I will be signing up in the morning! Whooo! Got to do some thinking on which division I want to do..
The thing is - I don't quite feel like I'm advance enough, but I do play in the master's division -- kinda like just a step below advance.. I still need to work on some of my skills..
Anyway -- I'm just rambling on..

I was looking for a place to introduce myself somewhere in the forum but since I could not find one I decided that it would be here.
My name is Amy and I am Zippyboy's wife, he was so thrilled when he saw this event and especially when he learned that I went looking for more information. I think that I may play in this event, it looks really great and we had a great time camping at Hornings last year.
I do have a potential conflict for the Sunday rounds but I am hoping to get that figured out or at least join everyone for Friday night and Saturday.

Thanks Cindy. Zippyboy said that he was thinking about getting a girlfriend to go to the chick flick if I did not want too. He is really excited to go.
I have gone to a few events, World Biggest two years ago and Oregon State Doubles and Trojan bag tag. I have also been at a Fern Burner but did not play. I am not very good but for this event I will end up playing intermedate since I have been playing two years and I can beat my 8 year old most of the time.

When we were there last year we could not have a fire, is there some places that you can?

most places at Hornings do allow fires, as long as it is in an above ground fire pit. If you dont have your own, you can usually get Bob or Rick to bring you one to your site area.

NOT TRUE! It depends on the time of year. Sometime after (or in) June, fire season starts and all fires are prohibited. Please ask before you start any fire, even in an above ground fire pit. Based on my previous discussions with Bob, fires are never allowed in August.

That makes sense.. August is usually one of the hotter months. Things are usually dried out - so don't ask about the fire.. It was nice over the past weekend, but it is not something I would recommend in the middle of summer to the beginning of winter - I keep thinking about all the horror stories about fires in the canyon.. I don't want that to happen at Horning's Hideout!

Rest assured guys the Chick Flick planning committee will have all these details worked out before the event. We are in close contact with Bob Horning, and before the event it will be know whether or not fires will be allowed.

Hi everyone, a bit of confusion on fires. We are allowed by the Forest Service :cop: to have fires here during the Non-fire hazard season (about October thru to about the end of June), but during July, August and September we are not allowed to have fires here at all! Even if the Forest Sevice was not involved, we wouldn't allow fires just because we like our place green :) instead of charcoal black:(.
Many folks have questioned me on why then does the State Parks allow fires most of the season (unles it's extreme fire danger), and I posed that question to the State fire Marshal. The answer is quite simple he said, if the state burns down their own park no one would sue them for it. Personally, I would rather see the state parks stay green too :).
Later, Bob

Yes, I am so excited to get my girl Erika involved in the Chick Flick again. She attended the big one last year at Timber and had a blast. In fact Erika also recruited her friend Katie to also sign up for the chick flick as well. If anyone was at the BSF Katie was giving the massages on Saturday next to the Stumptown tent. Now in case any of you ladies get super pumped and golf all day, you will have two licensed massage therapists at your disposal if you are sore. They will sign up on Wed. next week. Woot woot.

CPink,
This sounds like a great time and I've got my wife planning on signing up. I have a few questions...
1) Does mixed casual round mean Saturday is a casual day after the clinic and both tournament rounds are played back to back on Sunday?
2) Do all divisions play both courses once?
3) Why no mixed doubles with caddies???

I may be wrong, but I am assuming Darr meant mix dubs with the chick player, playing with her caddie for the event???

:chinscratch::chinscratch:
1) This is a mix group of ladies at different playing levels.
2) We're still working on that one.
3) This is the Chick Flick, if ladies would like to play with the caddies they can Saturday night. Otherwise, the three rounds will be ladies only during the scheduled events of the Chick Flick.
Thanks for your support, Darr! We're super excited for a fun weekend! :trophy:

He might quite possibly win:nahnah: It will be up to you ladies to decide that. The caddies will not be deciding this one.
As for Caddie nicknames, I would encourage such behavior. Not sure if it's normal or not. I try to avoid normal behavior whenever possible (which seems to be daily.)

