I love reading about people breaking thier personal best, so i thought this topic would be fun. If you beat your PB post it here. I'll start...... I beat my PB at Frog creek (shale city) with a -3 recently! My old best was even. Man that course is tough.:yay:

My personal best on the course I live on was set over two years ago. It was playing over my head then, a -4. I had 50 more feet on my drive then, as I was soon to rip a pectoral completely from my sternum. All my longest drives and lowest scores were BI (before injury). Last week I tossed a -2 and followed it with an even par. My personal best, AI. It shows what can be done with the short game. I feel that another -4 is not out of reach.

Bob, I remember when you were aiming at par on your home course. Do you remember this?

I love this idea. This is an awesome idea for a thread. I will post more when I have somethign that qualifies for a post in this thread.

personal best at cascades gateway is -6, corban in 9 holes is -4, adair +5, milo is +6, Horning's is -2 on my first and only try *had a double bogey and 2 bogeys*, even at timber, +5 at dabney.... hmmmm... -4 at champooeg, -4 at hoover, -2 at ewing...

So... this touchs on an idea I had when we were getting this site going. I want to have a page that each board member has control over where they can keep their pb at any course they play on. There are hacks out there where people keep details about their cars.... I can't imagine altering that hack to serve our purposes would be that hard.

Having a "coding" get-together on Sunday to get the fantasy DG game started so will discuss it then.

Great thread.

Hit my personal best at Pier twice a couple of weeks ago. Old PB was +4. Got +3, and a couple of days later shot +1.

Shot my PB over the last few weekend rounds I've played recently.
Timber -2 previous was +1
Pier Even (I was -2 with hole 18 to play and got a  5) previous was +2
Horning's -1 previous was +1

Well, I have thrown Trojan at even, have thrown the 18-hole course at the Mud at +3, and threw Skyline at even. Those are the only ones I can remember.

Just got my personal best at dexter a few weeks ago... -7 with 3 bogeys...
Also just shot my best at Adair in one of Dion's tournaments -5...

Wow this thread filled up quick! I love it, keep em comin. I shot my PB at Tom Pearce in the SOSS tourney with a -2 for the win in advanced!:trophy: Also i recently went to portland and played Milo :bowing: I shot a +3 for 18 and +5 for 27 at Milo (pro pads) which is now my new favorite course ever! and an even par at pier, which is also a beautiful course.

pb @ Orchard on 10/8/07: -6.:yay: Got a 2 on #1,2,3,4,5,9. After that one round I wrote down my score and I quit playing that day.

If I can ever finally shoot an even par at Milo or Dexter you can be sure I'll stop in here and let everyone know!

Whistler's I think I shot even once but I still haven't done it at Hagg yet. At most other Oregon course I can get a negative score on a good day. I don't keep track of my scores after the round ends when I'm just out golfing for fun so I don't remember all the exact figures for most of my PB rounds.

Ol' Bob
September 11th, 2008, 09:09 AM
I should have mentioned that in my one and only trip to Dabney, I was in the zone. That was Before Injury (BI). I tossed a +2 on my first round and a +4 on my second.

My scores at Pier were too high to keep track, as were all my scores at Trojan (until my last trip there). Last round at Trojan was either +3 or +4, depending on whether #5 is a par 3 or 4.

That's all the away courses I've played. I've been told to try Milo, but I have a feeling it's for the big arms.

Milo is simply one of the most epic courses around. It will challenge anyone's game, but it is also a majestic place to spend a day disc golfing regardless of how many throws it takes. It has a mix of holes that will allow you to break out all the tricks in your bag, not just distance. I'm certain you would enjoy it.

Maybe this is sacrilege, but McIver just doesn't excite me the way it does most people around here. I feel like it's way too much about making huge drives in relatively open fields; it feels like a ball golf course. (I thought I read somewhere that it actually used to be a golf course, which would make sense.)

