I believe that is Ken's intention. It eliminates two Pro players getting seated together when there are always more newer players than skilled players. It's really unfair, in my opinion, to have two highly skilled players seated together when there are so many players of significantly less skill at TT. Having pools will give the less skilled players a better chance of being partnered with a higher skilled player, improving the chance of cashing, and also they will have more of an opportunity to learn from the higher skilled player.
Basically, I think it's a great idea, given the assumed intention that TT is for growing the sport and giving newer players a chance to try competing in a low stress, laid back environment. Kudos to you, Ken!

I don't think it is a bad idea... just different than years' past and was curious if it would be this way going forward. I like it, actually. I can't wait to get paired up with a player of higher skill when I get out there. :)
Seriously, though... do you know how he decides who is A and who is B?

Seemed to work well last night. New Bounty this year Sponsored by Stumptown. For any female player that shoots 17 down with a partner or 12 down cali gets $100 paid by Stumptown for any upcoming Tournament.
Another new sponsor this year is Next Adventure. Ken still doesn't have details of what kind of Bounty they will sponsor but they will also be sending out CTP's each week. Woohoooooooooooooo!

That is mostly true, but for those right on the edge, you may get shifted either up or down to even the pools. Happened last night when Pat Darr (rated 895) got bumped up to A Pool and was lucky enough to get me (B pool) as a partner :)

We had 46 players last night, which is indeed a record for the first week of Tuesday Twos (Last year we had 23)!
We had 3 CTP prizes donated by Jeff Larson, Jason McGrew and Justin Mann.
The A/B Pool approach was pretty much summed up by Ryan and Bob, but here is a little more color:
We started by roughly grouping A players (900+) and B players (< 900). It turned out we had roughly 16 A players and 30 B players. So, we then balanced the field by moving the top 8 B players to the A pool. After balancing, perhaps the division looks more like 850+ and < 850?
The other half of the story is that given an odd number of players, the person playing 'cali' will never come from the B pool. I think this is fair in that B players will probably never want to be forced to play cali and some/most A players would enjoy getting to play cali. For the record, the four highest scores posted last year (+32, +9, +4, +3) were all posted by a B pool player playing cali.
I am very interested in hearing general opinions about the whole pooling idea. My only concern with it involves the balancing of pools. I don't want to create a situation where the top of the A pool usually wins, the brunt of the B pool does when paired with top A poolers, and the tweeners (~850ish) rarely cash because they are always paired with B poolers and can't usually carry the team by themselves.
I'd love feedback!

Another question I posed to the group last night:
Should we continue the practice of having a CTP playoff to break ties of all cashing positions, or only to break ties for 1st place instead?
Scenario:
Team A: -16
Team B: -16
Team C: -15
Team D: -15
Team E: -14
Option 1: Playoff All Cashing Positions
1. Team A (wins CTP playoff) $1000
2. Team B $700
3. Team C (wins CTP playoff) $500
4. Team D $300
5. Team E $150
Option 2: Only Playoff 1st Place
1. Team A (wins CTP playoff) $1000
2. Team B $700
3. Team C $400
3. Team D $400
5. Team E $150
Hey, as long as we are playing supposition theater, might as well dream big! :wink2:
If we only playoff for 1st, things will go quicker at the end. Also, nobody shoots a good round only to leave empty handed only because of a single CTP throw on hole 1.
Once again, feedback is very appreciated!

The splitting of the A pool and the B pool seems like a pretty good idea - I like the opportunity to learn from the people I throw with on my card (and last night was perfect for that). However, I do also really like the randomness of disregarding the pools. For a one-time doubles event, the pools make the most sense. For a league, I think the complete random draw works just fine. Just my $.02. Whatever the choice, this is still one of the best run leagues in the NW!
Also, regarding the playoff... May as well just throw for first. That should keep us from having to have multiple groups throwing in the dark like we did at the end of last season.

