Dave Pittman
May 31st, 2009, 10:22 PM
The Disc Golf Club of Albany and Calapooia Brewing will again be hosting the Calapooia Classic August 8-9th at Bryant and Waterloo Parks. All divisions will play 4 rounds, 2 at one course Saturday and 2 at the other course Sunday. Awards will follow at Calapooia Brewing in Albany. Primitive group camping (no showers) will be available at Bryant Park.

We are set up for online and mail in registration. Online will open at 12:01 am tonight at PDGA (http://www.pdgasignup.com). You can also find a link to the registration form and mail it in to a secure mail box if you choose.

All advanced divisions are in one pool with all Pros and Intermediates in the other. This is the same split that was used at the Great Northwest Open. If any changes are made to pool assignments those affected will be given sufficient notice.

Thanks
David

Awesome! Just played both courses yesterday and I'm looking forward to it. Which day for which course for the two pools?

Does anyone know if you can just pay for camping when you get there, or do you have to do it when you sign up. We have not decided yet if we are camping.

Went to Bryant and Waterloo yesterday. The courses are very overgrown. Obviously the open areas of Bryant are beautiful and long, but the wooded holes are way over grown and expect to spend lots of time looking for discs. then we went to Waterloo and it was slightly better, only there are very little open holes, and I decided to wear shorts which meant alot of disc searching while getting stinging nettles all over my legs. Suprisingly no one lost a disc, and we ran into a park ranger who told us that there was going to be a lot of work done before the tourney and that they were getting some kind of attachement to tow around in the woods to knock it all down. Looking forward to the tourney and in no way is this meant to be an attack at anyone just a heads up as to what to expect.

Quite a bit of work has been done in the past week at both courses. Look for course conditions to keep getting better as work will be ongoing right up to the tournament.

The current registration list at pdga.com is controlled by the TD and is independent of you signing up at pdgasignup.com

If you were able to sign up on line, does that not mean there is still room in the tournament?

I would say in theory yes, however with two pools and the registration limit set at total of players in both pools; one pool can fill before the registration limit is met.

We are approaching that scenario here...
11 spots left in the Pro/Int pool
21 spots left in the Advanced pool

If you're planning on playing in the tournament and are not registered you know what you should do, right.

So it looks like we just need a few more people to make up a few divisions.

We need 2 more to sign up for masters and intermediate women to make them official.
We're also need 3 more Open women.

So if you know of someone who plays in these divisions that's not signed up yet, poke them with a stick!!

To the TD,

I signed up for this tourney a while ago and now I won't be able to make it. Is there a chance that you could release my spot to someone who can and would like to play (and then hopefully I could get my entry refunded) Unfortunately (as this is one of my favourite tourneys) I would love to be there but just can't. Please pm me (or just post here) to let me know if this is a possibility. I do have a friend who is interested in taking my spot and I could have him just pay me if it's possible to just change the names as opposed to going through the rigmarole of reimbursing, but I feel it is fairest to first offer ot to someone on the waitlist (if in fact there is one!)

Full refund is in the mail.

The Pro/Intermediate pool is now closed to online registration. I'll post the waiting list as we get people on it. To get on the waiting list you need to mail in a registration form and a check or sign up in person with Scott or myself.

There is still room in the Advanced pool and regtistration is still open online.

Went out to Bryant and Waterloo today, and the local clubs and parks and rec need to be commended! These course have come along way in the last couple of months! They are playing very nice with wide open fairways, still some stinging nettles out at Waterloo, but it serves me right for wearing shorts all the time. Cant wait for the classic, and I was informed that the monthly is being moved up a week to August 1st this month because of the classic, sothat spounds like a good time to get dow nthere for some more practice. Thanks again for all the hardwork!

Thanks for the kind words Carl.
The small but dedicated Albany club continues to work at getting the courses in tournament shape. We've also had a bunch of help from Greg (Waterloo park ranger) and his small crew working on the Waterloo course. If we're lucky Kirk might drive the big tractor in for some touch up when he gets back from World's, but honestly I think we'll be OK even if he can't. :D
Still big parts of both these courses are only one year old (or less) and they don't get the heavy use that Adair or Willamette do. There are rough spots in a few fairways, maybe no fairway where you think one should be, the rough is more punishing than rough on seasoned courses and natural tee areas that are not always flat and sometimes aggravating. Most players know this and are looking forward to the challenge.
Waterloo is already in much better shape than a year ago with Bryant in similar shape but working toward better. Also consider that two open holes at Bryant have been replaced by two tough wooded holes.

Albany Monthly will indeed be Saturday August 1st at Bryant.

I understand these are city or county parks and do not have general maintenance that a state park would, but has there been any additional efforts to remove poison oak?