(I thought I read somewhere that it actually used to be a golf course, which would make sense.)With the exception of a couple holes, I don't view the course that way at all. Placement > Distance is the general rule for low scores at Milo. I should know - I can't throw that far!

I agree with this sentiment. Though I think that Milo is one of the "must see" courses, I don't understand the love affair most people have with it. Then again, I get to throw at Trojan and Lucky Mud every weekend, so maybe I just have a different perspective on what I want from a disc golf course...

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying McIver's not a great course... I just don't think it's leaps and bounds above all the others. I have a lot more fun at Timber or Horning's; when I leave Milo I just feel beat.

Wait, this is the Personal Bests thread, so I'll report that a couple weekends ago I shot -3 at Champoeg, which was my PB. If I hadn't landed on the road on #13 it would have been -4.

Last week I finally shot under par at Willamette (-1). It seems to have always had my number plus I usually play Adair where my best is (-3, 51). My PB at Dexter is even shot during EC07 and is my highest rated tournament round. At Bryant my PB is (+3, 60) but that was before the current layout change. I still haven't played new hole #12 at Bryant but I hear that it is getting more playable every week. I'll find out this Saturday at the DGCA monthly.

It was never actually used as a ball golf course. It was started, but the developer pulled out before the course was completed. I'm pretty sure this was in the late 60's. When I heard this the first time, it was like a lightbulb going off in my head. I never considered it, but once I thought about it I could totally envision the golf fairways.

I disagree that Milo is all about hitting wide open shots. I don't throw any farther than 300' and love the course. Milo rewards smart golf and good shot placement. Somebody who bombs one 450' may not be in any better shape than the guy who threw 300, if he's on the wrong spot on the fairway or, even worse, in the rough.

Apparently this thread has inspired my play lately, because I have shot my PB at 4 courses in the past 3 weeks. Here they are in chronological order...
-7 at Lunchtime on August 25th (only good enough for 2nd place at Lunchtime League for the week)
-6 at Hornings on September 5th (I double bogeyed 18...oops)
-7 at Pier Park on September 14th (I followed it up with a -4)
-11 at Champoeg on September 15th (and I missed one of the short holes)
Somewhere along the way I shot -8 at Greenway (I missed a 15 footer on 9 that would have made it -9)

I'll enjoy the mojo while it's here, because it will go away as quickly as it came.

2 bucks per person, match play, winner takes all.
Matt Crider, Torry Tuft, Eric Mathias, Zac, and myself.

I birdied 2, 3, (I missed a 10 foot putt on 5, my putter bounced back), 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12, 13, 15, and 17.

I put most of my drives inside of the circle and made putts from there. I did make 40 footers on 8 and 13.

I birdied 1, 3, 6, 12, and smacked a tree on 5 for a bogey. I also got a four on 18 (dammit!) leaving me at -2. (My previous PB was also -2, but that was on a day when ALL the holes were in the short position.)

If I was a better putter, I'd have also birdied 4 and 17, and maybe 10 and 16, and I wouldn't have had those two bogeys.

I'm not trying to be a piss-ant; I just want people to know that Bryant does have 18 baskets. #12 is pretty rough, but there's a tee area, a fairway (of sorts), and a basket. (Hell, it's better marked than #2 and #17!) I think I got a 5.

Finally shot -1 at Skyline today. Beats the par round I had there a few weeks ago. I know its not -10 under, or anything, but, I'll take my bests, whatever they may be. Also, had the closest ace experience yet. It was a second throw on 11. Tried with the Buzzz to start, flew wide by about five feet. Tried the new FLX Drone I've been carrying (but not throwing), and hit center chains, only to pop back out. To the disc's credit, I hit a fairway ace with it on the very next hole! Ok. Sorry. I'm done now.

Except to say this. If Ol' Bob had actually JOINED us out there for the round, that ace might have stuck...

An absoulutely gorgeous day to play golf yesterday. I had one round at HH, and shot a PB -2. I was at -5 late in the round, but had a little slide at the end.

I played Rockwood/Vance last week and shot -5 at Rockwood and -7 at Vance (after 7 holes, no less).

For me, a 3 on 13 and 18 are pretty much unattainable for me right now. So when I have that hot round going early on I pretty much know that I'm going to come back down to earth.

I got a 3 on #13, once. I once strung together a 3 on #18, but at least 2 of the 3 shots were second attempts. :biggrin2:

I definitely come closer to parring #13 than #18, at any rate.

I really like #18 because it requires three really good shots to par it. I don't know what makes a hole a "signature" hole, but I always think of that hole when I think of HH.

My best on 13 was about a 40' putt for three that just missed.

On 18, I'm usually on the right side (farthest from the basket) of the swamp after two throws. I still need a great upshot to get a four on that one.

I have one 3 on 18 that I hit with a LONG shot from the swampy area. Every other time has been a 4 or higher. 13 I was scoring par on regularly when I first started playing there... but now it is like 80/20 3/4.

I really, really, like hole 18. I think it's arguably the best hole out there (on that course. Dunno if there are better holes planned/being installed).

I like it because it is Milo-esque. It requires you to consider strategy off the tee. It allows for multiple approaches to how you throw your tee shot, (forehand, backhand, backhand-roller, etc.) and it has great terrain.

I love it so much, I think I will marry it.

I finally shot a -9 at Rockwood. Did it about a month ago with Ty Baker in company. It's funny, I don't remember much about the round other that Ty and I talking about house remodeling. I got to hole 9, drove, then walked down the fairway and started thinking about my score because I had lost track and then realized I was at 8 down. Had to make a 25 footer for -9.

I went -4, -5, -4, -8. So as far as I know, the "Course Record" is now set at -8. I think that's beatable, so go get it. I really want to firm up a -10, I think that would stand for quite some time.

Oh, and Kyle's brother (I can't remember his name) got Leverich's first ace on hole....9! I was not expecting 9 to be the first ace, more like hole 2, 8, or 12. He threw a forehand that was laying in the basket when they walked up, nice job! Gotta love the acing the first day a course is open!

Cool to see him playing in it. Yep he definitely is the one to beat at this point. He has tons of game. He proved that at the HAB REC. Now I know you won't be playing MA3 Darr. Who wants, "beat by a 14 year old" on their disc golf resume? Say, aren't the new ratings coming out this week? It will be interesting to see who is still sub 900 and eligible to be playing MA3. You know I am just messing with you. It is wise for you to continue to play up. It will make you better. This will be my last MA3 event as I am playing with the old dudes next year and there is no sub 900 catagory for over 40 players. I get to go back to the bottom of the pack for a while.

Nice shooting Gwillim!

I shot -2 and -6 on my two rounds. I saw you out there hitting birds in the dark when I was leaving so I didn't think the 6 down was going to stand for long.

I think your 100% correct that -10 will be the record shortly. #3 and #4 are going to be the tough ones to get. Although with the right distance you could end up just outside the forest area on 3 with a good look at a 20-30 footer for a 2. #4 is going to be tough until it gets cleared out a little bit for use. There are windows there but they are very very tight right now.

Good times to everyone that was out at LP yesterday!

Feel kinda weird posting this when everyone else is posting under-par scores, but I had one of my best days ever on any course when I threw a +6 at Riverside. I've only been playing a little over a year--in my early days I only got out maybe once every month, but have been getting out once every week or so, and have seen my mid-range game rapidly improve. I honestly think that the key to lowering scores is working hard on your second shot, and getting it into a workable position.

I had a great day out at Horning's today. Shot -10 on the new short course, then -3 (ties my PB) on the long course, then -13 on the short course.

(I should have had a new PB of -4 on the normal course, but somehow I bogeyed 16. :headbang: On the bright side, my approach shot actually went past the basket on #13, and I parred it.)

And my friend Duane aced #4 on the short course with a lefty backhand.

Wow. Really similar to my day today. First time playing the new course, and I went -7 new, -4 old (pb) and -12 new.

Also, like Adam, I should have done 1 better, but I stupidly bogeyed hole 17. My approach also went past the basket on 13, and I made the putt, for my first par on that hole.

Also, I had 5 turkeys today. I've definitely never come close to that before.

And it was an especially beautiful day.

Haven't played Timber for a very long time. Thought I'd give it a try before heading out for the Slosh Series in a couple of weeks. Old PB was ~ +7. I shot even my first round. Came down to a 30' uphill putt on 18 to seal it.
Almost canned an ace, too. Hole 14, in the short position. Low forehand shot straight up the fairway, curled to the right at the last minute, hit the ground about 30' short, skipped up and hit center chains HARD, and bounced out. Very fun.

Timber is now 19 holes, but it doesn't seem likely that the numbers on the original 18 will ever change (seeing as how they're stenciled on the teepads)... should we call the new first hole #0?

As I understand it, the concept of the new hole and parking lot hasn't really caught on. There were three or for groups out there when I left yesterday, but I was the only one parked in the new lot. From what I hear, most people play the new hole as #19.

Are the numbers really stenciled on the teepads? I was looking at them yesterday and honestly didn't notice anything. The baskets are numbered, but I think the numbers bolt on and could easily be moved.

Bruce
February 1st, 2009, 02:12 AM
From my understanding a few holes have longer, non cemented "pro" pads. Which by the way, while I like having cement pads...they need rough texture in the northwest guys! Those pads out there are slick when wet.

TreeLove
February 1st, 2009, 10:12 AM
We greatly appreciate the pads at Trojan, and we are grateful to PGE for installing them. One common pitfall of teepad installation is having them finished by professional finishers. Most professional concrete workers have never even seen a disc golf course (except Stan) in their lives. In their line of work, they have produced many different needed surface textures. Problem is, they have never produced one as rough as is required by a disc golf tee pad. Steady Ed said on of the best finishing techniques is the "skreet-it-and-leave-it" technique, which is counter-intuitive for professional installers. They may spend hours achieving the perfect finish, and may not understand the concept of performing no finish work at all. Steve Yang even brought the recommended astro-turf drag broom, but he was fooolishly shut down by the others when it did not work instantly, but all it needed was some weight on it and it would have worked great.

Anyway, I have repaired teepads with bad finishes. Often, a shiny glaze will form on top, or like in this case, not rough enough. The glaze will eventually wear off (as will a rough finish), but you can speed the process. What I have done (WITH A MASK ON!) is to use a power grinder to grind off the glaze, and to grind a waffle pattern into the teepad surface. Of course, once the pad absorbs water, freezes, and thaws, all the tiny outcroppings start breaking off easily. That's why the installer recommended sealant. Sealant keeps the water out of the concrete. But it can make it slippery. The installer recommended a mixture of sealant to stop the water, solvent to thin the sealant, and Shark Skin, a sand-like rough substance that you mix in to the sealant and apply every few years.

Speaking of Tee pads; another group of yahoos drove around Pier sometime between Wednesday and this morning. The damage this time installed another set of tracks around Tee pad nine, and included the shattering of the concrete pad itself. Shot a -10 at Dexter today, awesome start to the round -7 after 8, missing only hole #5. It was my first deuce on #6 in the right position. Then I got 11, 12 and 14. Couldn't get a bird on the last 4 though so I stayed at -10. I feel like I should have broken the record but I am trying to be happy with a personal best.

Had a great afternoon out at Hirnings roday. Finally made it out there to play the short course. I ended the round at -1 which was my first ever sub par round. :trophy: I then started the larger course with 8 straight pars, and then :explode: with an overall bad score.

So to combine threads for a second and answer Bob's other thread, I started playing around June, and this was my first below par round. And most definitely not the last!!!

