I am going to Worlds for the first time in my career of playing disc golf. I have heard about the worlds event since the first year I started playing but could never seem to make it happen. There was always work, school or family that prevented me from going. I almost did not make it this year either but with constant reminders from Mr. Hagerty and the graces of my boss at work I was able to get the mandatory week of vacation switched from the week after the fourth to the last week in July for Worlds.

This year the worlds is in Kansas City and people that attended the 2003 Amateur World Championships still comment about worlds in Kansas City. I knew that if I was going to make it to a worlds event this is the one to make. The courses are what people are excited about and from the preview of the courses that I have seen I can see why, compared to the worlds courses used in the past few years, especially for the Amateurs, theses course will test not only accuracy but distance and course management.

The reason why I am writing is to know why more people are not going from Oregon. I would have expected more Pro players to make the journey given the location and courses being used for the competition.

I see that we have Six Pros from Oregon going: Dave Feldberg, Avery Jenkins, Ben Van Dusen, Kirk McAllister, Melody King and Jeff Hagerty.

On the Am side we have 5 going: Peter Belizi, Jason McGrew, Kevin Watson, Terry Schuler, and myself.

See you guys in KC!!!!

still not believing that i'm going, so maybe the last two weeks won't be such a wait, wish i could take more time off work so i could drive, planes make me very sick, just driving in the car can make me sick, so hopefully i wont need to recoupe time before golfing, the last time i flew to vegas i spent the first three days in my room because i had no equilibrium, great to see another person representing the northwest:rockon:

Time & Money! The two just don't always allign. I'd love to attend Worlds but probably not as a player. I'd love to represent the NW Disc Golfers as an Ambassadour maybe. Shake hands, kiss babies, hand out stickers, sign autographs, AND see some amazing golf.

Here are some seriously cool and decent maps of the courses used at worlds this year.

Second post from the top, just click the links for the courses you are playing. These are the same one up on the PDGA now but these are a little easier to get to and move around in.

Good Luck on THAT one......
1) Its SUMMER
2 Your going to Kansas City
3) Its ALWAYS Hot & Humid in Summer in Kansas City

You can BET on LOTS of bugs, Rain, Lightning, maybe even a delay or cancelled round due to EXTREME weather. :wink2:

I would suggest requesting a room that faces to the west, that way you can watch the "light show" as it moves closer to you. VERY impressive if you have never been to the mid-west. :jumpspin:

Good Luck to ALL Oregonians.....bring home some hardware.

Ummm since we just had nationals in south illinois, the humidity was a huge factor right off the bat... Drank about 40 oz of water every 9 holes and still felt dehydrated and my urine was dark yellow the whole way, I even drank tons of water a week before to get into good hydration and it wasn't enough. The body takes up to 7 days to be hydrated and less than a day to get dehydrated... drink that water and be careful with the beer...

hopefully nothing will change to much as far as the forecasts are going, looks like mid to lower 80's for highs and low 70's for lows, some days have possible thunderstorms in them, very lucky to not have higher highs and lows, humidity will still be there I'm sure, I have already started drinking a little more water than I usually do. I drink a few glasses a day already so I'm hoping that will help me, the light bugs will make a good night light for anyone camping, just put a couple in a jar, they usually don't make it till morning so that may not be animal friendly, I'm getting so stoked, my wife has some things packed already, :chug:

Interesting,

I downloaded the player lists and sorted the 4 advanced pools L, K ,M & N by rating and the top 4 Advanced Amateurs are all in Pool K. Coincidence or do you believe there is some prediction here as to who will win the event.

The pools are well divided and have equal skill levels across all pools so I am not worried about ratings being skewed but thought it interesting that the best are in the same pool. Rumor is that David Wiggins Jr will be our next champion but I am guessing the higher rated locals will not go down without a fight.

Yes, you can request to be in a pool with your statemates, or whomever you like. There is a spot for it on the entry form, you fill in the names of others you would like to be pooled with. It's fun, you get to see more of friends both local and distant, and facilitates car-pooling: at least until the Great Shuffle! (Hint: make sure your friends also list you on their entry forms!)

Thanks for the info Gawain, unfortunately I registered well after Jason did but it all worked out.

I did request Jason McGrew as a travel mate as we are sharing a car but just thought it funny we all made the same pool out of 4 possible pools. I am glad we are all in the same pool as I have never met Kevin Watson and Peter is a cool dude and shoots some pretty hot rounds!

Hey Guys,

I started a Blog under some intense suggestive prose from my family to document my adventure at worlds so if you are interested here is my blog

Flash's Worlds Adventure (http://2009amateurworlds.blogspot.com/)

I hope to provide multi-daily posts and updates. I will include as many pictures as I can to help those back home understand what disc golf is like in KC.

I fly out tonight at midnight with Jason McGrew and we should be playing sometime around 11 am on Friday. I think we will go play Shawnee Mission and then head up to WyCo disc golf course for their Friday league night, Fact has it that their Ace Pot is up to $1017.00 and they pay it all out for an ace.

Here are the maps of Shawnee (http://www.kcfdc.org/docs/Course_Maps/SMPoverhead%20copy.pdf) and WyCo (http://www.kcfdc.org/docs/Course_Maps/wycooverhead.pdf)

Make sure you find someplace to stay in Ogden before you get there or at least be prepared to spend money on a named place. The worst motel I ever stayed at was there. It is a horrible place to stop and it is the only time I have gone to bed scared for my car and my safety. The shower was also too nasty to even think about stepping in. I really wished I would have stopped in SLC when I was on my way though.

Oh holy crap... How old is this Wiggins kid again? 15? And he threw 567 feet. No biggie... except that it looks like he threw farther than any other American there, Avery Jenkins included. He would have finished 3rd in the Open Men competition.

Oh... and he finished the putting competition with 225 points - 2nd only to Yeti Reading - beating Feldberg and some other pretty good putters.

Unreal... and there is only a RUMOR that this kid is going to win?! Foregone conclusion sounds like a more apt description.

That's a very interesting quote, Scott. Where'd you run across it? It's a bit loopy, and seems like it's probably based on some... questionable statistics... but I'm sure there is some truth the logic. Hey, at least someone in India with some clout is talking about curbing over-population, right??

And man, how excited is everyone that Nate Sexton is in a position to secure himself a final nine (read: top 4) showing at WORLDS if he can find enough strokes to move up two spots in the semis!!! This is some good shit, right here! Stay tuned, and follow the action live tomorrow to the extent you can -- it's really fun! Whatever happens, I'm sure nate will be receiving a very warm welcome home, and many slaps on the back at Calapooia next weekend... that is, if he doesn't decide to take a month off to recover from putting it all out there at worlds!

This is why we need to find a crew that will use three cameras on each hole. The editing then becomes the key. I think Crider is close to being able to put out some of the best DG video there is right now. He just needs a couple more cameras and good cameramen/women.

Hey Everyone, just got back last night and I want to say thank you to everyone for the support and the messages of encouragement throughout the Worlds. It was great to have so many behind me back home. I still can't really believe I ended up 5th, but now I feel like with practice I could someday win the Worlds. I've had alot of people tell me I could do something like this for a long time, and don't know if I really believed it. Now that it is in the books I can't thank the people who have been believing in me from the beginning enough. Certainly my proudest moment in disc golf, can't wait to see everybody this weekend.

That and the fact that you crushed your rating and shot 1034 rated golf might have contributed. So Nate is this finish better than the 5th place finish at the 2008 Japan Open?

Yeah this 5th is way better, the field is much stronger at the Worlds and nobody has the excuse that I beat them because they were using 150g discs. I think once the 3rd round gets rated correctly (the shuffle messed it up) and the semis are included I will have a 1040 average for the 7 rounds at Worlds, 1020's here I come!

2009 Worlds Final Hole of regular Play Gallery (http://s63.photobucket.com/albums/h139/flash_25296/Worlds%20Last%20days/?action=view&current=P1000891-1.flv)

Sorry about the quality it was shot with a hand held point and shoot camera. I just wanted to show that the gallery was large and very involved in the feel of the event. This was the final hole of the regular 9 holes where Avery and Josh both parred and went to sudden death.