At the Willamette Qualifier we played Adair and it was riddled with poison oak in the forest holes and, although some of the plants were in their infancy (and some were not) I did get some on my legs.

I am just curious so I can dress appropriately to avoid any itchy and scratchy.

Bryant is an Albany City park and the woods holes are basically 100% maintained by the efforts of the Disc Golf Club of Albany. We have gotten a helping hand once or twice from the Linn County Sheriff's Work Crew.
I am not aware of any poison oak at Bryant (too wet) however there are blackberries, wild roses and other pesky flora to scratch you up.

Waterloo is a Linn County Park and the course is maintained by the Waterloo Park staff. However the course is the lowest priority at the park and fairway mowing does lag behind where golfers would like it to be in the spring. They have mowed the course where the tractor can get to and overall the course is in good shape. A few of us have spent several hours working to improve conditions (OK'd by the Park Ranger). Stinging nettles are the main concern with blackberries and thistles rather persistent. Any poison oak there would be very scattered and hard to stumble into.

I am just curious so I can dress appropriately to avoid any itchy and scratchy.

The best advice would be to wear long pants or long socks for your morning rounds and bring shorts to wear in the afternoon if you want after getting a feel for the course conditions.

Amateur winners will get DGCA/WDGC scrip...
It will be good on inventory of the Disc Golf Club of Albany & Inventory of the Willamette Disc Golf Club. It can be redeemed Sunday after the event, at the Eugene Celebration or at the Willamette Open.

It will also be good on Calapooia Brewery schwag on Sunday after the event!

The scrip will also be honored at other major events hosted by either club.

The WDGC takes pride in having a good selection of discs in stock which includes Innova and Discraft. The DGCA will have in the range of 75 extra tournament stamp discs as well as their current inventory.

Bryant is pretty well marked and each basket has some orange and black tape on the rim of the basket that points you in the correct direction of the next tee pad, also look for orangish pink ribbon or flags that help to mark the correct path.
Waterloo is not marked as well, but there are very short walk outs and you should be able to find your way around pretty well, also wear long socks or pants as there is stinging nettles if you get off the fairway, or in some cases on the fairway. Have fun

I'm not sure about Bryant but I played Waterloo for the first time on Sunday and found a map to be super helpful. There are so many little trails around many of the baskets that it is hard to tell where to go next.

Here is the map for Waterloo (http://www.oregondiscgolf.com/course_maps/Waterloo.jpg)

I've never played Waterloo before, but this map makes it pretty clear that it's a wooded course. Could anyone make any comparisons between Pier and Waterloo? Is it more dense than Pier? From the look of the distances on the score card, it's not nearly as long. Perhaps I should start practicing my buzzz and teebird shots now!

Waterloo has very defined fairways, but they are narrow. You will want to stay on them! Let me say that again: You will want to stay on the fairway. At Pier, if you wander off the fairway you may still have a pretty good look at the basket. That is not the case at Waterloo. In most cases, it may take you a shot or two to get back onto the fairway (if you find your disc). Play safe with the buzz and teebird and you'll do just fine.

Is there a schedule for the day posted somewhere yet. Looked through the tread, and did not see one.

Cindy :)

The schedule was set long ago and has not changed... :chinscratch:

It can be found on the tournament flyer for which there is a link a few posts back.

A spot has opened in the B Pool (Pro/Intermediate) and there is no one on the wait list yet...

Lunch is not provided and the rounds at Bryant will be at least 3 1/2 hours so plan accordingly. We will have a longer lunch break on Saturday so there will be plenty of time to support our sponsors and the community and go out to eat lunch.
The lunch break will be shorter on Sunday and though there will be enough time to go get lunch you will probably want to get it to go.

The Women's Advanced Masters division is playing in the A pool (Advanced)

There are BBQ pits but none that are close and convenient to our camping area. I suggest bringing yours.

Weekly Doubles were held tonight at Waterloo and 20 showed up. Brad McDougall and Chris Cusack the winners at -13, tie for second Justin Skinnell Add Crawdad tied with Mike Storrs & ? with -11. This round was played in a little bit of rain... If I got the teams wrong well sorry but you get the idea, that there was some good shooting tonight.

Hey Dave - is there still room in this event? I am thinking about a last-minute change of plans and would like to know. Thanks.

AND IF I CAN GET IN:
If anyone from Portland is planning on driving down both days and would like someone to chip in for some gas, please PM me.

We've got a spot for you Sam, the MA1 field is huge.

Headed out to Waterloo in a few minutes, so this is my last post/reply today. I'll see everyone this weekend.

Sorry about that Sarah.

You will need to check in at Bryant Park and youi can pay Scott. All Advanced divisions will play Bryant twice on Saturday.

I tried to leave but I've been on the phone...

Anyone with old Oregon Series scrip bring it with you this weekend or give it to someone coming down. The logistics of getting the trailer down here are being worked out. :chug:

Dave- Just a heads up, I forgot to tell you yesterday but there is a nasty bee's nest on hole 13 at Waterloo, the near side of the large log going across the fairway near the basket, on the left. It is in the ground and those bastards are vicious.

I also saw one at Bryant on hole 13. It's across the path on the the left of the fairway about 2/3 up to the basket. above ground about the size of a cantaloupe.

I almost walked right into it when I was searching for my clear teebird my friend lost. By the way, I'm an idiot for letting my friend throw a clear colored disc on that hole. I'm still hoping to get that baby back this weekend.

Thanks for the heads up. Waterloo Parks staff nuked it before I got to the park. The wasps & yellow jackets have really started to get active. I'm ready to go after the next new one and I've got the Parks staff to help if necessary. It is one of their top priorities when a new nest is located on park grounds.

The Advanced pool filled today with a couple more MA2's moving on up. The courses look good, perfect weather (thank goodness), it must be GO time.

I was spotting at the Calapooia Classic today and was stung early by a yellow jacket. Having had bad reactions from this before I left and went straight to immediate care.

Anyone who has been there knows that they usually just want to treat you and get out the door but, this time was different. I had a Dr. who discussed bee stings, reactions, medications, prevention, etc. We must have talked for about 15-20 minutes. The most important thing I got out of it is that because of my reaction to the sting, I will likely never die from being stung by a yellow jacket.

One of the things he said is bees and yellow jackets are attracted to bright clothing and perfumes , cologne, etc. So the advice was don't look like or smell like a flower or anything sweet. That's good advice on the golf courses this time of year.

Anyway, after taking a bunch of Benadryl at the park and the drugs he gave me, I spent the last 6 hrs. asleep. What a waste of a Saturday. The good news is, my arm isn't the size of a baseball bat (yet).

I hope your arm feels better soon, thanks for spotting you guys rock. Except for the two teenage girls on 12 I think it was. They just sat in the middle of the fairway yucking it up while our group and the group behind us looked for lost discs that they did not spot for us.

I did not have to worry about the yellow jackets because I diffinatly did not smell like purfume PHEW :).

Had a great time this weekend only wish I could have played a little better. Those two courses are tough. Probally the toughest 4 rounds of golf I have played to date, and my legs have all the battle scares to prove it.

Thanks to everyone who was involed with putting this event on. Also thanks to Toby for giving me a ride to Waterloo on Sunday when my ride had to drop out. Nice meeting Kyle too who was riding with Toby. Also had a fun meeting and playing with Rob 1st round at Waterloo, and Dave 2nd round at Waterloo. Fun times.

Nate Sexton breaks Colin Sexton's course PDGA records at Waterloo. He was one shot off Ben Van Dusen's course record 43.
Nate ties Dave Feldberg's course record at Bryant and sets the PDGA course scoring record record for the permanent layout. Though last year's one round at Bryant for MPO had 2 temp holes I think his 1045 rated round should still stand as the PDGA round ranking record. :trophy:

Question here: I had to gracefully bow out during the 4th round. Do the rest of my rounds count towards my rating? Also, how come I don't have my score for the 3rd round? It was, sadly, my best round of the tourney.

Just to reiterate, you guys did an AWESOME job. All of us Wortman folk commend you on a very well ran tournament. Thank you, all!

Thanks for the praise Chris, you also help out a lot as well, always working to keep courses clean and in good shape at work parties.

But I think the true stewards are the Albany club members who took the event this year and made it happen. The Albany club may not be one of the larger clubs in the State but they have a lot of friends and know how to show golfers a good time.

I think the douchebag in question could learn a lot from a 4 year old.

I'll add my kudos and thanks to the Albany Club, Dave, Scott, Jeromie, etc...for the great tournament! Thanks to Laura and Mark for the sponsorship and players party. I like Bryant and Waterloo and I greatly admire the huge amount of work a very few individuals have volunteered with few resources to get these courses in the ground for us to play. People like to complain about the rough at Waterloo or the obstacles at Bryant, and that's somewhat valid, but these courses are what they are and we all know that. They're getting better every year and I love playing them.

Thanks Matt and everyone else for the kind words. The transformation of these courses has been pretty amazing and they will continue to get better & better.
I talked in length with Greg the Park Ranger at Waterloo Monday about the tournament and the course. Now not specifically about tee pads but I will get an update on that when I see him next. Look for continued improvements to the course; more stairs, some benches and a few picnic tables, etc. They are proud of the course and want to see it continue to evolve like we all do. They do have money earmarked for the disc golf course. Yeah!

Cheers :chug:
