Hey Everybody. We have some great golf planned in the Willamette Valley for all of you who aren't going to worlds this year. We have back-to-back events on the weekend of July 25 and 26, both at Adair Park in Corvallis.
The Willamette Wash
July 25
TD - Erik Smith of Corvallis
Charity event benefiting the Linn Benton Food Share
Last year we raised over $1000.00 for the Food Share and our goal is to beat that this year. This is an incredibly fun event for a very good cause and Erik will post more information soon.
Willamette Open Qualifier (C Tier)
July 26
TD – Dion Arlyn
This event is the first of three planned qualifiers for the Willamette Open. If you plan on making the WO11 than you should make a point of qualifying first! Pre-registration for this event is going to be up on PDGA shortly, the cost is $25.00. I will have all the details and a flyer posted shortly.
It’s going to be a blast of a weekend, with both sanctioned and unsanctioned play. Come support both the disc golf community and the community at large with the WDGC.

Being somewhat of a newbie to the tournament scene I do not know how the qualifiers work. Do you have to attend all three of the qualifiers to qualify for the Willamette Open? If so can you post the dates for the other two, so we can see if we can make those otherwise I guess what is the point in playing in the first.

Since we are left only to speculate here, I would speculate that they are running a series of events to qualify. IF you make it to a certain number of the qualifiers you will have first shot at registration for the WO. If you don't make it to the required number of qualifying events you are at the mercy of cyber sign ups for any remaining open spots. So, if there are 200 spots for the WO and 200 people play in the qualifying events there won't be any spots left for those who can't make to any of the events. If there are 200 spots for the WO and 100 people play in the qualifying events then there would be 100 spots left for cyber sign ups. Theres how I speculate it!

Highly unlikely... :rolleyes2:
Though I haven't talked to Mike for a couple weeks I'm reasonably sure qualifiers will be another way to get into the event as well as raise money for the event. :D

So the more of them you can make the better then maybe. Geeze would be nice to know the other two dates cause the first one is going to be complicated for me to make, but I will find a way I guess cause I really want to play in this tournament.

I also need to add that although it is unlikely that I will be able to play in the qualifying events and may not get a chance now to play the WO, (my fav event)and will pretty dissapointed, I have to give credit to the Willamette Club for being creative and trying to find another way around the ever growing sign up problems with events in the state. I am in support of the series idea!

I think making the Willamette Open an event with qualifiers is friggin' rad. Other than the BSF, I think it's the cream of the crop in Oregon, and if the Willamette club felt like it, they could make it an A-Tier with a national draw (which I think they ought to consider for next year?!).

Let's not speculate. Mike? Registration will be as normal in years' past and this is just a way for people to win their entry into the tournament, right?

The fundraisers for the WO are not true qualifiers. They are spot holders. If you play in any of the three you will have a spot reserved for you and you can register right then and there.
In years past the WO has filled up extremely fast and extremely full. We have filled 3 courses to the max. And we have filled two courses in 2 weeks. We expect similar things to happen this year. The place holder approach seems to be a natural progression to reward those who donate to the tournament and take some of the hassle out of registration.
Dion ran fundraisers last year and got about 30 people to play in the each of the three events. Most of those people played in more than one of the events. From those numbers I don't anticipate more than 60 spots being held from the fundraisers. This will allow around 100 people to register passively from the comforts of their work computers.
I hope this help clears things up.

I think that is what I said! Or meant to! :biggrin2: Mike, I believe you will be surprised. My guess is that you fill the tournament from the qualifiers and possibly still have to turn people away. It's a whole new game this year and a lot of people will play even one event just for the opportunity to get into the WO. NW Disc Golf rocks!

Tenative Dates for the other two qualifers: August 2 (In conflict with Chick Flick) and September 6 (In conflict with Washington Event). My favorite part of this whole thing is leaving people to speculate what it all means when A.) I only posted this an hour ago and B.) I stated that I would post a flyer with all the information shortly. You guys crack me up.
SO...
If you play in any of these events you automatically have a spot held for you the WO
If you play in two or more events and happen to be the best player in your division you can win a paid spot into the WO. This is replacing the "series" aspect of the Adiar Fundraisers last year, but ultimately serves the same purpose, if you win your division then you win paid entry into the WO.
If you can't make any event than you must pre-reg like everyone else! Do everyone a favor and just make it to at least one qualifier!

RABID SPECULATION IS RABID! Dion went to take a crap after his first post and came back to 73 rumor filled speculations.
I think this is a great approach Dion, and not just because I can play in all three. It'll raise money for the WO, more money than last year because people will show up to get a spot. And we love some one-days!

Also, could I be picked up at my residence on the morning of the qualifiers? Please have the driver provide me with a warm (but not too warm) 16 oz. two-shot Mocha, organic of course, chocolate sprinkles, and just a soupçon of the finest Argentinian cinnamon. The lid should be firmly in place but vented on two sides, with the second vent being added to the lid no later than 5 minutes after purchase and no sooner than 3 minutes before picking me up.

I guess if I would have asked Dion to come to my place of residence and pick up my entry fee your post would have made more sense. I didn't but out of the goodness that is me, I will gladly drive you to every qualifier I attend. The only catch is that you will have to take the bus, ride your bike, or ask your mom drop you of at my house! Oh, and since you appear to be from Eugene, you will be required to wear orange during the drive. :biggrin2:

Hey Eric,
I was thinking about just bringing the family by for the food and skipping the golf. Would you like me to bring anything? I can grab desert stuff, chips, whatever. Let me know. Muffins are fine but they may not make it there until lunch. I'm also interested in 1 med and 1 XXL leftover shirt. My kids love it when I wear the one from last year. My 2 year old can sit there for hours pointing and saying "banana", "apple", "what's that daddy?" (the can picture).
Anyway, let me know what I can do to help.

Hey Rick,
Come by anytime and bring food if you want but you don't have to. As far as shirts they will go on a first come first serve basis and I don't expect the 1 medium I have left to last. You probably have a better chance at the 2x unless people want those.
I guess my advice is to come early and golf.:yay:

What happens to the surplus?
I doubt there will be any, but I have yet to do the math on that. Any surplus will pay out further down into the division. for example, the largest division (typically pro at these events) may have two paid entries for the willamette open. This rewads the larger divisions, however, smaller divisions are still garenteed at least one paid entry into WO11. I reserve the right to use excess funds from one division to help cover another.

It comes down to how many folks you beat. The person who beats the most people wins. So, I kinda like my chances as a third degree black belt...of course, we're talking about hand to hand combat here.

I'm guessing that you'll have a surplus. If you have only 60 ppl at each event, that's 60x5x3=900, seems like more than enough for first place in each division, but if the surplus drops down to 2nd and so forth, that sounds good.

Ron----I really want to make the Qualifier on Sunday but I have Relay for Life (which everyone is invited to) in Eugene on Friday and Saturday. I don't know how tired I will be. Is pre-reg required? Forgive me if this answer was in a previous thread.

pre-reg is required, but for you, I'm willing to make an exception :)
Just show up Sunday if you are able to play.

Don't be a wuss. Relay is over at 12 noon Saturday. I'm on two teams and I'll still make it to Adair. One of my team captains hasn't even asked me to sign up for a time to walk yet, so that oughta be real esy.

oh jordan, thats the first thing you learn to defend...
BtW - Saturday/Sunday is going to be a blast. make sure you double dip this weekend and play both the Wash and the Qualifier. If you didn't hear already, I will extend the same courtesy of qualifying to those who participate in the Wash and have an interest in the WO, the only difference being you are ineligable for series payout.
bring it on Adair!

Thank you for that Dion and thank you for your continued support of The Wash and the Linn Benton Food Share.
I have about 150 prizes from about 50 sponsors, food and beer and it is all included with your donations to the Linn Benton Food Share.
Come and get it!
Start the morning off with a round of golf. After that there will be lunch and a prize drawing and raffle, this is the end of the official part of The Wash.
After that, the Susy Sticks tournament will start. This has become the main competition for The Wash and if you haven't played this before, I really can't describe just how much fun it is. If people don't want to participate in the Sticks tournament they are free to golf some more.
After the Susy Sticks tournament I will give out the remaining prizes with a ring of fire.
Basically the more you participate, the more chances you have at the prizes.
See you all this weekend.

Suzy Sticks is so fun. Last year Colin and I went 6-0 and took down Storrs and KC in the finals. Believe it or not there was some tough competition in the WDGC, apparently we have some very talented suzy stick enthusiasts! Doug and Tewa was a super tough match, and Craig Banner probably laid out a dozen times to make catches!

I can't wait to play some Suzy Sticks!
Q:Will Mt. Everett be making an appearance this weekend?:chinscratch:

I think the 1 person you didn't put down was the no show from my first card: Josh Westmoreland, who shot an astonishing 126 the first round(all 7s)!

Ditto that. If you want to know how to run a well-attended, well-enjoyed and well-organized event, just check out what Whip is doing. Good advertising, good communication, responsive to questions and fast on updating pre-reg lists and posting results. The result of that attention to detail: a more than full field of very satisfied players and several hundred dollars raised for WOXI.
Keep up the good work Dijon Poupon Ron Whip Arlyn! :trophy::yay::rockon::cheerleader:
