Par 2 doesn't make any sense; that means you need aces to have an under-par round. <snip>
Why does it bother people so much to see scores of -13? That just tells you it's an easy course.
:yay::yay::yay:Well said! :yay::yay::yay:

I'm sure it is. Even mini-golf is fun. I'm just not a big fan of birdie-or-die courses.

Tee signs. Baskets. Frisbees. What's not to like? Not every course has to be Milo-esque. Mix the little one with the bigger one and it is a great day. You should try it some time... you know... BEFORE disparaging it. Benson it is not.

I don't consider it a birdie or die course, because it's likely you won't care if you birdie or not. This course is not about competition at all. It's a walk in the park with a beer and a frisbee. For many, this type of experience is a reminder of why they started playing.

The Highland course by itself is not a destination course for experienced players. But it is an awesome addtion to the Canyon course and the yet to be named ass-kicker course. I think it's a great warm-up for the other course(s) and I can't think of a better place to introduce new players to the sport.

You really should give it a try.

Hear hear. Both of these.

(The problem with it as an intro to new players is its distance from town. You gotta hope your beginners won't mind while you play at least one round on the big course!)

For the record, I don't like the short course. I played it with Tim Price and quickly got bored and lost interest in even trying to play well (this from a guy who runs a weekly at Orchard!)

However, its baskets seemed much better than on the original course... they seemed to catch way better and more consistently.

There is an additional set of chains, and they go deeper into the basket. Bob has expressed interest in modifying/adding chains to the basket on the original course at some point. :yay:

Wow I had a great weekend of golf! I've been in a bit putting slump the past couple weeks so I've been kind of down on my game. I went and worked on putts Friday evening and felt like I got into a pretty good groove.

On Sat I sot my personal best of -8 at Leverich.

Sunday morning I took a friend of mine who has only played a couple times to Orchard to let him check out the course. During that round I aced hole 6 with a Teebird. I was already pretty stoked about my weekend at this point. In the afternoon I meet Gilmore at Horning's for a couple rounds. The first round I was over par but on the second I shot 44 (-10 all par 3s).

I also got to witness part of Haley Konrad's round where she shot a -3 at Horning's which may be the womans record.

Beautiful weather and great golf make for an awesome weekend.

I shot a PB of -5 (49) at the Horning's Hideout Canyon Course today; previous PB was -3. I birdied #s 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 12, 14, 15, & 17.

Highlights were parking #2 eight feet to the right of the basket, and finally getting a drive to slide INTO the trees on #17 and then sinking the long putt for 2. (Lowlights were whacking a tree on #9 and a crappy 3rd shot on #18.)

I wonder why the basket for that hole (in the BSF layout) can't just be left there to make a new permanent hole. For that matter, the preceeding hole and the following two holes could be made permanent without adversely affecting other park uses. The only issue would be the island green hole, but that could easily be solved with an alt placement for non-tournament weekends.

My best round here at Mud, so long ago now as to be known only to a few avid historians, happened on a windy day. Seven birdies, one bogey, and one double bogey. Of course that was on the basic 18, being before the new holes where birdies aren't as rare.

Not a personal best for me, by any means, but I've gotta post this one for my daughter, Sky. She beat me for the first time on Monday. Using only one disc (my Champ Starfire), she beat me by two strokes at Vance and immediately turned to me and said "You have to post this on those message boards". I told her to suck it and to post it on her stupid Club Penguin website that she hangs out at. Haha! (Kidding, I didn't really say the suck it part) But really, at just 11 years old, I'm quite proud of her. I just thought I had a ways to go before she'd actually be able to beat me. :)

Likewise for me at Pier yesterday on hole 18. I had never driven the green on hole 18, but yesterday I stepped up with my r-pro destroyer. Threw it just to the right of the left tree screen it flexed out towards the container and came back to skip across the road/path to land just inside the base of the left tree pin high. Now if I only could've made the putt for birdie...:headbang:

Yeah I love Rocklin way better than Orangevale. It is more open but can kick you hard if you make a mistake and the baskets get moved around often making it more fun. Orangevale is a headache to drive to, find parking, compete with the back to back traffic on the course. Rocklin just feels smooth and funn

Yesterday was a day of PB's for me. My first round at Pier had me at +10 with a birdie on 7. Doesn't sound too hot except that I was +8 after 9. Best back nine ever for me. Next round I walked away with a +6 to beat my PB by 2. No birdies but considering my bogey train at 6 and 9-13 I could have had a much better round. All done with nothing but Teebirds, Buzzz's, and a Warlock. Not to mention I was on less than 6 hours sleep and still not quite sober from the night before...

The streak continued on at home where I finished pulling carpet out of the kitchen, leveled the floor and put down vinyl, hooked up the icemaker, cleaned and refilled the hot tub, pumped out and cleaned the pond then refilled and installed a new pump. Phew! I thought my wife was gonna pass out in amazement with all the work I got done. In the words of Ice Cube, today was a good day.

While his total score wasn't a PB, Hagerty did park a hole that he's never parked yesterday during a tag match at Milo. Hole 22 (hole right before the 1000 footer) is 472' from tee to pin. Jeff threw a low gut shot straight at the basket, the disc never reaching more than 15' of elevation. His drive landed about 20' directly BEHIND the pin! Yes boy's and girls, that would have made his drive around 490' worth of golf shot. And he was able to convert for the two.

P.S. I still licked him! :p

P.P.S Other round notables were:
-Chris' putting, making about 90% from 25' and in.
-My drive on hole 27. I hit the tree that is 20' in front of the pad so hard and so directly that the disc bounced all the way back and came to rest in the middle of the teepad. I took a 5 :)

After starting -5 through the first 5 holes I finished at -5 on the Hornings Canyon Course. Also shot -12 on the short course but didn't feel very happy about it considering the dumb mistakes I made that lead to pars and a bogey...

The best ever that I shot at Hornings Canyon was -3 (all par 3's) when I was injured and forced to play left handed. I played the first 3 months that the course was open Left handed. I have not been able to repeat that score with my normal RHFH. My best there is -2 playing par 3's right handed

Tied my Pier PB yesterday with a -5. It all started on 9 when my shot hit a tree root and rolled to the basket. The birdie on 14 to go to -5 was a shocker. Feels good to be headed to Whislers after a hit round.

So I took a buddy out to McIver today who doesn't get to play very often. We decided to play AM tees only on the holes that had them, due to a short amount of time to play. I had a blast playing those damn am tees! We were goofy off quiet a bit but I still strung together my best am tee round 11 birdies 4 boogies to shoot a 74 from the am, not bad but could be much better. I also think some of the am tees there make shot selection a bit harder, oddly enough!

This weekend I had the pleasure of shooting my personal best at one of my favorite courses, in a tourney!

During round one at the Fernburner (at the Lucky Mud), I managed to throw the 21 hole course at +1 - my best by two strokes! And, I also managed to hang on to third place in my division, overall!

Top it all off with my beloved placing second in her division (in only her second non-doubles tourney), and you could say we had a pretty awesome weekend!

I just got back from Lakewood DGC in Seattle and shot a personal best -1 (my previous was +2)

Those are the courses I play the most.

Well I played 2 rounds at Pier and all the pins are in the long positions except they moved 18 from the tourney position to the regular long one. I shot +3 both rounds. That is pretty good for the long positions. The short positions I am usually around +/-1p, so i am pleased with +3, although I know if i just made those couple putts, or didn't hit that stupid tree I could have done better. But that's what keeps me coming back for more is the trees and the bad putts. If I thought I did my best I might become complacent.

Shot my personal best @ Downriver the other day with a straight par. Previous to that I'd shot 2 over like 5 or 6 different times. Of course par doesn't mean much now since they removed three baskets. Never threw over par on those holes anyway but still they could've affected my game. Never know.

The round I'm most proud of however is shooting a 4 over on the Cape Fear course @ Four Mounds. Anyone who's played that course knows it gets ugly quick. Only my second time playing it too :yay:

I went out to the Fernburner last weekend and had a blast with some good friends. I was lucky enough to shoot 63 and 60 on the the 21 hole tournament layout shooting a five down on front 10 (final ten holes) to finish out the tournament. I also managed to bring the #2 Lucky Mud tag to Portland, I hope I can make it back up this summer to put it up again. The funny thing is I would have tied for first in advanced, but got second in intermediate :headbang:
I finished 2nd to Grahamer on our Friday tag match
2nd to Rahn on Saturday
2nd in Lucky mud tags
2nd in our breakdown doubles round, Team Shouldawon (Sam and I) lost to Team Guaranteed (Ol' Bob and Grahamer)
AND 2nd to Stern at Skyline on the way home :slapface:

Jamie shot a -3, 53 on the Canyon Course at Horning's Hideout yesterday - to win the 2009 Chick Flick (Advanced). If I had to venture a guess, I would say that that would be in the 940-950 realm - by far her best round ever. Will try to get scores into a spreadsheet and see how that worked out.

That's 4 tournaments in a row that she has won and she has her sights on the Umpqua Valley Championship, the Clash at the Columbia and the Eugene Celebration in the next month or so.

So I went out yesterday and shot a decent -4 on the Highlands course at Hornings, and then followed that up with a PB 61 on the Canyon with the baskets (minus 1 and 12) in the long. That also included a 25 foot birdie look back at the basket on 13. Yeah I over shot a bit deep and left of the basket on my 2nd shot.

Today I capped it off with my first disc golf victory of any sort. I reluctantly went back out to Lunchtime after dropping a +18 the last (and only) league I attended. Tonight I went out and shot, by far, a PB 39 to win league. And my +18 never even factored in my handicap.

It has definitely been a fun couple of days.

I have heard of a couple fours in casual rounds. The tourney record is -3. And Avery has a 5 or 6 but with a couple mulligans. These are scores I have heard so they could be inaccurate. the course is looking great with a bunch of areas off the fairway being cleared out. This could be the year the tourney record is broken.

Not a personal best, but possibly a sport best: Barry Schultz just threw an 1100 rated first round at the Vibram Open... has that milestone ever been reached before? I've looked through quite a lot of tourney results and never run across anything that broke into the 1100's.

I know those are unofficial results since it's an ongoing event, but I assume that on such a well-established layout the ratings are probably pretty fixed. What makes this feat even more impressive is that his round is on a course with an SSA around 62 -- not a short, easy course where a couple miracle shots can cause a huge rating swing.

Barry's round is the 5th 1100 rated round I believe. Other players who have shot 1100 are Brian Skinner, Brian Schweberger, Ken Climo, and Matt Orum. If you want to see something ridiculous check out this win by Kenny from April this year: http://www.pdga.com/tournament-results?TournID=8920&year=2009&include_ratings=1#Open

Aleksey Bubis averaged over 1000 for the tourney...Kenny beat him by 27 strokes!!!

2 on #1 in the long
2 on #2 in the short
3 on #3 in the medium
2 on #4 in the short
2 on #5 in the short (drive was just feet from OB so I made a nice 45' putt)
2 on #6 in the medium
4 on #7 in the long (60' par save off the top of the basket, made a 30' 4 putt)
2 on #8 in the long left (50' birdie putt for my dad, 40' for me, 40' par save for Toni!)
3 on #9 in the right
2 on #10 in the right
2 on #11 in the left
2 on #12 in the deep left (2'd it both times I played it today with sky roller, woohoo!)
2 on #13 in the right
3 on #14 in the long
2 on #15 in the short

Our playoff lasted 2 holes, ended on an island green hole, I was out by 3 inches, Chandler was in by a foot maybe, so it was dramatic. Chandler played great Sunday and I unfortunately had to suffer through probably the worst meltdown of my career. I was looking at some old tourney scores from a couple years ago and it is awesome how the area is getting so much better. One tourney I looked at from'05 the open winner averaged 994. This ave might not even cash these days. Good stuff, good shooting, keep it up!

Adair Record didnt last long, I went out to league tonight and lowered the record to 42 (-12). No bogies, -6 on the front 9 and -6 on the back 9. 4 course records in the last 4 days. :shooting::shooting::shooting:

The course was even very slightly harder as #4 had moved to the long placement since I shot the -11. For my -12 I had birdies on:

1 long
2 short
3 medium
4 long
5 short
9 right
10 right
11 left
13 left
15 short
16 short
17 short

I have been experimenting with the stroke saving suit in casual play, I may bring it to the celebration, don't tell the PDGA!!! :nono::trophy:

coming from someone who was playing back then, ratings have changed and its been made way easier to get higher ratings. shooting a 1000 rated round when everyone in the tournament is rated below 975 is next to impossible. You have to 5 stroke the field basically. Now that ratings have traveled and there more than 2 people in the northwest rated over 985 it makes it possible to shoot 1050 rated rounds.

For instance. Look at my first round from this tournament.
http://www.pdga.com/tournament-results?TournID=3967&year=2009&include_ratings=1#Open

I beat Feldberg by 1. 3 stroked Avery. 4 stroked the rest of the field. Round rating of 1025? Keep in mind Avery was #8-#13 and Dave was #3 if I remember right!

Try and figure out what that round would be rated today? Im going to look at it and take a guess. Im usually pretty good at calling ratings! Didnt I call your Saturday rating for low 1060's Nate?

My guess is 1060-1070.

Yeah comparing ratings is tough. It's like comparing sports teams from different eras. It's pretty much all subjective. Too bad you can't see what everyone was rated at the time of the tournament instead of there current ratings in those older statistics. A better measure would be to see what the actual round scores are like in tournaments that have the exact same or very similar layouts as they did in years past. I wonder if advancements in plastic make much of a difference in overall field scores?

How are you resolving to that rating? With a stated SSA on the course of 52.6 consistently over all three rounds. Your prediction would place the ssa at 56 or 57 with the ten points per stoke which actually would fall to maybe 8.5 points per strokes so maybe an SSA of closer to 57.6 or 58. I might agree with 10-20 rating points but surely not any where near 35-45 points. I agree it has changed but I don't think in the way that you are suggesting. I believe it has changed in the way of which rounds are collectively used and which ones are doubled weighted to allow a players rating to change quicker with better play. We could always bring Kennedy into the mix but how about we see if the SSA has Changed significantly on that course set up since 2004. It looks like this years tournament may have used a different course as the SSA looks closer to 49.8 or so. Do you know if that course was used in a similar event since the 8th Windy River Open? I would be curious to see how much the SSA has changed with the rating increases we have seen lately in play.

that course played about 4-5 stroke harder than the one we played this year. The b course we played this year had 6 of the same holes. Based on Daves rating that round was 1045. Based on Avery it was 1068. Based on Marty 1044. Based on Ross it was 1065. those were the only 4 i looked at being as they are the 4 highest rated players atm. If you compare that round to the rest of the fields rating its going to come out as 1060ish on average. Find a round rated under 1050 by anyone that beat Dave and Avery in the same round. Sometime in the last year of course and see what that rounds rated

Do you mean like round 4 of the 2009 Atlanta Open where Paul had to beat them by 8 strokes to get the 1050 rating but Paul is already 1020+ so does that count?

Or what about the late Aug 2008 Full Throttle challenge in the first round Cory Sharp takes them both down and get the 1031 rating!

But the real truth is it is hard to find a round where Dave and Avery both play lackluster enough to give up such a round!

With Paul rounds i havent looked at it. If it is a 27 hole course it becomes harder to get a higher rating. On most average 18 hole courses it comes to about 10 pts a stroke. Where a very difficult 27 layout will be as low as 5. Lots of things factor into it. That round of mine was rated low because Dave and Avery were rated 1010-1020. Then about 5 people between 960-985 and the rest of the field was under 960. Most players were 20-30 pts lower back then.

I've never posted in this thread before. Yesterday, late, I decided to try a round. Not really up for it to begin with, I decided I'd go on if I had a decent score. Parked one and two for easy birdies. Had runs on bird on three through six. Hit my first tree on seven and parked the second shot. Tree trouble on eight and ran the pin again, throwing out of the brush. Birdied nine for my best front nine ever.

Took my mandatory four on ten with a three footer. Lost my good looking drive on eleven for half an hour of the fading daylight. It had stuck in the moss on top of a stump by the fairway. Just missed the fifty footer. Parked the second on twelve. Birdied thirteen. Birdied the new fourteen. Beginning now to get mental. Banged a tree and bounced back for about a 50 foot drive on fifteen. Took an insanely tight back-door route to the pin for the easy par. Slipped to the left on sixteen and hit a tree. Just missed the chains but picked up the par. Seventeen was another short tree hit. Parked the second for the par. Easy par on eighteen. Tree on nineteen and parked the second, just like on Alt. fifteen (the extra hole I always play). Parked twenty for the birdie.

Two holes to go and the sun has set. Best drive in ages on twenty one -- missed the birdie. Longest drive since my injury three years ago on twenty two (old eighteen), but I'm stuck behind the vine maple clump and have no disc for the high annie that could save my round (Coyote is not in my bag). I try my JuJu and leave a thirty five foot downhill. Meanwhile, I have been going so mental for the past few holes that I'm about ready to jump out of my skin. I grabbed my Rattler and sailed it right past the chains and my par putt skidded out to about twenty feet past. I blow the twenty footer and get a double bogey.

My best ever was -4 on the original eighteen. That's where I was sitting, with a -5 after twenty two. Though -3 is still my best score since I ripped out my pectoral muscle, that double really crushed my elation. I stopped and sat in a chair on the new dock in the pond on the way back up the hill. A few minutes of taking in the quiet, watching a hundred dragonflies in the waning light, hearing birds chirping and fish jumping, and I was okay again.

That was a fun read, thanks, and congrats on the great round! Weird how we go mental when we are doing extraordinarily well (or badly)! That's what I did after starting out at Horning's Highlands with 4 straight tomahawk birdies and a treelove backhand birdy: jacked the drive, blew the up, and nailed the back-stand comeback!

I was the sole Oregonian amidst a sea of california locals at the USMDGC tourney in Southern California last weekend. My goal was to average over 900 rated for the tourney since it is my current ratings barrier. I averaged 922 for the event and shot my highest rated tourney score ever. I also cashed. It was a demanding three days especially with about 2 hours of sleep a night due to a weekend of celebrating my buddies 40th with a bunch of us there. anyway, next year a bunch of Oregon crusties will need to join me as it was very fun. The course layout is often compared in difficulty to Milo's Fling layout although the SSA is higher in the USMDGC layout. A bunch of the Cali dudes I met were wearing their Awesome Fling shirts from this year and they raved about how incredible that tourney was. Cool for Oregon.

I really had a moment when I ran across this book in the Goodwill in my local hometown... the title quite took me by surprise... what Shivas Irons talks and teaches is why I play golf... it's not just a game, it is my way of life... and I love that the book is about ball golf, of course, but that it translates seamlessly to disc golf... I have tried and tried to see the auras around my discs and the pins (my home course, being private and in my front yard, is not equipped with baskets... yet ;) ) but it hasn't quite happened... almost, maybe a couple times...

Grabbed a new personal best out at Steilacoom today, this time on the pro 27/18 course. I shot a -1 for the Pro 18 with 4 birdies and 3 bogeys, and no missed putts in the circle (quite possibly a first) and for the extra 9 holes that make up the 27 I shot all pars. The round itself wasn't particularly spectacular but I've been trying to break par there for a while. Now I just have to match that on the NW course.

3 cottage grove rounds: -6, -3, E (-6 is a pb for me at the grove)

-13 after 7 rounds :biggrin2:

Shot my PB this morning @ Adair:
+3 58
All pars w/ 12 in a row to start then bogies on 13, 14, and 16.
Missed an easy bird on 15 but I also saved par on 4 with a 45 footer through the trees.
Crushed my prior best by 6 strokes (Adair usually tears me up, especially 6-9).

All I was saying is that Bob set that course to be a par 2 course, yet everyone plays it as a par 3 and records their scores based on that. my best playing "par 3" is -12, which wouldnt look so good if I played it par 2's.

When did Bob specifically say that the HH Highland course was supposed to be par 2? My understanding was that it was just supposed to be a beginner-friendly course.

A course full of Par 2 holes is unrealistic, because then the ONLY way to score under par is to get aces. Why can't you just call it an easy Par 3 course, and know that a really good score is double digits negative?

talk to Bob about that one

For scoring purposes it's easiest to just call that course a red tee course, with everything on that course par 3s. If a pro were to go through that course yes, he would be expected to be a minus 12 at least, but that's not what that course was designed for, it's not a tournament course. It's designed for working on your short game, Ace races, a good beginners course, an overall fun course.

BTW the only time that there are any official par 2s is in Blue or Gold tee courses.

I think where the confusion comes in is when I first made the course I did talk to folks, saying that really, really good players should be able to hit most of the holes in 2, so don't be too hard on Troy.

I think par 2 is a complete farce, an abomination of the game. By definition, a golfer always gets 2 putts to make par, after they have reached the Green In Regulation (that's after one shot on a par 3, 2 shots on a par 4, 3 shots on a par 5). I am dumbfounded that the PDGA would entertain such a fantasy as a par 2, but they do...

I couldn't agree with you more, what's wrong with an easy par three, come on now.

Agreed on the par 2... it's a travesty, a sham, and a mockery...it's a 'travesthamockery'!! (Bud Light commercial)

I tied my pb at Lake Stevens today w/ a -7 on White tees... was -9 going into 17 and bogied what should be a birdie look for me, and then got greedy trying to hit a dangerous 50 footer on #18... it's practically an auto-roll-away if you miss a putt on that basket, but I wanted that stroke back. For what was a solid round, I left really disappointed that I let it slip away & didn't shoot -9 or better... might as well have been +7...

I guess a hole could be a par 2 if it was 30' long, green in regulation in none!

I shot a 65 on the Meadow Ridge course at Horning's Hideout on Saturday. Not a bad score considering the PRO scores from the Hoedown. Even factoring in the rain :rockon:

... not bad indeed... but the rain was beyond nasty... and it got bitter cold... and then your fingers were opening and closing with alarming slowness... and I ain't no fair weather golfer, but seriously, not even my sham wows could stand up to the slosh... so cut those por pro's a little bit more slack, I'd say...

was in san diego for the weekend and got alot of disc golf in, played Emerald Isle and Morley Field like 4 times. EI was an awesome interesting expirence which i hope to play again within a year or so. Morley is Morley, my new PB there is -4, was -5 with 3 holes to go... i dunno how good that is though, most of the placements were in the long or longer...

Matthew shot a new personal best at Orchard - a bogey free -1. His old pb was +2. If that doesn't seem too impressive, keep in mind that he is ten years old.

Oh... And Trozzle? He was playing them all as par threes. :rolleyes2:

I played at Adair today, and my putting was so bad that I didn't really keep score, but I had my personal best DRIVE ever. #5 was up on the dike/berm -- either 380' if you believe the tee sign, or 424' according to the scorecard -- and I parked my drive right below the basket on the right. I have never driven anywhere near 380' on flat ground before. Yay for the 164g Halo! :yay:

(I'm inclined to believe the tee sign and say it was 380'... but either way, it's easily my longest ever.)

Adam - that's a heck of a drive, guess all that creatine and protein whey you been taking is working ;)
So bob, what are the numbers with those pb's at HH? -5, -17, -2? ;) I can't wait to play them all again, so jealous...

I don't think my scores were all that important, except for the fact that, being my first rounds there, were my personal bests. We won't go into it too deeply. We'll keep a little mystery in the world.