Ken,
I really like the idea of the A/B grouping. I like Option 2 for the playoff scenario, but have a question. If there are no playoffs for ties after 1st, do they get the same # of points? I would assume so, but this is different from years past.
It's killing me that I can't make it for a few weeks. I committed to a bowling league with my wife. Only 3 more weeks left, then I will be a regular at TT! Hope to bring several recruits with me as well to get the attendance up even higher!!

I personally love seeing the throw offs at the end. In "supposition theater" if Team D, E, F, and G don't throw off and each team splits $400 and walks away with $100 not a big deal. But in REAL life if Team D, E, F, and G tie and split $4, each team getting a dollar, each player getting .50 :chinscratch:hmmmmm, I think a throw off and the winners splitting the $4 sounds much better. :yay:

I was thinking about this last night and I think the low end A pool players are going to get screwed in the long run. The people with the biggest advantage are the top end B poolers.
I wonder if you can set something up where tweeners get placed in a pool based on their current standings or how they placed in the last event.
I also see the possibility of the top 12 not accurately reflecting peoples' level of play. With the advantage top B poolers have you may see them making up the majority of the top 12.
Thanks for trying to improve an already great league Ken. I do like the idea of the pools and had a great time last night.

I disagree. The top B poolers are likely to get bumped into the a-pool (assuming that, most weeks, there will be more B players than A players). Then you'll have a B/B team playing a bunch of A/B teams.
I love the A/B concept, but it seems that it will only work well if there is an equal number of both. I see lots of room for whining and crying, but of course people did that when it was random.

I love the A/B concept, but it seems that it will only work well if there is an equal number of both. I see lots of room for whining and crying, but of course people did that when it was random.
By "top B poolers" I mean people who actually play in the B pool. By B pool I'm not referring to a player with a <900 rating. People that are sub 900 rated players that get bumped into the A pool are A poolers.

I am trying out the discgolfscene.com website for posting Tuesday Twos results. This will be secondary to the existing TT website.
You can check it out here (http://www.discgolfscene.com/leagues/2009_Tuesday_Twos).
If you are on discgolfscene already, I can link your TT results to your player profile. It will automatically add the scores to your profile and display achievements from league finishes. I just need your profile email address you use to log in to discgolfscene.
The double entry is a pain in the a$$, however, so I will likely enlist the help of others to transfer players and scores to the discgolfscene site from the TT site.
BTW, the TT site should be updated very soon now.

Ken,
As a fellow numbers geek, I appreciate your attempt to even out the field but in this case i think random is the way to go, as long as it is truly random. Splitting the fields is fine but if you were trying to even it out you would need to place the Number 1 A pool person with the last place B pooler and continue until you get to the bottom A pooler paired with the top B pooler. This is the only way to accommodate player abilities accurately.
My reasons for random are:
1. Its easier to set up and pair up meaning less work for the TD.
2. Setting up two different pools and randomly matching will cause problems for boarder line players who some weeks will be in the A pool and some weeks the B pool.
3. People did not earn their ratings at Orchard so those ratings will not accurately determine their ability to play at Orchard.
4. Weather will be a big factor for the B poolers and a slight hinderance to the A poolers.
5. Player ability for pool settings is a guess at best, someone could be killing orchard but does not play in events and has no rating!

Or 'A' poolers use just one disc.
How about A-poolers putt with their off hand?
- I too like the intention of the A/B pools but I think it could slow the start each week (as it is determined who is good enough to move to the A-pool).
- Also I bet that the bottom A-poolers will suffer as they will never get paired up with a top 12 player.
- With only the top 10 of the 19 weeks counting is the A/B pool necessary?
Either way I'll support TT and show up when I am able. I'll be trying to dig up some more obscure CTPs for this year (yet to secure any urns.. someone asked me last night if I planned to bring a casket... I doubt that will happen, but you never know).

Thanks to Scott Hill for bringing me a disc that he found at Next Adventure that belonged to a fellow 'Nation member (which was not sold to Next Adventure by said 'Nation member). It was much appreciated.
Also, it was nice to not have to beat up Bob Cabal, since it didn't actually rain until the end of the awards. Bishop and I versus OTH Bob in a Pier 6 brawl? Would have been brutal.

I made a small change to the Tuesday Twos website in that you can now select results, standings, aces, ctps, etc from past years (2007-2009).
Just select what you want to view (e.g. standings) and then select the appropriate year from the year dropdown box near the top right of the page.
It defaults to the current year unless you change it.

There are some weeklies that I would not take a new player to, but Tuesday Twos is NOT one of them. It is a unique atmosphere that makes both beginners and experienced players feel comfortable. My ten year old son hopes to play this summer, as soon as spring basketball season finishes.

Week 4 was pretty interesting.
1) We had 54 people and were forced to close registration due to a maxed out field! (This is the 1st time we've had to do this, although we've been close before)
2) Mat Crider got another ace (hole 5, $102). So far, he's the only one who has aced this year and he's done it twice now and has taken all the acepot $$$! (I'm sure Haley doesn't mind, though.)
3) Johnny Lamont and David Dickerson were the first team to win a bounty this year, by winning the Next Adventure Secret Score Bounty with a score of -4.
4) I was just checking and since 2007, 269 different players have played at least one Tuesday Twos round. Well over half have played multiple events.
5) Sean Fry has played the most rounds since 2007: 40.

Thanks, guys. That was quite a round last night. Barsby has one of the most impressive sidearm throws I have ever witnessed! It was a pretty good feeling to know that I actually contributed, instead of just being carried the entire way - probably one of the better rounds I have thrown in quite a long time (speaking just of my own performance). It was nice to have my putting game show up at just the right time.
That kid sure can throw - and was amazingly cool to hang out with for 18 holes. He seems really down to earth, and had some great stories from being out on the tour.
The only frustrating thing was screwing up the payout at the end of the tourney. Dustin and I did our best trying to get everything right without messing it up. I guess the good thing is, we erred by paying out one extra spot.

When I arrived, you were on hole 3. This is what I witnessed:
Hole 3: They play Barsby's drive (near ace), Mitch hits the ~15 putt.
Hole 4: They play Mitch's disc, Greg hit's the ~10' putt
Hole 5: I don't recall. Mitch's drive/Greg's putt?
Hole 6: Greg goes OB long (crazy skip). Mitch nails the 40 footer to seal the perfect round.
Yeah, from what I saw you played pretty damn good.

Hole 6: Greg goes OB long (crazy skip). Mitch nails the 40 footer to seal the perfect round. If you were OB, how would you have a perfect round (perfect = 18 birdies)? Did you play from Mitch's spot?

Well Barsby did show up and yes the 3-peat did take place :trophy:.
It was a little closer then I expected. Their winning score was -11 with four other groups at -10.
Scott Searles was Barsby's partner...Scott carried the 2nd leader board on Sunday (at the BSF) and watched Barsby play the whole round. I think it was awesome he was matched up and played with him last night.

So, a few things....
1) How is it that "NW Fantasy DG League" has its own category, and yet "Leagues" (such as this one) don't have their own category? Just curious.
2) Ken, are you feeling better? (I know that this will most likely be read as, Ken, are Dustin and I gonna have to figure out how to run this again? But hey, what can I do?)
3) I will have Lucky Mud bag tags in my possession. I will be selling them for $10 each. If you have questions, just ask me.
Thanks. Can't wait to see everyone again.

3 aces by two players. One caught on film. Larson had 2 and Roller had one.

Doubt that would happen, but if you want to play you might have to camp out Monday night for a spot in line. Twos is the hot ticket in town.

It will kind of suck if I finally get out there next week and I can't get in. How early do you have to be there to get in? Did the guys who were turned away show up late, or did it fill early?

It was a combo of both. If you want to get in be there at 5:30 when they start collecting money. No more of the 'play a round and wander in to sign up". I believe there were people on the course that did not get in. It did fill pretty quickly tho.

the line forms in front of Gilmore even before he gets set up. I would say anything past 5:30 and you are not likely to get a spot. You could always phone a friend if you are running late. I had 2 other guys money last night. I do charge a fee for signing people up. JK

Because of the high probability of having to turn players away, from now on I will no longer be accepting payments for other players. Everyone will have to stand in line themselves to register and pay to play.
This is the only fair way of handling the situation as I have already told others that they cannot pay me in advance if they have a hard time getting to the park at 5:30.
(This all reminds me of Lunchtime League 2 or 3 years ago when we had the big acepots...)

They can, indirectly. Especially when you try to manually update a row to fix a mistake and then don't write the where clause correctly and update 45 rows instead of 1. I'm blaming it on the swine flu, though.
Good thing I could repair the database easily using the data available on the website.

Was nice to see the turnout last night. The casual groups definitely got in the way though. I asked Ken about what it costs to reserve the park. $50 is the cost. If we can begin gathering people to contribute maybe we can have smoother rounds without the fear of getting thrown on which I did see happen last night.

Maybe we could do work parties in exchange for the Tuesday rentals, after all majority of players from TT's help put the tee pads in!

I'd be for this in favor of chipping in the cash.
Also, a little sandwhich board by hole one that announces "League Night" might do wonders. You don't have to say the park is closed - let people assume.

The only problem with the work party in exchange for money idea is that REI works on this park for free. I just don't see HPD taking you guys up on this offer, sadly. Not saying that they wouldn't but I think it would take more than just a phone call and a short conversation.
If the event is so popular, raise the entry fee by $1 per player per week. You get 50 players, you have just paid for next week's park closure.
My 2 cents, anyway. Sure do hope to make it out to one of these eventually. Maybe the last week. :whistler:
Jet
June 18th, 2009, 09:53 AM
We talked about this a little on Tuesday night but if the entry free was raised by $1 and 50 or more players showed up, that would cover the $50 park fee. If more than 50 players showed, then the money could be kept for future weeks in case fewer than 50 showed up. Paying an extra $1 per person isn't so bad esp when it means we have less time standing around and more time playing and finishing sooner.

June 18th, 2009, 10:42 AM
I didn't mind the extra groups enough to pay extra money. I think there should just be a sign saying "Tuesday Twos League, Random Draw Doubles, Only $5, Sign Up At 5:30 If You Want To Play". By doing that, it doesn't say the course is CLOSED but gets the message to them that if they want to play they must be there for the league.
Sam
June 18th, 2009, 11:06 AM
No. Won't work Brody. Most players will be like, "Oh, League... nah. Let's just play casual." And then you can do nothing to stop them from playing. And it WILL get worse before it gets better, I assure you.
I am sure you can scrounge up an extra buck to INSURE it is closed.
Jason Philips
June 18th, 2009, 04:24 PM
Sam, you hit it perfectly. There will be casual groups sign or not.
The only realistic way to keep most people from clogging the course any worse than it already is would be to pay the fee and put up a course closed sign with a reason why.
If raising the entry by $1 chases people away then maybe it would be a natural filter for the quantity of players that come out each week. There are plenty of people willing to pay a little more for the convenience of not getting thrown on.
As much as it warrants it's own discussion it is very surprising to me how cheap many disc golfers can be. Maybe it is a NW thing as I have seen it in the club scene too.

One strategy that'll keep casual groups from coming on tuesday is to not let them play through during the rounds. Then they will see how slow it is if they want to play on tuesday. As long as someone tells them that TUESDAY is league night, they'll remember that and will probably not come to play a casual round during the league or will join the league.

I didn't say that they didn't! I'm not saying 'kick them off' or anything. I'm just saying 'make them wait at each hole as long as we do so in the future they decide not to come during league'... there's a big difference!
Also, closing the park is hypocritical if you're saying that they should be allowed to play at the same time

Sorry, I mis-read ya. Are groups letting casuals play through? I know my group never does. :whistler:
I don't see my statement about closing the park as being hypocritcal, because everyone has the right to do that. Mr. Casual Player has the right to pay $50.00 to have the park to himself, just like we have the right to pay $50.00 to limit the park to TT players.