I've got, perhaps a silly question. My husband has started really getting into disc golf, and wants me to try. He thought the chick flick might be a good opportunity. However, I don't want to totally embarass myself. I can't throw a frisbee worth anything, and I'm even worse at disc golf. I tried a couple holes over at Greenway, and the best I could do, even on the short holes, was 8 shots. The others were around 10, and that didn't even count the ones where my finger got stuck on the rim trying to remember everything else my husband was telling me. So, how good are the people who come? Do you have a class for people who are starting from ground zero?
Thanks.

Not a silly question at all. One of the Chick Flick's main goals is to introduce new women to disc golf in a relaxed setting. Last year our recreational division was the biggest division of the event, and there were several women taking part who were brand new. Our clinic's will be saparated by division with the recreational group starting with the basics. Come on out you guys will have a blast.

It is going to be a wonderful event.. I am looking forward to it also - sometimes I think I OVER-ESTIMATED my abilities - so - I won't really quite put myself in the advance position, but I would place myself in the Masters - Amateur! Considering that I have recently picked up disc golf last October - so --- Please do help me and I'm open to suggestions -- I know - firm grip, between 10 and 12.. now what else?
This is going to be a great opportunity for all of us - regardless of what kind of questions we will have...

Perhaps my problem is expectations. I played my first full round of 9 holes at Greenway yesterday, and couldn't beat triple par. I can't say I'm at all happy with that score, but I guess I don't have a lot to compare it to. I also question whether I'll even be able to play 36 holes on Sunday, given that I'd expect that to be at least 500 throws. I'd think my back and shoulder would get pretty sore at that. I guess I'm getting at least a little better -- I only got my finger stuck once in nine holes, and my husband let me do it over.
It's not that I'm expecting to shoot even close to par (my husband isn't even shooting par yet), but I guess I'm a little disappointed that I can't even make triple par on an easy course like Greenway. I'm a little afraid that Horning's will be beyond me, and especially for 36 holes. I also feel bad about holding people up, when it takes me a dozen throws or more on a hole.

ptld2001 - Welcome to Disc Golfing! You'll love it!
The goal is to learn -- that's why we have the clinic on Saturday to help you out. You might be surprised about how well you do with other gals on the Highland Course.. I would recommend you come out and try it. For me, I am still learning - even though I've picked it up again in October, I don't feel as perfect either. (I was way over par during the last weekend at Lakewood Open, so I won't worry to much about it.. Just be glad it isn't a PDGA event!)

ptld2001, I remember those days. It is hard, I had an especially hard time since I use to compete with school in regular golf and the first two courses I played were Trojan and The Lucky Mud, talk about trial by fire (or water or trees, which ever you prefer).
This sounds like a great event for you with the clinics first and then the playing the next day. It is amazing how quickly you can get better with a little bit of instruction and practice. I have played for the past three weekends and I can see the difference just in that little time. Sign up and keep enjoying this nice weather on the disc golf course you will already be playing much better by the beginning of August.

I just looked at the sign up, and it said there were 78 slots left. So, I'm guessing you're looking at about 100 women total, and there's space for 78 more? I wanted to be sure I was understanding this correctly. I'm still tending to be interested, but I wanted to wait before I signed up, hoping I'll get better. I would be embarassed to go, given how bad I am now, but I'm hoping to maybe work myself up to double par for an easy course. Then I wouldn't feel like I was holding everyone else back. I think it's possible, but won't happen over night. I wanted to be sure to know when the decision point is.

ptld2001 - Don't worry about it. I just talked to some ladies this week that may come. One has only thrown 8 times (and our groups were next to each other two of those times) and uses only one disc, she sounded really excited to learn and play with other people.

Oh, I'd be absolutely THRIILLED with +29. I'm more concerned that I'll be at more like +112. That's why I'm hoping to be able to work up (down?) to a
+60, and then I'd feel qualified that I'm not holding everyone else up TOO bad.

Hey no worries. Last year we had several women who had never played before, so you have a leg up on those women for sure. Also if you still do not feel ready for the tournament rounds on Sunday then just come out for the clinics on Saturday. For $25 it is well worth it even if you decide not to play on Sunday. The players pack alone will be worth well over $25 in merch.
I bet though after Saturday you will be chomping at the bit to play in the tournament on Sunday. :yay:

Well, I'm getting there. I saw the online video on the x-step on Friday, and went out to Greenway on Saturday to try it. My husband played in the tournament (his first one!), and I tried a couple holes to see if it helped. I think I'm up to 40-50 ft throws! I was able to throw a 10 on the 5th hole, rather than a 12. Hey, it's not a huge improvement, but if I can shave a stroke off that hole each week, then I'd be at double par by the beginning of August.
They tried to talk me into playing the tournament (it turns out there were only two adult women), but I don't think they'd have been happy with my 10s. Especially given that it was shotgun format, and so I'd have slowed up the entire tournament. My husband said that the DG community is very forgiving, and it wouldn't have been a problem, but I'd hate feeling like everyone was always waiting on me. Maybe next time. I'll try and play an entire round this week, and maybe I'll be able to get under 70.

I can not wait for the clinics on Saturday. After this weekend at the Bad Monkey I know that I need lots of improvement but I am unsure how to do it. I am also really short on distance and confidence. Hopefully Saturday will help with that.

I guess, perhaps you can improve pretty quickly at the beginning. My husband and I got out to Orchards yesterday (was it ever crowded!), and I was able to shoot a 61! Admittedly, this is an easier course with shorter drives, but I was getting almost 50 ft drives, which is a great improvement. It now looks reasonable to be able to get down to double par in the next month, and be able to get down to maybe +50-60 at Horning. That's a huge difference from +120. The next thing to work on is consistency. One pretty cool thing, is that I actually saw one of my drives do an s-curve! My husband said he'd seen another start to do one, but this one was pretty obvious. It's pretty neat when you see things work the way they're supposed to.

Yeah, we've been wanting to get up to Vancouver some time and play Leverich, Glenwood, and WSU. My husband's on a "try new courses" kick, and so he did Rockwood and Vance a few weeks ago. I'd wanted to try Portland Adventist, but there was no one on the course, and my husband wasn't sure it was open. I suspect this weekend, we'll either do Vancouver, Salem (Woodmansee, Cascade, and Corban), or Horning. With the nice weather, there's also a chance we'll do Ewing Young, Herbert Hoover, and Wortman. Herbert Hoover is one of my husband's favorites, and it's nice, since it's pretty compact. The holes are fairly short, but there's a lot of interesting terrain. Wortman has a lot of trees, but that's a situation where a short drive can come in handy!

Yup. I've been following my husband around for the last few months, and I usually arrange the logistics, so I knew a pretty good amount about dg, even before I tried it. I'm also his memory, so when people mention things like courses, I remind him about which one it is. So, I talk like much more of an expert than I am!
I just looked up the Lucky Mud, since I'd never heard of it before. It sounds like a pretty nice course, but more challenging than many.

I've got a question on technique, that might help my driving. When you do the back step on the X-step, where are you looking? I try and keep my eye on where I'm aiming, and my husband said that that limits my wind-up, and limits my drive distance. So, do you keep facing the target, or do you let your head naturally follow along with the rest of the motion?
We went to Greenway yesterday, and there was a pretty vicious wind. That wind really affects the light discs. I could hardly drive anywhere when I was shooting into the wind. Greenway's definitely more difficult than Orchards, especially if you have a weak drive. However, I did get one drive that looked to be at least 70 feet, although at least a third was rolling on the ground (but in the right direction!). I managed to get down to 66 for 8 holes (they've removed the 9th temporarily, and I'm expecting I'd have shot a 72-73 with the extra hole) At this point, I think what I need is to just go out on an open field with all my husband's discs, stand in a set position, and practice throwing at least 10 times each to get a consistent motion. Practicing on the course is more fun, and good once you get better, but is probably not the best thing for a beginner. So, hopefully I can get this done before early August.

