I had a pair of Salomons shoes and last weekend the sole split down the side.
I have been shopping around and asking people what kind of shoes the like.
I have been thinking about a pair of Keens or a pair of Merrills. Anybody have any Ideas of where to buy a good pair of shoes at a good price.
I rather pay a little more than having my feet hurt.

I usually get golf shoes from steepandcheap.com. You have to be patient and vigilant for that to work out though. Usually backcountryoutlet.com and sierratradingpost.com have good deals on decent shoe selections. Helps to know your size in the different brands for shopping online.

I had a pair of La Sportiva approach shoes that served me well for about two years of heavy play, but they didn't have the best traction on all surfaces...
Now I have a pair of Merrells (If you look on the Merrell site, it's the 'Radius' ) that have superior traction in all circumstances. Dry, wet, mud, snow, ice, loose gravel...they're even waterproof. They've made it through fall, winter, and spring with very little wear. I'm impressed.
If I'm playing in sunny weather, I wear a pair of Vasque 'Flux' sandals that also rock.

If there's anyway you can wait a couple of months for Keen to come out with their disc golf shoe you'd be very happy. They had one on display this weekend and it should be a heck of a golf shoe. AND you will be supporting a strong supporter of disc golf.

i looked over the Keen disc golf shoe at the BSF and it really looked good! i was a bit amused at how none of the pros mentioned salomone shoes, instead they were thanking their sponser "KEEN"! i think that the new keen shoe is deffinately worth looking at, the only down side is that their shoes are always so expensive!

Big downside for me with the shoe is that it is a waterproof sock inside the outer shell. So while your feet stay dry from the outside, they get wet from the inside. The KEEN rep reminded me that the average foot produces up to 8 ounces of sweat a day, too much for me. Maybe as a winter shoe, but I have BOGS. I spoke to another guy who had the KEEN stlye like the golf shoe but mesh, he said after a few rounds they began to pull away at the stress points, so he no longer wears them for golf. My search goes on, I have yet to replace the 40 dollar shoes I bought 3 years ago and finally wore out, but NB no loger makes that style.

I like the Puma King soccer shoes. Wide footbed and designed to be abused. With the plastic socks unbeatable

I'd think the cleats on soccer shoes wouldn't work too well on concrete teepads.

I've used indoor soccer shoes for a couple of summers now. Super grippy on the pads and work pretty good in dry turf or dirt. Only a summer shoe - absolutely not to be worn when it's wet out.

I just recently scored a pair of Keen's at GI Joe's going out of business sale. They are awesome :yay: They were comfortable on my feet right out of the box, and they have the Keen dry which works great for keeping my feet dry. I scored a free pair of Keen's certificate at the BSF this weekend, so I think I will try to use it to get my husband Steve a pair too since without his support I would not have been able to play. :kissflowers:

They have a goretex lining so they are waterproof, fit like a pair of nike running shoes and have excelent grip on anything I have yet to encounter.
They will cost a pretty penny but I think they're worth it.

I played in my Wasatch Crests by Keen all weekend at the Fling in the heat. My feet were bone dry at night, even though they are a waterproof shoe. They breath very well, I was pleasantly surprised. All I know is that as long as Keen produces the disc golf shoe, I'll never buy another type. Light weight and great out of the box.

I love Adidas Sambas and burn through a pair every summer (then they become shop/garden shoes for the next summer.)
Other than those, I've heard great things about the Portland-based company Brooks that makes Cascadias.
I tried Nike trail runners (3 pairs) when I worked there a couple years ago. they were cute and fell apart quick enough to keep the sweatshops that Bob mentions above ticking (not saying the Adidas weren't made in the same factory, just saying that I get more than a month out of Adidas...can't say that for any of the 10 or so pairs I bought when I worked there...)
Recently I've resigned myself to the fact that, if I want dry feet and to play in the conditions I do (read: is it daylight? is it safe to get to a course...? let's GO!) I should wear big old waterproof catleman's boots with nice insoles or solid trailrunners that will get wet but assure a solid footing.
Wow, I get long winded when I'm icing down after a round...

OK guys!!! :cheerleader:
After breaking my ankle slipping down a slippery slope at hole #2 at Pier :waaah::explode:, I would highly recommend that everyone wear something that has good tread, supports the ankle really well, and that you don't slide around in the shoe. :wink2: That being said, a good pair of hiking boots with knarly tread is going to be the shoe for me from NOW ON! I've seen a lot of people wearing flip-flops, gators, and tennis shoes w/no tread (guilty). Just for the sake of something that only took a split second to happen - take care of your feet before you get on the course! :cop:

I just tried these out at REI in Eugene, they fit a little weird...they have 2 sets of lacing loops...one for wide feet and one for narrow feet (outer loops for narrow feet). Ended up fitting 1/2 as good as the Vasques I finally settled on.....

Shoes are a big deal, they gotta fit, feel and work right. The best Spring, Summer, fall shoe I found was the Adidas Barricade Grass shoe, but alas it is out of production. I now sport a pair of Adidas Samba Millenniums, sweet shoe. All leather but not too hot or heavy. Like bags every person has their own set of needs in a shoe, so my only advice is buy from a business that you can return them no questions asked if they aren't what you were hoping for. I had purchased a pair of New Balance 620s, nice shoe but after a month they began to tear, I shipped them back, no problem. Good luck.

Call me crazy but for summer disc golf play I just can't beat my nice pair of used Tevas I picked up at next adventure, I know they may not be the safest shoe out there, but they sure are fun:jumpspin: And I even managed to play the Lava launch down Mt. Bachelor in a trusty pair of tevas:wink2:

hehehehe ohh Adam.... the Puma King is a famous indoor soccer shoe line, although they do make cleats in the King, its well known for being the top indoor soccer shoe... anyways, small humorous thing...
As for me, I like to switch around between my Nike cross country/running shoes, columbia hiking shoes, and Merrell shoes which is my current fave. I noticed that using "shoe goo" where the shoe could break off has extended the shoe life dramatically.
All 3 were bought at the outlet malls... Nike at some random shoe outlet store, columbia at columbia in woodburn, and merrell at the merrell outlet store near here in cali... Outlet stores are good!

REI has a great return policy.
I bought a pair of Merrell Moab Gore-Tex XCR Cross-Training Shoes and they started leaking after 3 months. I figured they should have lasted longer.
Almost 6 months after I bought them, I went in and was looking for new shoes. I explained the situation to the shoe clerk, just asking how long the waterproofing should last. She said if I was still wearing them they should and told me to return them.
I went in the next day and returned them. They gave me almost full price credit (there is a dividend system they use, so since I already received my dividend for that shoe purchase, I had to subtract that from the original price).

What do people think of the Bite high top Disc golf shoe? Do they run big or small, narrow or wide. how well do tehy hold up?

Hands down, the top three brands to buy are Vasque, Merrell and La Sportiva. These days, I also try to look for Vibram soles, as they have superior traction and durability.
Probably the best shoes I've killed playing disc golf, were a pair of La Sportiva Cirque Pro approach shoes. Their Frixion rubber is the stickiest you can put on your feet and gives incredible grip on anything. Being an approach shoe, they also have a very firm, almost unbendable last running the full length of the sole. Climbing any trail was like having my own personal stairs. Still, they were really pricey and, although the soles were super sticky, they were also super soft and wore out quicker than I would have liked, so I'm sticking to Vasque and Merrell for now.

The Bite High tops are great but Bite is no longer a company. As far as size, they are fairly roomy. I bought an 11 and 10.5 (I usually wear an 11) when they were 2 for 1 and both worked very well. They hold up for a long time too. I played in my first pair for 1.5-2 years and I play a lot of golf. I wish they still made these.

I bought a new pair of Garmonts from REI about a month ago. They are very sturdy with Vibram soles, and a large toe-cap. I drag my right foot when I throw, and so far only a couple stitches in the leather have come un-done. I have gone through a pair of Salomons, and a pair of Merrells,
both returned to REI. All have been destroyed, and they still took them back on exchange. Of course i had to pay the difference, if the new shoes were more expensive, but totally worth it. I'm just gonna keep blowing shoes out until I find one that lasts, or REI goes broke.

The Milo II's are a SICK shoe, and will be out towards the end of the month. I got to fondle some the other day and I personally can't wait. The heel cup is tighter compared to the last Milo, and all the fabric is built heavier, for the durability issues people didn't care for from the last shoe.

I have been saving a free shoe coupon from KEEN since BSF for the women's verison of the Milo. I hope they come out at the same time. :yay:

"And most important – they are also coming out in a women’s specific model – made on a women’s specific inner shoe last to provide better fit for women."

finally! now i can stop boycotting them... oh, except the pair i got from the BSF are already coming apart both inside and out and never, ever kept my feet dry despite the "keen dry" system... gonna have to stick with salomons... i did think the keens were quite comfortable out of the box, but have not been impressed with their performance... also stepped on a sharp rock and it cut right thru the sole and into my little patootsie... ouch!

I'd throw in Montrail, North Face, Keen and Asolo for sheer toughness. North Face runs too wide for me but they are killer shoes. I've owned at least one pair of each brand (I have 4 pairs of Keens right now) and they all work for golfing. Try ebay for sweet deals. I paid 20 bucks for my last pair of Merrells!!! With shipping. Just got my first pair of "good" shoes, Montrails, thank you Next Adventure, Stumptown, scrip winnings, et al. They sure fit my feet nicely, they are light and comfortable (and Gore-Tex, allegedly waterproof, we'll see about that, Team Golf is coming, I doubt ANY "waterproof" shoes will keep water out for more than one winter).

GoreTex will keep em dry, but like you said, only for about one season of wet weather golf. That's about the useful lifespan of any disc golf shoe for me anyway.

Picked these Merrell Chameleon 3 on ebay for a decent price.

It's time for me to replace last year's winter shoe. I couldn't find the XT Wings I wanted with GoreTex without paying at least a bill. I've heard plenty of positive things about Vasque shoes so I'm trying out a pair of Vasque Breeze Low VST GoreTex that I found for about half of full retail. See how it goes...

I've got those and they have been absolutely great through our very wet spring and summer. They have excellent stability and are not too heavy.