Then go now; a lot of the holes are in the short positions, including #4, #8, #13, and #16.

It's a great time to play Rooster East, too. Yes, the downed fir tree is still blocking #5, but the autumn stinging nettles are gone and the spring ones haven't popped up yet, and the blackberries in the ravine below #8 and #9 are at a minimum.

Dexter is mostly in the short positions right now so it is playing easier than usual but I have been playing better there than ever before in the last few weeks. For my last 4 singles rounds I am -34 with 35 birdies and 1 bogey. I shot a -10 and a -8 in the last couple weeks and then a -7 and a -9 this afternoon. I had a nice drive hit basket on #1 in the long but roll out to 30 feet (and then I missed), but it was cool to hit metal on that shot.

It has been fun getting a few good punches in on Dexter while it is set up easy since it beats me up so badly in the longs.

38? Wow.

But no problem, I can still tie him.

I'll just change the record from "all-time high score" to "all-time high score set during Squander League."* I figure my claim to a piece of this record is good at least until next Saturday.

Then I shot +1 at Tom Pearce, from the long tees.

Sweet! if that is the case, then my PB at the Canyon Course is -8. I always thought it was a par 54. sorta like there are a few par 2.5's out there that make up for the 1 legit par 4. I don't see 13 as being a par 4. maybe a par 3.2 I am often in the circle in two on 13. As far as 14 goes, is that a legit par 4 for advanced and pro players? It is pretty long for me, but I assumed you guys ate that hole up with a 380' drive and a 350' approach.

Par is pretty much irrelevant anyhow, which is why I wrote my total score as 44 instead of -12, but both 13 and 18 are fours. The definition of par is one very good drive (by an experienced player) and the option for two putts. There is no one in the world that can get within 60' off the drive on 13 or 18 without something really weird happening.

Most designers do not consider this to be true anymore, it greatly depends on the hole layout and whether or not there are obstacles in front of the basket.

My opinion on hole 13, is when I play the hole well I get an easy three, when I play the hole pretty well I need to make a 25-30 footer for a 3, when I play the hole poorly I usually get a 4, even when I put my tee shot into the woods on the left. This hole is a tweener and needs to be resigned to be a hole that can be easily classified with a par rating. I would like to see the basket tucked inside the trees on the left and then we can call it a strong par 4.

Nice shooting Ryan, did you shoot that in a bag tag match!!!!

I'd say an 80' high hill and a hard dog-leg left is a fairly formidable obstacle. :)

I agree that it's a tweener, but I'd be willing to assume that for most of the MPO and MA1 division, it leans more toward a 4. I'm trying to find the scorecards from the HHOPEN so that I can find the averages.

I don't necessarily think the hole needs to be redesigned on the status that it's a tweener. If that were the case, then you'd have to redesign holes 1, 5, 7, 11, 12 because those are all really easy 2s, probably around 2.5 or so.

I'd just rather be satisfied calling is a par 4, even though it's not a difficult par four, it's a fairly easy birdie, as are the above holes, which I think we can all agree that we can't call par 2s.

Nice shooting Ryan, did you shoot that in a bag tag match!!!!

I think hole 13 should stay a par 3, a very tough par 3. I like the holes where a birdie 2 is impossible and you need to place your tee shot to have a clean shot at just getting par. Kinda like "original layout milo" hole number 1 being a par 4, it's an "impossible birdie 3", *i know 1 out of every 5,000 players get a birdie 3 on this hole*, but that what makes it a lockdown focus hole to get that par 4.
Now for hole 18, I think that should be a par 4 since an awesome drive off the pad would still be over 150-250 feet from the basket if not more plus the mando presents difficulty off the tee. And if the swamp is marked OB, then that would be a bigger challenge.
Hole 1 with the OB on the left and right make it a more intimidating birdie hole. Hole 11 has plenty of trees to knock down your drive. My opinion the course should be par 55. And my best is like -3 to -5, been a while...

Have you never seen the short left position? That one's very three-able with the right 2nd shot.

During tournaments, this basket is always in the back so I refer to tournament pin placements most of the time. Forgive me for not being more clear. The 850' hole 1, with pin placement in the far back on the right is a very tough Par 4. I want it a Par 5, but Par 4 makes you work hard.

Shot a -13 at HH #2 (Highland) course today. learned how to putt those baskets finally. did have 4 good putts scoop out of the bottom though. Wish we could score the inside of them so tey actually hold a putt. Can't fault the basic design or the designer though. Thnks Bob for creating a fun couple courses.

How do you putt those baskets?

I think the best way to putt the HH baskets is a nose down approach. coming in straight or nose up leads to more kickouts for sure.

Milo hole 1 of the 27 is NOT an impossible birdie at par 4. Several pros carded 3s last year and the year before at the Fling. Further, Hagerty and I got this in 3 playing doubles without much trouble. Well... not much trouble for me. Hagerty did most of the work. I just put the 12 foot putt in off of the two monster throws he put together. That could be a par 4 and probably should be. Not that it REALLY matters, though.

It is okay for Hole 1 to be a par 5. After all, there isn't a rule that says you shouldn't be able to get eagles occasionally.

I agree with this, too. I just don't buy the "impossible birdie" argument about that hole.

I think it should be a par 5... And yes sam, i did mention that 1 out of 5,000 players get a birdie 3 on that hole... Sure some pros get a birdie 3, but how often? Less than 25 times a year out of the 20,000 players that play that hole? I was there when they were discussing the rationale to change the hole from par 5 to par 4... It made no sense because what about hole 3 on the cliff, most of the pros birdie that in 2, should we make that a par 2? Because I know if 20,000 players played that hole, there gonna be a few aces, same odds to make an birdie 3 on hole 1... In ball golf, eagles happen quite often for the pros on the par 5 holes, it should be available to the pros in disc golf. Amateurs should have an opportunity to birdie these tough holes, just like the pros. I did make this hole in 4, but not without 4 straight beautiful shots and I know I will probably never have an opportunity to look at a 3 on that hole...

I do love hearing stories about people shooting -11, -13 or more on the Hornings short course. great scores for sure. But, is that playing Par 2's or Par 3's? According to Bob Horning, the course designer, it is a par 2 course. So, someone like Kent shooting -13, isnt truly a -13. If he shot 3's on 5 holes, and 13 2's, it wouldnt actually be a -13. It would actually be a +5.

Not trying to take away from anyones glory if they shot negative rounds on the short course, but your negative score playing par 3's isnt a neg par round if you are playing par 3's.

I would keep it at par 3... Otherwise the course record would probably be at E or -1 if someone nailed 17 2's and an ACE, which is like super hard... I would rather see -19 as the course record than a -1... But that's only one man's opinion... But then again you could make some holes par 2 and the others par 3 to make it more appropriate...

as far as ease of record keeping, I say lets keep it as a par 3 for scoring. But in reality, from the course designer, it is a Par 2 course.

Par 2 doesn't make any sense; that means you need aces to have an under-par round. If there were a way to call Horning's #2 a "par 2.5" course, that would probably work.

Why does it bother people so much to see scores of -13? That just tells you it's an easy course.

My bad. I was not aware that it was a par 2. I don't have a problem with that since I used my putter on most of the holes. So, in that case, I shot a +5. Nothing to write home about I guess.

Oh, by the way, what is a good score on that par 2?

If you gonna look at it that way, +5 is freaking awesome...

Don't let them bring you down, SMO! Par 2? What the hell is that? Minimum par is 3. Nice job on the -13!

Except that it beats my PB on that course by 1. You can bet your ass that I'll be there this weekend. :shooting:

I am going to be out there all afternoon on Saturday. I have to beat Kent's score (and break my PB tie with Scott). Bear in mind, I have only played that course like three times and once was in the dark and once was only a half round or so.
