View Full Version : Nicest course in OR?

Question to those who have played most of the courses in Oregon.... Which is the 'Nicest' Course as far as scenery/baskets/tee's go? Not so much interested in what is the hardest, most challenging or anything along those lines. From the reviews I found that Whistler in Roseburg looks to be really nice, suggestions?

Consensus generally seems to be Whistler's Bend, but you will get several other courses with multiple proponents.

great answer right there... Whistlers is my home course, and i too would agree that Milo has the best "GOLF" out there.

ASIDE from my opinion on this... we are in the process of getting several projects approved by the county and hope to making some much needed upgrades to Whistlers Bend in the near future. :)

I vote for Whistler's Bend, no question. McIver's scenery doesn't come close.

Hagg Lake has beautiful scenery, but the course itself is anything but "nice."

cool thanks for the input. We're headed to Whistlers Bend this weekend. I Plan on hitting up a course in corvallis and Eugene on the way or way back too.

Just a heads up - there is a rather large doubles tourney going on at Whistler's this weekend. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday...

But also full of goose poop and 3-inch-deep mud.

Also, is it skeeter season yet? I remember we went to play there around this time last year, and cut our round short they were so intense. It IS a sweet course though, when conditions cooperate, and not too far from one of the best courses in WA. ;)

Trojan was really great last weekend. It has dried out really well (we did skip 9-12, not enough time) and the skeeters were not bad. The only time I got bit was when we were searching in the bushes, I did not see any out on the fairways.

There is also not much that can compare to the Lucky Mud for beauty, it is under an hour away from Trojan.

Doesn't Benson look right at Multnomah falls? That's the best scenery, and by far the worst course! Rooster rock has naked people with in walking distance. Depending who's out, there might be some great scenery.

It's just west of M. Falls. I don't think you can see them, but there is another falls that you can see. Very beautiful.

Not the worst course. It all depends on what you're looking for. If you want a Milo experience then yeah, you'll be disappointed. If you are taking a new player with you, want a quick stop off the freeway (takes 10-15 minutes to play 9), or want to work on your approach game with your putter then it is a good course.

Don't hate something for what it is not; love it for what it is!

That isn't hating. Benson is one of the worst courses around if you are at all serious about playing disc golf. There is not much to love about that course.

so you think that brown hills with oak tree's with a sprinkling of pines covered with a ton of poison oak is a better looking place??

I think this is like Ford vs. Chevy, Roc vs. Buzzz, etc... there's no right answer. I'll always prefer mountainous scenery over flat woods, even if those mountains are brown.

(And yes, that WB picture is from mid-March.)

Hmm, sounds like this could use an outsider's perspective. I think a road trip is in order at some point. So Milo and Whistler's are obviously "must plays". What other courses, preferably near I-5 would you say are "must plays?" I have a few in mind, but I'd like to hear what the OR perspectives are.

Adair & Dexter. And Tadmor, if it's open.

And if you're in Estacada anyway (because of McIver), be sure to visit Timber.

Not responding to you specifically Sarah, but in the interest of good information....The disc golf scene rumor mill is swift and wildly inaccurate! At the BSF I had a guy in my group tell me that Oakway got pulled because some disc golfers "attacked some ball golfers"!!!:bricks:

Dexter baskets will be temporarily removed this Thursday, followed by three work parties, followed by hopefully the baskets going back in. See threads here:

Northern Oregon near I-5 would be Pier. Estacada is like 45-60 minutes from I-5, but less from I-205.
In the Valley, salem has 3 courses, soon to be 5, but the existing 3 are pretty good for the valley but nothing awesome for the traveler.
Albany-Corvallis have Adair, Willamette, Bryant, Waterloo, and Tadmor
Eugene has dexter but that's being pulled for a short time I hope.
Roseburg got Whistler's, which is way closer to I-5 than Milo is heh.
Grants Pass got Tom Pearce and Lake Selmac....

And comparing whistler's to Milo is comparing apples and oranges. Play both, love both, advertise both to the world, love one no less than the other.

As far as the Japan open goes, there are plenty out there for pictures and video, beautiful place but throwing less than 152g plastic in windy conditions would frustrate the heck out of me... hmmm maybe i should go in 2010? if they let me in...

Thanks for the recommendations. I'm pretty busy for the next couple months so a road trip wouldn't be happening for a little while. Willamette and Adair were on my list, and I was curious about Bryant, Waterloo, and Tadmor. Don't know much about them other than I know Tadmor is at a church camp and the other two apparently are rough around the edges. Would any rate higher than Willamette or Adair?

And Snap, or anyone else I guess, have you been to the Mt. Shasta course? The 4 9's layout sounds intriguing (it's what I've envisioned for my "won the lottery" dream course.)

I am not a spokesman at all for the EDGC. It is in another post that the course has been pulled indefinitely. The baskets werent stolen. If they were pulled out, its because of the course being pulled, and the work parties coming up that will make it even better :)

No. Willamette and Adair are the cream of the mid-valley crop (between the Portland area and Eugene). I would not recommend a special trip to the others if you have limited time. Especially if you haven't played Willamette or Adair. Cascades in Salem is worth a stop just based on its proximity to the I-5 exit; the park actually abuts the freeway.

Adam is the only person I know that has even visited the Mt. Shasta course, it is on my list of things to do for this summer and y'all know i'm gonna video tape it for ya... As for the valley, Adair is the farthest drive other than Tadmor from I-5 but Adair is the best of the selection in the Valley. I am hoping that the Jerry Miller Course @ Camp Taloali will become a factor once it gets opened and upgraded through time. The temp lay out for the 2nd course will be awesome, just wish the board would have let us build the first course there instead, but i can cry forever until they let us build a perm 2nd course if they like the temp lay out for the trial run in May... Tadmor is probably not usable during the summer months, same for Camp Taloali. It is a clean tough technical course for sure, but summer time, both courses off limits. And i must add now, the board wants Camp Taloali course to be pay to play since they are needing more money to help improve the camp grounds for the kids more than ever... With the help of one of the members on this forum, we will have a nice drop box made for us, once i get that, i'll announce a big thanks, and y'all can kiss him, till then, zipp shhh...

Ok back to what Tim was asking, yes make Adair your top priority for the valley area, Bryant is awesome if the woods are cleaned up, and for the Salem area, cascades is alright, with the added changes that the club is doing over the next few months, it should be even better, and it being less than 5 minutes off the freeway *if you could drive straight off the freeway, you prob land right into the park instead of driving around front*. Woodmansee in south salem is a tough technical 9 holer last time I played there, and it's family friendly, leave the wife and kids at the playground, play holes 1-6, drop in say hi to the wife and kids, show the family the rabbits that crawl all over hole 7 fairway, then play 8-9 and back to the parking lot.

Don't know much about them other than I know Tadmor is at a church camp...
I personally think Tadmor is the most fun course in the entire Albany/Corvallis/Lebanon area, but that's because I love playing in the woods. I suppose it depends on what you look for in a disc golf course. Their regular summer sessions go from June 28 to August 21 this year; you absolutely will NOT be able to play during those times. After 8/21, you'd still need to call ahead and see if they've got anything else going on.

And Snap, or anyone else I guess, have you been to the Mt. Shasta course? The 4 9's layout sounds intriguing (it's what I've envisioned for my "won the lottery" dream course.)
I've been there but haven't played it. It's mostly flat, with lots of trees but genuine fairways for the most part. I took some photos in the rain and the snow and posted them on DGCR: http://www.dgcoursereview.com/gallery.php?id=3221&mode=gal
