Hey Everyone,
I just wanted to pass along a little sad news. Sean Phillips Broke his leg this last weekend while riding quads up near Longview Washington. I have no details of the break but I believe he had to go into surgery on Monday at the St. Johns Medical Center in Longview.
Lets all wish him well and a speedy recovery. I am thinking Sean will not make it to Worlds this year!!!:(

What a drag. Here is hoping you have a speedy recovery Sean. I have a femur nail (rod that runs from my hip to my knee inside the bone). It only took about a month on crutches the I was back walking. Bonus When I broke my leg I use to slice the ball in ball golf Broken leg helped me to hit more off my front foot and the ball started to hook. Half full-half empty. jub

I'll risk saying it, but 3 months is not enough time for something of that magnitude. I have broken my tibia, my brother broke both his fibula and tibia at the same time for 25 screws and it took 3 months just for the cast part without rehab. If there were 4-5 months, i might say there were a chance for Sean, but 3 months, that is risking future years of disc golf for one tournament, I would say make sure the leg is 100 percent before hitting a course again, but for sure practice putting in the yard as much as he can... Had a friend in another state mess up his knee and he gambled on a tournament or two before rehabbing his knee, now it's in worse off shape and he can't disc golf 100 percent anymore...

Hope you heal fast sean!! thats one of the shittiest things to have happen... disc golf season over :(
edited because I noticed him being registered for the beaver state. Maybe this means i can get a spot! Seeing as how i was told 20 spots were being saved for touring pros and being the highest rated player in WA i wasnt considered one of those. hint hint hint...

Sean shattered his fibula and tibula! His foot slipped off while riding and in trying to catch his balance his leg was pulled and run over by the quad.
Well wishes Sean!!

Sean, I would like to challenge you to a bag tag match today. If you do not show up I automatically get your tag. Ha-ha just kidding.
I am so sorry that happened at the height of your push to pro stardom. I don't even want to think how painful that must have been for you getting mauled by a wild four wheeler. My advice is to take your time to heal properly and do not rush the recovery and make things worse in the long run. Think on the bright side; at least you are not paralyzed. I don't think they have disc golf in the Paralympics. Take care man.

WOW bad news travels fast. I just got out of the hospital. After two surgeries my tibia and fibula are rodded, plated, and screwed together. Doc says everything went really well. He estimates a solid two months on crutches. Thank you all for the good wishes.

The one of the paramedics asked if I had been awake the whole time. When I said yes he seemed a bit surprised. I pretty much went into shock right away and didn't feel too much pain until they had to take my boot off. :bricks:

Sean,
That looks like a relatively clean break, was there any bone fragments they had to removed or were they forced to leave them in there?
Can we see an X-ray of the leg with the Ti pins and plates?
Sean Phillips
May 11th, 2009, 03:24 PM
No X-Rays with the rods and screws yet. Maybe Friday, I have a follow up appointment.
No bone fragments were mentioned. Doc said everything fit back together very well and should heal relatively fast.
But it's been a week now and my leg still hurts like hell. I'm on a steady diet of Vicodin and I hate pain pills cuz they mess with my stomach. This is by far the worst thing I've done to myself and will do everything I can not to do it again. This is even worse than fracturing my T4 and T5 vertebrates, much worse.

Fractures and compound fractures clearly not the same category.
So share a little if you can what happened and where you were at when it happened and how long it took to get you to the hospital!
Here is a little story about my friends accident:
My friend was living in Maui (tough I know) and he was out with three friends open ocean wake boarding behind a 3 man 150+ hp jet ski. They use a surf board with toe clips very similar to big wave surfing. He was on a 100 foot tow rope and the other two were on the jet ski, one sitting backwards with the Ski flag and the other driving.
The driver and flag man communicated to my friend that they were going to turn around and started the turn. My friend made the transition but got caught in a trough due to the finishing angle the driver choose against the waves. My friend, a very good wake boarder and surfer, attempted to correct for the driver by creating his own angle over the wave to his right and to set up a better line on a wave for the smooth riding.
Unfortunately the flagger, driver and boarder mis-communicated which resulted in my friend taking a 3-4 foot drop off the wave to the next trough. Typically not a problem but my friends back leg was jerked out of the toe clips on the board and his full weight came down on his front foot and snap goes the Femur. He had a compound fracture of the femur and was loosing a lot of blood, by the time the jet ski made it back around my friend was laying in a cloud of blood about 12 feet in diameter.
Worried about sharks and the 30 minute ride back to shore the flagger bailed from the jet ski, removed my friend from the water and put him on the jet ski, the flagger left the board behind, made a make shift splint out of the flag/stick and covered the wound with his rash guard.
The ride back was choppy and my friend passed out many, many times. He would regain consciousness scream for a while and then pass out again. The driver called 911 and had the paramedics waiting at the boat ramp. My friend was unconscious for the last 10 minutes of the ride and the ambulance ride to the hospital. He woke up in time to sign the permission to operate form before they put him under.
He had a severe fracture with many bone fragments, thus the intense screaming and passing out on the choppy ride back I guess. Needless to say, he healed up after a year and still has the scars to show for. He also had the $47,000 dollars in hospital bills to help him remember. This guy was no wimp either and had taken many nasty spills in big waves and some pretty bad coral scrappings, broke his ankle and a few ribs. He also blew out his ear drum twice and lost a little hearing each time. He said the compound fracture by far was the worse physical pain he ever felt.

Haha... oh boy, this reminds me of my brothers football injury, guess who had to give him baths, the viocodin, breakfast, lunch, dinner... all during our freshman year in college, gosh that sucked...
He was the running back for our college team, a high snap went over the QB, my bro runs back to save it from being a safety, sure enough 3 linebackers are already right behind him, the weight of 2 of them pushed down on the lower leg as the 3rd linebacker was under the leg, you know what happens, looks kinda like sean's xray but nothing poked through the skin but rather twisted at an angle, sounded like a shot gun going off, everyone got off in a hurry, and my bro threw the last guy off screaming and then saw his leg and passed out... 3 plates, 25 screws and 44 staples later, he was in my dorm room saying, bro, I'm sorry, but ya my bish now... 12 straight weeks of taking care of him in a wheel chair, crutches, food, even going to parties in a wheel chair, he had his fun... was back in action in 3 months but not without a lot of paranoia and wearing a good sports ankle brace since 7 of the screws were in the ankle. Been 7 years and they still in there, can feel every darn screw when feeling his leg... Talked to him recenlty about it, said its all cool... Sean will be ok since Disc Golf is a noncontact sport, but no hurry and make sure you got a real cool person to give you your baths hehehehe... Some of the guys on our floor were a little awkward walking into the bathroom and seeing one bro lifting his other naked bro in and out of the bathtub and all of that but it had to be done lol...

I was at Barlow Point near Longview, WA. There's multiple large MX tracks that are open to ATVs. However, I will admit they are a bit too big for most ATVs. After riding for most of the day my friend and I found out that the biggest track was almost empty. So we were riding around, rolling most of the jumps at first. There was one jump there that was perfect for me. A table top about 12' high, 30' long. I could hit it in 3rd gear and it would throw me up for a perfect landing on the down slope. It was the biggest, most fun jump I had ever hit. After successfully jumping this and a couple other slightly smaller jumps a dozen or more times my confidence started to swell. :rolleyes2: I started with the shortest double there and was clearing that pretty well. I was working my way up. Trying to clear the jumps one by one. We were cruising around the track. I was coming up to one particular step down and couldn't remember how far the landing was. At some point before the launch I started speeding up :rolleyes2: launched off the ramp. The landing was a good 5 feet down from the top of the launch. I fell from 10+' above the landing ramp and landed a bit short. Landed hard, my quad bottomed out (raptor 700 without the adequate suspension upgrades for large MX tracks with a 230 lb rider) I bounced off the seat and foot pegs. Me and my quad were a little airborne again. I aimed to land back on my quad but my right foot missed the peg. My foot hit the ground and got ate up by my rear tire. So I ran my right foot over with my right rear tire but stayed on the quad the whole time. I coasted forward to where my friend was waiting and looked down at my foot angled about 60 degrees off of where it should be. I shouted and slide off the quad to the ground, straightened my leg out and asked my buddy to call 911. The paramedics were there pretty quickly, probably close to 30 minutes. Taking my boot off made me scream, even after the shot of morphine. After a very bumpy ambulence ride out of the MX park and back to the hospital I had my first surgery that evening. Next surgery was the next day. Doctor put in a large rod from the knee to the ankle with some screws to keep it in place. He wasn't real detailed when he told me about everything. Overall I'm pretty unsatisfied with my doctor. He hasn't answered my questions about my return to work or filled out my disability paperwork yet.n:pullhair:
That's about it. Sorry about the novel.

That looks so painful! I'd have passed out for sure!
I'd also ask the doctor for Percocet rather than the Vicodin. Helps with the pain, but doesn't give you the queasy stomach. And even though you don't like taking the pain pills, it really is best to take them regularly (as prescribed) and stay ahead of the pain. They don't seem to work as well when you wait until you're already hurting badly.
Hang in there!

Well sean, since my brother went through a verryyyy similar accident, breaking the fibula and tibula almost exactly where you did yours and he has 3 plates and 25 screws and he can play basketball and softball no problem... so yes, get a 2nd opinion fast, that dosen't look right at all for something that could be plated and screwed easily, and should have been done already at the same time as the other one.

SO, I called my doctors office this morning. My doc is on vacation until the end of next week. I swear that dude is on vacation every time I call. :pullhair: So I ask to see any doctor in the facility. Next available appointment is mid next week. I said all I want is somebody to look at some X-rays and tell me if they look good or not. They set me up with an appointment with a nurse practitioner. So I go in. Nobody in the building can look at the X-rays I have because nobody has a CD-ROM drive. :pullhair: So I explain what's happening, the nurse practitioner explains she can't help me and will make a call to set me up with an ortho specialist. She leaves to help me get the earliest possible appointment. When she comes back she said that she spoke briefly with one of the doctors and he told her that they don't do anything for the fibula when it breaks. WEIRD
So I guess this is how it's supposed to be. The doctor that did the operation said that after some time that the bone would fuse together and be stronger that it was before the break.
Any Opinions?
