We're doing it again. We're up against the Rose City Open, but we're $40 cheaper & a lot more fun. Registration forms are available at http://www.nbdga.org/registrationform.pdf & we'll be splitting entrants into our 2 categories again, Pretty Good & Really Good. Hey, it's not quite PDGA level competition but it's still going to be a great time.
We'll have free soft drinks & water delivered to you on the course and a barbeque and beer garden after the tournament while we get the results together for the award ceremony.
We'll also have a KP contest with cool prizes & we're working on some new surprises as well.
Seeya there, GorgeDon

Pretty Good and Really Good.
Maybe hold a REAL tournament with REAL divisions and hold it on a weekend that is not the same as an established tournament and you might get more than a few people out there. Or, you could stick with what you are doing and not grow beyond the dozen or so people you got out there last year.

I thought I would chime in on this one yes it does fall on the same weekend as the RCO but it does fall into line with gorge days so this is why this date was chosen to have this tourney. I would also like to add that for the price the trophies last year were above and beyond you also recieve a t-shirt and free food and beverage. I would suggest this tourney to anyone who is a first time tourney player and would like the experience of a tourney and Sam I know you like to speak your mind and that is cool but due to the BSF the rose city got moved to July instead of June these 2 tourneys didn't even bump heads last year I know because I played in both and had a great time at both so help support the small ones so that they can become big boys and girls.

It think offering another tourney on the RCO weekend is a good idea. With the Pro Division for the RCO closing after in person registration at a park 2 hours away from my home, this might be the only viable option for disc golfers that live outside of the Eugene-Portland areas.

No, it's flat-out subjective -- with a bit of marketing thrown in.
I think that for people who don't take disc golf as seriously as most forum-goers do (which frankly includes most of the disc golfing public), the Gorge Days tournament probably would be more fun. It's more casual and takes up a lot less of one's weekend.

OK. You say subjective. I say ridiculous. And I have been to both types of tournaments, Adam. Have you? :)

I hear a lot of people stating that there are far more non-competitive, non-PDGA, non-tournament disc golfers than there are tournament DGers. On what facts are these statements based? Or are they, as I suspect, merely opinions, based on random observations?

It probably depends on where you golf. Check out Orchard, Greenway, HH, Lunchtime, or even Pier at certain hours and you will find many more "casual players than the usual tournament crowd.

Lets expand on this a bit...
At what point does the person who shows up to a course with one or two discs, once or twice a year, become a full-fledged "disc golfer"?
TreeLove
June 15th, 2009, 03:17 PM
For the purposes of my query, I am willing to consider anyone playing disc golf to be a "disc golfer". I suppose a "tournament disc golfer" would be one who plays in multiple PDGA events.
Joshua Olmsted
June 15th, 2009, 03:27 PM
I can't see why there wouldn't be more casual golfers than tournament players, go out to Pier and on a normal day there will be around 100 golfers and I don't think more than 5 or 6 will be serious players, most of them are just people who play maybe once a month just for fun. I would guess maybe like 500 tournament players in Portland and the number of casual golfers probably numbers in the high thousands rate. Obviously the guess is just based on observations but if the number of tournament golfers outnumbered non-tournament golfers I think our courses would be a whole lot emptier.

I believe that it shouldn't matter what your status is or how many of each group we have in our area we all make choices to play at whatever level we feel comfortable. I know alot of casual golfers and I'm sure the higher level players would rather they stay out of there way but as we all know we don't have a country club for the DG elite that is members only we all want this sport to grow but we at any chance bad mouth anything that doesn't live up to a standard that very few players live by on a day to day basis. I know that it is easier for most people to drag things down but a true leader will build up the small things in life and DG and if you just want to throw your plastic keep your mouth shut about what others are trying to build.

I'm not sure that anyone was really going there. Just some comments that this tournament may appeal to the more casual player and the RCO may appeal to the PDGA regulars.

I don't want it to be thought that I am poo-pooing this tourney. I think it could be run better and be educational for newer players considering a few changes:
A, I think that it would be better for newer players if actual divisions were being used rather than the pretty good-really good model. Education could start right there.
B, I think that it would be more beneficial for newer players to come out and watch the RCO than it would be to participate in this tourney. I would propose a change in weekends - even if it doesn't fall on a special date.
My opinion. And honestly, I don't care if no one agrees or likes it. Welcome to America!
Scotty B
June 15th, 2009, 03:59 PM
Sam I believe that true divisions would be more beneficial also but this being part of the Gorge days it is way casual hence the small entry and the 2 divisions lets all be friends till the end.
Sam
June 15th, 2009, 04:03 PM
Oh... we carry around and throw the same stuff... so we're friends.
I really was trying to be constructive. That said, your divisions were the subject of ridicule last year and that was the major thing I heard about the tournament. Not that that should convince you to change it but you might consider "Pro" "Advanced" and "Amateur". While not official PDGA divisions, it is at least closer and is a model used by many local tournaments.
Whatever you guys decide, have fun and I am sure you will run a great event.

With a lot of things, you can count on an "80/20 rule": 80% of the business comes from 20% of the customers. In disc golf, I suspect that 80% of the rounds are played by 20% of the players -- the same ones who enter tournaments.
So if you're putting on a tournament (or building a course), the question is, do you cater to the players responsible for the greatest number of rounds played (the elite 20%), or to the numerical majority of players? Obviously, it depends on your goal. If it's to create a pro-level course or tourney experience, you go for the elite; if it's to get more families involved and add to the fun at your local festival, you go for the other 80%. On July 12, we're seeing some of each.
And Sam, if you don't want people to think you're poo-pooing this tournament, don't say things like "Maybe hold a REAL tournament."

As the current Trojan TD of the RCO, I say more power to ya! Good for NorthBonnie, I've been wanting to check that course out for a while now. Good for Wortman, we have plenty of players in the area that we can fill up lots of tournaments. We can all get along.

And on a relate note: the Bad Monkey Open is on the same weekend as the Emerald Valley Open. Two PDGA sanctioned events both hoping to have over 90 players (I'm guessing at the number for the EVO). There is plenty of room and golfers to have multiple work parties, multiple leagues and multiple tournaments on a weekend in this VERY strong disc golf community!

Kind of amazed to see such a spirited & wide-ranging discussion springing from our tournament posting. Gotta love forums, eh? I would like to respond to a couple comments in particular.
Sam, my "more fun" comment wasn't meant to be mean spirited, sorry I didn't do a better job of getting that across. Our goal is for everyone to have a good time & get a chance to experience our course. 6 people will walk off with some pretty sweet awards but we hope everyone walks off with a smile.
Our tourney is currently being held in conjuction with the city's Gorge Days celebration which does dictate the date. We are considering holding other events in the future & will make every effort to avoid conflicts with other local events.
We decided to split our entrants into the (apparently) infamous Pretty Good & Really Good categories last year specifically because we are not a pro-level tourney. We asked everyone to classify themselves according to their abilities & warned them that if they won the Pretty Good division with a 6 under par we might call that into question. We ended up with 34 contestants & a mulitple hole playoff to decide the final standings.
Our event is really a celebration of the sport & an effort to introduce our course to more disc golfers more than anything else. We are lucky to live in a beautiful area & have a lot of support from our city & we want to share our good fortune with others.
For those who are playing in the RCO, good luck. For anyone who has that Sunday open, come on out.
Peace to all.

Gorgedon,
Don't take it personally... you got Sam-rolled. Its nothing new around these parts. In fact, most of us are pretty well tempered against it by now.
As the "official" TD of the Rose City Open I can assure you I never for a moment felt like your event was stepping on our toes. I don't see how it could considering its been pretty much full for weeks.
Anyway, have a great event out there. One of these days I'm going to have to make the drive out there to play your course.

How many rounds are being played?
What time do you expect it to be over?

One round, shotgun start at 11am, should be done playing a couple hours after that & then the awards, KP & other contests, & the barbeque/beer garden (not necessarily in that order).
There are definitely worse ways to spend a Sunday.

Nice pics, but do my eyes deceive me or are the tees natural at North Bonneville? The shelter looks great but I don't think that the course would work too well for Team Disc Golf in the winter with natural tees. Is there a plan to put down cement this year or next? Thanks! :pirate:

We're working to get concrete pads in North Bonn but don't have a time frame yet.
We're thinking about starting a weekly doubles series on Sundays with a $4 buy-in to help raise funds. $2 would go into the pot, $1 to concrete fund & $1 to a rollover ace pot.
Everyone is welcome to check our site, www.nbdga.org , if interested.

Why not throw a tourney that half of the entry goes towards tee pads if you were able to get 60 for your last tourney I believe you could do that or even better if the weekend was planned for no other tourneys being played. I know that I wouldn't mind dropping 20 on a great cause.

We're working on holding a second tourney, but in the near term we're going to start our doubles this Sunday at 6pm. We're going to go with a $3 buy-in (rather than $4) with $1 going into the pot, $1 into the ace pot, which will carry over, and $1 into our tee pad fund.
We welcome everybody & anybody to come out this Sunday & help us get our doubles started off right.
We're also thinking about putting together a mixed-doubles on a fairly regular basis & would like to hear feedback from the disc golfing community. We're not sure if it would be best to require mixed couples to come out together & then shuffle them with a draw or allow singles too & try to figure out what to do with any leftovers when the mixing is done. Ideas?

Random draw doubles. If there is an odd man (or woman) out, they play Cali where they get one extra shot per hole.

Good suggestion, Sam, although we were thinking more along the lines of requiring one of the guys in the pairs without a gal to wear a dress while playing. We can pick up some stunning prom dresses at the local thrift store & really perk things up on the course. :)
It might also encourage more guys to bring a gal along.
