<NO ONE WILL BE TURNED AWAY>> call me if you have any questions
I had the registration list up last week for a day or two. When I went to check on it really quick before I left for the weekend it was gone. The PDGA didn't have any explanation for me and simply said I should do it again. I couldn't find the time before I was leaving. It will be back up soon.
I'm going to be out there on Thursday doing some course preparation if anyone wants to come camp out. I want to keep everything positive but I'm starting to wonder about everyone's trust in new TD's I've been around Disc Golf in the NW for almost 15 years. Maybe it's time to start believing some of the things I've been saying. Come out and have a great time this weekend at Whistler's. It's going to be awesome weather and the river is prime.
On a side note, I chose to take this past weekend off to go to the NW World Reggae Festival. Being around such a positive environment made me reflect on all the time I spend on Disc Golf. I hope we can all bond together and make this more of a universal effort. It seems like any change to the way things have been done is met with some quick criticisms. With the Oregon Series dissolving I thought it was a great time to revive the NW Series. The first event at Alton Baker Park was a great time despite a very low turnout. These events need new and veteran players alike to really succeed. Please show your support in anyway possible. Much Love,
Andrew Rich

Drew,
First of all thank you for running this series. I appreciate having the option to play tournament disc golf almost every weekend on some of the most beautiful and challenging courses in the state. I will be there this weekend, and apologize for not being able to preregister (I know that makes preparation and organization more difficult).
Unfortunately, the essence of a forum is that ideas get debated and due to human nature differences of opinion are often highlighted. It is often easier to vocalize what needs to be changed than encourage or support something that works well. Having said that I am confident that criticism and open discussion will make the sport better in the long run albeit creating potential temporary misunderstandings.
Thank you for your contribution to the sport, I appreciate you and all others that donate their valuable time to ensure the rest of us can have memorable experiences.

With all due respect, I think you are missing out on a few points here. Its not that people are just throwing around criticisms without reason, but rather people are getting used to attending events that are very well managed. The reason I didn't attend the Alton Baker Park event was because for the longest time there were almost no online updates on the event. The online registration took a long time to get up, and the pre-registration list never got online (much like the Whistler's event). Similarly it took forever to get the results up as well. These little things might not seem that important in the grand scheme of things, but these are the details that make us players wonder what the hell is really going on.
I hope you understand that I'm not here to rag on you or your event. I just thought I would point out a few of the issues that I think might be making people tentative about attending these events. Remember, I was one of the first people to sign up for this event. Whatever the case, if you run a tight ship, word of mouth will get around and you'll see the events filling up at the same rate as the other more established events.

I can't play this weekend because of other obligations but it sounds like a whole lot of fun! I still haven't played Whistler's in the summer.:waaah:
I play a lot of tournaments, I sign up early, and I try to support them in the ways I can through sponsorship, helping out, or just thanking the TD and staff. I've found that there a few relatively easy and very important things any TD can do to improve the chances for a well-attended and succesful event:
Get the word out early and get a flyer out when you can.
If you use a message board, dgrus, or other website to publicize your event, maintain weekly contact with the people asking questions at that venue.
Post sign-up information as soon as you can and when Titledisc or the PDGA inevitably drops the ball or screws up, let people know that you know about it and any other info you have.
Post the pre-reg list early and often.
Remember that the disc golf grapevine is fast and far-reaching. Both positive and negative experiences and things said aloud about others in the community get around pretty damn fast. It's best to keep your options open.
I think everybody appreciates the wealth of tournaments we have the option to play in Oregon, especially this year, and hopefully we all remember to be thankful that new and old TD's are stepping up to make them happen. I appreciate your efforts Andrew and I wish I could play more events this summer.
Check out what Stumptown or Dion is doing with their events this year in terms of communication through this website - one-stop shopping for players to get info, and full, well-enjoyed events.

I agree with everything Matt and Jeff just said. Look at the tournaments that have been successful. What do they have in common? Among other things, the TDs maintain an active presence on this site where a large number (currently almost 600) of potential participants can be found.
It's an age-old adage: It pays to advertise!

For the record, my original post quoted above was edited by Jeff in order to remove a quote from his original post which he subsequently edited out of his original post, NOT because of anything I wrote.
No problem Jeff, but it'd be cool to ask first or at least explain when editing a non-offensive post. I would have edited it out for you myself :)
Just trying to keep the peace.

I appreciate all the feedback from everyone. Trying to tour this year and run events has proven to be more of an undertaking than expected.
Stepping back and looking at all the time I put into Disc Golf has really made me think about the time we have on this Earth. I love hanging with everyone in and around Disc Golf. It has molded me into the individual I am today.
Nothing pleases me more than explaining to people what it is I actually do. i.e. Travel around the country selling clothes and playing Disc Golf. Sounds pretty cool from the outside looking in. It is sometimes hard to realize all the sacrifices one must take in order to go after this dream. I can't imagine my life without Disc Golf playing a huge role.
I will continue to strive to keep this dream alive. Bringing together the NW again as one force is a huge step. It is my belief that many hands make light work. We have a huge opportunity to showcase our natural beauty here in the NW. Let's all get together and show the rest of the country, and world, what they're all missing out on. Thanks again, I look forward to seeing everyone at Whistler's this weekend.

For everybody else it's 6:00 a.m. but for us old timers it's sometime after our lunchtime nap.
I'm really not sure but my best guess would be sometime around 8?

Just wanted to give a shout out to everyone who made the trip down to Whistler's this weekend. I had a blast floating the river with you all. The weather could not have been better!!! I'm already looking forward to next years Umpqua Valley Championships. They are sure to be even bigger and better. Big shout out to Dion The Whip Arlyn for slamming an Ace on Hole #9, Getting a sick Birdie from Tee 16 to Hole 17 and putting an exclamation point on the weekend with a Birdie finish on Hole 18. Very Nice Dion, even though you throw for the dark side..... Thanks for making this a great experience as a tournament director. Peace

I had a great time this weekend. Thanks Andrew for putting this series on. I'm exhausted, even having had a caddy all weekend. A special thanks to my nephew for caddying. And for those who don't know, Andrew is a sick and twisted individual. You should have seen the pin positions he us playing. I didn't know some of the new positions existed. They are tough but fun! Lots of fun camping with everyone and looking forward to next year.

Thanks everyone! What a great weekend, Drew - thanks for putting on this killer event. Hope to see more folks at the next one! For anyone who is keeping track, that putt on #17 might be the best putt of my life to date.

Why would this putt be the best of your life to date? It looks like a 60-70 foot putt right? Just curious... and cool picture by far...

Ok, to put this into perspective.
The hole they were playing was from 16s teepad to basket #17. Going in to this hole Nate was leading Dion by three strokes. Nate had a great drive, and Dion uncorked a HUGE hyzer to land about 40-50 from the basket. Nate's upshot put him at the bottom of the hill past the basket. Dion knew that assuming Nate was going to par the hole he HAD to make this putt to get within 2 stokes of Nate with one hole to go. Despite the drop-off behind the basket Dion ran the putt and nailed it dead center. Nate made his upshot but it kicked a little away from the basket leaving Nate with an awkward uphill 25' putt. Nate came up a little short on the putt and when it dropped, it stood up and rolled all the way back down the drop-off. When all was said and done Dion carded a two and Nate carded a six, leaving Dion ahead by a single stroke. Dion went on the birdie 18 and win it by 2 strokes. It was most certainly terrible luck for Nate to have that putt roll away like that, but Dion hit that putt when it mattered the most.

I was gonna say, "What a crappy drive!". Thanks for putting that into perspective. Clutch, Dion. Nice work.

Well... we picked a fine time to leave... Dion has to go and do something like that and we missed it.
Great finish, Dion. Solid play all weekend.
And yes... this tournament was a blast. The float and the golf were amazing and I cannot wait to get back to Whistler's soon.

Nate had a bad drive i believe, I don't think he made it over the road.

Ahhhh now that makes sense, adding the sexton part of the story... I was thinking, awesome birdie from 16 tee pad but surely Dion has made some longer putts than that... ahhh with the title on the line and making up 4 strokes in a single hole... now that's something...
Note to Sam... most people tend to wait until the tournament is "finished" before leaving so they know who won and all of that hot stuff... ;)

Sam was not in control of his departure time. Nor was I. It was Mrs. Stern who made that call, and despite our missing out on the spectacular final 9, it was still the right call The Gibsons knew going in that we had to leave as early as possible. That growler of Calapooia Simco Springs IPA was certainly worth waiting around for, though!

Can someone shed some light or do you have a picture of the final leader board?

Round ratings?
I love the 2 word posts.... If you would just be patient then you would realize that the reason they aren't rated is because the Ratings Update is in process. The tournaments that are to be included in the update are not available for Round Ratings. (Note: The Vibram Open is also without ratings). The ratings will be up on Sunday when the new ratings updates come out. Thanks for being so patient.

At this point it's out of Andrew's hands. It's all on the PDGA. As soon as the ratings updates come out (planned for Sept. 1st) then the official round ratings will appear.
Sounds like it was a fun tournament, sad I had to miss it.