Well, I think I'm finally at least somewhat getting the fundamentals of technique. I'm up to a fairly consistent 50-60ft drive. It's certainly nothing to brag about, but is an improvement from 30. We went out to Leveritch on the first, and it was so deserted, we were able to just practice. I tried all my husband's discs, and I'm very consistent, at least as far as distance. I still need to work on timing, which affects direction. We couldn't figure out Leveritch, so we'll have to go back another time with a map. At least we know where it is now.
I got the first disc of my own -- a 150gm Leopard. The people at Next Adventure said I should be able to get a little more distance than with the Dragon. We also got a couple more putters, and we'll figure out who likes which better. We went out to try them out at Pier Park, and am I sore! I'm not sure I'll be able to make 2 rounds of 18 at the Chick Flick for the tournament -- especially if they're anywhere near the level of Pier Park. I shot a 145 (what's that -- +91?). I checked the hole lengths, and given the length of my drive, that's right around what I'd expect.
BTW, we did get out to Herbert Hoover on Friday, and I shot my first double bogeys. One thing I didn't like about that course, was that hole 8 has you shooting over a wide patch of brambles, and there's pretty much no way to avoid it. My husband thought it was over 50 ft, and he didn't think I'd make it with my drive, so I had to skip that hole. Are there holes like that at Horning's?
Ms Thing
July 6th, 2009, 09:38 AM
Leverich was deserted? I have never seen it that way, it is normally crazy busy, like wait 3 groups to start busy. I wish you had been able to figure it out it is a pretty great course, not too long, not too short and really pretty.
I am glad to hear that you have your own disc, that should be a pretty good choice for you, dragons are hard to throw but very needed if you play near water.
I had a lesson on Friday and practiced on Sunday and I hurt, still. Repeatedly throwing for practice is much harder on the body then just playing a round. I had played 18 on Thursday and did not feel it at all.

It was absolutely amazing how deserted Leverich was. We were there around 5, and stayed for at least an hour. We only saw one group that whole time. We asked them about the course, and they said we'd have to print a map off the net, and that it's not obvious. We practiced down in that picnic area, over by the third tee. I was afraid the park would be absolutely packed, and we were very pleasantly surprised. There was even plenty of shade, without low trees (at least enough for my drive). We'd definitely go back to try it for real. I agree, that twelve holes is pretty nice. It also doesn't look like the holes are crazy long either, although it's difficult to say without a map. We did play the 12th hole, just so my husband could say he'd played part of the course!

The holes themselves are not too longer either, #3 and #10 I think are the longest. If someone had given you a basic idea you most likely would have found all the holes they are a little spread out but not too bad.

I checked out the map, and it looks like maybe a little harder than Greenway, although there are some short holes. Since it's that crowded, we'll probably plan to try it some evening. It looks like about an hour for the round, assuming there's not too much of a line! Looking at the map, I doubt we'd have found holes 8-10, much less many of the tees. I hadn't realized how much I appreciate concrete tee pads until we were there! We considered ourselves lucky to find any of the tees.

That is a good question. I was just planning on packing food for us. There is no place to go to, Hornings is 7 miles outside of North Plains which does not even have a grocery store (it does have a "market", bigger then a gas station mini mart but much smaller then a grocery store). We plan on staying two nights so I am packing all kinds of camping and cooking gear. I would be down for a potluck on Saturday if anyone else is interested.

I would recommend for you to play intermediate. 10 months is a good amount of time to get some of those throws down. PM me to chat if you would like!

