View Full Version : Government Rock, Cascade Locks?

Today I walked around the old quarry east of Cascade Locks known as "Government Rock." It's a very fun-to-explore little 30-acre peninsula at the end of Wyeth Road (map (http://www.oregondiscgolf.com/oregon_map.html?center=45.68920,-121.84510&zoom=15)) that would be an absolutely amazing site for a disc golf course. It's full of basalt cliffs, flat rocky meadows and old roads, and alder and cottonwood trees. Not to mention wind and water all around.

Right now it's being used mostly for shore fishing, which of course is completely compatible with disc golf. But, this rock is exactly where the Warm Springs Tribe wanted to build their casino -- which would not be so compatible with disc golf. BUT, now it turns out that they would NOT, in fact, site it on Goverment Rock. But I think the Tribe still owns it for now, casino or not.

How do you figure? Cascade Locks is on a major freeway, and it's a 50-minute drive from downtown Portland -- the same as McIver!

50 mins from portland maybe? but much more than that for those of us out here on the westside.

The other part of Flash's post about a "pay to play" course is a good idea to me. The Warm Springs tribe didnt get the casino they wanted on the land, which could have gotten them tons of money, so if a course did somehow get put in here, pay to play to get the tribe some money is a great idea. This coming from a part Native American!!
