This year the Lakewood Open is going to be held on June 20 & 21.

There are a couple of options available if you'd like to get registered to play the event. You can go to the Lakewood website (http://www.lakewooddiscgolf.com/LKWD/Home.html) and navigate to the flyer from the top of the page or hit the link that will direct you to TitleDisc (http://titledisc.com/) for online registration.

Check out the Current Registration (http://www.pdga.com/tournament-results?TournID=9159) to see who's already signed up.

If the online registration fills and you know you want to play the event, please send me an email to get yourself on the wait list. I am planning on adding some extra holes which means there will likely be some players getting in off of the wait list (if there is one)

You're going to love Lakewood. It's manicured (mowed), and has fun, rolling terrain with interesting shapes and great topography. A good mix of holes with a healthy dose of elevation change, mutiple ponds, water, bathrooms and shelters on the course, good benches & signs, multiple parking lots, and only 10 minutes from SeaTac! I'm already signed up!

The baskets get moved quite regularily at Lakewood, so you may not be able to play the tournament layout until the day of.
The layout as of last Saturday has #12 in the short position, at 300', the tourney layout has this hole at 600', so you wont be able to practice that one right now.

#1 is in the right position, its usual spot , and most likely would be there for a tourney.
#2 is long and right, up by the fence, probably the most likely placement for the tourney.
#3 is long
#4 is a fixed target, so its ready to go.
You can play #5 to both its short, right, and long dogleg left baskets, both are in place.
#6 has both short and long tees, to a single basket position, so you could play both.
#7 also has 2 tees, the coffin tee as well as an alternate tee above and to the left, play both for practice.
#8 and #9 are fixed baskets and tees.
#10 is short for baseball season and should remain there for the tournament.
#11 basket moves alot, but the placement is all in the same area, so playing it where it is now is good enough practice.
#12, like I said is short, it will probably be long for the tourney.
#13 has multiple basket locations, but all are in the same general area, so it should play close to where it is now.
#14 basket always lives up behind the big cedar, so no surprises there.
#15 is currently in its longest configuration, with the basket deep and right of the pond, be careful with your upshot here, the pond is pretty nasty.
#16 is in its short left position, I would expect it to be deep and right for the tourney.
#17 is in the long position, so its ready for tourney play.
#18 is currently on the island in the parking area, this is the usual tourney postion, with the surrounding pavement being O.B..

Ok, now go tear it up. :biggrin2:

The "normal" way this is run, first round everything short as possible, second round either middle or long (if there is no middle,) and the last round is everything in long. So you get to play it all!
Oh, and there's usually three or four added temp holes as well.

Sitting at 40 right now, though I don't know if Eric has received new ones. I do expect the event to fill, I think it's more a matter of "when" than "if". Really hard to say when it'll happen though, if people are interested in playing this event, I'd recommend erring on the side of caution and registering earlier than later.

Regarding the layout for the open, Cold Steel's recap is correct. Tim and I will try and get the baskets into the first round positions a couple of days before the event.

If you are on the fence about signing up for Lakewood you should know that I have a very generous refund policy. Just let me know ahead of time if you can't make it and I'll be glad to give you a refund (minus online reg fee). There has always been a waiting list for the tourney and if I know you aren't going to be there then it's very easy to fill that spot. I do try and keep the online info about registration up to date, just take a look at the pdga sched. for that info.

Mystjava
May 16th, 2009, 08:42 AM
Hey Eric.. is that the same "refund" for the Fort Steilacoom policy also?
If so.. I might be tempted to do that so I don't have to play there over the fourth of July.. I'm having second thoughts on it.. (sorry..) But I am coming to the Lakewood Open!!!

The nearest "real" camping is Saltwater State Park which is a bit south of Burien on I5, but it is currently closed until "further notice". Yay. Hence my offering of backyard lawnspace.

Here's a copy/paste of Eric's email that went out, in case anyone isn't on his email list.

Hi folks,

You are probably aware that the Lakewood Open has once again filled
early and the tournament is approaching fast, less than one week to go!.

I set up a block of time to meet with the Parks maintenance crew to have
them use their front loader to drop wood chips around the course for us.
I'm hoping a few of you can stop to help spread the chips out and make
the course look extra beautiful for the tourney. I'll be meeting them
near the number 12 tee pad (Geezer way) at 10:00 am with my metal rake
in hand. I'll also bring a few garbage bags and if we have the manpower
then maybe we can do some trash pickup as well. Please consider joining
the crew to help spruce up Lakewood on Tuesday, June 16th at ten in the
morning! Bring a rake if you've got one.

BTW: the course will be closed to casual play during the tournament
rounds but all are welcome to play the 22 hole layout during the lunch
break if they'd like to (hopefully around 1:30-2:00pm)

Cheers, Eric

Also, I plan on being out at the course some time later this week to work on painting circles and whatnot. If anyone is interested in helping out, just let me know.

Cold Steel is correct, there will be 4 added holes, the same ones as last year, though there may be slightly minor modifications to the pin/pad placements.

I am slightly nervous about playing here - I will be playing somewhat blind on this course since I was only able to play a few holes on it during the first Friday of June.
Right now I have to go find a mechanic to work on my car so I can drive over to play.. grump! Anything and wishes for positive thoughts please!!!

Ken Smith
June 16th, 2009, 03:43 PM
I think you'll find it's a fair course, no terribly frustrating holes (although #13 can be a pisser if your great drive rolls ob, but that's another story). A few pins are hard to see, but your group will be able to help you. It's a very nice course! Good luck.

Hey Dan! Which hole did Mike ace(and what round)? Wish I could've played this year, but I sprained my ankle a few weeks prior while playing softball.

Someone told me that construction begins in a month or two, and that Lakewood will be taking on some major changes-- if this is true, I hope that a few holes are designed to bring water hazards into play--(it is "Lakewood" after all) such as the temp' beach hole and perhaps another crossing that southeast corner of the lake... maybe it's time to start a new thread>>>

Tim
June 25th, 2009, 05:51 AM
I'm not Dan, but Mike got #9 and then splashed chains on #10 short...all part of his hot final comeback round on Sunday. Good old Andy "Acepot" Faris also got #1 in the short on Saturday.

As for the construction, I haven't heard anything about it beginning any time soon. Originally, I think it was slated to start in a couple months, which was part of the reason for moving the Lakewood Open earlier in the year. With the economy being what it is though, the last I've heard about the project is that it's "delayed indefinitely." But yeah, there is a decent chance that this was the last year that the Open could be played in this layout.
