Anyone interested in a PDGA superclass tourney?

Potentially at another temp course or one of our permanent Seattle courses (North Park/Terrace Creek). We had good interest in Greenwood, could use this again or another park because the holes will be a lot shorter for superclass (discovery?, ravenna? interlaken?, other ideas?).

Most likely $15 or so with a free superclass disc for everyone - just for fun, no payout?

I am very interested in trying this out. might even be able to convince friends/roommates who've been reluctant to join me for golf to give this a shot.

The issue of venue seems to include a choice of priority for your target demographic. A permanent course is more likely to draw (and expose) DGers to superclass. And I would think that, as a potential superclass TD, you'd want as many tournament-experienced DGers as possible in attendance to help things run smoothly at an event with an unusually high number of total newcomers. HOWEVER, holding a tourney in a park w/o a permanent course increases the likelihood of exposure to non-DGers, which is probably the primary aim of this new format in the first place.

Wherever it is held, it would be good to put up some event fliers at nearby parks frequented by ultimate players, as well as local courses.

For my own personal enjoyment, I would love to play at any of the non-DG parks you mentioned, especially Woodland or Discovery. Despite the relative lack of space, Ravenna might be a good option even if only for its proximity (easy walking distance) to the UW, and the prospect of attracting students of the competitive- or casual ultimate persuasions. If a superclass event were to be held at Ravenna, I would be more than happy to put fliers at some nearby hotspots for ultimate, as well as throughout the park itself.

Sounds 'Super' fun... one more vote for Discovery Park here, but I'm sure Andrew will design an excellent course no matter what venue he decides upon-- for anyone that didn't get a chance to play at the first annual 'Pretzel Bowl' that Andrew ran at Woodland Park, the course(s) were very well thought out and made good use of the terrain, which resulted in some really neat pin placements...
Andrew, I was wondering if you've considered making this a one disc tourney---'No', says Edge with his dialed-in Sonic!

Sign me up, for sure. I was actually just researching Superclass regulations and discs yesterday, good timing!

As to the venue, North Park would be well suited to it, except that I believe part of the agreement when it was installed was that there were to be no "organized events" there. Plus, it'd be tough to have a regulated tourney there with all the action it gets on the weekends. Terrace would be a possibility, some of the holes would be true par 4's and maybe even 5's. Lakewood in all the short positions could be fun too, though again, might be tough to have a tourney there on the weekend if there's a good turnout (you can reserve the course, but it costs ~$300 ).

I really enjoyed the Ice Bowl, and think doing something similar would be the best route. Kyle made some good points in regards to introducing new non-DGers to the scene. Discovery and Woodland are both good bets. I haven't been to Volunteer Park, but we were talking about great parks in Seattle on the way to the Port Angeles tourney and Mark said that he always thought about holes there while walking around. I haven't been to Interlaken or Ravenna, so can't say for those either. I'd like to put Hamlin in Shoreline into the mix. It's a sweet piece of land with lots of trees and elevation, and I know it has Ultimate being played on a regular basis in the fields, so that could draw in a bunch of participants right there.

Hmm...just thinking out loud here...with all the sweet parks in the Seattle metro area, how cool would it be to have a Superclass series that tours the different parks? I guess we should see how a standalone goes before doing anything in that respect, but I for one, think that would be great for the scene and tons of fun.

Superclass sounds about as fun as RIPT.....Three Headed Monster.....Benson State Park.....playing in sustained 50 mph winds.....contracting Swine Flu.....a night with All2commons mom....etc....

I spent my childhood in Magnolia and spent many days at Discovery Park. I have been in the Portland area for 10 years and always thought that Discovery Park would be an excelent place for a course. Just curious if anyone has explored this idea and what the feedback was.

Jeez, no need to threadcrap. While I don't ever see myself permanently hanging up my bag in favor of all Superclass, I think it'd be a fun way to mix it up a little and introduce more players to the sport. Besides, if it wasn't any fun, then disc golf would never have gotten to where it is now.

I think he meant that as a compliment. Last weekend he got RIPT and played 3 headed monster in 50 MPH sustained winds at Benson with All2Common's mom. He seemed to be enjoying himself.

Similar, but most superclass discs are faster and handle wind better. :dancing:

Also, I voted before I read the thread and realized this is for Seattle. Oops. I got a Zephyr a month or so ago, and it's actually really fun. Especially for shorter courses, it adds a fun challenge.

I would say the opposite, superclass discs are more like "oldschool" discs (pre-XD) and as a group, I would say do not fly as fast or handle wind as good.

I've been checking out a few parks in the area. North Park is out because they apparently cannot run tournaments there and I took a long walk through Hamlin park which was definitely cool but I couldn't find any piece of it that wasn't very wooded. Might be a long, annoying day for people playing with entirely new plastic. The land that the Shoreline course is on seemed like it would be a good fit for a superclass tournament.

I'm going to keep looking at parks so let me know if you guys think of any more that would be good for DG.

Let me add a few things to the list:

.......about as fun as putting with an Aviar......waiting in a five group back-up on hole #6 at the Eugene Celebration......watching Heros seasons 2 and 3.......being a Mariners fan for the past two years.......listening to Dave Feldberg talk about why he lost a tournament......AM Worlds in 2007.......etc....:wink2:

Yeah! It's like drinking a Bartles and James wine cooler on a hot summer day!

Wait... that might not make Jason's list of things he hates... :whistler:

I was thinking of "running" some "Super Class" events in place of Doubles the day prior to some events.
OR even as an option to Dubs, since SO many people like the dubs rounds.