Hey dude, can you describe the day for the guys on Saturday? Are we supposed to be helping out? Or will it be more Caddy Olympics? and is Sunday an all day tourney? 2 rounds? etc.. I know you already told me on Sunday, but the heat fried my memory. I think I remember that you said Bob was coming to the event in costume and wearing like a leopard print thong? Hmmm... how do I put this in a constructive way so that no one gets the idea that we are trying to take away from the awesome weekend planned for the ladies...
I know that there are several Flockers that do not want to help with the clinics (nothing personal - just not our thing) and want to go off and do our own thing on the day that is supposed to be casual. We would love to golf, of course, seeing as how that is what we like to do. It has been discussed that the course(s) would be both open and closed to those not taking part in the clinics meaning that those of us who do want to golf might have to get in our cars and drive to another course to do it. This has been discussed amongst those of us who do not want to take part in the clinics and we are fine with this if it has to go down that way. Hagg and Orchard and Grand Lodge are all within a reasonable drive. That said, we would prefer it if we could use the course that is not being used for the clinics so that those of us who want to enjoy the casual day that we are paying for do not have to drive to another course.
If that could be discussed and something could get worked out such that the guys who want to golf during the clinic can do so, there will be at least a handful of happy cocks in the flock. Again, we are not trying to take away from any of the awesomeness that is planned and would not encourage people to not attend the clinics in order to play with us - just that some of us want to get some golf on during the day rather than just at night.
Thanks to all of the women (and John) for making this weekend happen. For sure it will be one of the highlights of the year and the Gibsons are really looking forward to it.

As a note to those who would like to share the day with the ladies and not interfere with them on the courses, I was planning on flagging out much of the new course with tape and such, just so some folk could play some holes and get a feel of it. There will be no targets other than a stake in the ground, and tee pads will be maked by the same. Holes 6 and 8 are unplayable yet, need to thin trees but can't in hot weather. This will be an option for many, so that we can free up the other courses for the women. It's also my understanding that the short throw course won't be completely closed but instead the women will have priority on that. Is this everyone's understanding?
Thanks, Bob

I am very excited that there were so many women registered, and it sounds like there were many new players there as well. What a great way of growing the sport!

Although everything was fantastic about the weekend I'd have to say for me the highlight was seeing Mrs. Horning out there taking the clinics and playing in the casual round. She was decked out in her stylish golf apparell and the best part was the smile that adorned her beautiful face the entire time. This is a perfect example of what the Chick Flick is really all about.
Kudo's to the organizing committee, both for the Chicks and the Flock. The planning was super and the execution of the plan flawless. Well done!
Enough can't be said either for all of the good folks at Horning Hideout. There hospitality was incredible. Ricky through up a covered shelter for shade and boy did that help. Coffee in the shop early in the morning was a swwwweeeetttt touch. What ever we needed they were to there to assist.
Chick Flick 2010? What can we expect next? Can it get any better? I have a feeling the ladies will take it to a whole new level next year. I for one can't wait.

Nobody said anything about you playing, you would have been put to work :) . There were lots of ladies looking for caddies on Sunday, me included(Zippyboy was running my son to camp so that I could play).

Bob, that was beautiful! Seeing Jane out there participating with us was awesome and a definite highlight for me also!!
Goodness gracious... Eric jokingly told me Friday on the way out "By Monday morning, you'll be sick of fun." I didn't think that was possible, but I sure did give it a shot! :) It was so nice meeting everyone. Thanks to all the ladies and men that made this such a great weekend for everyone! Can't wait for next year!

I believe it was our awesome TDs idea to convince Ma Horning to join in on the fun. I think Carie just grabbed her, and got her set up with a players pack, and lunch. She played in the causal round, and Gwillim was her caddie. I talked to her on Sunday morning to see if she wanted to play in our newly formed grand masters division. She really wanted to, but had something else going on. She had a blast though, and wanted me to thank the ladies for such a wonderful time. She had never played the canyon course. When I said to her I heard you tore it up out there she replied quietly "yes I did". She also was a little smitten with Gwillim her awesome caddie. :kissflowers:
